Long standing miss from me, really useful when switching from an app to the other (Ps/Ai/inD)
Shortcuts for
D : Default color (black/White),
Shift-X : switch the colors
And may be 2 of the 3 most basic ones :
, ; : (on the bottom right of a french keyboard) which set :
, (comma) : picks the fill color (flat)
: (colon) : picks the transparent color
; (semicolon) : picks a gradient (in Muse, may be switches from flat to gradient’s last settings ?)
the ability to pick a color would require another default :
X : switches the focus to fill/stroke color so we can remove (transparent) a stroke color, turn it into a flat fill, etc.

Comparing Indesign/Illustrator/Photoshop to other programmes

Hi all,
My place of work has asked me to look into the possibility of moving away from Adobe to other lower cost or free design options.
We are still languishing behind on Creative Suite 5.5 so can either go to CC (yes please), or go the other way using alternatives that are cheaper or free.
I've have been asked to look at Functionality (obvious feature comparison), Compatibility (I believe this means opening old files, working with external organisations such as printers etc), Inter-operability I imagine they mean between indesign, illustrator, photoshop and then the other packages).
So, my question is, are there any resources online you chaps can recommend that compares features and/or has covered similar topics?

Can I replace Pantone color books in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop?

These new Pantone + books are a pain in ...well... you understand. In my years as a designer, I have just clicked on the correct book and color swatch, but now...
I am using Windows 7 and the CS6 suite of products. We have a company logo in which both main colors have dramatically changed with the new books. I won't go into all of the tricks we've tried to be able to place it in new documents without the color changing. I now think the only answer is to replace the color books as Adobe recommends. I do have two questions, though.
First, can I change the books in all of my products? Adobe only gives instructions for Illustrator and InDesign, but I regularly have to change vendor logos into our company colors in photoshop, and I am finding the color in Photoshop isn't the same when I bring that logo into Illustrator, even though they have the same number.
Second, what are the end results if I do change the books when I send a document to a printer? We usually do our printing in-house, so I am wondering when we buy PMS 2955 if it will be what I see in the old books or the new books. And what will an out-of-house printer be using?
My main two concerns are (1) seeing the correct color on screen and (2) printing the correct color. I don't really care how I get there, but I'd like it to be a permanent fix so I don't have to go in and manipulate swatches every time I add a logo to an item.

Which Mac Pro to purchase - 4 or 6 core for Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop CC

Hey There, I am new to this forum and wanted to ask a question on the current Mac Pro's.
I am thinking of purchasing a new Mac Pro but i honestly can't work out if it's worth going for the 4 or 6 core version. I don't think Illustrator CC takes advantage of multicore but i think possibly Indesign CC and definitely photoshop CC does. I could be completely wrong though things may have changed.
I am a graphic designer and mostly work in print. I create posters, brochures and occasionally large format event work. Recently I have been working with files around the 500mb - 1GB mark, in photoshop, indesign and Illustrator, thats about as big as they ever get size wise.
I am not rendering things or doing anything too crazy, mostly throwing around 100mb+ files with all of these 3 apps open with multiple layers all at once, possibly office apps too in the background word, powerpoint etc.
I have heard conflicting opinions on this and I hope to come to some kind of conclusion. This question has been asked before in the past but without much of a definitive resolution. Whenever I have seen an Adobe mod join the conversation its usually a copy and pasted minimum spec link or something like that. Not a clear jump off the fence, 'I would advise this configuration, it's best for your workflow' comment.
I realise more ram would be good.. larger SSD etc... but its more the actual base machine I am interested in some help picking, are the extra cores worth it? the bells and whistles can be added later and i have a good idea what to chose there.

Thanks so much for the advice I realise they would both be perfectly fine for what I need to do, but my main issue is working out how much I would gain by going with the 6 core. Would it be worth the extra cost to push it to the 6 core version and would I see the difference to such an extent that the cost is worth it. Not being 100% sure how these apps and the OS in general take advantage of 4 compared to 6 core and the levels of benefit involved. If the gain is relatively small then I should just go for the 4 core, but if there are actual real world speed differences and enough future proof reasons to go for the 6 I would do. Basically would I notice it if i went for the 6 core. I spoke to an authorised Apple reseller recently who advised the 6 core but was unable to explain why it was better than the 4 and by how much.

Is there a way to open the last file I used in InDesign/Illustrator/Photoshop when I open the app

I want to create a shortcut (Win7) that will automatically open the last file I used in the above apps when I open the app. Is there a command line switch like /r or /l that does that?

Thanks, your point is well taken... It would be nice, though, to have the ability to sort a "Last Used" column in iTunes and select a bunch of apps to remove in one shot.

PC restarts when using adobe cs3 (indesign, illustrator, photoshop)

My pc restarts specially when using indesign. Sometimes every after 1 hour, sometimes just a couple of minutes.
I have no idea why is this happening. When I'm playing games, the pc is just fine even when im playing for a couple of hours, which i think is more stressful for the pc compare to just using indesign.

Same color looks diffrenent in Illustrator and Photoshop?

I need to convert a logo that I've made in Photoshop to an EPS-file using Illustrator. I've imported all the paths and filled them with the colors that I had in Photoshop. The colors I'm using in the logo is black, white and green. The black and the white looks fine but the green is not the same at all, even though I've used the exact same RBG-values. I've also selected RGB-mode in Illustrator and changed to the same RGB-profile.
Shouldn't the colors be the same when you use the same values? I've also tried this with CMYK but I still get the same problem.
I'm using Photoshop CS2 and Illustrator CS5.

Same colors display differently between Illustrator and Photoshop

Hi there,
I would love to know why the same colors display differently between my Photoshop and Illustrator apps (CS3). For example, a logo will display much darker or more vividly in Illustrator than in Photoshop, same file, same colour values. My color settings are synchronized from Adobe Bridge to North American Pre Press 2. I've opened the logo file in RGB color mode, in both apps. It would be so helpful if both apps displayed the colours consistently.
Any suggestions on how to do this would be wonderful!

Hello Bobbie,
I am using CS3 too and let me tell you that this Illustrator version is the worst ever. You best bet is to take the "Eye Drop" tool and select the Photoshop element to match the color.
CS4 also have problems when handle placed items. Sadly I can tell you that CS2 is more reliable than CS3 and CS4.
Not even if you use Pantone colors will match, Illustrator will change the colors making it impossible to match. "Adobe Quality"

Merge InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop together?

Wouldn’t it be great to have everything you need in one app?
Actually, there are currently some applications like this.
Take a look at DAWs. They deal with recorded audio (similar to bitmap) and MIDI (like vector) at the same time.
And if you are looking for a visual stuff you can check SideFX Houdini. They have several contexts for dealing with the data: 3d models (sops), various input data (chops), compositing context (you can do image color correction, layering etc.), shader context, programming, rendering contexts etc. And you can have each of them any place you want. This + the fully procedural approach makes Houdini one of its kind application that gives you endless possibilities to build complex effects, models and animations. You can even build your own tools, like city generating assets (as seen in Inception or 2012 movies). You can even write music and manipulate robots in this app (if you want to).
So it is totally possible to fuse those apps together. Certainly it is a huge amount of work. But think of it: you now have to install Phantasm to apply Curves or Hue/Saturation in Illustrator, you have inner shadow in InDesign and Photoshop but not in Illustrator, you have good Paragraph and Character styles in InDesign but half-assed in PS and Illustrator, also grids, object styles, link management and so on. Wouldn’t it be great to have everything at once? Like in Houdini? You choose image and you can do what can be done with raster, you choose text and context changes to show what can be done with text. I’ve been dreaming about it for years.

On Mac OS X and Windows, it's possible to easily switch from one OPEN/ACTIVE/RUNNING application to another, with a simple keystroke shortcut.
So, in a sense, the tools are in one's toolbelt, ready for use, now. Or, from another view, the tools are in the equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife (SAK,) but not quite. Actually, it's usually awkward to switch from one SAK tool to another - depending on where they're located on the SAK body, some combinations of tools can be open at the same time. For example, the corkscrew, awl, or Phillips screwdriver can be open on the back, while a file, scissor, or eating utensil can be open on one or the other end of the front. The user can orient the SAK one way or another to use an open tool. A few tools can be removed, like the tweezer and toothpick, so there's a tad more flexibility.
The multiple Creative Suite applications can be open at the same time. However, if the computer lacks sufficient resources, there's an awkward delay in switching from one application to another, while resources scramble to meet the users' requests.
Perhaps the understood but unstated wish is that the tools were more-efficiently integrated, so that switching from one set of functions to another within an integrated application, would demand less from the resources, compared to the current model of switching from one standalone application to another.
It's a fascinating wish. However, wish with care. Some SAKs used to have lifetime warranties. "If it breaks, we'll replace it." The problem is that when the broken item is returned, the user is without all the tools during the replacement. In the integrated-application model, the analog is when a bug hits, fixing it will require testing the complement of integrated applications to verify that the fix didn't break something somewhere else. Hence, users may be stuck with the buggy version longer, before a fix can be developed, tested, and certified.
As hardware continues becoming ever-more powerful, eventually, pauses due to switching among independent applications will be less and less annoying.

Colors look different in browser window than in InDesign or Photoshop

So, the colors look quite different (brighter) on Kuler (in
my Firefox browser window), than when I download or copy the CMYK
numbers exactly over to InDesign or Photoshop. In Kuler, the colors
are significantly brighter and more saturated than how they appear
in my design software.
My coworker theorizes that InDesign & Photoshop are
'compensating' for how the color will actually look when printed.
Thoughts? Is there a setting I need to change on either
Firefox or my Adobe software so the colors match up?

I have a similar problem - colours look brigher in Firefox,
IE and Photoshop, darker in Illustrator and Dreamweaver. I've tried
resetting the color settings in Bridge, but still get the same
difference between Photoshop, and Illustrator and Dreamweaver. I
can't understand this at all. I don't know if it has something to
do with the fact that I have a color profile called "Natural Color
Pro" installed on my computer (came with the monitor) which
Photoshop reminds me is faulty every time I open it - I tell it to
ignore the profile. I don't seem to be able to uninstall it for
some reason.

InDesign JPG Compression vs Illustrator/Photoshop

I am working on a website and need to put in a lot of images. For most images, I use photoshop. I create the correct size then export using "Save As for Web & Devices." This works great, but I need to display several small images in a grid format. What works best for me right now is to layout the images in InDesign and then export the layout as a .jpg. I realize I could use CSS to create a grid of the individual images and I also realize I could layout the document in Photoshop, however, for now I want to use InDesign.
Doing this got me thinking about the compression qualities of the different programs within CS (I am using CS4). From what I understand each program is built a bit differently. For example, the text engine in InDesign is different than the text engine in Illustrator (making working with text between the two programs seamlessly a total *****). I believe differences in the programs is the same for compression engines used to create formats like jpg? I've heard people note differences between Photoshop's Save As for Web & Devices and Ilustrator's Save As for Web & Devices so maybe that is the case? (I personally cannot tell the difference). I want to know what's underneath the hood of these programs and am having trouble finding this information.
So in short, what program does the best job optimizing images (jpg or png) for the web?
My guess is Photoshop, but this is a guess. If correct, why not InDesign or Illustrator? What compression engines do Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop use? Are there strengths and weaknesses? Why doesn't all the programs use the same compression engines?
I realize, in the end, if it looks good it works. But curiousity is killing me and I want a deeper answer.

I don't doubt for one second that this is indeed your experience and that you have settled into what I can best describe as a very degenerate workflow in order to get your job done under the conditions you describe.
Having said that, I must say that your experience and the fact that you believe that this is the best workflow you can achieve given the conditions is an exceptionally sad commentary on the state of the graphic arts industry in general and the printing industry in particular. The workflow you describe is a “lowest common denominator” workflow that almost guarantees that in most cases in which you have anything other than pure raster imagery to print, you will get results that are not optimal.
You should be able to use PDF/X-4 files as the means of passing artwork from your clients to you and then subsequently from you to your printers. Source files (i.e., native Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop files as well as assets such as imagery and fonts) should not be the currency of the realm here.
When I need to go “outside” to print (for anything my fleet of laser printers and wide format printers can't handle including offset printing jobs), I typically go and interview the print service provider and provide a sample job to print using a PDF/X-4 job with live transparency and color managment. If they cannot handle it in their normal workflow or cannot adjust to the twenty first century very rapidly, I move on to another print service provider. For better or worse, there are plenty of very hungry printers out there and at least some of them realize that unless they learn to deal with modern workflows, they will be history like the many thousands of other such printers that have gone belly-up over the last half dozen years!

Can Adobe Illustrator match inner bevel effects of inDesign and Photoshop?

Can Adobe Illustrator match or simulate inner bevel effects of inDesign and Photoshop? If it is possible, please explain how to get a soft inner bevel on type or vector shape in Adobe Illustrator CS4 that can be set up to be identical (or, at least, very close) to the layer styles of PS and the type/fill/stroke/object effects of ID. So far, I have not been able to achieve the same look with 3D extrude and bevel in AI. I want a solid red object with a soft 16 point white-tint highlight and a soft 16 point black tint shadow. If it is not something that is possible with 3D extrude and bevel settings, this something that must or could be done manually with the gradient mesh tool?

I’ve vectorized everything except the 3D red portion.

When I try to update I get an U44M1I210 error message, "Unable to extract the downloaded files" - help please, applies to latest Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop CC

When I try to do a CC update I get an U44M1I210 error message, "Update failed - Unable to extract the downloaded files. Press retry to download again. (U44M1I210)" - help please - re-downloading makes no difference, applies to latest Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop CC, others seemed to update without problems. I can see the disk image files in AAMUpdater folder but they will not open and come up with "couldn't be opened - resource busy" message.

Yes Jeff, I did all those several times to no avail.
I've included a small error snippet from two installs here. In Creative Cloud when updating the Apps, all 3 get to 50%, then the failure occurs. Retrying starts at 50% and fails the same way each time.
This first one is a segment from the Indesign updater - I have always had the all hard drive folders with read and write privileges allowed and I checked again, this is still the case so I do not know why this particular error message is arising. The second snippet if from the Illustrator update.

If you didn't have the opportunity to deactivate the installations then you should contact Adobe Support thru chat and ask them to reset your activations for all the serial numbers involved.

Make sure you are logged in to the Adobe site, have cookies enabled, clear your cookie cache. If it continues to fail try using a different browser.
