Same Computer, New Ipod, will they Sync Correctly?

I currently have an Ipod that's Synced with my computer. I plan on getting a new Ipod that I want to sync with that same computer, and no longer use my old Ipod. Will my Itunes be able to sync the new Ipod or will I have to reinstall anything? Thanks!!

It will sync just fine and you'll not need to do anything different.
Plug it in sync away!

  • New iPod will not sync song ratings with iTunes

A few months ago I bought an iPhone (my first Apple MP3 player) and loaded it up with some music and everything worked fine between it and iTunes. I would rate some songs on the iPhone and synced it up with iTunes and it transferred those song ratings over with no problems.
I later got rid of the iPhone and bought an iPod 4GB Nano and loaded it up with music but when I rated some songs and synced it up with iTunes it would not transfer the ratings over. It would transfer over the ratings fine from iTunes to the iPod but not the other way around. I removed and reinstalled iTunes and deleted the iTunes folder within the My Music folder on my computer and reloaded iTunes and imported all my music again. Restored and reset my iPod and tried again, it still will not transfer over the song ratings from iPod to iTunes.
So I figured I got a screwed up iPod (it was a refurb) and decided to go ahead and upgrade. Bought a brand new iPod 8GB Nano and the same thing is happening again. Although it's not absolutely critical to be able to rate songs it helps in getting my music library sorted in deciding what to keep or not.
Any idea what to do short of reinstalling Vista or moving my music library over to another computer to sync with?

Hi, I just sorted out this problem for my ipod touch. Jose9550 and Chris in CA did not explain very well how it is to be sorted - their posts helped me but iI sort of discovered it by accident. My main problem was that the ipod did not update itunes with my track ratings made direct with the touch screen whilst listening to tracks.
Here is how I found out how to sort it:
Step 1: Click on the option in the summary screen to manually manage the music on you Ipod. Back up any tracks/playlists that you don't want to lose.
Step 2: Create a few playlists with music that you want on Ipod
Step 3: Click on your Ipod name in Itunes side bar and then select the Music tab on the main panel on the right. Now click on the check box "Sync Music". This will bring up a prompt that all your music /playlists currently on the Ipod may be erased. Accept this message and then click on check box "Selected playlists". Now pick the playlists/playfolders you want synced. Click apply.
Step 4: Go into the menu bar in itunes and select Edit>Preferences>Devices> and uncheck box beside "Disable Automatic syncing for IPhones and IPods"
Now any changes made to the playlists/tracks etc on the desktop or IPod will be transferred in both directions.

Make sure your new computer is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.

As mentioned by vazandrew, music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • I have moved my itunes to a  new computer and now my ipod will lnot sync with new line up

i have moved mu itunes to a new computer and my ipod will not sync with new music.

If you are using automatic syncing, you may need to set up the iPod's Music tab in iTunes.
Select the iPod in iTunes.  There is a row of "tabs" (starting with Summary).  Select Music there.  This is the Music tab, where you tell iTunes how to sync the iPod with songs.  Sync Music is checkmarked for automatic syncing.
If your entire iTunes music library can fit on the nano, you can choose to sync Entire music library.  Otherwise, you can choose to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Then, create your selection of songs below.  For example, if you want to keep it simple, create a new playlist in iTunes.  Put ALL songs you want on the iPod on that playlist, including songs from the newly added music.  Back on the Music tab, find and checkmark that new playlist under Playlists.
When you click Apply, your selection of songs on the Music tab syncs to the iPod, replacing its current content.  Going forward, any changes that are related to the Music tab settings sync automatically when you connect the iPod, or when you click Sync.  So, if there is a playlist with your "iPod songs," you can just update that playlist (add and remove songs) whenever you want; iTunes updates the iPod with the same changes at the next opportunity.

  • My computer died rather rapidly so i had no chance to do a backup or anything. now i want to put itunes on my new computer but it will not sync with my ipod. i got my purchased music but not the playlists and it does not sync when i plug it in.

my computer hard drive died rather suddenly so i had no chance to do a back up or any thing. i put itunes on my new computer and got my purchased music but my ipod will not sync and i cannot get my playlists onto the computer. is there any way to get my playlists on my new computer and also get my ipod to sync. it is a waste of time to purchase new music and i do not want to purchase a new ipod since i have so much memory left on this one.

Thank you all for your replies. Here is what i ended up doing. I cannot afford any 3rd party software so i went to itunes and manually entered all my playlists. As I had indicated my purchased music was on my new computer just not the playlists  and I could not sync my ipod. After I rebuilt all my playlists I tried to restore my ipod to factory defaults/new. All of the steps called for in apple support and elsewhere were not available to me. I connected my ipod, went to my computer, right clicked my ipod, and formatted. That wiped my ipod so when I connected to itunes it then gave me a restore option. I did the restore and all is good in the empire again. I can now buy new music and sync my ipod so I am a happy camper.
    Thanks to all.

I got a new computer and my IPOD will not sync with the new computer.....I have a ITUNES account on the new computer and is downloading music just fine but it will not sync to the IPOD....What should I do to sync my IPOD?  thanks

Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.
Attempts to sync an iDevice to a new computer will remove all content from the device and replace it with content from the new, empty library.

  • Lost iPod--when I buy a new one, will it sync to my computer okay?

So I recently lost my iPod. When I get a new one and plug it into the computer, will the new iPod automatically sync and transfer my entire iTunes library? I'm worried it might try to erase my library because the new iPod will obviously be blank. Thanks!

Yes, it will. Back up the existing library anyway.

You'll need to connect the iPod Touch to your iTunes library in recovery mode and restore it factory settings.  There is no other way.

I created a new library so I can use it for just my music, but now my ipod will only sync to my old library and not the new one I created, even though I'm in the new library when I open itunes.  Any solutions?

The point is that there are four i product users for one computer in my house, and not everyone wants the same music on their device.  Like I said before, the ipod is not syncing to the new library even though I plug it in when the new itunes library is pulled up.  It keeps syncing to the old library...
