Same error message no matter what I do!

I get the error message, "The software required for communicating with iPods and mobile phones was not installed correctly. Do you want iTunes to try to repair this for you?" every time I open iTunes. Regardless of whether I say yes or no in the dialog box, nothing else comes up and iTunes starts up. Everything works fine in the program (playing music, downloads, the Genius bar, etc.), but it doesn't recognize my iPod Touch for some reason. I've uninstalled iTunes, restarted my computer, and reinstalled iTunes several times now, only to get the same thing. I was also looking around on this forum and saw a similar problem that was solved by editing the registry. No luck there, either. My Touch is stuck on the screen telling me to connect it to iTunes, I can't even do a hard reset on it. The iPod drivers install when I hook it up to my computer, but it doesn't show up as a drive, and nothing comes up in iTunes. I've been told about a hundred times that I need to update my version of iTunes so it'll be compatible with the Touch, but I have the latest version. If anyone knows how to fix this, or even has some ideas, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks for reading and trying to help!

I have exactly the same problem with my iPhone 3G. I followed all instructions available, including downloading Windows Install Cleanup. No success.

    1. Download JDK131 from sun, and install it;
    2. Download a good Java IDE (eg. Forte for Java 3.0 from sun) and do development inside it. It saves you trouble of set CLASSPATH for each different project etc.

    Uninstall your existing copy of iTunes. Delete any copies of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) installer files from your downloads areas for your web browsers and download a fresh copy of the iTunes installer from the Apple website:

    (The current build of the 11.1.4.62 installer was changed a few days ago, which fixed the bulk of the reports of MSVCR80.dll/R6034/APSDaemon.exe/Error-7/AMDS-could-not-start trouble ... but the build number on the installer was not changed. So we're trying to make sure you do the reinstall using a "new good" 11.1.4.62 installer instead of an "old bad".)
    Does the install with the new copy of the installer go through properly? If so, does that clear up the error message?

    If your old version of iTunes is still working - then I sugest you stick with that.
    iTunes 11 is a lousy update - It will not retain your playlists, you can't find and delete duplicates... and a whole arry of oyher issues. (have a look around this forum to see how many issues IT11 gives people)

    Thanks. Short of the sort of "generic" suggestions of restaring your system, if you haven't, and repairing disk permissions and verifying the disk, I don't have any advice right now. I'll do some research and see if I can come across anything. Meanwhile, someone else may have an idea.

    I've had similar issues using a 4th Gen running 7.6.3 with OS 10.6.8, but have stuck with it because the performance with 7.6.1 was actually worse in my situation. Your own setup may well perform differently, but you might want to monitor your TC’s behavior closely for at least a while. Or just downgrade to 7.5.2, as LaPastenague suggested. In my case, downgrading to 7.6.1 — I have a recent 4th Gen, which won’t accept any earlier basebinary file — caused serious disk spin issues, a not uncommon problem to judge from the many complaints about it appearing on this list.
    Apple: improve your regression testing, please!
    My question: Does anyone have a sense, based perhaps on Apple‘s past practice, of whether it is at all likely that there will be future firmware upgrades for pre-802.11ac TCs — or should anyone currently using these legacy devices just abandon all hope at this point?

    1. Remove iTunes and related components from the Control Panel
    Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order. Then, restart your computer:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
    Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components, may have unintended affects.If you encounter an error while uninstalling, try repairing the affected component:
    2. Verify iTunes and related components are completely uninstalled In most cases, removing iTunes and its related components from the Control Panel will remove all supporting files belonging to those programs. To fully resolve these issues, manually remove any remaining iTunes-related folders listed below.On 32-bit and 64-bit systems:On 64-bit systems:
    3. Reboot your computer.
    4. Download the iTunes installer. When prompted to select what you want to do, choose to save it to your computer.
    5. Install iTunes.
    Right click on iTunesSetup or iTunes64Setup.

    Windows XP: Select the Open option.

    Itunes displays a message saying "there is no SIM installed in the phone you're trying to activate" even if there is the same SIM that was working minutes before.

    “Could Not Activate EDGE” error message Update ...
    Well it’s going on day 6 and still sporadic to no EDGE on my iPhone. At one time, it was thought to be a defective iPhone – since my partner’s iPhone works just fine.
    After over three hours on the land line with AT&T and Apple, I was sent to the local Apple store for a replacement. Of course, as soon as I walked into the Apple store my iPhone worked just fine. ;-( The local store replaced my iPhone and suggested I go home and activate the phone as a NEW iPhone, that way if there was a bug in my data it would not carry over to the new phone. Did that and well… still sporadic to no EDGE. By the way, I have the Big White “E” to the right of the 5 bars and AT&T .
    AT&T said last week they has “Software” issues in my area, but the CSR I talked to did not know what the issues were or if they were the cause of my problems. He did say they would call me back today to see how my iPhone was doing, but alas, no call back.
    When I’m next to my partner, trying to access the same feature, his iPhone is just so fast. Mine hangs up, draws out and finally I get the error message, “Could Not Activate EDGE”. I am updated to version “1.1.4(4A102)”. New (refurbished) iPhone direct from Apple.
    I remember reading a while back about some problems others had when they upgraded to from 1.1.3 to 1.1.4. I never had those problems, but it sure looks like they may have started. Does anyone remember what the problems with 1.1.4 were, what was done if anything to correct them, and best of all any suggestions?
    By the way, this is Seattle, not some small – out of the way place where connection and signal strength is expected to be second rate. Also, I had full function of my iPhone from the day I bought it in June 2007, all the way up to Thursday March 20, at 2120.

    This is a known problem with Windows 7 Enterprise using certain Group Policy settings. Solution for me was to use another machine running Windows 7 Ultimate.
