Same issues in CS4 as CS5

So I have upgraded to CS5 hoping that the numerous issues I faced with CS4 would cease and go away. For a person in a position where Photoshop is the bulk of your daily use you might think that Adobe might have found the solutions for these irritating small issues that are easily found in repetition and can be repeated once you have them down.
Here are my issues with CS4 and now with CS5:
1. Every time Photoshop crashes my workspace resets as well as all of my brushes causing me to have to reset these on every crash.
2. Palettes still don't hold there place with persistence set. (mainly Illustrator issues)
3. Open documents as Tabs still resets every time you quit and then restart Photoshop (happens also in Illustrator)
This might seems small to others, but I use Photoshop for a least 10 hours or more a day and these small irritating issues add up to a lot of time when you are working in a fast paced production environment as I am.
Can someone at Adobe please look in to these issues????
I have been experiencing these issues since CS3.
You would think that programmers of such dynamic software platforms such as Adobe would catch this, but after it running my impression of CS4 and leaving a bitter taste in my mouth I thought a post might help.
PS
I am not a regular to these forums. I prefer to contact Adobe directly to discuss issues. I am just at wits end with these persistent issues.
Any help is appreciated.

Find out what is common to all your nine systems.  Do you all procure your RAM from the same source?  Is the same IT team responsible for all your systems as well as the network?  Do they just clone your systems rather than installing everything from scratch?
I agree with all the previous posters that this is something unique to your system.
Not once have I ever experienced any of those symptoms in CS3 and CS4, and I have been using them since the day each one of those versions was released—actually since the beta days.  I do not use CS5, but you say you've been seeing this since CS3.

  • Installation/uninstall issues between CS4 and CS5

I had CS4 installed. I purchased CS5 (downloaded it) installed that.  When I got the disks via mail, I tried to install that version (disk version).  I started having issues as to which program would open a .prproj file.  Often the CS4 version of Premiere Pro opened.  Not what I wanted.  I eventually uninstalled CS5 entirely and then reinstalled.  Then things were working fine.  However, I then tried to uninstall CS4.  (I have seen from numerous posts/comments to leave both on -- which I really don't know why.  Doesn't make sense to keep both versions).  I prefer not to have an extra 4GB of space used for programs I am no longer using.  However, in doing so, the uninstall didn't appear to do a perfect job.  And now I can't double-click a .prproj file.  This icon is also blank white.  I went into Set Associations and I can't assign .prproj to Premiere CS5.  In looking at the Open With window, I notice that some of the icons for other Adobe programs are all splewy (Adobe Encore is using the CS4 icon, Adobe Illustrator is using the PDF icon, Flash Catalyst is using the Air icon, etc.)
I could: a) uninstall everything, including Adobe Acrobat Pro (which I had purchased and installed prior to CS4 or CS5) and then reinstall everything -- sheesh that would take a while; or b) I could ask my friends here to explain and guide me!

    Hi Stix, Thanks.
I am not so positive that there is no difference between the download version vs the media version specifcially because in downloading the updates, the site demands you choose your update depending on how your software was installed.  I figured that the download would be smaller.  Perhaps you are right. And maybe it is the same, in either case, when I get a stack of disks, I tend to think there is more on the disk and the download version is merely the core applications.
Anyway, I had to uninstall everything CS4 and CS5 and then reinstall CS5.  Oddly, this didn't automatically fix my problem.  However, at least I was able to choose Premiere CS5 to open .prproj files and check off the box to use it as the default. (I wasn't able to before).  So now it works!

  • Contribute 6.5 can not ftp after years of no issues with CS4 and CS5

    The problem
Contribute 6.5 can not connect via ftp using settings that formerly worked (and still do) in CS4 and CS5.
    How we ended up here
I am the administrator website where
Our content editors have been using Contribute CS 4 and Contribute CS 5 without issue, 6+ years.
We are trying to upgrade to CS 6.5 to better support HTML5 markup now used within the site.
When attempting to configure a website connection in 6.5, Contribute alerts:
"Contribute cannot find the website files on the server. Please contact the website's administrator for assistance."
After closing the dialog box the failed connection is removed from contributes website connection list.
We have a shared hosting account and utilize ftp to publish changes.
Server is Win2008 with IIS 7.5
Again it's shared hosting, so read/write ftp are scoped to our account's directory.
We attempted this on serveral pcs including on a PC with a fresh install of Windows 7.
We can still connect successfully via ftp with CS4, CS5, dreamweaver, and Filezilla.
Which is why I believe this to be a Contribute 6.5 issue.
I've attempted the following troubleshooting articles:
Use network I/O logging to log operations, identify problems
I compared the I/O logging for both CS5 and CS 6.5 which both appear to log the same diagnostic steps.
Contribute FTP Server Checker (quite dated)
    All successes reported. No failures.
Troubleshooting a Connection CS4 (linked from with CS 6.5's help UI)
As indicated above, alternate FTP clients have no issue.
This appears to be similar issue to the following posts:
5301620 - HELP - FTP Connection Error with Contribute 6.5
5907180 - Contribute 6.5 can no longer connect to sites ...
Unfortunately, there has been no solutions posted on either of these threads.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I can PM the network I/O log details if there is adobe staff who can get them in the right hands.
(Again the logs only show successes.)

    @Zaldomoh
Have you found a solution or been given assistance from Adobe to resolve this issue? I'm having the same problem (CS 6.5 ftp'ing to a shared hosting enviroment). Details of our situation can be found on thread 1384686

  • Why is a color print from CS5 so different from the same image in CS4?

I have made prints from the same file using CS4 and CS5, and the prints from CS4  are showing what I think is good color.  My monitor is calibrated, and I have always been quite happy with prints from CS4.  When I make prints of the same files using CS5, the color is terrible compared to the CS4  print.  I am using the same printer, same sRGB color space and all the settings in the "Print" dialog windows.  I make sure the Color Handling box is set to "Photoshop Manages Colors" and I then go to the "Page Setup" box and make sure Color Settings is set to Off (No Color Adjustments).  I am using a New MacPro Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB ram.  I did notice that Apple Software Update did install Epson drivers after I installed CS5 Creative Suite 5 Design Premium. The color using CS5 looks the same starting in either 32 bit or in 64 bit.   Another thing I notice is that printing on an Epson 2200 Stylus and using their 13x19 paper that the prints are being cropped to 5/8 inch into the full screen size of the images. I.E. The prints are losing 5/8 inch of what I see on the 30" Apple monitor. in both dimensions of the screen image. This cropping effect is showing now using CS4 and CS5.  I have "Position" checked for Center Image, and Scale to Fit Media is also checked.  I've been using PS since version 2 and have always been quite happy with the prints from my Epson printers and the prints from my Photo Lab, but the prints I am getting using CS5 are terrible. All the settings are the same in both the CS4 and CS5 "PRINT" windows.
    HELP!!!!  :-)

I have tried all of these things. I have checked and double-checked the print dialog. Sheet after sheet of paper goes by. Ink, at $40 per tank, is wasted. Results are still wrong. I followed your video. You use an Epson printer. I use an HP. Different print dialogs. different results. Whatever worked in previous PS versions does not work now. PS CS5 requires new settings to get the results that match what was determined by years of evolution and fine-tuning.
I set up all of those print dialog parameters but it required an adjustment layer or two to get the results I got using previous Photoshop. So I could do that with every image I printed with good results using previous versions. There is nothing out of gamut in these images, so I don't have unrealistic expectations about more saturation in the prints. Anyway, it's an 8-color printer that can handle a pretty wide gamut compared to a 4-color.
Wade, I know you are trying to help but this finger-wagging "error in your ways" and "you need to change your ways" stuff is patronizing. I did "change my ways" and try everything in your video. All was not well on the paper. I'm glad it worked out for you but it didn't for me. Accept it. I'm not some novice hobbyist still getting the hang of Photoshop. I've been using Photoshop since version 2. Adobe changed something in CS5. I haven't seen Chis Cox or any Adobe staffer jump into this discussion and say otherwise. Maybe there are no answers from the folks who should know the most about it. Maybe they're working on it.
It's not the first time Adobe has broken a tool. Anyone remember what happened to Outline Stroke in Illustrator CS2? It had previously made a path that could be edited by selecting points but after CS2, it was broken. Illustrator made a filled path that was nearly impossible to edit with all of the overlapping points. It was finally fixed in CS4. It's hard to understand how a useful tool that functioned properly in every version since it was introduced became an unusable mess. Maybe that's the case with PS CS5 and printing.
With 4,300+ posts in 14 months, maybe Wade has more time to tinker and tell us about it. I don't.
Or I could just print in CS4. At this point it's not that important to spend several days of testing to be able to say that CS5 can print my legacy stuff that was created and printed with various color profiles over a 12 year period. Maybe a more disciplined approach to color management would be a good way to work in the future when creating images, I'm dealing with tried-and-true printable images that were not done that way.
As long as Adobe doesn't make me give up CS4 to use CS5, I'll use it for printing.

  • InDesign CS4 and CS5 scripting on Windows 7 unstable

Hello, have not found any solutions to our previous issues with RPC errors while scripting InDesign CS4 and CS5 on Windows 7.
Even more problematic, I just installed a trial version of InDesign CS5 on Windows 7, created a small JavaScript script that places a counter text from 1 to 10.000 in a one page, one frame document and found out this crashes when the counter is at around 4500 or so. This was the same issue with CS4, that's why I tried CS5.
These scripts run fine with CS4 on Windows XP and Vista. So what is the problem with scripting Indesign on Windows 7 ? Are there any settings that should be changed in Windows 7 to create a more stable situation ? Need to allocate more memory somehow ?
Anxious to know, for now I try avoiding Windows 7.
    Roelof Janssen

Shouldn't be a problem but you should be aware that if you upgrade to CS5.5 now you'll get a free upgrade to CS6 when it ships.

  • Is it possible to have Indesign CS4 and CS5.5 both installed on the same Mac? 10.6.8

We have a bunch of recent Intel macs at our corporation.  Currently they should all have 10.6.8.  They were all imaged from a base image that has Adobe CS4 embedded in it.
We are now using a packaging software part of the JAMF Casper suite and AAMIE to push CS5.5 to the end users.
The problem is that we want to keep CS4 on the end user's computers in case of issues.  That way the end users can try Indesign 5.5 and see if it does everything they need to do and still have Indesign for backwards compatiblity.
So we created a CS5.5 install package using the AAMIE tool which works fine.  We then use Casper to spam the package out to a Mac.
The issue that arises is that a few Plugin errors occur during the lauch of Indesign CS5.5 such as:
Adobe inDesign does not recognize InCopy Bridge UI.InDesignPlugin as a valid plug-in.
Adobe InDesign does not recognize InCopyExport.InDesignPlugin as a valid plug-in.
Adobe InDesign does not recognize InCopyExportUI.InDesignPlugin as a valid plug-in.
Adobe InDesign does not recognize InCopyImport.InDesignPlugin as a valid plug-in.
There was one more plugin error that occured before the first one but I forgot to write it down.
If we click okay to them, the application launches okay but when you quit and relaunch it, you still get one of the errors.
Is this because both applications are installed at the same time?
Is it offically okay as per Adobe to have Indesign CS4 and CS5.5 installed on the same Macintosh?
What else should we be considering what to do?

Well currently, I'm just testing this issue.  I just installed the trial version of  Adobe CS4 suite on my mac and then deployed the CS5.5 package on top off it  The resulting errors that I listed above are the same ones that occur when the end user has a licensed volume license install of CS4 and CS5.5.
So I'm still back to square 1 where when I deploy cs5.5 on an  end user's mac, they get those plugin errors when they launch Indesign CS5.5.
I am not sure about the licensing restrictions, I asked my Director and he is going to check with our VAR.

  • Encore CS5.5 Libraries - same, better than CS4?

Hey folks - just wondering whether Encore CS5.5 includes all the libraries we got in CS4. I'm on a Windows 7 64-bit machine and I'm running Prod Premium CS4 now. I just got the CS5.5 Prod Prem in the mail yesterday but I haven't installed it yet. My plan is to uninstall CS4 first since I don't anticipate needing it. But I am wondering about the Encore libraries.
Is there any reason to keep the CS4 libraries installed?
I ask because CS4 Prod Prem came with 4 disks + a Content Disk + a Learning Disk. CS5.5 includes just 4 disks total.
guess I'll find out when I install CS5.5, but I plan to uninstall CS4 first. So I wondered whether I should keep anything from CS4 on my machine.
Thanks for any light you can shed on this.
    And Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays!

I installed CS5 only on my new machine when I made the double upgrade (PC and CS5). I left CS3 and CS4 installed on my other machine. I find it handy, but primarily for testing questions other users have. I always use CS5 for work.
There have been a few issues where a bug is introduced and users say it helped to have CS4 as a workaround.
But if I were doing what you are doing today for a production only machine, I wouldn't bother to uninstall CS4. But I might pick that moment for a fresh install of Windows, in which case I would not install CS4.
I think Adobe had a strong recommendation not to install CS4 over CS5 (which you are not planning).
Once upon a time, the Encore libraries were apparently "extra" and installed from a disk called "functional content." The CS4 and CS5 functional content disk is NOT such content. When you install from disks, you automatically install the Encore libraries.
I can't compare CS4 and CS5 directly, but the Encore Library folder for CS3, CS4, and CS5 has files/folders respectively 1316/20, 1318/20, 1316/20. A "quick contents" compare in winmerge between CS3 and CS4 had only 4 differences (for example, CS3 used a mov and CS4 m2v for one of the motion menus).
The interesting (non)difference is that they do not appear to ahve changed the par of the menus form the pre-CS4 days. If you open any of the menus directly in Photoshop, it says the par appears to be incorrect and asks if you want to correct it. (I say no.) If you use "edit in photoshop" from Encore, CS4 and CS5 does not ask (it is obviously  making the correction, probably upon import to Encore). Encore CS3 makes no such adjustment.
What this means to me is the the Encore library menus are the old menus with the old pars. It doesn't matter much; there would be only a bit of distortion. I haven't tested to see if there is any. But for me it is evidence that the menus in CS5 are the same ones from at least CS3.
That said, you can simply copy the library folder to another location until you determine whether you need it.

  • Can I run Photoshop CS4 and CS5 on the same system?

I read somewhere a zillion years ago (right?) that you coould run CS4 and CS5 on the same system but at the time I wasn't even considering it.
Run on the same system - not ness to run at the same time
Or should I install it on a seperate drive (bootable) and go that route. What has everyone found to work and/or not work?
Thanks in advance for your help
    BJ

Yes, you can run CS4 an CS5 on the same computer.  They install in different folders and don't get in each other's way.  As a matter of fact, you will find many posts in this forum from the experts recommending to keep CS4 (or an earlier version) when installing CS5.  This way, there is no danger of losing any older plug-ins you may have that aren't compatible to CS5.
When I installed PS CS5 I had problems with my scanner driver.  Instead of spending loads of time fixing that problem, I just use PS CS4 when I want to spend an afternoon scanning things. I'm not recommending that "lazy man's" solution, but it is an example of how CS4 and CS5 can be used on the same system.

  • CS4 and CS5 at the same time

    Hi,
Can anybody tell me that; can we keep both Flash[and/or Creative Suite]CS4 and Flash[and/or Creative Suite]CS5 at the same time??? Actually i have both[CS4/CS5] in my machine, but the problem is when i start Flash CS4, it crashes, and sometime Flash CS5 also crashes. So is there any way that i can have both Flash (CS4/CS5) without any problem??
Can anybody help me out in this regard?

    Hi ,
You can Install CS4 and CS5 in same  machine . There shouldnt be any problem with that.

  • CS4 and CS5 Plugin Issue!

Having a major problem with Chameleon and CS4 and CS5. When I run the program out of CS4 or CS5:
    1) The Grab Fragment seems to work.
    2) When I open another photo and run Chameleon , Make Collage, I get
    1. Unhandled exception! Crash dump saved to c:\users\public\documents\akvis\crashdump.
Please help! I’m running version 6.0.1253.3084-r
    I now get amessage stating:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Error.
App terminated in an Unusual way.
    Contact app support
I used to run in CS4 however it does not run at all. I'm wondering if a Visual C file got corrupted.
    Thanks,
    Rudy

Without knowing exactly what the bug is in the Akvis code, I don't know.
But some third party plugins always need an update when new versions of Photoshop are released (especially those that try to modify Photoshop's UI).
We work hard to maintain plugin API compatibility, and most plugins work just fine in new versions, but there are always some problems to work out in third party plugin code.
(Macintosh plugins are going through a lot of problems in CS5 because we had to change the UI toolkit used, and many assumptions made by plugin UI code no longer hold)

  • Contribute CS4 and CS5 file transfer (publish) problem on Windows 7 64 bit

Have a problem with Contribute CS5 and CS4  on Windows 7 64 bit where upon editing a webiste for example to add a new page (or edit an existing one) and then clicking on "publish" a blank page appears on the website. To explain this further, If i make the required changes to the page and select the option to publish the file later then the file wirtten to the PC appears to be ok and has all the changes, but as soon as I publish it, only a blank page appears on the web server.  ie the upload (ftp) process does happen but the content of the page is being stripped out somewhere during the filt transfer process.
I have editied the same site with CS4 on windows XP without any problems.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated
    Thank you
    Chris

I seem to have solved the issue by downloading this install file
    ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.2/enu/AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe
    which installs successfully.

  • Upgrade to CS4 or CS5?

The agency I work for is currently using CS3, but there is a debate about upgrading to CS4 or to CS5. Because we work with a lot of print pieces one of the concerns is that most printers are probably still on CS4 so we shouldn't be more advanced than they are to avoid needing to save everything down. The other side of the argument is that the time saving features added in CS5 would be worth taking the time to save files down.
I think it would help provide some insight to hear from someone who is familiar with CS4 and CS5, and any issues they have experienced.
    So any advice?
    Thanks for your reply!

CS4 is not for sale. Only CS 5 is available. Moreover, any printshop worth using should have both. If they have not purchased CS 5, then they probably aren't worth working with. Upgrades like this are part of their cost of doing business. They can purchase it now or a year from now. If they purchase a year from now they will have one less year of work from the software at exactly the same price.

  • Design View Issue Dreamweaver CS4 - Taking forever to load design view

I am having an issue where my site takes literally almost a full day to load in design view. Once it is loaded everything works seemlessly but once I close down Dreamweaver and reopen it, I have to wait another day to get to design view of my site. All files open just fine in code view.
I have deleted the Dreamweaver CS4 cache folder, completely formatted my drive and reinstalled creative suite. I have also validated my code on W3c and everything checks out fine.
The majority of my site is based off of a template, but even when I remove all the template references in the html files from Notepad I am still having the same issue. My site renders fine and quickly however on Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari.
When loading any other site off the web into Dreamweaver I do not run into the problem so there must be something wrong with how my site is set up. Either the Template file is no good or somewhere else I am falling short. Can someone, please, please, please ( I am begging) help me figure out what is going on here.
My index file is located at - http://www.thebluedot.net/index.html and the template file is located at - http://www.thebluedot.net/Templates/index.dwt
I have searched high and low and even made a post on this same topic about a month ago but never came up with a resolution to my issue. I had given up on finding a solution to this problem for some time, but I really need to figure out where I am going wrong here!
    Additional Details -
I am running - Windows Vista Ultimate on a Core 2 Processor with 12 GB of Ram & Solid State Hard Drive. Everything on my system runs super smoothly except loading my site in Dreamweaver CS4 design view.
I really appreciate any help you can provide.

I have used CS2 Adobe GoLive to create and manage a website (pro-prosperity.com).  Now, I have CS4 Dreamweaver.  I got a new site set up on Dreamweaver using the site management facility.  I then have the contents of website available locally on Dreamweaver.  I can edit files.  But the main home page, index.html, is not displaying on design view mode for editing, although it displays everything on live view mode.  I have struggled for days and am not getting any difference in attributes of index.html and another .html that is displaying fine on design view and is editable.
I am really lost and am begging for any help.  Can you, for example, copy the home page from pro-prosperity.com and display on design view and edit it?  Please tell me what is in this file that is troublesome.  Thanks.
The first thing you should do is to make sure that this feature is turned on (it's off by default):
View > Code View Options > Highlight Invalid Html
It's not perfect, but it will notify you of some problems. In Code View, there are many problems highlighted. Some of them don't make sense, but are triggered because of a problem with a parent tag.
Be sure to make a backup copy of your file before doing the next step. Close your page. Go to Preferences > Code Rewriting, and turn on "Fix invalidly nested and unclosed tags", "Remove extra closing tags", and "Warn when fixing or removing tags". Click OK, then re-open your page. The messages in the dialog to tell you what was changed. This allowed me to see your page in Design View (I am using CS5).
Note: I suggested that you reset your preferences to turn off those 3 settings as they can cause problems with some markup.
In the long term, I suggest that you avoid nesting tables wherever possible.
    Hope this helps,
    Randy

  • CS3 script runs slow with CS4 and CS5

I have written a table transformation script for InDesign CS3, which formats an imported Excel table.
With InDesign CS3 the script runs well. Now I tried the same script with InDesign CS4 and CS5 and it runs very slow. It's about 10 times slower than with CS3.
I tried to turn off redrawing, but this didn't help. It even got slower again!
Does someone has made similar experiences? Could you solve the performance issue?
Do scripts in CS4/CS5 generally run slower than in CS3?
Does CS4 differ so much to CS3 that the script runs 10 times slower?
What can I do to improve the execution performance?
Thanks for any tips / advices etc.

I now have made some tests with profile / timing. Here are the results.
you find the code snipped below. It iterates first over all rows and then over all cells inside of the row. In the cell iteration, the function hasGapInLineBelow(...) does more iterations.
The example is with a table of 42 rows and 9 cells.
    I have compared CS3 and CS5
    there are 3 test cases:
for 1/1 means: first for-loop is in iteration 1 and second for loop is in iteration 1 (statements for first row and first cell done)
for 1/9 means: first for-loop is in iteration 1 and second for loop is in iteration 9 (statements for first row and all 9 cells of the row done)
for 2/9 means: first for-loop is in iteration 2 and second for loop is in iteration 2 (statements for second row and all 9 cells of the row done)
it's strange that normal variable assignments take lot of time (like the statement startPos = indexLeftNeightbourOfCurrentCell;) -> I don't understand why this can be so time consuming!?!
it's also strange why in "for 1/9" and "for 2/9" variable assignments take much longer than in "for 1/1"...
could I use another data type than array for the variable isMergedRow? Which one?
do you know any performance optimizations?
in which time unit ExtendScript Toolkit shows the measured periods?
how are the times calculated in loops? Are these the times sumed up over all iterations or is it just the time for a single statement?

  • CS4 to CS5 Upgrade has install/configuration problems ???

(My system is running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit )
    Awile back I purchased:
Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 (FULL version) on the Installable DVD's.
...and just recently, last week, I decided to bite the bullit, and go for the 64-bit CS5 version upgrade.
Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 (Upgrade version) -downloadable option (its cost $299.00 US)
Method 1./ Now, this seemed to be more of an installation/config issue for me. but after I ran the CS5 upgrade, it did NOT
    upgrade/change any of my Desktop icons/links ?
In other words, the same old CS4 Icons were on the desktop.
Instead, I had to goto C:\Program Files\Adobe\...CS5\..., and then create a shortcut to the CS5 executable onto my Desktop?
    Method 2./
ok, this so-called CS5 upgrade option obviously dos NOT work right.
So, I completely UN-installed CS4 and CS5, and started from scratch again, but this time I simply installed just
    the CS5 Upgrade binaries.
Well that seemed to work fine, and it also seemed to ievennstall all the 64-bit CS5 modules, though it also created some extra CS4 directories in C:\(x86)Program Files\Adobe... ? why would it do that ?
ok, well has anyone else also experienced any of this upgrade weirdness. ?
Note: I verified my Windows 7 64-bit was up-to-date, and I also "updated" CS5, actually it updates itself.
I have also had a couple "BLUE-screenies", and crashes" in CS5, none of which, in Windows I can really tell what is going on ?, and I never had these issues on CS4 on this same PC.?
I called the 1-800 number for Adobe Technical Support and basically they said the CS5 upgrade that I purchased should have worked fine. uhmmm ya'd think eh?
So, I thought this forum might be more "aware", and/or helpful regarding my Upgrading woes.
    any thoughts, would be appreciated.
    Thankyou.
    Rick.

An Adobe upgrade is an upgrade by price, only. What I mean is that you're buying a new, fully separate version of the Adobe software from whatever your previous version was, and upon installation, your previous version is left intact (hence the reason your icons did not change--CS4 was still installed).
An update, on the other hand (which is what the program automagically did), actually does replace files, but only in the version that you're updating. A semantic issue, perhaps, but an important distinction.
You can run CS4 and CS5 side-by-side if you like, but if you want to be rid of CS4 and maintain only CS5, you need to uninstall CS4--or preferably, reinstall from the OS up. I always like to start fresh when a new suite comes along.
