Same Library Two Hard Drives updates on both drives?

Not exactly sure where this should be posted, since it involves more than just iTunes.
I have a rather large library (60,000 songs, 350GB). I have this on two identical (manually copied) drives as well as other content such as an aperture library.
The reason for two drives is that I travel a lot and take the drive with me. While one drive stays at home for my wife to use. If I am out of town and add files to the drive and she adds files to the drive at home. what is the most efficient way to make these two drives identical again, both with the updates from each other?

Go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and use the Change button to set the location of the iTunes Music folder to the external. Then run Library > Consolidate and iTunes will copy the files over to the new location.
Once you do this, avoid starting up iTunes without the external connected, as that will cause iTunes to revert.

  • One iTunes Library Two Hard Drives

I want to share one iTunes Library or Media folder (Its the same thing isn't it?) between two bootable partitions. Each has its own copy of iTunes.
There are 3 partitions in total: The first 2 (mentioned above) each run an OS an the 3rd is a Data partition for storage. The Data partition is where I want to store my iTunes Media folder.I have managed to move and successfully run the iTunes Library/Media folder from the Data partition on the Lion partition. But it my computer won't play fair and share its musical toys with the other iTunes app.
I don't see any reason why this is not possible but just I can't get a shared parition to work on both Lion and Snow Leopard partitions. The partitions do have different versions of iTunes on if that makes a difference (Lion has iTunes 10 &  SL has  iTunes 11)?
I'd love to get this sorted iTunes takes up huge amount of space on my computer and I really miss my music when I'm working on Snow Leopard!
All helpful words an whispers much appreciated!

If you want to use two external drives to store your itunes content, there are a couple of ways you could go about it.
You could choose to have just movies (for example) on one HDD and everything else on the other. You could further choose to have your itunes music folder on one HDD and have all content copied to it by default. When it comes to movies (in this example) you can place these on your second HDD and add them to itunes by using OPT-drag, which will temporarily disable itunes from copying the file to your itunes library.
You could also entirely disable disable itunes copying files to your itunes music folder from the itunes preferences and manually manage all your content.
Personally I'd just buy a 2 TB (for example) drive and ebay your old drive once you have moved everything from it to your new one.

  • Help! how to apply Seagate hard-drive update from DVD drive on G4 Powermac

    Short version of story:
Just put Sonnet PCI SATA card in G4 Digital Audio Powermac running Tiger. Have replaced two IDE drives with *Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1 TB hard drive*. It's recognized and working fine. EXCEPT: this is the now infamous drive ST31000340AS that WILL most certainly fail if it does not get the firmware update that Seagate has made available. (These drives are failing like crazy-- Google for info, do not buy!) I have the firmware update on CD as an ISO file (of course Seagate makes nothing that it Mac friendly but this has worked for other Mac users). But when I try to flash the firmware by starting from the CD ("C" key held down), nothing happens. The G4 just goes ahead and starts Tiger 10.4.11. I have also tried holding down "O + F + option + control on start up. I'm not getting anywhere.
Since the drive is functional and it's the only drive in the G4, what am I doing wrong? Help!

I just got off the phone with Seagate who say that while my model numbers are the affected drives, my two drives have serial numbers that do NOT need a firmware update. (Yet!)
However, I'm not feeling very lucky. I took these two drives from my Maxtor One Touch III 2 TB external hard-drive because it was failing intermittently-- "now you see me, now you don't." Not very good for a backup drive! But Maxtor/Seagate is providing nothing for Maxtor One Touch III owners under warranty but another refurbished (as in previously failed) Maxtor One Touch III and asking hundreds of dollar$ for data recovery. There is not even a firmware update at this point. People should be avoiding Seagate Barracuda drives (these used to be the best of the best, but not now) or at least researching them *very thoroughly* before buying.
I guess, the good news is that I don't have to struggle with getting a firmware update to work on my PowerMac. Though thanks to you both I will know what to do if these drives eventually do need a firmware update. The other good news is that I got all my data back by pulling the drives from their enclosure which apparently causes overheating. I violated my warranty, pulled the drives, and got all my data back.
At the moment both of my Barracuda drives are happily purring away in my PowerMac G4 giving that old baby 2 Tb to play with. (I use iPartition so getting the drives recognized on the G4 isn't a problem.) And since I have my new iMac 3.06ghz 24" with all my data backup on WD external drives, I will only use the G4 networked for extra storage (backup for my backup). (I am also using Disk Warrior and Data Rescue II to keep an eye on these drives.)
    Thanks again for the advice.

  • HP Driver Updates vs Generic Driver Updates

    Hello,
Thank you HP for this Expert Day... and thank you, too, experts on duty !
Years ago just as soon as Win 98 was available, I immediately upgraded to it from Win 95. Doing so caused me to lose my audio capability... for which I never found a solution. Thereafter, I have never upgraded my OS until I purchased a new machine. The average time I keep a new machine is 8 years. Finances simply do not allow for more timely purchases of new machines. Therefore, I am always lagging way behind in the new OS arena.
When Vista arrived on the scene, I was still running Win 98 (on a newer machine than the one that lost audio). There was so much controversy regarding Vista that I elected to purchase a "Designed for Windows XP, Windows Vista Capable" laptop and desktop. I thought that I could "re-learn" Windows via XP and then transition to that new "beast" Vista when I felt more comfortable. Note: jumping from Win 98 directly to Vista just seemed too big a leap for me to make without an OS stepping stone in-between. I also figured that with getting a Vista capable machine I would be ahead for a bit. Well, as circumstances would have it, due to a problematic move out of state, all tech stuff went into storage... literally... for well over 3 years and the OS has changed twice since Vista, which I still don't have installed.
Anyway, I really want to give Win 8 (heck, even Win 7 would be nice) a try, but when I go to HP's site for my Compaq Presario C303NR it states that HP is not developing new drivers for this machine. Furthermore, I can't even find a support page for my Pavilion m7690y... closely numbered other models, yes, but not my specific model of desktop.
When I went to Intel's site for whatever new drivers I could find there, it states that all of their drivers are generic and that new drivers should be obtained from the machine's original manufacturer because the hardware may be manufacturer modified thereby causing the generic driver to not work properly.
When I last updated my sole machine, I purchased 2 laptops, Compaq Presario C303NR and a desktop, Pavilion m7690y, entirely because HP had chat available on out-of-warranty products. (Unfortunately, my purchased extended warranties on these machines gathered dust and were never used whilst the machines were in storage during that awful move out of state.) Is one-on-one chat still available?
If not, how do I find my way through this confusing maze of updating drivers so that I have honest-to-goodness working drivers? The laptops might not be too hard, however, the desktop was CTO and has a whole bunch of added "goodies" on it to deal with, i.e., personal media drive, etc.
I found a driver web site with nine  new drivers for Windows 7 for the laptops. The downloads appear to link back to HP's ftp. But if HP hasn't developed new drivers for the C303NR, then are these drivers safe to use?
Dear experts, said with utmost respect, can you please provide owners like me with some type of reliable guidance with this issue? I have no one else to ask who isn't just hazaarding a guess.
Also, HP, I understand that it is your primary business to sell NEW machines not support old ones; however, not everyone can afford to replace a machine at the same pace Microsoft is releasing new OS's. Therefore, have you ever considered some type of pay service for downloadable new drivers for old machines? Or, offering a LIST of necessary drivers for running the new OS on an older machine? At the risk of starting a whole different issue, I would pay a reasonable fee to go to a web page, have HP scan my machine, state which drivers needed to be updated and either have them installed on my machine or a list created of SPECIFIC drivers and where to find them for a reasonable fee.
If you have stayed with me to this point, thank you very much for Expert Day, thank you to the experts themselves, and thanks to all for the long read.
P.S. The only thing I might add is that I have been a long-time loyal HP customer. My first pc, purchased in 1996, was a Packard Bell; however, the 4 machines since have all been in the HP family... as have all of my peripherals, i.e., scanner, printer, all-in-one, wireless keyboard and mouse, personal media drive, and even my cameras. When my dad purchased his first machine (a laptop) and all-in-one, I steered him to HP. When I purchased my college-age daughter a laptop, it was a Compaq. I hope my unwaivering loyalty to HP is rewarded with some very much needed concrete help to this message and my need for drivers and Win 8.

    Hi:
Looking at both of your machines (I used the m7690n) as a guide for the desktop since it would most likely have the same hardware as yours, it appears they can both run windows 7 just fine.
The problem is...HP does not support either PC for windows 7.
That means you need to either use the drivers for Windows Vista or go to each component manufacturer's support and driver page and download the drivers they may have for Windows 7.
The first thing you should do when contemplating an upgrade to windows 7 is to run the windows 7 upgrade advisor which will report on your PC's ability to run windows 7.  Connect and turn on any peripherals you have such as printers, scanners, cameras, etc and the advisor will report on their windows 7 compatibilty as well
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor
If you want to go through with upgrading your PC's to Windows 7, and you get stuck trying to find drivers, I will be more than happy to help you out.

  • P6N SLI Platinum, audio driver update gives "No Driver was supported..."

I have the audio driver from the CD that came with the mobo, but I wanted to update it to the new version. Currently I have R1.67 2.32, I tried to install the driver (R1.83 2.51) from http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1140 but get the message "No Driver was supported in this driver package".
Also, I went to the Realtek site and got their even newer driver R1.84 but it asked me to remove the previous driver first, I'd rather check with the boards first to see what is going on.
    P6N SLI Platinum
    BIOS 1.4
    Realtek Audio onboard

Could you please point me to where I can locate Live BIOS, first I hear of it. Thanks for the input btw.
Another off topic question. Does the Dual Core Center work ok with Vista x64? Wondering just in case before I get to using it. On my first Vista install is seemed to work, 2nd format it would come up with 2 error messages and not start:
"Error! unable to load ntuneoem.dll" and "Failed to load overclocking driver! This program must run as an administrator."
I have ntune installed on my 2nd format (which I found out doesn't work in Vista 64 properly) but cannot uninstall it from Add/Remove. A wizard window comes up and closes in the same seconds when I click uninstall. Tried to uninstall using the MSI CD which with I loaded it, still gives an error (tried to google the error msg but the msg is extremely rare and doesn't point to the problem). Going to have to manually remove it it seems and hope I get it all.

  • "Critical" Video driver update corrupted video driver T400

I have a T400 type 6475 - P9U running windows Ultimate.  This morning I noticed I had a message in the Thinkvantage Toolbox.  The system had run a scan and determined that there were updates needed.  Unfortunately I downloaded the two critical updates.  One of them related the the video drivers.  The installation hung with an error about ATI drivers not being present.  I powered off and rebooted.  Now the drivers are corrupted, can't access my second monitor, and the best resolution is 800 x 600.  I tried to re-run the update and I get an access denied error, even if it is run as administrator.  Lenovo support is no help, the warranty expired last November.
Any suggestions appreciated.  I can download the ATI Catalyst Suite from Cnet, but I thought I would check in here first.
    Thanks,
    Brian

    Hi lofquist
According to Detailed Specification of 6475-P9U, your laptop does not have ATI GPU, probably something wrong with the ThinkVantage System Update. I am not too sure, you can confirmed it in the Device Manager.
Only some T400 ships with dual display adapters. If your T400 has ATI adapters, you would probably see switchable graphics options in Lenovo Power Manager. The purpose of both integrated and discrete display adapters is to achieve both battery life and performance. When you need more battery life, you could switch to Intel integrated GPU. When you need more performance, you could switch to ATI discrete GPU.
    Hope this answers your question.

  • Driver update for HP Photosmart 6510 e-All-in-One Printer - B211a using Mac OS X 10.10 YOSEMITE

Since I installed the last Mac OS X Yosemite ver 10.10 my printer is out of the driver update, besides the driver dowload page says it exist, but when I click on the version of my operating system 10.10, it only delivers for 10.9 which is Mavericks, missleading to dowload the wrong driver, Could somebody let me know how and when this issue is going to be fix? Are we going to be notified as this driver is available? That would be very much appreciated, thanks.

Hello, You can try Installing the OS X v10.10 Yosemite HP Print Driver from Apple Software Update. Hope this helps!

  • HT1364 I used these instructions to move my i-tunes library to the external hard drive that two different home pc's access. My playlists do not show on both Is it possible to have one i-pod synch amid two different computers that use the same library?

I have a sole i-pod and two pc's, used the instructions for "iTunes for Windows: Moving your iTunes Media folder" in the hope that I could synch my one i-pod between two different computers that are sharing the same library. Is it possible to have two seperate computers that only share an external hard drive (one wireless, one not) ? When I am looking at a shared library should it appear the same on both machines (ie: playlists/ purchased list etc)?

If it is moved correctly, playlists will display on both computers and it should be possible.
    Close iTunes.
    Hold <SHIFT> and launch iTunes.
When prompted to create a new or open an existing iTunes library point iTunes to the iTunesLibrary.itl file on the external drive.
The entire library should now show up with all playlists and playcounts.
    Do this on both computers.
Keep in mind that only one computer can access iTunes at a time, otherwise errors will occur when each computer attempts to write to or update the iTunesLibrary.itl file.
Syncing may work seemlessly with both computers, but honestly syncing is designed to work with one and only one computer.

Thank you Joe - I tried this but it's only showing a teensy amount of music - the stuff on the second users account as opposed to the giagntic library on the 'main' account. I actually went to a Genius Bar and they said that apple doesn't really want you to share music between accounts - parents don't want to hear their kids music etc. Which seemed strange, but it might be the case sadly   Thanks anyway!

  • Details needed for using two hard drives with one iTunes library

I posted this under the iTunes section but now that I think of it, it's more of an Apple TV question since I'm only concerned about how it affects my 2 ATVs.
I have a MacMini(G4) that acts as a media server for our 2 ATVs. I use one library on the Mini which has been using an external 750GB drive. However, I'm at nearly 95% capacity now and want to invest in another external drive and use both. So the question I posted on the iTunes section was...
"With far too much content in iTunes (mostly for the Apple TVs) and after reading numerous posts about using external hard drives with iTunes I'm convinced that using two external drives is my best solution.
However, I did want to understand a bit more about the details of how iTunes will manage or at least keep track of, the media. Specifically, I'm thinking of the case were I add a movie to iTunes library (of course it will not copy the file into the iTunes folder).
What will occur if I later change any of the tags for the movie (e.g., name, genre, year, etc.). Will iTunes update this information and then update the Apple TVs once they resync with the iTunes library?"
So for the very knowledgeable folks here on the ATV section, what exactly does iTunes do in this case? Will my genres be updated correctly if I change something even though the content is not copied to the iTunes folder?

  • Can I split my iTunes library across two hard drives?

I am busy ripping my huge movie collection into an iTunes library, so I can play through my new Apple TV to my HDTV. Trouble is, it looks like I'll probably need at least 4TB's of HD space before I'm all finished. What I would like to do is to buy an external HD unit with two 3TB drives, and split my iTunes library across them, while still being able to view all of the movies on both drives all of the time, and give me lots of extra room for future expansion.
Is this possible? If not, does anyone know of an aftermarket Thunderbolt 4TB external HD? I found a 4TB drive, but not with Thunderbolt.
    Thanks.

    I have the same question.
I would like to be able to do the same thing with all my media. I'm a DJ and certain aspects of Mac Os X Lion or iCloud, and iTunes Match, don't favor folks with tons of media, storage wise. I'm not happy that there's a limit on how much space iCloud will give you. Yet, I feel forced to upgrade to Lion within the next 4 days. I've been hesitant to rip my collection or even upload all those digital copies because where will I put all those files. I agree with needing like 4-8T just to store, but how? I don't have Thunderbolt, only Firewire on late '08 iMac 20" and USB on 08 MacBook 13" Aluminum. Bleh!
If you can use Time Capsule to back up your entire network with more than one computer, it would seem likely that you should be able to piggy back 2 xTime Capsules. I believe they come with 2-3Ts now and you can get them refurbished? I'm gonna look at Time Capsule Support to find out for myself, I'll let you know what I find, also. One thing I did noticed was that I had uploaded a bunch of Digital Copies from movies I had bought from Blu-Ray Combo Packs like 2 years ago and deleted them from MacBook for more space, only to recently find that they had been saved as purchased items from the iTunes Store. So now I can grab them from iTunes and watch them anytime off my Apple TV.
    Good Luck,
    Jenn

  • I have time machine saving onto two usb drives.  The backup is 4.6TB.  Each drive is 6TB.  Why is time machine only updating one drive?  (The other has been the same for two weeks.)

I have time machine saving onto two usb drives.
The total size of the files being backed up is 4.6TB.
Each external USB drive is 6TB.   So I have 12 TB of space for Time Machine.
Why is time machine only updating one USB drive?  (One drive has been the same for two weeks.)
I have selected both drives in the Time Machine settings panel.
My understanding was that it would do a full backup, and then incremental backups of changed files, getting rid of old copies as needed, and alternate between the two drives.
But it looks like drive A has one complete backup, dated two weeks ago, and drive B is the only one getting action.
There is a red icon on drive one that says the drive needs 120GB more space to do a backup -- which is strange since the whole backup set is only 4.6TB in size, and the drive is 6TB in size...

  • Two hard drives with exact same files showing different sizes

I have two WD external drives, one which I'm trying to dedicate solely to Time Machine backups.  In transferring data from the one I intend to use for that purpose to the other, I'm finding that all the files transferred but that the folders register as having different sizes (e.g. one video folder has the same number in each, but on the original disk it was 4.43 GB in total and is only 4.26 GB on the new disk).
I've read that there could be hidden system files that didn't move, but if that's the case does it matter?  Both drives are the same model but are differently formatted.
    Thanks

    but are differently formatted.
That could be the cause. Files are not written to a disk in bytes, they are written in blocks that are a minimum size. For instance, if the minimum block size is 1KB, the a 5 byte file will occupy 1KB on the disk. So, depending on the block size of the drive format, you may get different results.

Do the HD icons appear on your Desktop?
If not, adjust your Finder preferences:
Also check "Hard Disks" if you want your internal HD to appear on the Desktop.
Open one, open the other, should be no problem.
