Same Mac - Two Users - Two iPhones

My wife and I have a MAC with different profiles and we both have an iPhone. Is there a way for us to share our music purchases (like we can do if we bought a CD or DVD) without having to purchase items twice?
We would both like to listen to our music on our iPhones similar to sharing music in our house on our children's PC from our MAC.
It is one household for use on personal devices - a DVD license allows us to use the DVD in our player plus make copies for playing on a Mobile device within our household so why wouldn't we be able to do this within iTunes as well?

You shouldn't have any problem. Just sign in with the same iTunes account on both, yours and your wife's accounts, and it will allow you to copy purchased songs or apps, or ask if you want to download a free copy of an app that you already bought.
Sharing the music library is a little tricky. iTunes always keeps its essential files in the same location (user-music-iTunes) no matter where you store the actual songs/library, which means both accounts will have separate library files, so I am not sure if it will work when you move the library into the shared folder: it might not automatically update the database on both accounts when you add or delete a song. I don't know if there is a workaround, someone will most probably chime-in if there is.

• Sharing Music files on the same Mac among user profiles

How can I share music among user profiles on the same Mac? I have an itunes account for me but I don't want my kids to have one yet. So, I want to download music but then share some music files for their itunes on their profile. The Home sharing feature only discusses sharing among different computers on the same network.

• 1 mac 2 users, 2 iphones(+), 2 itunes libraries and 1 itunes account!

Hi. This is an enigma! Both my husband nad I have iphones which we sync with my mac although on different user accounts. We both use different libraries but also both use only 1 itunes account.
Problems 1: Husband has created his own account now but how do we transfer the purchases he has made via my account to his?
Problem 2: We both have found since upgrading iphone that we have duplicae enries all over the itune on the iphones only - not showing up in the individual iTunes libraries on Mac.
We have not had any problems for a long time with syncing - not since this new software. I have my account enabled on my iphone for game centre etc, but my husband has closed his as he keeps getting my details flashing up.
Not sure if this is an itunes issue or iphone? Both I think!
I realise that until the 'accounts' issue is sorted neither of us can use iCloud which is extremely frustrating - speicially as I just paid and downloaded Lion!

I vaguely recall reading about some commercial library manager that is supposed to help with merging libraries. Simply adding the files will not, of course, carry across playlists or some metadata some people want to keep such as playcount, ratings, last played date, etc. However, all the ways I can think of doing that are pretty complicated (and the commercial utility basically uses some of those tricks). You may be able to do playlists by exporting them from one library and importing in the keeper library.

• Two iPhones with same Apple id

What a mess. My wife and I have a single Apple ID that we use for a Mac, two iPhones and two iPads. With the latest IOS update our iMessaging has gone haywire. We both receive all messages and so does the Mac and iPads. I attempted to solve the problem by establishing a separate Apple ID for my wife's iPhone. No luck. How do I fix this?

You both need, & should use different Apple ID's for iCloud, iMessage & FaceTime. You both can continue to use the same Apple ID for iTunes content.
Your wife needs an Apple ID for iMessage, FaceTime & iCloud.
The Apple ID needs to be a verified email address. Once you have an email address, that can be verified, go here & create the ID:
https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/wa/createAppleId
Then on her phone, turn off Contacts, Calendars, etc. for iCloud. You'll be prompted to keep the data or delete it from the phone, then turn off iMessage, FaceTime & delete the iCloud account...Settings>iCloud...scroll down...delete account. Then, setup iCloud using the new Apple ID, turn on iMessage & Facetime.
This will have no affect on the ID you both share for iTunes content, & you can continue to do so.

• Using the same photos and music between two user accounts in the same Mac

Hi,
I think this question might have already been asked in the forum.
1. I have one MacBook Pro and two user accounts (One for me and one for my wife)
2. We are having two seperate iPhones with seperate AppleIDs
3. We want to maintain the apps / calendar / mail / reminders / contacts as seperate - Through iCloud (Seperate Apple ID approach) - All this is fine
4. All we want to have it shared is the Music files and the Photo library without duplicating
I have tried the shared folder approach for the music and having the iTunes point to that directory for the libary location in the preferences but unfortunately if she adds a folder to the library mine does not get updated unless I do a add folder to library and vice versa.
Whats the best way to deal with the Photos / Music sharing between two user accounts on the same mac
Thanks
Shas

To give other users read-only access to your iTunes library, use the Sharing features of iTunes. Sharing works over the local network as well as on the same computer. See the built-in help for details.
To give others selective access to your iPhoto library, you have the option of using iCloud Photo Sharing, if the privacy implications don't bother you. The images will be stored temporarily on Apple servers.
If you want to give full read/write access to more than one user, see the support articles linked below.
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
There is a way to share the library without moving it to a secondary volume. If you really need to do that, ask for instructions.

• Can two users on the same Mac sync contacts by using the same Apple ID in the iCloud settings?

Can two users on the same Mac sync contacts by using the same Apple ID in the iCloud settings?

Hi Barney,
That's exactly what I want. I have a personal user and a business user on my MacBook Pro. I want both users to have the same contacts so if I add a contact while I'm logged into my personal user, it will show up when I'm logged into my business user. I want both contacts books to be exactly the same; like you said. So, I used my business user AppleID when I enabled iCloud for my personal user and I enabled iCloud for my business user with that Apple ID as well. For my personal user, I selected Contacts and Calendars to sync with iCloud. For my business user, I selected everything to sync with iCloud. The problem is... it didn't change anything. I restarted my computer to see if that would do anything but nothing happened. I'm not super savvy with Apple products, so maybe I'm completely confused.
Hi Xeni,
Thank you for your response, as well.

• Two users in the same Mac accessing one TimeCapsule

Hi,
How can i make two user accounts in the same Mac access simultaneously the same TimeCapsule?
I've tried setting them to use accounts to connect to TimeCapsule as well as using a single password for TimeCapsule.
But i keep having the same problem. When one user accesses the time capsule the other gets ejected or the TimeCapsule folder appears with a forbidden sign.
What do i have to do?
Please help.
Thanks in advance

I think i understand what is happening.
Leopard mounts the TimeCapsule disk using mount_afp command and any disk mounted with mount_afp will automatically have as owner <user>:staff and read and write permissions only to the owner. All other users have access denied.
(If anyone knows how to change the default permissions of mount_afp please reply!)
If like me, you have two user accounts in the same Mac (lets say user1 and user2) and use fast user switching a lot like i do, since it is a family computer, you'll have serious problems since what happens is the following:
1. Mount the Timecapsule in user1.
2. Fast user switching to user2.
3. The TimeCapsule will appear unmounted in user2
4. Mount the TimeCapsule in user2.
5. List the /Volumes folder and you'll see something like this
drwx------ user1:staff /TimeCapsule
drwx------ user2:staff /TimeCapsule-1
No problem... I can live with having two mounts for the same network disk.
The problem is the following...
6. Fast user switch to user1 again.
7. Open a finder window
8. On the left the TimeCapsule is listed as a network drive (as expected) and is shows as mounted!
However... The association has changed and once i click the TimeCapsule icon in the sidebar it now points to /Volumes/TimeCapsule-1 and therefore user1 has permission denied.
9. I opened a terminal window with user1 and went to /Volumes/TimeCapsule and everything was ok!.
So the conclusion is... the finder window sidebar TimeCapsule is pointing to a Volume it shouldn't be...
How is it possible to correct this situation???
Please help! I just want a way to have two users on the same machine using the same time capsule at the same time.
Thanks!

• Share a library between two users on the same mac?

It is possible to share a library between two users on the same mac?

It's doable. As it's been pointed out Aperture has no provisions for file locking so you can't have two users accessing the library at the same time. This includes having one user having the library open only for browsing. Aperture doesn't have a +Read Only+ mode, when it opens the library, even if you make no changes to any images, the library will be written to.
This also means you can't have one user open the library and then stop using Aperture but still have the library open and then have another copy of Aperture open on the library.
Of course if you have two copies of Aperture running even they are on different libraries you'll be in violation of the license and you'll have bigger problems to worry about then a toasted library.

• Two users (on the same Mac) using same RAID simultaneously?

O.K. I know you should never never ever connect two different Macs to the same RAID unless using Xsan. . .
How about connecting two users on the same Mac simultaneously?
In other words, can I have one user manipulating data on the RAID in the background while reading the data using a second user (on the same Mac)?
Thanks,
Ed

That depends on the application in question.
Since all the data requests are coming from the same Mac, you don't have the issues you would have if you had two different machines talking at the same time.
However, it now depends on whether the application(s) you're using supports file locks.
As long as the application that's manipulating the data properly locks the part of the file it's working on, and that the application you're using to read the file reads the locks and knows whether or not it's OK to use that part of the file, you should be OK.

• How to access a shared disk with two users account on same Mac

I am seeking how to share / access at same time with two accounts on a same Mac a disk that is shared with a TC or an AEBS. When a user account is connected to the shared drive and when I switch to the 2nd user this 2nd user cannot access / see the content of the shared drive and it receives an error message. I want to use this shared drive to store some GB of movies I do not want to have on my MacBook Pro SSD but still bring able to access them from the two accounts that are set on my Mac. Just like for an internal drive. I have tried all I could but it does not want to work. How do I do that ? Thanks.

If you were running this software, the Mac's Bonjour would automatically "discover" The Linux machine.

• Two users on the same Mac - jointly manage iTunes library

Well,
Myself and my wife share the same Mac at home. I would like to have the same music library on both accounts that either of us can administor. I know I can just turn on file sharing but that can be slow to load if there is a large library, it means both accounts having to be logged in and and one of the account will just have listening priviliges. I do not want to duplicate the librarys which i know is one way around it. So is there any easy way to do this?...Any assistance or suggestions would be appreciated.
I do hope you understand the question...
Thanks

I there, the same here. this is the way I did.
I put all the library under the shared folder, say Music. Then for every month like October 2006 I have created a folder and we keep adding music. Our iTunes points both to shared/music.
Both work on the same library / month. Once a while, one of us re-import only the latest month and will have the latest changes. Once the month is over, we create a new dir Nov 2006 and start working on that. The other months are backup and ready. Any refresh would be only the latest month. For privileges settings, have a applescript that applies automatically rights to any file in a month-music folder (does not matter who adds the file).
Hope this help. iTunes needs two features badly (like iPhoto):
1) a mechanism that automatically detect new files in the library
2) a mechanism that automatically detects changes in metadata and synch
Strange they have it between iTunes and iPod, they should have it between iTunes and Finder

• Can I synch two iPhones to the same apple user ID?

My husband & I have shared our Apple ID but it hasn't been a concern until our purchase of two iPhone 4s phones yesterday. I have synched mine up with our account & I use the username & password when it's requested. Not sure what to do for my husband's phone. Help anyone. Thanks!

Allan I have my iPod, MacBook and iPad synched with it. How will synching my husband's phone impact my music & Apps? When I synch my phone do I just uncheck his apps so they don't go on my phone and he does the same? Also for instance on game center on my iPhone I had to enter our apple ID and password to get in. Can he enter that same name and password on his phone. Sorry if these questions seem done. I'm learning. :-)
