Same old: Buzz with iMic with vocal microphone

Yes...an old topic. I would like to do a simple voice over track in Garage Band. I bought a $30 mic at Radio Shack and then the current iMic device. I've got everything set up properly, but I get a buzz/hum in the track. This is on a PowerBook 17". I've tried plugging in to each of the USB ports to see if there is any difference....no. I tried the set up with my iBook and got a different kind of buzz/hum, a little quieter, but still there. Other threads on this topic suggested trying your set up on different computers to try and isolate where the ground loop is happening. Still don't know. I've searched the area for any sources of electrical interference etc. Is this an impedance issue regarding the mic or do I need some sort of filter or mic preamp (I thought the iMic eliminates the need for that?). Anway....any suggestions? I'd really like to clean up that voice track. Thanks

Rock....I tried moving the darn thing around as well, but with no success. I have found that increasing the amount of 'noise gate' in the effects section of the track info seems to squelch the buzz in between words. It limits it quite a bit. The buzz still sneaks in to the speech part, but the voice itself more or less masks it. This is not high fidelity I'm attempting. The soundtrack I'm making will be strictly listened to on computer speakers by visual art people...not sound people, and at modest volume. When I play what I have done so far, it sounds fine for these purposes. In fact, the reverb and other small effects I've put on the voice make it sound pretty darn professional. I think if I were to get more serious about this type of thing in the future, it seems that using a small preamp in line, is better than these USB devices which seem to be vulnerable to all kinds of noise, as this forum seems to indicate. I can't imagine pushing an electric guitar or bass through one of these iMics.
I'm leaving this topic open, if any one else has suggestions about the use of iMic or better ways to do what I'm trying to do. Thanks!

  • The same old doubt with joins

    Hi,
cant get this thing off from me :-)....so please dont get annoyed...
Still the same childish doubt got into me after discussion with a friend of mine....
(and ghosh i dont have the tkprof or such settings with me to test the sequence)...
    select a.col1, b.col1,c.col1
    from a,b,c
    where a.col1 = b.col2
    and a.col1 = c.col3
    and a.col1 < 10;
how will the parser execute this??
    one opinion
    A)
1.select all the columns from a,b,c and create complete cross joins between them
    2. apply the filter a.col1<10 first as it comes last in where clause ( dont think this is no longer valid for CBO )
    3. apply second join condition and filter
    4. apply first join condition
    5. release the result sets
    second opinin
    B)
    1. select table c and make it driving table (valid for CBO???!!!)
    2. select table b and make a cross join with b
    3. select table a and first filter a.col1<10 then join with the above cross-joined-resultset based on the join conditions
    4. pass the final res
    confused!!!??
(Michels has already cleared the doubt in one of the posts , but still I got 2 different opinion from people who are experienced ....)
so just wanted to take a final confirmed opinion thats all

    First off:
    2. apply the filter a.col1<10 first as it comes last in where clause ( dont think this is no longer valid for CBO )
This was never valid. Even the RBO had more sense than to just work blindly through the WHERE predicates in a fixed order.
    Also,
    > 5. release the result sets
is not really right - if possible it will begin to stream rows back to you before it has fetched them all, whereas the above description makes it look as though it gathers all the results up in some temporary store before passing them all back at once.
Regarding the optimizer's joining strategy, any permutation and ordering is possible including cross joins, although it has various strategies that mean it does not have to work through every conceivable permutation. It will try various approaches, calculate their costs, and pick the one it thinks is going to be most efficient.

  • The same old problem with temperatures (K8N Neo Platinum)

I have problems since bios v1.0 on my K8N Neo Platinum with temeparutes.
I have installed a Prometeia Mach II St colling unit
I Tested the v1.0 official bios, the temperature was allways -65º full ou idle, what it is impossivel.
In the moment i flashed the bios to v1.2b5, temperature changed to 49º, and I did not move in nothing. The same temperature appears in all bios since v1.2b5. Now I have the v1.4b2 bios
    Sorry the Bad English

Here are the instructions to reflash the BIOS for your K8 Neo. I am currently running ver.1.4 with little problems. My only snafu is the LED for my optical mouse stays lit even when system is off, however I have no RAID, Ethernet, onboard sound, or SATA drives. I have just a simple basic system, and I don't overclock. My board is the K8 Neo Platinum socket 754, with an AMD64 3000+. YOU MUST HAVE A FLOPPY DRIVE CONNECTED TO SYSTEM FOR THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO WORK!.
Flashing BIOS on K8 Neo per MSI. READ ALL instructions before starting.
1.Check your BIOS for flashing protection and disable it.
    2. Know your board model#. a. Open case and find model# on the board between the PCI slots, or b., boot system and at first DOS screen you will see 'W7030ver1.4122101'. This means you have a MSI model 7030 motherboard with BIOS version 1.4 issued on 12/21/01.
3.Download the Bios that matches your motherboard model and version#.(I believe the Neo Plat had two versions, 1.0 and 1.1). I have 1.0. It will be found between the PCI slots. Create a folder on C: drive labeled 'C:\TEST'
4.EXtract the BIOS file to C:\TEST folder.
5.Create a boot floppy. For XP, at Desktop double click My Computer, right click floppy drive, click Format to format the disk, then click 'Create MS-DOS Boot Disk'.
    6. Set boot order to floppy. Hit F11 to select boot device.
    7. Insert boot floppy and restart system.
    8. At A:\ prompt type in the following,
    C:\ (enter)
    cd\TEST(enter)
    awdfl833c(space)w7030nms.130
The w7030nms.130 is the BIOS file name you downloaded to C:\TEST. Keep in mind you're dealing with DOS file names, so you may need to open a DOS window in Windows, and search C drive for the TEST folder and write down the DOS file name of the BIOS file BEFORE you start the BIOS update.
    9. Reboot when prompted. It shouldn't take more than 10 seconds to update the BIOS.

  • Linkification (any version) does not work with FF9.0.1. Here we go again! Same old problem. Why don't you guys develop a permanent fix??!!! Don

Here we go again. Same old problem with FF updates. FF9.x.x will not allow clickable internet links. They are dead when typed. ALL IE versions have clickable links BUILT IN! Why can't you do it??? Don't blame it on "third party add on incompatiblity." It's not their fault. It is YOUR fault for not including it. Do not blame users either.
xpi files are not compatible with FF9.x.x even when dragged on to it

'''''Linkification''''' was not developed by Mozilla.
*The third party developer appears to have abandoned the Add-on (no longer updates it).
*The last update available on the Mozilla Firefox Add-ons site ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/linkification/ ) was made compatible only through Firefox 3.6.x
*The developer posted version 1.3.9 on his/her own site which was made compatible through Firefox 4

  • TS2998 Same old problem, Apple vs. Cox

Same old problem with Mountain Lion using Cox server. Can receive email in MAC MAIL but not connect to send. Fix?
All settings are per Cox support information.

Please help with sorting out the issues with the Cox email services?   Sorry; I'm just not that powerful.
If you're set up per the published specs (and those aren't easy to find), then Cox (mail or doc or the Cox network) is probably broken.  What's posted at various of the Cox support sites indicates that the SMTP send path is either TCP 587 with SSL/TLS enabled or TCP port 465 with SSL/TLS enabled.  Cox does appear to use different SMTP mail servers, depending on your service class and your particular geographic location.  Cox also appears to use POP and not IMAP, and specifically uses POP3 Port 995 on pop.cox.net; that's the SSL/TLS port for POP3.
What to do?  Work with someone that you can share your credentials with, verify the error, and (if it can't be resolved) contact Cox and work through this error with them.
Or as an alternative, don't use Cox for your mail.  I deliberately chose a mail hosting provider, and not the ISP I work with, for mail services.  That mail hosting move was easily very affordable, and the mail provider quickly answers the (few) support tickets I've needed very promptly.   In other words, the ISP deals with the network wiring, and the mail hosting provider deals with the mail servers.  And mail works.
Or yes, you can use Google or another (free) mail provider, but - and with the providers of any of the free services in general - getting support when something goes weird is far from certain.

  • Can I use both newly cloned MBPR retina and old-MBP with same Time Machine

When my new-MBPR retina cloned from the old-MBP back up in Time Machine via migration assistance, will this newly-cloned MBPR continue thereon backing up with the same old-MBP back up in Time Machine? I.e. continuing same timeline?
And what happen to my old-MBP back up, if I continuing to use my old-MBP with the same Time Machine on? Will TM recognised 2 different MBP and thus creating 2 back ups? I seem to have problem to keep 2 MBP running with same TM. Programs not responding even force quitting them!
And what should I do to use both? Appreciate your help. Thank you.

OK, but in general I can use this one device as both file storage and Time Machine.
I thought that (for some reason) once I set up the Time Capsule to act just as Time Machine storage I would be unable to access it as a plain file storage.
I have just tested it now, and it seems it can work as both - file storage and Time Machine. I can see the Time Machine backup file on it and folders where I can dump regular files.
The only thing I would need to occasionally do is delete some old backups to keep Time Machine segment below 1 TB just so I have plenty of space for regular files.
    This thing is awesome. :)

My itunes account was set up under an email account that has been deleted. I started a new i tunes account but have the same device as with the old account. How do i keep my music thats on my ipod touch from being deleted whin i sync it to itunes after purchasing new music?

I have the same problem (deleted email account). I think I mistakenly set up an account when I was buying an Apple product online, not realizing that it would be the same ID as my iTunes.
What is the way to actually contact Apple?
I have been clicking around in circles for hours! Will I have to pay them to resolve this? I don't have any products still have applecare . . .

  • We are recording 2 voices over an instrumental track. Every time there is a rest in the vocal part the volume of the instrumental track noticeable increases. Is this fixable? We are using Alesis multi mix 8 with 2 microphones.

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History > Show All History" or "View > Sidebar > History") or via the about:permissions page.
Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache, history, and exceptions, so be cautious and if you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make a note of those passwords and bookmarks.
You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of the involved files.
It doesn't have any lasting effect, so if you revisit such a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.

  • Same old problem in Lion Mail with Fonts

Apple please let us finaly define a standard font familiy for new emails! Since years this is a very simple need from so many users. The problem is, that the sended emails looks very unprofessional in other clients like Outlook, because there is NO font family definition in the source code of the email - the result is, that the standard font of the client will be displayed to the user. In Outlook this is Times New Roman for example.
To write the text first and THEN change the format is NO solution for a everday 100 times process!
The old trick with the definition of a font in the signature and overwrite the first line with the content text also no longer works with Lion, because the cursor goes somewhere by hitting enter on the keyboard if I am in the "signature area".

Yeeeeees. Please - this is unbeleiveably frustrating. Apple, this is the longest standing bug I am aware of.

  • Fed up with The same OLD APPS in App store.

I have been staring at the same old Apps in App store since july 11th. Please developers give us some more Apps. I have read that Old jailbroken Iphones have 1000's of Apps. We have a few hundred.

You also need to be aware that it isn't just the developer...Apple has to approve the apps before they will permit them on the iPhone. That process takes time. Only Apple approved apps are then added to the app store.
Second, you will never see all the apps that are available on jailbroken phones because the SDK does not permit access to the phone features themselves -- if you look at those jailbroken apps, you will see all kinds of apps that access the iPod feature, the video features, the camera features. You will find bad MMS apps, you will find all kinds of things that will never be approved by Apple for the iPhone and won't end up in the official Apple App Store.
Be patient, more applications will come, but you have to be realistic about what will and what will not be available.

  • Help with vocal filter

I just got an interesting project where I'm asked to filter noise and raise the level of a voice recording that was probably done by an answering machine, hand recorder or other such low-fi device. You can barely hear the female voice above the room noise and audio hiss. Similar to a lecture hall with air conditioning motors or electrical buzzing near the recorder and the source voice perhaps 30 feet away, with no microphone. The noise is more consistant than the speaker.
Can anyone recommend a filter or group of filters within Logic to start with?

I'm not hopeful for using anything within Logic - the voice seems too close to the surrounding noise, so a gate won't help much. The hiss is fairly easy, but the electrical noises and motor sounds might be too mixed in with the voice to allow much filtering without destroying the vocal itself.
If this is important to you, you might try SoundSoap. It has tools that might help, as it can sample the noise and apply a filter to reduce it, as long as you have a section that has no voice which you can sample.
    http://www.bias-inc.com/products/soundsoappro/
    It's not cheap, though.
You could try using a combination of Logic's Expander and Match EQ and experiment, but you describe a situation that's going to be really tough.
    Good luck!
