Same photos take up much more space on ipad than iphone

is this supposed to happen? the exact same photo selections i am syncing to both iphone and ipad take up much more room on the ipad. on iphone what takes up 6 gb winds up taking up over 22 gb on the ipad!!

The file size thing is a feature, not a bug. The version that your iPhone gets is converted to a smaller size, as it was thought that people wouldn't need to be sending huge filesize photos from your iPhone, but an iPad is meant to display higher resolution photos, so it can work with a weightier version of the file.

  • Photos take up much more space on iPhone than on disk?

I have 3800 photos exported from Picasa with a max-width of 480. On disk, they take 267Mbytes. After optimizing and transferring to the iPhone, suddenly they're taking 2.45GB ??
Secondary question, repeated from others: Can you store higher-res pictures on the iPhone and zoom into them? My experiments with optimizing showed that photos exported at 1600, 800, or 480 all look the same after being synced to the iPhone.

You can resize on your computer & then import.
Or use Simple Resize app http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/simple-resize/id327776379?mt=8 on your iPad. However, you'll have to import some, resize & then import/resize in steps.

  • After restoring my phone and putting music back on it, the same music takes up much more memory

I  recently had to restore my phone.  I started to put the music back on it, and the files are  taking up much more memory storage than before.  It is the same music, though not as much as before, because it wont fit.

    Hi miriamh!
I have an article here that addresses syncing with iTunes. This article can help you understand the syncing process a little more, and can be found here:
    iOS: Syncing with iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1386
You may want to check to make sure you are syncing the exact same amount of music as before. You can also utilize one of the options for syncing that would downgrade higher bitrate format songs to a lower bitrate so that they take up less space on your phone. That option is visible here:
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

  • Time Machine takes up much more space than actually data backed up...

Every time I backup with time machine, it uses up gigs of space on my backup drive, regardless of increment or decrement of data on Mac.  I could put 200 megs since last backup and TM eats 4 gigs.  I don't change the file exclusion selections at all.  Just curious if anyone knows why that is?

I find it hard to believe I added 4gb since last backup.
You'd be surprised. Sometimes you add more than you think. Any downloads, recently edited documents, etc all will add to the total. Plus system files such as browser history are updated and backed up as well. If it has been a few days since your last backup, I wouldn't worry. If this is happening ALL the time and you know that you have been barely using your computer, you may have a problem that needs to be further looked into.

  • Why does it take more space for pictures to be stored in iPad than iPhone?

Why does it take more space for pictures to be stored in iPad than iPhone?
The same pictures in iPhone utilises half the storage space than in the iPad.

Photos on the ipad should take up little  more space than It does on The iPhone because of the screen resolutions size.
Keep in mind If the photos are being stored on the device by Photo stream they will Take up less Space or if The photo Are being store by itunes syncing they may take up a little more.

  • Why do songs from cds take up way more space on ipod?

Everytime I try to upload a cd to my ipod it takes up way more space.  Can only fit a few cds on the shuffle.  Why?

Well, an update has come from another forum and I thought I would post it here in case others stumble here in the future searching for an answer to the same question.
Apparently,  the non-embedded artwork on the iPod is in an uncompressed format instead of JPG and therefore takes up more space.  Seems a bit odd, seeing as I am loading jpegs onto the iPod.  I can only presume the iPod decompresses them at some stage.

  • How do I get more space to update my iPhone 4 to iOS7? I am currently on iOS 6.1.3 with 6.3 GB capacity, 1.4 GB available AFTER deleting all apps, photos, music, and videos, and I need 3.8 GB.

Update using iTunes on your computer. The space requirement does not apply because of how the process works via iTunes as opposed to over the air.

  • Icloud photos use different amount of memory on ipad and iphone. Anyone know why?

i Recently set up photos library on icloud. I have the same number of pictures on both my ipad and iphone, yet the memory usage is nearly double on the iphone. i can't think of a reason for this. Does anyone have an explanation?

So does that mean, that if I have more available memory on one of the devices, then the pictures will be stored at a higher resolution?
I have both devices set to optimise the pictures, There are the same number of pictures on each device, yet on the iPad they use 150mb but on the iphone they use 300mb
There is a little more space available on the iPhone, so maybe the resolution they are stored at, is varied according to space?

Is your iMac the computer you normally sync your iPad to?
If so put your photos into albums in iphoto on your imac. Then start iTunes on your iMac and connect your iPad to your iMac. In iTunes on your iMac select your iPad in the left column and selectPhotos in the right column. Scroll down and select the photo albums you want on your iPad. Then select Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes. This will load the sleuthed photo albums onto your iPad. Do the same for iPhone.

  • How much more space will iLife/iPhoto 08 take up?

I'm running on a laptop so I'm not one with exessive disk space.
I'm wondering how much disk space iLife 08 takes up over iLife 06, iLife o6 said it took 10 gigs. iLife 08 documentation says it takes 3gigs, that's it. So is that 3 gigs more to a total of 13? or just simply 3 gigs?

Some art from the iTMS is ~500KB! ANd if you have 10 songs from the same album, that's 5MB per album...
On the iPod, there will also be a very small version of the artwork for the iPod's now playing screen. This very small piece of artwork won't take up any significant amount of space.
The artwork is stored with the AAC/MP3 file, even if Show artwork is NOT checked.
As you described, checking the Show Artwork box will simply add a thumbnail of the cover art but this is in addition to the incuded artwork.
I have tested this a bit and it's a pain, especially on smaller iPods.
Adding artwork will add to the file size.
Putting the music on the iPod and checking the file size on the iPod reveals they are the same size, even on my Mini, which does not do artwork.
I have JPEG'd the artwork way down in size and compared and it really does save space on the iPod, even if Show Artwork is not enabled.
I have dumped all the artwork and I can get ~100 additional songs on m4 4GB Mini.

  • Non-existent photos take up lots of space

    I have a 16GB iPad 3.
iTunes on my Mac shows that 2.9GB of space on this iPad is taken up by "Photos".
I've two photos on this iPad - one is a screenshot of a webpage, the other the only photo I've ever taken with the iPad's camera.
I'm syncing no photos to the iPad.
So how on earth can this consume 2.9GB of space?

Restore.  Note that it's not quick.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.

  • Does copying files into the iTunes library take up even more space?

Hi everyone, I recently upgraded to Leopard and decided to give Boot Camp a try so I backed up everything onto my external hard drive using Time Machine and created my partition for Windows. In doing so, I know have an empty iTunes library.
I just copied everything to my hard drive using Migration Assistant, and although all of the files were locked because I didn't have enough "permission", i fixed that problem. However, when I tried to copy all of my itunes folders into my library, it said that I did not have enough space on my computer for it.
Dose copying music into the library use even more space than what it already is? I'm confused, because I thought that if i have the music files in my computer already I don't need to make another copy of it to place into iTunes...or maybe I'm just confusing myself.
Could someone please just let me know how I can add my music into my library? I really don't think this should be so difficult, I'm just terrible with computers. Thanks!

Under Preferences -> Advanced you can uncheck "copy music to iTunes folder", this should fix your problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • Why is the iphone5 so much more expensive in Canada than in the US??

With the Canadian dollar near parity, why is the cost of the new iPhone5 so much more in Canada???

    It's not.
Announced US pricing is for a subsidized device on 2yr contract.
All other pricing that I have seen for iPhones in other country's is for non-subsidized devices.
