Same Process, Different File Sizes

My newness is surely showing but I seem to be getting different results from a very similar compression process.
Video A is 1 minute in length. I edited a long video, marked this footage as an Independent Clip, pulled it to the browser bin, then exported as H.264. The file size came out 8MB, nice and small. The source is DV, 4:3, recorded on a cheap 1-chip.
Video B is 5 minutes in length. I split a long video into subclips based on markers set by "DV Start/Stop Detect". One of these subclips I edited further, down to 5 minutes. I added an AV fade-in at the start, fade-out at the end. It's the only thing in that sequence. When I export the sequence as H.264, the file size comes out to 1GB. All variations I try on export quality and codec results in that size or larger. The source material is DV, 16:9, recorded on a Canon XH-A1 (3-chip).
I'm trying to track down what's causing such a huge disparity. Is it the quality of the source footage? The aspect ratio? The difference between Independent Clips and Sub-Clips?
I'm trying to get the 5-minute video on YouTube. I'm having a hard time uploading 1G. Any suggestions?

Hello,
Try MPEG 4 instead of H.264 and I think you'll end up with a smaller file size. When you control click on your sequence and select Quicktime Conversion - click on settings and try adjusting the frame size too and see if that helps to make the file smaller. You can also play with quality.
I cannot answer why there's such a huge difference between those two files even though one is only four minutes longer than the other. As far as sub versus independent clips, I cannot say anything about that either.
Good Luck,
Richard

Hi - for any photo, info in mountain lion shows a different file size than Photoshop does. I've tested with both CS3 and CS6 on 10.8.2 and get the same problem. This doesn't happen with CS3 and OSX10.4 or any previous versions of Photoshop and OSX. Anyone know why?

this one is actually a really rare symptom of a flaky connection to the ipod on a Windows PC. there's more going on in terms of hardware on nanos and 5th gens than in the earlier models ... so if the connection is flaky to precisely the right/wrong degree, itunes will see the ipod, but misidentify it as an earlier version of ipod.
tracking down the cause of the flakiness can be tricky ... as you already know ...
just checking. have you tried connecting with a different (known-good) USB cable? does that seem to have any impact on the rate of occurence of the problem?

  • In iphoto, how do i save a photo after editing, in the same or higher file size, it's saves in a lower size

in iphoto, how do i save a photo after editing, in the same or higher file size, it's saves in a lower size

It's rather more complicated that this.
iPhoto is a lossless editor. You don't lose any quality on your shot in iPhoto.
The file size you see reported is the size of your iPhoto Preview: this is what gets used if you access the data via a media browser. It's a "good-enough-for-most-uses" version of the shot. Email it, upload to websites, use it in Presentation, Word processing file etc
If you want to set the quality yourself then Export the photo using the File -> Export command.
You can choose to export to Jpeg, Tiff or png. Tiff is lossless but the file sizes are up to 10 times larger. Jpeg allows you to choose different qualities: High, Medium or low. The difference is the amount of compression involved. High quality means very little compression. It's not unusual for photos exported at this setting to have a larger file size than the original.
Which setting you choose depends on the use you intend. Further editing, printing then high is important. Sending to Facebook? Well low will do just fine there as they're going to trash the file anyway.
But the key point: the file size only becomes an issue when you export.

  • Communication between thread in the same process using file interface.

    Hi,
I am developing  driver and i need to communicate between two thread.
    >can anyone guide me on implementing communication between two thread in the same process using File Interface. First thread will be driver and second will be application.I need to send IOCTL like commands using File interface ie is WriteFile(),ReadFile()
from Host process to driver through file-interface(which run's in driver context).Host process should not be blocked for the duration of the driver to process the command.
    >File-interface will run in driver context and it will be responsible to receive command from application and pass it to the driver.
    what are the complexity introduced?
    >Can anyone also give me the link/reference to get more information on this topic?
    >How to replace IOCTL command's for instance baud _rate change command with a file interface for example with IRP.

    Here  is the detailed query:
Hardware Abstraction Layer will interact with Driver(Both will be running in complete different process) .there is a IOCTL for command and  File interface for read and write.
    My requirement is:
Both should run in the same process so HAL will run as one thread and driver as another thread in the same process .I don't want HAL to wait for completion of request and also i don't want driver to be blocked .
We are planning to use a File Interface for communication between Hardware abstraction layer and Driver
HAL will send the command or read/write operation to a file interface and driver will get the command or read/write request from the File interface
There is a flexibility to change Hardware Abstraction layer and also the Driver
Is it possible to use IOCTL between two thread under same process? if not what other options do we have.
Can we use File interface to  send command (like IOCTL) between two thread?

  • QuickTimePro - Export vs Save - Different File sizes

    Hi,
with the trim to selection command I selected a bigger part of an AVI-video (Video track format: MPEG-4 DivX v.5 + Audio: Mpeg-1 layer 3 (mp3)).
Although I did not change the video or audio settings I got different file sizes:
The exported video has double the size than the saved file.
    Therfore my questions:
    What is the reason?
What should I prefer - export or save - trying to get smaller files with the same quality?
Thanks for a tip.Greetings from the heart of Germany

    HI mrfibuli
I think you are seeing a general housecleaning of things that
were formerly in your library. For example, lets say you took a
fairly large project. Perhaps 80 slides. Then you delete 60 slides.
This would leave many items in the library. They would be there,
but be unused. So you save as, and after a couple of times of doing
this, the unused objects are purged from the file. This is why you
are seeing a difference in size.
    Sincerely... Rick

  • Why does my MacBook Pro OS X show a different file size than previous models, of the same folder?

I'm copying a folder from the server to burn to disc from my MacBook Pro OS X 10.6.8, then tried to burn it to disc using Toast Titanium.
It gave an error saying it's too big: 4.7 GB, then when we checked from a previous model MacBook Pro OS X 10.5.8 and it was 4.3 GB.
    How is this possible?

Apple changed the way file sizes are reported between Leopard and Snow Leopard. Leopard saw 1024 bytes as a kilobyte, 1024 KB as a megabyte, and 1024 MB as a gigabyte: the traditional binary-numeral nomenclature used for decades in the computer industry. But consumers didn't understand that, and always wondered why a hard drive with, say, 250,000,000,000 bytes of storage space on it was reported to contain 232 GB instead of 250. So to cater to a dumbed-down public, in Snow Leopard and Lion, 1000 bytes is a KB, 1000 KB is a MB, and 1000 MB is a GB: decimal nomenclature. Consequently, SL and Lion report larger file sizes than older versions of OS X for the same files and folders.

  • Fat32 reports different file sizes???

I tried to copy files from one Firewire drive to another. The source files were on a drive formated fat32 for use on a windows boot camp disk. When I copied to the Mac OS Estended disk the file sizes were much different. What's up with this -- were the files copied correctly?
    Thanks for your help!!!

FAT32 uses a different block size than Mac OS. If you check the actual size of the file rather than the space occupied on the drive they should be the same. However, if you copy a Mac file to a DOS disk some of the Mac file may disappear into another file which is the resource fork. Now you cannot copy just the file back to the Mac, you must also include the resource fork or you won't have a complete file. This is because Mac files and DOS files are not "assembled" the same way.

  • Spooling of a query generates different file sizes for different databases

Please help me regarding a problem with spooling. I spooled a query output to a file from two different database. In both the databases the table structure is the same and the output produced only one row. But the file size is different for the databases. How can this problem occur? Is there any database parameter need to be checked? Both the databases are in same version 10.2.0.1.0.
before running the spool i did a
sql> set head off feedback off echo off verify off linesize 10000 pages 0 trims on colsep ' '
    on both the sessions.
In one database the filesize is *1463 bytes* and on the other the filesize is *4205 bytes*.
Please help me to find out these discrepancies.

    hi Mario,
I think you are not getting my point. Both the files contain the same output but their sizes are different. This is due to the no of blank spaces between columns. I wanted to clarify why there is a difference between two filesize when the query output is the same.

  • Different File Sizes. Huh?

So, before I forget: I'm using Acrobat Standard 9.3.3
I'm printing from Word 2007 into a PDF. The docx has 72 letter-sized pages w/ plenty of full-page jpegs and a variety of smaller graphics linked in (please: no "should have used InDesign" comments). The docx is approx 300 KB, all graphics together are approx. 80 MB. When printing the full doc, the resulting PDF is around 57 MB.
I have a 2nd very similar document w/ 59 pages that's also around 300 KB. The graphics for this one amount to approx. 70 MB. However, the resulting PDF is only about 12 MB--yet it looks just fine. Both print jobs have the exact same settings.
Trying to reduce the file size of the 57 MB file, I started messing around w/ the larger doc. I printed the first 10 pages which only have 2 full-page jpegs. The result is approx. 1.3 MB. I then printed only one of the full-page graphic pages out of Word and the outcome was a 3.9 MB (!!!!) PDF. How can a PDF with a single page be more than double the size of a PDF with 10 pages when one of those pages is exactely the same????
Either I don't understand or something's screwy here. I don't get it. Help would really be appreciated.
Here are my 2 test PDFs:
    http://zinfandelplymouth.com/zn1.pdf (1.3 MB--10 pages)
    http://zinfandelplymouth.com/zn2.pdf (3.9 MB--1 page)

    Thanks.
Where are you able to see the sizes of the embedded graphics?
Those 2 PDFs were created from the exact same docx by using the "Adobe PDF" print driver. One time I tell Word to print pages "1-10", the other time I just print page 10. Yet, the file size of the single-page PDF is much bigger than the file size of the 10-page PDF. Same document, same printer driver w/ same settings. Does not seem to make sense.

  • IPhoto duplicates/messed up import? Different file sizes?

After transferring photos from our old Mac to the iMac, there are now many duplicate photos that I'd like to clear out. (My partner did the transfer, so I can't tell you the specifics of what went wrong). There are numerous events titled Original and a second event of the same photos, although there may be more photos in the second event due to created duplicates that have been modified. Comparing the two events, the photo file sizes are smaller in the original set than in the second set. Why is that? For otherwise identical photos, which should I delete?
And is there any reason not to open iPhoto from the dock and delete duplicates?

(My partner did the transfer, so I can't tell you the specifics of what went wrong).
I can tell you what they did wrong - they Imported your old iPhoto library into the new one - NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - it does not work, created massive duplication and an unusable mess
You can use iPhoto and delete duplicates (do it in batches of 100 or less emptying the iPhoto trash and system trash every batch)
The better solution is to go back and do it correctly - If the old Mac is still available and working  trash the bad iPhoto library on the new system and Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • PDFs rendered on AIX and Linux different file sizes

    Hello,
If I render a PDF on AIX my file size is around 400K. If I render the the same PDF on Linux, the file size is around 1.2MB. I am using the same XDP and XML file. I am using LiveCycle Forms v7.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Greg

Just found out that the file size is larger on Linux when I apply usage rights with Reader Extensions.

  • Why do copied files show different file sizes than the original files?

When I copy files (to another drive, folder, etc.) some show the same file size as the original, but others don't.
I'm guessing this is not abnormal, but what causes it?
    Thanks.

    Hi dymar,
Copying to another Drive is understandable, they may have a differentnumber of Blocks allocated per file, for insnce a one Byte file might take up 512 bytes, 1024 Bytes, etc, but a Get info should show the actual size of the file within that/those blocks.
If copying to another Format, like MS-DOS, Forks may be lost also.
There are ways to actually Compare the files...

  • Why the different file sizes?

Can anyone tell me why some songs are in the 20-30MB range, and most are only 3 or 4MB range? And more importantly, is there any way to shrink down the big ones? They make the CDs I burn very short indeed.

The file size of your imported songs will depend on your import settings in iTunes. An individual file size of 20-30mb sounds like you are importing in WAV or Apple Lossless. mp3 or AAC will have the same file size when using the same bitrate. For example, the average 4 minute song imported in AAC @ 128 kbps will have a file size of 3-4mb.
