Same SSID, different vlans

I currently have a 4402 in place, with my main office building working fine.
We are looking at bringing in the wireless at 4 other sites, but we want to use the same SSID.
How would I go about assigning different vlans (networks) to the same SSID.

You can use the "AAA Override" feature on controller. You need to have different dynamic interfaces for different vlans configured on the controller. After sucessful authentication, radius server could pass the dynamic interface information to the controller and controller can put users to different vlans according to the feedback from radius server:

    I would like help from you, because I have a problem and I can not detect.
    I have six devices installed in the WAP model 4410N on two different floors, and a third on each floor.
    Both are with the same SSID, but when I'm walking him on a quest equipment that is in another floor, which causes the machine to drop the connection due to fluctuations and barriers such as walls, doors, windows, elevators, etc. .. .
    I wonder how to detect only the AP network of walking even with the same SSID.
    VLAN use one at each andaar.

    Hi Anderson,
    It sounds like you have 5 access point in standalone and 5 SSID broadcasting but you can't know the difference between which SSID is good depending where you are at.
    If you can use any of the AP as a repeater (you may repeat 2 additional ap), when the signal strength of the original connection is low enough, it should fall to the more powerful strength of the repeated SSID.
    Additionally, if you'd like to use more than 3 AP in a repeater group, you may want to look in to something like the AP541N. These devices support clustering, up to 10 units.

  • Same SSID different MAC address

    Ok... This is the best place for me to post this I think...
    I am sharing an internet connection and am relatively close to the router (linksys) but because of the materials my building is constructed with I get a **** poor connection. So, there is a closer range extender that I can connect to, the range extender is also a linksys range extender, and I have no problems when I connect to it. The only problem is actually getting connected to it in the first place. My computer will automatically connect to the router rather than the base station. They both have the same SSID, and obviously different MAC addresses. Is there a way to force my computer to only connect to the range extender and ignore the signal from the router?

    I have no problems with the range extender itself. It works great. The problem is that my airport card cannot tell the difference between the range extender and the router. Sometimes it will connect to the router, and sometimes to the range extender. I want to force it to connect to a specific MAC address rather than using only the SSID. Is there a way to do this?

  • Two SSIDs; different VLANs; second VLAN can't talk to Internet

    I've got an ASA 5505 firewall with internal interface 192.168.65.1 on port 1 and a WAP connected to port 5 with the address 10.10.1.1. The WAP has two SSIDs configured; one is on VLAN 1 and the other on VLAN 14. The firewall has port 5 configured as a trunk for VLAN 1,14 and the interface was configured a VLAN 14.
    If I connect to the WAP using the SSID on VLAN 1 I get an address of 192.168.x.x from our internal DHCP server and have full connectivity to the internal and external networks. If I connect to the SSID on VLAN 14 I get an address of 10.10.1.x from the firewall DHCP server but am unable to connect to anything.
    When connecting to the SSID on VLAN 14 I want to be able to access the external interface but not anything internally. I have configured a firewall access rule to allow 10.10.1.0/24 to outside and deny 10.10.1.0/24 to 192.168.0.0/16 but this hasn't worked.
    Any ideas?

    You need to configure an IP helper on the appropriate VLAN interface(s). Routers, by default, will not forward broadcast packets. Since DHCP client messages use the destination IP address of 255.255.255.255 (all Nets Broadcast), DHCP clients will not be able to send requests to a DHCP server on a different subnet unless the DHCP/BootP Relay Agent is configured on the router. The DHCP/BootP Relay Agent will forward DHCP requests on behalf of a DHCP client to the DHCP server. The DHCP/BootP Relay Agent will append its own IP address to the source IP address of the DHCP frames going to the DHCP server. This allows the DHCP server to respond via unicast to the DHCP/BootP Relay Agent. The DHCP/BootP Relay Agent will also populate the Gateway IP address field with the IP address of the interface on which the DHCP message is received from the client. The DHCP server uses the Gateway ip address field to determine the subnet from which the DHCPDISCOVER, DHCPREQUEST, or DHCPINFORM message originates.

  • Same SSID, different passwords

    Greetings all,
    My work takes me to several schools every week, each with the same SSID (let's call it "faculty"), but each with a different password. I have to enter all the settings manually everytime I walk into a new school, and I'd love for the macbook (and iPhone too) to just remember all the settings for each school. I'm only a teacher so I have no power to change SSIDs or passwords. Is there a way for ML to remember networks by the AP's MAC address (and not just the SSID), or some other method?

    I have 3 linksys routers and the iPad has been able to connect to them all. I settled on the Linksys WRT54GL because the others are old and starting to exhibit dropout problems.
    My suggestion would be to temporarily shorten your password to one or two digits and see if that helps. Before playing around with the Linksys I would suggest that beforehand you save your config file in case you need to restore the router.
    I am on G band only, channel 6. My wireless security is set to WPA Personal, TKIP+AES, and I have a 26 digit WPA shared key. BTW, the 26 digit key is a real pain in the butt, but perhaps provides additional security.
    Like nearly everyone else, I am occasionally experiencing short internet disconnects followed by an automatic reconnect. I'm hoping the next iPad upgrade will remedy this.

  • Same SSID, different Vendors

    Has anybody in this forum ever deployed a wireless network with the same SSID, but using 2 different vendors.
    We have a warehouse and office space separated with concrete wall.  In the warehouse, we have one vendor
    and in office, we have another vendor.  We want to use the same SSID in order to facilitate roaming.
    Is this feasible?

    It will not work well in some environments. Two separate systems, lightweight and autonomous does not communicate with each other to support roaming.
    If you have standalone access points using open or maybe preshared key, then it can work since each roam required a full reauth. As long as the users are in the same subnet, it can work. If your using 802.1x then the roam will be very slow due to full reauths.

  • Flex Connect Across Multiple VLANS same SSID

    I just need to find that if we have flex connect setup for differnet vlans using single controller, will roaming works when client connects to AP in a differnet VLAN but using same SSID.
    Example below:
    1) Client connects to AP on specific SSID mapped to VLAN 100, get an IP address ..all good at this point
    2) Client walks and connects to a differnet AP on same SSID but mapped to VLAN 200...at this point I observe client doesnt get a new IP address in fact it retain IP from step-1 and there is no connectivity
    3) Client walks back to first AP and connectivity is restored
    Why in step-2 client doesnt gets a new IP from VLAN 200 even when it shows connected to AP.

    Just to add to Rasika.... L3 isn't supported....I just ran into this a few days ago.... clients should request another dhcp when roaming to another FlexConnect AP that is mapped to a different VLAN.  The issue is, that some clients don't try to renew their dhcp address and gets stuck with the default 169.x.x.x.  I see this with Apple devices in general and what we are going to do is get rid of the multiple vlan setup (vlan per floor) and create a bigger vlan that the SSID will be mapped to.

  • Map 300 different VLANs to a SSID?

    Hi Everyone,
    I've just come across a situation where the customer requires to have their 300 different VLANs (they got 300 stores across AU) to be mapped to the same SSID. I know this is doable by creating an interface group on the WLC that contains all 300 VLAN interfaces, then map the interface group to the SSID. However, is there a better way to do it? I meant I don't think creating 300 interfaces on the WLC is a good idea from a managment point of view.

  • Howto block p2p traffic of clients connected to the same ssid on different wlc

    I use two wlc 4400 (4.2.x version) with a mobility domain and one ssid, both wlc are connected to a cisco l2 switch infrastructure. On the wlc I use the p2p blocking action 'drop' (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/5.2/configuration/guide/c52wlan.html#wp1209597) to isolate the clients from each other. Does anybody know if only unicast traffic is blocked or also multicast and broadcast traffic like arp requests?
    Concerning blocking p2p traffic of clients connected to the same ssid but different controllers I found the following statement in the LAP FAQs (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps430/products_qanda_item09186a00806a4da3.shtml):

    Does anybody know what's the best practise to prevent this inter wlc client traffic? I already read about using acls on the wlc dynamic interfaces, or private vlans on the l2 switch vlans where the dynamic interfaces are connected to. Is it allowed to completely isolate the wlc from each other on these dynamic interfaces with acls or private vlans or do the wlc need to see each other on this interfaces (e.g. heart beat)?

    To answer your original query :
    ACL is only solution to block client communication on same ssid between 2 wlcs. 5508 works better with ACLs then 44xx platform.
    ARP requests will be forwarded to upstream router just like any other traffic. WLC won't proxy arp for clients on same vlan.
    Gateway arp's I believe should be handled by WLC . ( Don't quote me on this but I am pretty sure it is ) ..If it was not, then how would client know about gw ?
    Multicast traffic is not applicable for p2p.
    Your ACL can be as simple as this for the scenario :
    WLC 1 - clientvlan = 10
    WLC 2 - clientvlan = 10
    and you want to restrict users from wlc1-wlc1, wlc1-wlc2, wlc2-wlc2 for same vlan10.
    Basically in that case the ACL should look like on both WLCs :
    1. Permit statement to talk to gateway.
    2. Deny to subnet.
    3. Permit all.
    4. If DHCP/DNS other services are on same subnet then you would need to add a permit
    statement before the deny.
    5. Attach the ACL to SSID or dymanic interface.

    My office room is near different APs with the same SSID, my Snow Leopard selects automatically to join the AP with stronger signal.
    But this AP isn't running well, so I want to force my mac to join a AP with weaker signal.
    (I've the same troubel as described in https://discussions.apple.com/message/6470508#6470508)
    Note that I'm a guest user and I hanen't access to APs, so I cannot change their SSID.
    Any idea how to force Mac to join a specific AP?

  • The same SSID used at 3 sites and the same vlan for client IP assignment?

    we are deploying 5508 controller and LW APs for wireless IP phone 7925G
    Controller is installed at site A and there are APs and wireless phones at site B and C as well.
    1. can I use the same SSID for all three sites for wireless phones? or have to use 3 distinct SSIDs?
    2. If I can use the same SSID, can I associate one subnet e.g 10.10.131.0/24 for wireless IP phones at 3 sites? (our Cisco UCM is fine with this)
    3. if I have use 3 distinct SSIDs, do I have to assign three subnets for IP phones at three sites?

    That is, by default the WLAN will get pushed to all APs.. so if you have a single wlan then this will broadcast the SSID and the remotre site clients will connect to it..

  • I want to use the same SSID in two sites (central y remote)

    I have several AP in H-REAP mode, one of them is in a remote location anthe other are in the central location. I want to use the same SSID in both locations with differents VLANS.
    In the central site, i have 3 WLANS (SSID) whit 3 different VLAN  eachother. I put the local swicthing in one SSID that I want to use in the remote site. In the remote location the users can authenticate and everything works fine but in the central location that SSID doesnt work, the user in the central location can not authenticate.
    It seems that i can not use the same WLAN (SSID) and use it en both locations checking the local switching.
    What can i do?

    Look I have 2 two VLANs Interfaces (vlan 252 & Vlan253) created on WLC, beside the management VLAN (ID 254), and there are 8 AP´s installed at the central location, each AP has been connected to my CORE Switch through switch ports mode Access vlan 254.
    th aeuthentitcation i have been used is "LOCAL: WPA-WPA2-PSK" in both locations (Central and remote). In the remote sites, tha AP is connected to a cisco switch through switch port mode trunk, and I use VLAN 251. When the local switching  feature is activeted on WLC, I can map the VLAN 251 (in te remote site) to the SSID I am using inthe central site and everything works fine but in the central locations the user can associste to he AP but they can not receive IP from the appropiate VLAN.
    I don t know what parameter have to change....

    I can to have two SSIDs for all branch of my country, but each ones in a differents subnets,for example:
    Area 1
    SSID 1 : guest -> 192.168.1.1
    SSID 2 : office -> 192.168.2.1
    Area 2

    SSID 2 : office -> 192.168.4.1
    I have configured AP-Group, and this works succesfull but only with one SSID, I need two SSID, each one associated a multiples vlans, when the user are connect to SSID guest they receive the correct ip from the subnet corresponding,(Area1 ip address of host is 192.168.1.X and the Area 2 the usuer receibe the address 192.168.3.X both using the same SSID "guest"), How I can reach this requerimients using two SSID?. Using Ap-Group or there is other methods.

  • Multiple Cisco Aironet 1131AG access points and same SSID?

    We have multiple Cisco Aironet 1131AG devices, all wired on one Cisco L2 switch(2560)  who is connected to L3 switch (3550). We assigned one VLAN for access point in L3 switch who acts as vtp server (L2 switch is vtp client). All ap's will have static ip address and all will have same SSID and no security and they will be using multiple channels (ex. 1,6,11).  They will operate in 3 floor building for roaming wireless client. We won't using any wireless controller.
    So my question is this: How to configure APs-all the same with different ip's, can we use L3 switch to create dhcp server for access points VLAN (pool for clients, and the rest for static ip for ap's)? Can one of the ap's be WDS and in the same time local radius server with users without Cisco Secure ACS or similar controller or I didn't understand this quite well :-).     Well, just so you know, WDS and local RADIUS authentication is only needed if you're using authentication on your wireless connection.  You say you're not planning to use security, so this isn't necessary.  However, I'd highly recommend at least using a simple WPA2-PSK to lock down your connection, otherwise you might end up giving free Internet access at best, and at worst you might be giving access to company PCs and servers.  If you want to further use an 802.1x or WPA authentication method, then yes, you can use an AP as a RADIUS server and WDS to improve authenticated roaming, but this is far more limited than using a Cisco ACS.
    As for your other questions, yes, your APs can all be configured the same except for at least three parameters: IP address, channel, and hostname.  Configure your static IP addresses on the AP's BVI1 interface.  Don't place it on the Radio or Ethernet interfaces, because if either of these interfaces goes down you'll lose the ability to configure the AP, so it's best to use the BVI1 interface.
    And yes, configuring a DHCP scope for your clients on your L3 switch is a good design, or you could also use your DHCP server on a different subnet by using the ip helper-address command on the L3 interface.  I hope this helps!  Let me know if you need help configuring any of this.

  • Setting up Multiple SSID's & VLAN

    I have a Cisco 1230 AP along with a Sonic Wall TZ 210 and a Linksys SFE 2010P switch. On my AP I have created 2 SSID's. and 2 VLAN's. The first SSID is being broadcasted and has WPA encryption on it for our Corporate USers. The Second SSID is a Guest SSID and too is being broadcasted. I can make a laptop connect to the 1st SSID, but for some reason the 2nd SSID nothing will connect to it.  The first SSID is associated to VLAN1 and the 2nd SSID is associated to VLAN2. VLAN1 has WPA encryption on it. VLAN2 is setup as Open and no Encryption. Any ideas?
    My next question is how to I configure traffic on this AP with the other equipment mentioned? On my sonicwall we have segmented port6 on it to be a different subnet from the corporate subnet. On the Linksys switch I have enable VLANS on port2 and port48 which are on VLAN2. All other ports are on VLAN1. The AP connects to Ports 2 on the linksys switch and port 48 connects to port 6 on the Sonic Wall. When a corporate user connects to SSID1 I want them to be able to connect to the Corporate subnet. When a guest connects to SSID2 I want them to connect to the segmented guest network to only have Internet Access.
    Hope this makes sense!

    if you remove "encryption mode ciphers aes-ccm tkip" from the radio interface does it help?
    it should remain like this:
