Sample Basic Database

Hello everybody,
I am new to Essbase and learning to use it for financial analysis. I need to retrieve data from the sample basic database, but when i do so, it shows missing values. Any idea as to what can be done in this case.....please help ! I tried supressing the missing values and now it shows errors. :-((

You have to go into EAS and load data for the database. The filename to load for Sample Basic is 'calcdata.txt' and you do not need a load rule for this file. I always do a calc on the database after the load is complete; in this case, the calc may be optional as I think the calc'ed values may already be in the load file..

Simple Qustion: No data shown in the retrieval of Sample.Basic database

I'm a very beginner to Essbase, I'm getting started with essbase add-in tutorial, when I retrieve the data from Sample.Basic, it only returned the dimension names, there is no data in the intersections, it show #Missing in the cells, the tutorial shows there are data in the sample.basic database, why am I not able to get it displayed?, thank you so much
the following is how it displayed after I retrieved the sample.basic:

Maybe I did not configure the option items correctly?

Just a comment about my nemesis' note:
You need to load data and potentially calculate it (I know Cameron you don't but it does not hurt).^^^The reason you don't need to calculate the data is because CALCDAT.txt already contains the consolidated results. Glenn is correct in saying that calculation doesn't hurt, but there's really no point.
FWIW, the reason there's no point is because CALCDAT.txt is a full export of Sample.Basic, that is, every valued data point is contained within the data file. Thus, when calculation occurs it just overwrites the data values that were already loaded.
As we are talking about a second or so to do the calculation, this matters not a whit, but I thought it might be instructive when you finally get to a real database. Full exports, when loaded back into an empty Essbase database, do not need to be recalculated.

Retrieving sample basic using Excel add in

Hi I am having problems accessing the sample basic database using excel, I see the sample basic in Application/Database and I get an error which states that "Unable to load database[Basic]". I get this error for all the the sample databases. The system administrator said the databases were installed with the essbase, but I still can't retrieve them. Anyone has any suggestions as to why this may be occurring.Thanks,

It's not a problem with the Add-In.The database was not Installed correctly. You need to rebuild the Sample Basic application. Can you check to see if all the DB files were installed.Look in the C:\essbase\app\Sample\Basic directory you should see these files, or atleast the outline.Basic.otlBasic.indBasic.esmBasic.tctEss000001.INDEss000001.PAGDo you know how to do this? As an enhancement to the cube you could add a new dimension (call it "View"). Make it Dense with one stored member called input. Then add a dynamic calc member called "Round" and set the formula to round the values stored in the input member. This will let your users and/or source systems continue to load as usual (load to "Input" member), and for reporting you will have the rounded numbers. Since it's dynamic calc, there is no need for an additional consolidation, it will run on the fly. Lastly, since you made it a dense dimension with only one stored member, you do not increase your block size and your overall performance should not be impacted by the change.

Error loading Sample Basic in Essbase

Hi,
Has anyone had this issue? I tried to load the data for Sample Basic DB in Essbase in a Windows Vista 32 pc and got this error msg:
Database Basic loaded
Database East loaded
Database Xchgrate loaded
Database Interntl loaded
Unable to Connect to Database [East]
What does the last line mean and how do I fix it? I didn't encounter this when I was running it on a different machine (XP). All I've done was run the Calcdat.txt file after choosing load data for Sample db on server. Thx.

First of all Vista/XP both are not supported OS for Essbase server; though XP may work fine but for better results we stick with only Win 2000/Win 2003.
Else you can continue with XP and if you have same issue with XP then please post it we will together solve it.

How to recreate sample basic

Hi
We deleted sample basic after we installed Essbase (11.1.1.3). Now some users want to have sample basic available to practice. Do anyone know how to recreate sample basic in Essbase?

opening the zip file it looks like all of the files are there. So from EAS create the Sample application (BSO non unicode) and then create the database Basic. Stop the application then copy all of the files in the zip into the basic directory on the server (pathing may vary based on what version you are using) but there should be an app\sample\basic directory. Then start the app and you should be good to go

I have to demonstarte a sample bank database in oracle. I remember that few years before (About 2) when i activley using oracle there was a sample datbase on the banking system on some oracle documentation (i found that on the oracle.com some where). I was trying to find that again today but i could not find . If any body knows about that, i will appreciate. Note it was quite simple and deomnstarted just basic sql and pl/sql. Thanks if anybody knows that url, i will appreciate that.

Basic database using Access

Hi
I'm building a very basic database in Dreamweaver using .asp
and (you may ask why) Microsoft Access. The problem is Access is
creating an .LDB file and totally messing things up. As soon as I
test the custom string it creates the file and then leaves it open
so I get an error saying that the file cannot be used as it is
already open. Does anyone know either how to stop Access doing this
or how to get around this in Dreamweaver?

Basic database question, and subscribe/unsubscribe code

Hi there
Although I've created and manage a website, and about a million years ago I worked with databases, I'm still a bit green and in need of some help ...
I have the website based on my local machine (laptop). I want to use a subscribe/unsubscribe for a newsletter via the website.
Before I go ahead with this, I need to clarify a very basic database issue ... would I have to always leave my laptop running in order for people to be able to subscribe to the newsletter on the website, i.e. will it still connect to the database if the laptop is not running?
I'm using Dreamweaver 3, so I hope I can use this version to connect with a database? I did install Dreamweaver 4 on one occasion with the intent of upgrading the website to it, but because I'm still a bit unsure of myself and was unfamiliar with the changes the newer version created, I decided to leave it on Dreamweaver 3 rather than risk stuffing the website up completely!
I also have Dreamweaver UltraDev but for some reason it won't install.
I'm hoping to follow instructions given on Dreamweaver Developer Centre for setting up a PHP development environment (http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/setting_up_php.html).
If anyone would be so kind as to advise whether I'm on the right track with all this, using Dreamweaver 3, that'd be great!
Also, I'm sure this is unlikely, but is there any way to include a subscribe-unsubscribe without having to actually use a database?

I need sample basic data file containing Product,Market,Measures etc to load data in to Sample Basic applications. Where can I get this?

As I am the World Domain Lead for Sample.Basic (this is a joke, btw, it's sort of like being King of my front stoop, and besides, I just made it up) I will note two things about CALCDAT.TXT.
1) It is not in columnar format, but instead in Essbase free-form data load format as user2571802 notes. This means if you take a look at it with a text editor, it's a bit confusing to read till you realize that it contains all dimensional information in the data file itself. See the DBAG's section on [Data Sources That Do Not Need A Rules File|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10530_01/doc/epm.931/html_esb_dbag/ddlintro.htm#ddlintro1029529].
2) CALCDAT.TXT contains level 0 and calculated results. Just load it -- there's no need to calculate it.

Sample.basic on laptop?

I am new to essbase and every book I have on the subject references sample.basic. Is it advisable to install this on my laptop, or would it be too burdensome?

It might be that your laptop is not high enough spec or is not running a supported OS, anyway if you want to install Essbase and have no experience in installing EPM products then it might be worth checking out the rapid deployment guide - Rapid Deployment

Basic Database

I am new to cold fusion and have been practicing with some
basic SQL on a database. I have it working locally but when I run
it on my web host it doesn't work. They are telling me the issues
are coding issues (probablly right) but I cant find them. I am
calling procedures with a <cfinvoke> tag to a cfc file for
the basic Insert, Delete and Update SQL statements and update works
delete generates no error but does nothing to the table and Insert
generates an error. The parameters are being passed correctly from
the originating web page but the code doesn't work. The Web host I
use requires an IN clause you see in the code to pass through for
Cold Fusion code to work properly and I think that is giving me
problems. I would appreciate any help for a newbie to cold fusion.

Yeah the code and database are from Ben Forta I am trying to
get it working remote. I am a Visual Basic programmer and just
trying to learn Cold Fusion. I know SQL pretty well and that IN
clause is not used exactly the way it would be in a SQL statement
because it is what my web host forces me to use to connect to the
database. If you look at any of the select statements the IN clause
is not being used properly but the statements work. To be honest I
don't think I ever used an IN clause on a Delete or Update
statement can't think of when there would be a need to unless there
was a Union. If you could copy the delete statement and fix it to
what you think would work I will try it out and it would be much
appreciated.
By the way I tried the code in the WHERE section of the
DELETE as:
WHERE (FilmID = #ARGUMENTS.FilmID#)
IN
('//frigga/home/users/web/b1267/waytechnologies/data/ows.mdb')
which would look more like how you would use a IN clause with
a SQL statment but I still get no error but no delete.

If you Google "database design document" you'll see that there are many templates available. I've never used any such document, and I think you'll be hard pressed to find one that fits your business needs exactly (assuming there are business needs behind your request).

2. Database Sizing/ estimate.I would suggest you analyze existing workloads and base your estimates on that. If there is no existing workload you'll have to estimate one based on how many users you estimate will use the solution, or some other clever estimation method.
3. Schema Design This is a matter of translating business/application requirements to what needs to be stored in the relational database, and creating a data model based upon that. Every model will be different.
4. Data transformations/ feedsYou could simply document each transformation/feed and purpose.
