Sample & bit rate

I have a two part question:
1) I have a Presonus Firebox that allows me to record up to 24 bit/96k. I am wonder if I should take advantage of this and use those settings in audio midi setup for when I record into GrarageBand? Is it worth the extra file size? Is there a noticeable quality gain? Will 96k work with GB?
2) I know GB is only 16 bit and that CD's that it will be mixed to are at 16 bit/44.1 kHz. But what about if I record a song in GB at 24 bit/96k, mix down to iTunes, and put it on my ipod as an AIFF will the increased quality show up there? What about on an Audio DVD made from itunes with iDVD.

Not that it's relevant in the context of GarageBand, but it might be useful to clarify the effect of sample rate and bit depth.
The sample rate affects the frequency response. it is mathematically impossible for a sampling system to correctly render any frequency at or above half the sampling rate (trying to do so produces false frequencies - 'birdies ' - known as aliasing). 44.1kHz effectively limits your frequency response to about 21 kHz, 48kHz to about 23 kHz, and so on.
The bit depth affects the noise floor: 16-bit gives a theoretical noise floor of about -90dB below peak: 24-bit gives a theoretical noise floor of about -138dB below peak. -90 is pretty well inaudible: but remember that when adding tracks together the noise, being random, is added (3dB per track if they are the same level when mixed - of course the peak level increases too). The digital noise, if it becomes audible, is far more annoying in its sound than good old-fashioned tape hiss.
In practice, GB's restriction to 44.1/16-bit isn't really that much of a problem: of course 96/24 would be better, but you gets what you paid for!
Incidentally, don't confuse bit depth with bit-rate, which is a combination of the sampling rate and the bit depth, and is fixed for uncompressed files: but of course as you compress files with MP3 or similar you reduce the bit-rate by leaving out information, even though the sampling rate is the same.

    The sample rate is fixed at 44.1kHz. The bit depth (audio resolution) is selectable at either 16 bits or 24 bits.

  • Optimal Audio Sample/ Bit Rate for DVD?

    In using recorded material to add to DVDs for family and friends, that is, non-commercial, what is recommended formatting for the audio file? Soundbooth seems to default to 48000 Sample Rate/32 Bit but if I use that am I achieving anything over a simple 44100 Sample Rate/16 bit, since the human ear cannot detect above 20000Hz? I want the DVDs to sound as good as possible in STEREO.I don't want to cross-post, so sorry if this is wrong forum.

    I'm not positive about this, but I think they used 48KHz simply because most professional audio/video gear uses that same sample rate. This makes it easier to tramsfer audio from DV, DAT, etc. without the need for resampling.
    As for why 48 in the first place? This has to do with the Nyquist limit... and that's way too deep for this thread!
    Higher bit depth is another thing all together: This represents the number of possible volume levels (dynamic range) of each sample. 16 bit has 65535 levels which is a dynamic range of 96 dB. This is fine for final delivery -- assuming that the audio was well-mastered at an appropriate volume level.
    During recording and editing, however, where it is likely that adjustments to dynamics (compression, expansion, noise gating, fading) and effects will be applied, it is best to use a higher bit depth so that less information is lost (quantized) on successive transformations of the audio. It also will keep broadband noise from creeping in when the audio is amplified.
    For example, if you have audio recorded in 16 bit and then you amplify it to be 20 dB louder, your dynamic range has decreased to 76 dB and the noise floor has been raised -- meaning there is a constant whitenoise "hiss" in the background.
    32 bit audio is different. The dynamic range is sufficient enough so that moderately large amplification will not neccessarily result in audible background noise.
    The 32 bit audio is then downsampled during mastering to 16 bit for final delivery (often with aid dithering, noise shaping, etc. to avoid distortion and give the "illusion" of greater dynamic range)
    I do agree that 48 KHz is a little bit silly for DVD when the audio is AC3 compressed anyway. I am fairly certain that none of these ultrasonic frequencies will survive AC3 encoding -- even at high rates.

    I have some files I am working with. Details and what happened:
    Had some music files where I was doing some trimming/splitting. Files worked fine in itunes.
    Open the files in Quicktime Pro 7 to trim them. Exported to aif.
    Opened the files with itunes. They open and play just fine.
    In Itunes I click"create AAC version" to convert them.
    I receive the message "An error occurred while trying to import the file. The current encoder settings for bit rate and sample rate are not valid for this file."
    I don't know what to do from here. Suggestions?

    Make sure that the AIFFs that you export are set for 16 bit PCM.
    Also, assuming that you are using 44.1 kHZ sampling in your AIFFs, make sure that you are not trying to use 48 kHz in the AAC.

    Tony, Make sure you are in Songs view.  Then View > Show View Options, and check the boxes for "Bit Rate" and "Sample Rate."  See picture:

    I just upgraded to 12.0.1 running on an old dual quad core running OS10.7.5
    I used to be able to customize the ID3 tag fields when displaying my music library.
    One important aspect was to view the file type, bit rate, and sample rate as I'm a band/audio producer.
    I can now only view those things when I "get info" on each song.  This is really painful as I'd like to see a list of all my songs and be able to easily see those 3 fields and sort by them.
    Is there a way or did Apple remove this ability therefore making my experience of using iTunes be pretty much ruined?

    The ability is still there, but it is enabled differently.
    In Songs view, click the drop-down at the upper right  Then click the next drop-down called "Show Columns," as shown below.  There, you can pick the columns you want to display, including sample rate, etc.

  • Burn voice mp3 play list to audio CD. convert bit rate or sample rate.

    I have several audio files (voice), 30 in all, that I wish to play in a car CD player.
    The car player cannot play mp3. Using iTunes I tried buring a play list of mp3 files to an Audio CD.
    I get an alert from iTunes that I may require multiple CD's. Each mp3 file is around 90megs in size or about an hours worth of audio (voice).
    The audio files are voice no music. But they are at 192 kbps bit rate and 44 khz sample rate.
    Is there a way of converting them to squeeze more files onto a CD? Changing bit rate or sample rate?
    Can itunes do that? Or is there a utility that can do that?

  • How to resolve audio sampling and bit rate differences before sound mix

    I'm editing a project where an additional recorder (Zoom H4n) was used and synched to the camcorder track with Plural Eyes.  Some of the sampling and bit rates don't match within the Plural Eyes synchronized clips and I need to send this out for a sound mix.  Could I use Compressor to transcode the audio? Would I have to go back to my original separate tracks, transcode in Compressor and then re-synch using Plural Eyes?  Next time ProRes from the beginning -
    but if there's an easier fix for my current problem it would be much appreciated.

    I started this project  as a newby back in 2010 and was a bit overwhelmed (i.e. just happy to get everything into FCP and be able to edit.)
    I'll try the media manage solution, but if that doesn't work I think I'll live with the one-frame drift.  I'm assuming
    the only other alternative would be to go back to all the original video and audio files; transcode using Compressor, and then re-synch with Plural Eyes and go back in to match up the edits?

    I've always burned my purchased CDs into iTunes using a AAC 320 kbps and 48.000kHz. Now when I select that option in iTunes 9 I'm getting a "The selected combination of bit rate and sample rate is not allowed." pop up screen. So is it impossible to burn my albums in a 320kbps/48.000 AAC format?. I had no problems in previous versions of iTunes using this setting. I guess I might have to switch over using a MP3 import setting instead.

    Audio CDs are encoded with a sample rate of 44.1 kHz. Ripping them at 48 kHz requires resampling and does not improve the quality. Unless you have a special need for 48, use 44.1.

  • PROBLEM with 24/96 bit-rate USB DAC that worked fine until I plugged in two

    I'm using a late 2008 15" Macbook Pro that I bought Jan 2009 right before the SD card models came out. Mac OSX 10.6.4 and iTunes 9.2 are installed. I have a Nuforce Icon HDP and a CEntrance DACport 24/96 bit-rate USB DAC (external sound cards) that still work great right now. Note - 16 bit/44 Khz is CD quality, and these 24/96 files are hi-resolution downloads that are closer to SACD or DVD audio.
    I have been evaluating a new third 24/96 USB DAC plugged directly into the Macbook USB port (no hub) which has been working fine for over 2 weeks with 24/96 bit-rate lossless music files in iTunes. Audio Midi Setup is set for 24/96 to match the music file's resolution. After making suggestions to the manufacturer they made some improvements and sent me a new version to listen for the differences.
    I listened to the new one for a day and it worked fine, but when I plugged in the original test sample into the second USB port at the same time as the new one in order to compare them, the sound became garbled and noisy. This never happened when either one was plugged in by itself. Note, if I make changes to the DAC's bit-rate in Audio Midi Setup I usually close iTunes first and then re-open it when I am done.
    Upon hearing this new problem I unplugged both of the new USB DACs and plugged just one of them back in, but now it causes iTunes music playback to pause when one is plugged in and set for 24/96 in audio midi setup. Prior to plugging in both at the same time, either one worked just fine by itself. There is no reason when unplugging one or the other that they shouldn't start working again. But now I can't play any 24/96 music through either one anymore. In quicktime player the songs don't pause like with iTunes, but there is no sound coming through even with just one DAC plugged in at a time. Then I discovered that if I go into Audio Midi Setup application and lower the bit rate to 24/48 then iTunes will resume playing again and I can hear the music fine with iTunes or Quicktime player.
    Basically, my Macbook Pro has now lost the ability to play 24/96 bit rate with either of these new USB DACs, when they both worked fine before I plugged them in at the same time. More confusing is that they use the same USB receiver chip as in one of the DACs that I mentioned above in the first paragraph, and both the HDP and DACport still work fine at 24/96 bit-rate. It's only these two new USB DAC that require me to lower the bit rate in Audio Midi Setup to 24/48 in order to listen through them, and this wasn't a problem as recently as yesterday!
    The computer is acting like some setting needs to be wiped out - it's DEFINITELY NOT the USB DAC's that are faulty because they still both work fine at 24/96 on my wife's iMac (I'm afraid to try plugging in both at the same time to the iMac in case I screw that Mac up too).
    I have reset the PRAM a few times, and this doesn't fix the problem. I thought maybe the com.apple.audiomidisetup.plist file could be corrupted and deleted it, but that didn't help. I don't know what to try next to get the Macbook to start fresh when trying to use these devices, short of having to re-install OSX.
    Please, does anyone have a suggestion of how I can make the Macbook forget it ever saw these two USB DACs, and let me start fresh so they start working normally again? I do dozens of reviews for Head-fi.org and I can't afford to have my Macbook Pro compromised like this, which could prevent me from doing some reviews or evaluating new products.

    UPDATE:
    As noted in the first post, both of these newer USB DAC work fine at 24/96 on my wife's iMac, so it's clear that they didn't both become defective when I connected them to the Macbook Pro at the same time.
    Resetting the Macbook Pro PRAM didn't help, so I removed the hard shell laptop case to get to the battery and remove it, then reset the SMC. After that I could use the original DAC at 24/96 again, but only IF it was plugged into the rear USB port. If I plugged it into the front USB port then the sound was garbled and filled with noise. This was a vast improvement over no sound at all.
    Then I switched to the replacement/updated DAC, but I got no sound at all from either USB port at any bit-rate. And returning to the original DAC again now results in no sound again.
    Sigh... I will reset the PRAM and SMC again, and see how far I can get with this. I'd still love some help. Thanks!

  • ITunes & Constant Bit Rate

    Hi. Okay this is my first time posting here. Up till now I've been decently satisfied with my iPhone. However right now I'm trying to import some songs from a CD that I own onto my computer and into my iTunes Library.
    Okay so I watched the tutorial video. I did a little research online and I found the way to change the import settings.
    I want a HIGH QUALITY music file in the .aac format at a CONSTANT BIT RATE.
    Following me so far? With that in mind when it came to the 1st screen I selected "Custom" and I choose
    Stereo Bit Rate: 320
    Sample Rate: 44.100 kHz
    Channels: Auto
    Within this window the option "Use Variable Bit Rate" was SELECTED.
    I unchecked/deselected it because I want a CBR (Constant Bit Rate).
    And then I hit "Okay" thinking that I had done everything correct and perfectly.
    Then I was back at the Main Pain. I hit Import CD hoping it would use the custom settings. However when I went to the folder to my shock and surprise it was giving me music files with a varying bit rate.
    Some files were 325. Others were 321 and a few 319. This is NOT what I wanted and not what I expected from iTunes. I tell it to not use VBR it should be doing CBR right?
    So that's why I'm hear. What do I need to do to get this to WORK the way I want it to? Or should I just give up and use another program like Windows Media Player to rip my songs into .mp3? I'd rather use .aac since I hear it's better quality and it's the evolution of mp3.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated....

    It's still NOT working.
    I've done exactly the way you suggested. I've also tried it with "use error correction" and it still doesn't give me what I want.
    The only thing that sorta produces what I want is when I put it to mono and start the importing process the files all come out at the same bitrate.
    However the highest bitrate I can get with that is 160. And that's not what I want.
    I'm about to just give up. On top of iTunes being ridiculous slow on all Windows computers I now find that importing songs is a complete hassle.

  • Higher Bit Rate for h.264

    The people at FiOS say my h.264 QT file needs to be 6 MB Bit Rate, but I can't seem to get higher than 3 MB. They have to sample it up which makes my graphics slightly soft.
    Can I get a higher rate using Compressor and h.264? I'm past deadline and don't have time to try other formats today, but will listen. Thanks.

    Increasing the bitrate alone should not have any effect on the image (i.e., a sharp image is not going to become soft because of an increase in bitrate. Decrease yes, increase no.)
    It seems that there is something else going on. Most likely it is the resolution. If the resolution you are using is lower then what they need, then they are scaling up the image which causes the graphics to become soft.
    The bad news is that there is no way to "fix" this. You will need to start all over again at the proper resolution.

  • Optical audio out bit rate

    I downloaded some 96khz/24bit flac files and tried to play them on my MacBook of late 2007. First, I used Songbird to play the files and hook up my Cambridge Audio DacMagic via USB but observed that the output was only at 44.1khz, I.e. just CD quality. Then I read that that's the limitation of USB audio and so I bought a toslink cable to feed the DAC via optical out. Well, it was still only 44.1khz. Wondering if Songbird changed the bit rate, I tried converting the flac file to apple lossless with XLD and then importing into iTunes. iTunes clearly show the files being 27xxkbps and yet my DAC still indicate it is receiving only 44.1khz sample rate. Is this the limit of the MacBook sound card? I could not find this answer from anywhere on apple's website.
    When I use AirPlay to stream the file via apple tv and feed apple tv's optical out to my DAC, it showed 48khz. A little better. But I'm really after the full bit rate of 96khz for optimum audio quality.

    Im wondering, if i have a file of x format, with 50Mb video bitrate, and I convert it using compresor 4 to ProRess 422, the result will give me a video with .mov extentin with video bitrate around 120 Mb, if I convert it to Proress (LT) it will give a result of around 70Mb video bit rate.
    Will the new outputs have true clean bit rate, I mean the margine btwn 50Mb and 120 or 70, will it be showed , so will the new video show a better result, or it will just show same result at 50Mb. 2nd, in case I reconvert from Proress 422 (LT) (70 Mb) to anyformat (not necessarly using cpmpressor 4) to any format havn video bit rate again 50 Mb, will the output be the same of the original 50Mb that had the x

    If you are concerned about this issue, do your own tests.
    Make a copy of a representative sample of your original material in ProResHQ, one in ProRes422 and one in ProResLT
    Put your original in a ProRes4444 timeline in V1 and one of the copies in V2. Apply the difference matte.
    Do you see anything? Do the same process for all three variants of ProRes.
    Now, convert the material to your delivery format and put it back in the ProRes4444 timeline on V1 and one of the ProRes copies on V2 and apply a difference matte. Again, what do you see?
    If you see a solid screen of black, there is no measurable difference between the files.
    If you do see artifacts, do an A/B comparison on a good grading monitor - sometimes stuff that shows up in the difference matte can not be seen by the eye even in dedicated A/B testing.

    fwiw - all ProRes varients are 10 bit codecs. They are designed to absorb a great deal of editing/compositing without degrading. This is why you want to get any material that was acquired in a long GOP, compressed format OUT of that format as soon as possible if you will be grading, compositing or doing any work beyond simple cuts.
