Sample /etc/sysctl.conf.default for Mac OS X 10.8.4 Server?

Hello:
I foolishly modified the /etc/sysctl.conf file on my Macmini server running 10.8.4 server and now things do not work as expected:
* most programs fail to launch (Firefox, Git, Safari)
* the system takes a long time to boot
* there is no network connectivity
* the Server app (and services) fail to launch
I'll greatly appreciate if somebody could post or point me to a stock or default "/etc/sysctl.conf" file.
I did try deleting the /etc/sysctl.conf file altogether, but it did not solve my problem.
Thanks.

It's interesting and worrisome that both of these answers conflict with the instructions at the Postgres web site, and in other posts about installing Postgres on Mountain Lion.  According to those resources, there is no such file by default, but creating it (and rebooting) is the way to change these settings.
This thread is about Postgres on OS X Server, which is installed by default. You shouldn't have to do anything else to set it up. If you are installing Postgres on OS X Client, then you may have some work to do. I tried Postgres a couple of years ago. It was pretty clunky. I assume Apple does a better job of configuring Postgres than Postgres. I suggest installing OS X Server if you want to run Postgres and MySQL is not suitable for some reason.

  • Settings in /etc/sysctl.conf overwritten [SOLVED]

    I added a new line to /etc/sysctl.conf setting the vm.dirty_ratio to 3 (line is simply `vm.dirty_ratio = 3`).  I can invoke it by running `sysctl -p` so I know the syntax is correct.  This setting is however not loaded upon a reboot.  The systemd-sysctl.service is however kicked off just  fine and completes without errors.  I have also tried removing the line from /etc/sysctl.conf and placing it in /etc/sysctl.d/dirty.conf but again, it is not honored at boot.  What am I doing wrong?
    EDIT: The solution is in post #31 - acknowledgement to chp for pointing me to it.  Note that I also changed to topic to a more relevant one.

    Guess I'm stumped.  I just spun up an Arch VM, pasted in the /etc/sysctl.conf below and reboot it.  All the settings in the file in the VM are applied.  If Leonid's guess that something is overriding these values on my workstation, I would like to figure out what it is and shut it down.  To keep things simple, I booted into the stock ARCH kernel; here are the services I have active:

  • /etc/sysctl.conf not taking effect

    Hi, i created /etc/sysctl.conf which is not applied at startup. Is anyone able to tell me where i've gone wrong?
    ls -al /etc/sysctl.conf
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 121 Oct 13 10:05 /etc/sysctl.conf
    cat /etc/sysctl.conf
    net.inet.tcp.sendspace: 65536
    net.inet.tcp.recvspace: 65536
    After starting up i check with this command:
    sysctl net.inet.tcp
    And the results are:
    net.inet.tcp.sendspace: 32768
    net.inet.tcp.recvspace: 32768
    ....

    Your syntax is wrong. Use net.inet.tcp.sendspace=65536

  • Error in Doc B15661-01: /etc/sysctl.conf rmem & wmem

    Editing the file /etc/sysctl.conf
    there is an error/typo in the kernel parameters, on Suse 9
    the entries should be like this:
    net.core.rmem_default = 262144
    net.core.rmem_max = 262144
    net.core.wmem_default = 262144
    net.core.wmem_max = 262144
    This should make the changes permanent.

    Thank you. Your feedback has been forwarded to the doc writer.
    Regards,
    Chao

  • Default Arch /etc/sysctl.conf

    I looked in this file and found some interesting things that Arch devs appear to have made default, and I'd like to know why this is?
    # Disable packet forwarding
    net.ipv4.ip_forward = 0
    # Disable the magic-sysrq key (console security issues)
    kernel.sysrq = 0
    # Enable TCP SYN Cookie Protection
    net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies = 1
    All three of these I'd like to hear the background on.
    The SYSRQ key is disabled here?  Wow, no wonder I've been having trouble getting it to work
    Seriously though, security issues?  Are we talking about these concerns?  Do Arch devs not agree with the counter-point there?
    Disable TCP SYN cookie protection -- isn't that a good thing?  Does it slow some stuff down, then?
    And then disabling packet forwarding...  doesn't really hurt anyone who want that, and therefore would be able to figure out how to turn it on, but official word would be nice.

    sysctl is a part of (UNIX) kernel, don't know one don't touch the other. Simple. Not to mention that all is available on the net. Wiki argument is not great, why not to run OS without security at all? There is no way to 100% protect box, so what is the point settting any protection at all?
    Of course syncookies must be first enabled in kernel for sysctl command to work (by default in vanilla this is disabled), magic syskey can also be disabled in kernel and then whatever you do this option is gone.
    sysctl gives easy way to control these features. It always amazes me that people have no idea about sysctl claiming at the same way that customization and security convinced them that linux is superior to windows.
    default settings in sysctl.conf are remnants of good OBSD policy: everything is disabled, enable onlywhat you need. The opposite is windows policy: everything is enabled, disable what you don't need. Latter is much mode difficult to control.
    I like sysctl because it gives so much control over disk performance (including fine tuning of fs), network, memory handling and obviously kernel based system hardening.
    sysctl is so well described, than everybody can easily learn how to use it.
    It's not equivalent to granting users power access, because you need physical access to the computer to use it.
    magic sysrq is used for remote reboot for example (need to install ipt_sysrq).
    On the other hand, disabling magic sysrq in sysctl.conf is not safest option because there is some periond of time before sysctl.conf is read so disabling in kernel config is better option from security standpoint

  • Deprecation of /etc/sysctl.conf

    With the last update I've moved sysctl.conf.pacsave into /etc/sysctl.d/99-sysctl.conf
    Within sysctl.conf I had the option kernel.sysrq = 1
    Now, if there is a panic kernel the key combination of ALT+ImpPnt + R+S+E+I+U+B doesn't work
    Is there any solution?

  • No need for /etc/asound.conf ~/.asoundrc for mixing anymore?

    Hullo!
    I just installed the new version of MPD and was at the first time trying to do ALSA all the mixing of multiple audio streams on its own and found it working without any problems.
    Sure, this is surely nothing new an might be the case since a year or something like that, but to improve the Archwiki article on this, I'd like to hear some more experiences with this setup from people who use other programs than me...
    Ok, here's how I've done it.
    You need a correctly set up ALSA as well as 'libao' installed.
    To use libao, create either /etc/libao.conf(for system-wide setup) or ~/.libao and write only this line into it:
    default_driver=alsa09
    There are (at least to my knowlegde) 3 types of programs:
    1. The ones that directly support alsa output
    2. Programs that use libao for audio output
    3. Programs supporting only oss output.
    It is possible to mix the output of all these programs simultaneously to your card. it works!
    mpd: (supports direct alsa output)
    does not need any sound specific settings in the conf file. It chooses a usable audio output itself.
    NOTE:I only have alsa as output device installed. I don't know, who mpd behaves when it finds artsd, esd, jack or whatever. Specifying a certain output may be necessary to have everything working.
    mplayer, mpg321, gaim (libao)
    these programs use libao to pipe their audio streams to whereever libao sends them, so setting default_driver to alsa09 solves all problems with these programs
    opera (as example for the oss fraction)
    Has to be started through "aoss opera" to enjoy sound mixing with flash movies and mp3s in the browser. To avoid having to load aoss before starting any oss-app, shaurz has posted a solution in the forums. Nice thing!
    That are all the programs I've tried so far and I have no problems with scratching sounds or reduced sound quality (as the wiki says) but maybe I just can't hear any difference with my disco-damaged ears..
    What I would like to hear now: Whar are your experiencas with the alsa software mixing systeme aka dmix in 'vanilla setup'? Did you find any programs that need an own asound-configuration or is this setup commonly-usable without any disadvantages so an update to the concerning wiki-page could be finally done?
    greets,
    jakob

    I noticed something strange (cool) aswell. I've got an onboard Realtek somethingsomething sound"card" (using the snd-intel8x0 module). It didn't support mixing out of the box on Linux using ALSA. I had to fiddle aroudn with dmix after which it would work great.
    I'm running a pretty recent installation and I hadn't come around to do the mixing part of my sound yet, but yesterday it seemed to work by itself! Before, I could only have one source using ALSA (e.g. one mplayer). But now, it all works together!
    I don't know what I did that made this happen. Maybe just a simple pacman -Syu. Or maybe I got wasted and fixed it after I blacked out, another viable possibility.

  • Printing pages in reverse order as a default for Mac os 10.6.3

    Help!
    Not sure what happened ...
    I'm trying to print document from all applications and as a default the driver is printing pages (E.G 20page doc)
    with page 1 first and the 2 on top, then 3 etc (pages face up as is ink jet fashion...) finally with page 20 on top ...
    No good, not what I want!
    I do know that I can open the Word print dialog box which does contain a setting Copies & Pages/Page Handling/Page Order with the options "automatic, normal, reverse" but every time I go into a new doc I have to do this every time.
    How do I set this as the default?
    Maybe this is not an Apple issue? I'm using an Epson TX810FW ...may have to take it up with them ...?
    Any help would be most gratefully appreciated!!
    F

    Set it up how you want it and then save it as a preset. You will probably find that once you've used it the print driver will default to it on subsequent printings.

  • Wrong defaults for sysctl -p since upgrade to systemd 207?

    I've run into this when trying to increase the inotify watches limit following these instructions.
    Since upgrading systemd to version 207 sysctl.conf no longer exists, so instead I've put the following line in /etc/sysctl.d/99-sysctl.conf:
    fs.inotify.max_user_watches = 524288
    But when running "sudo sysctl -p" I get the following message:
    $ sudo sysctl -p
    sysctl: cannot open "/etc/sysctl.conf": No such file or directory
    This is because according to the man page for sysctl:
    -p[FILE], --load[=FILE]
    Load in sysctl settings from the file specified or
    /etc/sysctl.conf if none given.
    So, "sysctl -p" by default looks for the sysctl.conf file, which no longer exists in up-to-date arch boxes.
    The solution of course is simply running:
    sudo sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.d/99-sysctl.conf
    But my question is, shouldn't "sysctl -p" look for settings files in /etc/sysctl.d and run all of them by default, instead of looking for a file which does not exist? (and that, even if it exists, will not be run on startup). From my understanding, "sysctl -p" is supposed to apply by default the same settings that will be applied on the next reboot.

    @kaszak696: no, "sysctl --system" also gives an error message:
    $ sudo sysctl --system
    [sudo] password for amatriain:
    * Applying /usr/lib/sysctl.d/50-coredump.conf ...
    kernel.core_pattern = |/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-coredump %p %u %g %s %t %e
    * Applying /usr/lib/sysctl.d/50-default.conf ...
    kernel.sysrq = 16
    kernel.core_uses_pid = 1
    net.ipv4.conf.default.rp_filter = 1
    net.ipv4.conf.default.accept_source_route = 0

    fs.inotify.max_user_watches = 524288
    * Applying /etc/sysctl.conf ...
    sysctl: cannot open "/etc/sysctl.conf": No such file or directory
    Thanks for finding another example of sysctl wrongly assuming that sysctl.conf exists
    I'll report the bug to upstream.

  • [root@test2 etc]# cat sysctl.conf

    When i add some entry in
    [root@test2 etc]# cat sysctl.conf
    reboot the server or restart the file ........new in this need suggestions to make the change permanent.

    assuming you are using Linux, hope that answer your question.
    Using any text editor, create or edit the /etc/sysctl.conf file, and add or edit lines similar to the following:
    Note:
    Include lines only for the kernel parameter values that you want to change. For the semaphore parameters (kernel.sem), you must specify all four values. However, if any of the current values are larger than the recommended value, then specify the larger value.
    kernel.shmall = 2097152
    kernel.shmmax = 2147483648
    kernel.shmmni = 4096
    kernel.sem = 250 32000 100 128
    fs.file-max = 65536
    net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range = 1024 65000
    net.core.rmem_default = 1048576
    net.core.rmem_max = 1048576
    net.core.wmem_default = 262144
    net.core.wmem_max = 262144
    By specifying the values in the /etc/sysctl.conf file, they persist when you restart the system.
    On SUSE systems only, enter the following command to ensure that the system reads the /etc/sysctl.conf file when it restarts:
    # /sbin/chkconfig boot.sysctl on

  • 10.10.1  I use sysctl.conf to increased shared memory.  10.10.1 does not read sysctl.conf anymore

    I need to increase shared memory.  In 10.10  is use /etc/sysctl.conf with a line   kern.sysv.shmmax=16777216 and this works.  Also in 10.9.  But in 10.10.1 shared memory can no longer be increased from the default 4194304 by this means.
    The question is simple:   how in 10.10.1 does one increase kern.sysv.shmmax  in a way that survives a re-boot

    I have the same problem on my windows 2003 server but the
    thing is that I have not been able to get the same error on any
    other machine including a windows 2003 I installed on VMWare on the
    same machine. I have narrowed down to where in the encoder this
    happens. The encoder uses page file backed file maps to register
    session information. The call to MapViewOfFileEx method of the
    Win32 API fails with the "access denied" error. Whatever it is,
    it's due to some defect in the Windows installation I have because
    I do not get that message on any other windows installation even
    the ones I do with the same windows CD !
    I am still trying to find out what the defect might be but I
    thought you should know it's got nothing to do with you Windows
    make and model...it happens for me on 2k3 and for you on XP...so
    you should looke elsewhere..

    I am aware that it also depends on my appication behaviour , but i just want to check whether the above settings would suffice for a 16GB RAM machine and 64 bit oracle10g
    Also let me know if any other setttings apart from this are required , i choose to use SGA Target .Further my application is read intensive . Your suggestions will be highly appreciated.
    Thanx

    Hi,
    I suggest you to increase the value kernel.shmmax = 8589934592 of this parameter in sysctl.conf to kernel.shmmax = 1288490188
    Later if you want to increase the size of SGA then you need to modify the kernel.shmmax = 8589934592 value. In general practice we keep kernel.shmmax value little greater then the value of SGA.

  • User defaults for cs

    hi everybody,
    does anybody know a good way to set the various prefs of the creative suite like transparency flattener presets, GREP queries, workspaces, color profiles, etc. as a default for network users which come from an xserve?
    thx in advance

    Hello Experts,
    I was wondering if users can actually change defaults in user request or can they change it using SU3.
    As when i configured the user defaults,my assumption is that whenever a user is created he/she will receive the defaults defined per system for her account.
    Also what use does the User default system do(my assumption is that the system defined here will be populated automatically for all user requests ...correct me if i am wrong)
    Thanks
