Samson C01U Condenser Mic

I found several sources that mentioned using aggregate devices to get the samson C01U Mic working in Logic Express. The instruction says to choose the C01U and "Built in Audio" from the list in the add aggregate device screen. However, "Built in audio" does not exist whereas "built in output" and "built in input" do. I can get my MIC to work only when I choose built in output along with C01U. The problem is I get output through my speakers when I'm recording. I never did when I used the same mic in Garageband. I am accustomed to hearing the other tracks and not hearing the input stuff I'm recording. This also makes the system prone to feedback. What can I do?

No I didn't. My hunch is that selecting Built in output in the aggregate device editor causes the recording to output similar to input monitoring. Guess I'll have to deal with it. The end result is that I am struggling with latency. I would just rather not hear what I'm playing (other than the live sound) while I record.

  • Samson C01U usb mic/low input level

I recently bought a Samson C01U usb condenser mic to use with Garageband to record voice and piano for my music studio. When I plug it in, it is recognized in system preferences/Sound. But when I try to record in Garageband, the input level monitor barely responds. I've selected Mono 1, as advised by tech support at Samson. I can't figure out why this mic isn't working, since it's recommended for this exact purpose. I don't think I should need a pre amp, but now am wondering if I do. I'd be so grateful for any advice.

You know, the Samson C01U worked ok with the SoftPre software from Samsontech under Tiger. The input levels could be bumped up sufficiently for the **** thing to actually work even if the input signal was still on the low side.
Since SoftPre doesn't work with Leopard, the C01U is basically an expensive paperweight.
Since Samsontech seem incapable of getting their act together in putting out an operational Leopard compatible SoftPre software release, my advice to the wider Mac community is to BOYCOTT THEM! If Samsontech aren't receptive to consumer needs and flexible enough to act accordingly when the OS is updated, they deserve to suffer the commercial consequences - period!
I'm looking forward to the liberating ritual of taking a giant sledgehammer and obliterating my now useless, overpriced Samson C01U. It's going to be awesome !

  • Samson C01U USB mic/audio recording software.

whats small, free, and reliable audio recording software? on Mac OS X.10.4.5
On XP I like adobe audition, and cool edit pro2
Im having hard time getting Samson C01U USB Studio Condenser Mic to record on my emac ,on audacity
    http://www.samsontech.com/

Cubase LE is good, but Garageband, part of the iLife 06 suite is nice. I recorded a vocal trio to backing tracks and mixed it down to CD using only the effects provided in the program.
Like any software recording system, the more effects you add the more processing power you're using up, but garageband works real well.
I used the Presonus Firepod as an interface, worked fine. Any interface box will work.
If you're only doing a single audio input for a podcast, then Quicktime pro is good. It's not free, but for 30+ bucks it's worth the investment.
    I've used a piece of Shareware.... D-SoundPro
you can google search it. Nice stand alone piece of software, does some amazing things with audio for a shareware product.
    Hope this helps.

  • Premiere CC 2014 and Samson C01U USB mic

Hi, I have a problem with a samson C01U USB microphone because premiere cc 2014 doesn't recognize it in the hardware section (mac version). It's curious because Audition recognizes it perfectly and it works ok. Any solution? Thanks

Using USB mics in Pr on OS X can be... challenging.  Run the Audio Midi Setup utility (part of OS X) and create a new Aggregate Device.  In said, add the USB mic as the "input", along with whatever output device you're using (Line Out, Built-In, etc) as the output.
Back to Pr in the Audio Hardware config, choose that new Aggregate Device as your sound device.  Since you put both the mic and your output devices into it, you'll be able to use that as an input and output device.
Finally, you're going to want to create a new audio track that's mono-only.  Use that track to record from the mic.
That should do the trick for you.

  • Condenser mic problem

I just switched from an SM58 to a Samson CL8 condenser mic. I have it connected to a M-Audio MobilePre USB interface with phantom power connected to line 1 in the back with a XLR cable...I'm getting a signal on the unit but nothing in the software. I still get levels with my SM58 or guitar on the 1/4 "line in" so I'm not sure why the condenser mic isn't registering. I'm registering a signal light and even clipping light on the unit. Any thoughts? Do I have to change something in my mac for a condenser mic?

If you hear through the interface and not in the software, that means you're hearing the signal through your audio interface's direct monitoring. Open your interface's control panel and you should have a mixer there.
ALL MY SETTINGS IN THE INTERFACE MIXER APPEAR TO BE OK...everything is the same as I've been using...levels aren't panned and look high
If you're hearing sound on just one side, that means inputs are hard panned. Bring then pan controls to the center. Now, you can control how audio is routed with direct-monitoring. I know, that doesn't fix your problem with the software but it's good step to better understand how things work. Next step is to stop using direct-monitoring and monitor through Logic. Open your audio preferences and check "Software monitoring" in the Devices tab.
"open AUDIO PREFERENCES...do you mean in the software or in my system settings?
Go back to your audio track channel strip and select either input 1 or 2 (probably 2 if your XLR is input 2) in the input selector. If you only have input 1-2 available, that means you have a stereo track. Click on the circles under the level meter to make it mono. Click either on I (input-monitor) or R (record) to hear your audio.
IT'S WEIRD BECAUSE I HAVEN'T CHANGED ANYTHING FROM THE SETTINGS THAT WORKED WITH USING THE LINE IN JACK BUT NOW I CAN'T GET ANYTHING TO SHOW UP IN THE SOFTWARE AT ALL.
Try changing the input inside Garageband to MIC INPUT 1.
If the microphone requires phantom power, please turn that on in your interface.
Do not have two things connected to the same channel, eg channel 1. this will cause the interface to default to one of them, probably the Line Input.
Also, please read the manual of your interface to become a LOT more familiar with it'd functions, and how to use it within a DAW like Logic.
It MUST be the audio interface selected within Logic's audio hardware preferences, for Logic to use it.

  • Usb condenser mics -- samson or blue

i'm looking to purchase a couple usb microphones for a budget home-studio. as far as i know, there are two choices when it comes to good usb condenser mics: blue's snowball, and samson's co1u mic.
does anyone have any experience with either of these mics and any suggestions or recommendations?
    thanks.

Greetings. I just tested my Blue "Snow Ball." After just a few minutes getting all prefs set, I was up and running. Unfortunately, I have one of those G5's that even at rest sounds like a Hoover vacuum cleaner. The mic, in any of its 3 configurations, picks up the drone of my tower, loud and clear. I can't believe that after spending a small fortune on this computer that I am going to have to sell it and get a new tower, simply to have a near silent machine. It's either that or hide the unit under my desk, which I find myself loathe to do as one of the things I love most about all Mac hardware is it's unmatchable aesthetic beauty of its industrial design. My Mac is one of the nicest pieces of furniture in my house. (Yes, I'm single.) I have always hated how noisy this machine is. Before it was an annoyance. Today it became unbearable and totally unacceptable. Sorry for the rant! I do love the mic, though. Be sure to download the new firmware at Blue's web site or you will find the mic unusable. Good luck. - Frank

  • Samson C01U not working in LE8

I can't get my Samson C01U USB microphone to work with LE8.
Many others also have the same problem, while Apple stores sell both LE8 and the Samson C01U microphone.
Is there someone out there that has the solution to make the microphone work with Logic Express 8 or do I have to go back to the store and ask my money back for LE8 (as GarageBand works perfectly with the Samson C01U and LE8 claims to be a step higher up the ladder
It didn't work in Tiger and it also doesn't work in Leopard either, please help.
    Cheers, Ron de Jong

I know you said that you've done this, but this is available.
    http://www.samsontech.com/products/productFAQs.cfm?prodID=1810&brandID=2
    Straight from the horses mouth.
I'd say remove everything that you have made as an agg/device and try staring using the steps in the samsontech article.
If the mic isn't directly connected to the macs usb ports you might have issues. Try no hub if you're on one.
I'm on OS 10.4.11 though. Don't know if that makes any difference, but I did have the same problem you did with that mic. You'll dig it once you have it hooked up.

  • Samson cu01 usb mic

Help! I cant seem to get my cu01 to work with logic express I have tried most everthing, including the advice samson gives on their site. when I select the cu01 in the audio hardware and play logic I dont get any input from the mic, as well, I get a midi audio sync error. and nautrally no output, if I switch back to the built in audio driver everything works fine but still no mic level. any ideas
    1.8ghz power pc   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

A search in this forum with "Samson CU01 USB" bring this:
    (from a previous post)
"Using the Samson C01U with Apple Logic (Mac OS X)
This is the process of setting up the CO1U to work in Logic. This will only work in OSX 10.4 or later.
10.3 and earlier versions don’t have this facility.
Open Audio MIDI Setup (from the Applications/Utilities folder)
Go to the Audio Menu - Open Aggregate Device Editor ⇧⌘A
Click on the + button to create a new device
It's a good idea to rename it (double click on Aggregate Device in the list and enter the new name eg. CO1U)
The list at the bottom of the window will show all the audio devices connected to the computer. Select the ones you want the device to use by checking the “use” button. For instance, if you only have a CO1U connected you will need to check CO1U and Built-in Audio. Check the clock button on one of the devices, not the CO1U.
    Click Done
And that’s it. The device will then appear in Logic under Audio Hardware and Drivers as an available I/O."
C'mon guys, before posting, try to make a search before!

  • Samson C01U worked fine on G4 PPC but has extensive digital hiss on Imac

I love this microphone, and used to use it on a G4 PPC where it worked absolutely fine. The only noise it picked up was from the noisy computer. Now I have a quiet Imac and the Mic pics up a lot of digital noise. It isn't amplifying anything in the room. For instance if I turn the input level all the way down in Apple MIDI Setup all the way down it still comes through. Any ideas how to remedy this? Is this a power to USB port issue?
    Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Samson C01U advice

    afternoon all.
i recently bought a samson c01u usb condensor mic for gettin vocals down on my recordings. 1st of all, im very happy with the quality of the recordings.
however, im finding some words are being picked up less, and as a result get lost when added as a layer to a mix. and vice versa, sometimes some words are louder and stand out too much in the mix.
i think this is to do with mic positioning, and the mic being a hyper cardioid pickup pattern, i probably move around too much when recording.
however, with the recordinigs all ready done, is there anything i can use in audition to balance out the levels? so amplify the quieter, and reduce the louder waves?
please note, this is only very subtle stuff, but i like stuff to be as perfect as poss and dont really wanna go through each individual track and boost the volumes individually, so if theres another way please let  me know.
im on audition 3.0, also have 1.5
    thanks guys
    andy

cheers bob, just by tryin the smooth vocal preset it actually worked wonders, and i did a little EQ'ing myself to give the vocals a little more top end, and they're comin through much nicer know.thanks.andy

Have a play with compression effect under the Amplitude and Compression/Dynamics Processing menu.
You'll have to play with the adjustments to get exactly what you want but, if the need is as slight as you describe, perhaps start with the "Smooth Vocal" preset then adjust from there.  The graphic display will probably give you a hint about what's going on, but, to use it properly, it's probably worth doing some Googling and some background reading on what compression (and the available adjustments do.
However, at the most basic, you will be applying some limiting to all sounds above a certain level, meaning that when you apply some "make up gain" the ratio between the quiet and louder bits gets smaller.
Too much and you may hear artefacts but to increase the intelligibility, it's just the ticket.

  • Do i need phantom power for a condenser mic to use with garageband?

i have learned condenser mics need phantom power. if i would hook up a MXL 900 series condenser to my MacBook via an XLR to 1/8" cable, would it work? does garageband have some sort of amplification plug-in? or would i need some sort of mixer or otehr phantom power device for it to work?
    MacBook 2.0gHz (White)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

condenser mics need phantom power to work at all, it has nothing to do with amplification.
you need an interface or mixer that supplies phantom power, or an external phantom power supply to use your condenser mic.

  • Condenser mic for podcasts

Apols if this has already been covered, but I've just bought a Sony condenser mic (can clip on, or sit on a stand) to enhance the sound of my voice on my debut podcast. However, in spite of changing the System Preferences to line-in it doesn't actually pick anything up. There re no sound bars showing, either in System Preferences or Garageband. There's nothing wrong with the mic (tested it elsewhere), so are faulty line-ins a known issue with G5s? Or would a USB-powered mic have been a better buy.

I'm assuming since you said you tested it elsewhere that this mic has a battery? Condenser mics need a power supply of some kind
As for plugging a Mic into a Line-In, here's some background:
and finally "does such a microphone pre-amp thing exist."
Yes, there are many. A popular chocie in this forum has been the MIDIMAN Audio Buddy Dual Microphone Preamp
I think you might be better off returning the Sony mic and looking at a high quality USB mic such as the Blue Snowball USB Microphone, with which I have no personal experience, but I have seen very positive comments online regarding it.
Hope that helps --HangTime [Will Compute for Food] B-|>

  • Condenser mics and the Firebox

I'm sure HangTime can give a bunch of insight into this one. Hope others can too.
I've narrowed my choice for my audio interface to the Presonus Firebox. Briefly considered the FirePod (at HangTime's suggestion) but it's just too large to travel with. Doing live recording of a band on tour in Europe (large clubs and small theaters) via two mics at the soundboard along with a stereo board feed into my MacBook using GB with an external Firewire hard drive.
Had originally planned on using the SM57s but after much research it seems like the Firebox has issues with providing enough gain for dynamic mics. So, it seems, I'm now looking at condenser mics.
If this is true then I'm considering the Shure SM94. From what I can tell these seem to be the hot-rod condenser version of the SM57. Does anyone have any other suggestions for a good condenser mic pairing in the price range or less of the 94s (approx $180 each) Any help is appreciated. This is the last piece of the equation before I drop the money on the whole setup!

I found some Shotgun mics in the $170 to $250 range, some are names I recognize, but I can't give any opinion on actual use ... just something to check out.
hope you get some comments on the 94s ... my bet is that in a loud house, any good quality mic will do a good job. best of luck

  • Condenser mic for voice recording - setup advice ??

    Hi All,
Newbie to GB. Want to setup my condenser mic (3.5mm) to record voice tracks. The condenser mic was purchased with a HD Camcorder and works great for video. Currently the mic works through the "line-in" but at very low level. Done a little research and Hangtime recommends the use of a USB interface.
    http://www.thehangtime.com/gb/gbfaq2.html#recordlinein
    (thanks hangtime).
I'm now looking at the griffin imic as an inexpensive solution. Before I drop my $$ on this guy, is this the best solution. (or will it do the job right??)
    Feedback appreciated.
    Matt.
    G5 D1.8 1GB/160/SD   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Garageband 1.1.0

My advice would be the same as CD's. If you have a Line-In, for the same price as an iMic you could get a small mixer like the Behringer UB502 Eurorack Mixer for about $38, add a 1/8" to 1/4" adaptor, and you'll have much better control than with the iMic alone.
