Samson CO1U - USB microphone

I'd like to post my experience with buying a new mic. I was a little unsure whether an USB mic would work with Linux, but with this model there's fortunately nothing to be afraid of - it works just out of box.
Although you can record directly from it using Audacity (after selecting it as an input source in Edit > Preferences > Devices > Recording > Device), I find it more useful and reliable (in the case of the direct recording Audacity can cut it) to use the JACK server. Few easy steps:
Install qjackctl.
Run qjackctl.
Select the proper device for the mic in Edit > Input device.
You'll probably have to restart qjackctl.
Click "Start" button to start the JACK server.
If you want to hear feedback of your mic (probably not on speakers but on headphones), click "Connect" and connect capture device number 1 with both playback devices (they're more probably channels than devices) - the reason for connecting just number 1 is that the left channel of the mic is the main record, the right channel is somehow quieter and seems unnecessary. Notice that there will be some small latency.
Run Audacity - don't run it earlier, because it wouldn't recognise JACK.
Select JACK in Edit > Preferences > Devices > Interface. It's useful to switch to mono recording.
Now you can record. It's possible to overdub while listening to both the original sound and the recorded sound (with the mentioned small latency of the recorded sound).
One more think I'd like to tell about is the quality of this mic - it's really good, I don't have to depend on a sound card because it has its own A/D convertor. With my laptop's internal sound card, there was always some white noise using analog mics, but now it's gone. There are also videos on YouTube demonstrating the quality.

Greetings. I just bought the Samson a couple of days ago and I'm pretty happy with it. If you would like me to send you an audio sample, let me know. Currently I am using Garageband 2 to record with it. I've got a future podcast in the works and for the price, I was pleasantly surprised.

  • Since doing some research I'm considering purchasing the "Samson CO1U - USB Studio Condenser Microphone" I was just wondering if it will work with Garageband?

I am hoping to use my Mac as a very simple recording studio nothing major. I was just wondering if anyone had used the
Samson CO1U - USB Studio Condenser Microphone
I am hoping to use it straight into garageband to record lyrics and guitar and perhaps some percussion.
    Many thanks

I have used it mostly for speech recordings, not for music. I would call it "podcast quality", for music I use a better condenser mic with an audio interface.

  • Samson C03U USB Microphone

For some reason, my USB microphone is not being recognized by Logic Express...I had it working before but now nothing? The only options I see under my Core Audio prefs are Internal Microphone and Line-In? Any ideas why the mic isn't working now even when record-enabling a track?
It seems to have disappeared after I changed the Core Audio settings.....I've changed them back and now the USB Audio Device won't disappear?
The strange thing is, it DOES work in GarageBand, and any other audio app I attempt to record audio with using the USB microphone, it works in everything except Logic Express...
Note: i've also tried installing a copy of Logic Express on my PPC Mac Mini G4, and the same thing happens - it works once, then if I change a setting in Core Audio, I only see the 2 options, not the Samson USB Device....
    HELP!

You need to get it recognized in Audio/MIDI set up, and create an aggregate device.
    This thread explains how:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2094732&#2094732
It seems to have disappeared after I changed the Core Audio setting
You may have changed the previously selected driver - that would do it.

  • SAMSON CO1U USB Condenser Microphone....*****!

You can ONLY use ONE mic at a time ....I'm trying to do a podcast talk show with 4 Mics (Me , my co-host and 2 guests)...I've done real radio talk shows before.
I'm using a Apple G5 and 4 C01U (USB) mics. My Mac "sees" the 4 mics BUT only allows me to pic one for all audio input....that *****! on the site it said "The worlds first USB Studio Condenser Microphone
    Ideal for Podcasting!" ...i don't think so...I'm i doing something wrong? http://www.samsontech.com/index.cfm

The problems you're having with the mic are not really problems with the mic. Unless you are using a fancy multi-track recording set-up, Apples only handle one audio input and one audio output at a time. Sounds logical, right? I assume when you plug the mics into a hub, the Mac recognizes them all and wants you to choose one, just like it would with a scanner or printer.
If you need to use multiple mics, you should get four mics with XLR connectors and a small mixer.
I recorded a podcast or two with the Samson around Thanksgiving time when we were out of town. To hear my results, check out:

I used the USB mic, a software compressor and a foam pop screen. I wouldn't say it sounds as good as my "studio" mic, but it didn't cost as much either and is MUCH more portable.
    Best of luck -

  • Premiere CC 2014 and Samson C01U USB mic

Hi, I have a problem with a samson C01U USB microphone because premiere cc 2014 doesn't recognize it in the hardware section (mac version). It's curious because Audition recognizes it perfectly and it works ok. Any solution? Thanks

Using USB mics in Pr on OS X can be... challenging.  Run the Audio Midi Setup utility (part of OS X) and create a new Aggregate Device.  In said, add the USB mic as the "input", along with whatever output device you're using (Line Out, Built-In, etc) as the output.
Back to Pr in the Audio Hardware config, choose that new Aggregate Device as your sound device.  Since you put both the mic and your output devices into it, you'll be able to use that as an input and output device.
Finally, you're going to want to create a new audio track that's mono-only.  Use that track to record from the mic.
That should do the trick for you.

  • Help with USB Microphone Issues

Checked the support area about USB Mics but am still having trouble.
I am running Soundbooth stand alone, on my Mac Book..Leopard OS. I have a Samson Co3U USB microphone with a Samson Soft PreAmp loaded. I am switching over from Garageband to Soundbooth. I have actually used Soundbooth once and it worked fine..until this week. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong now. Probably need lessons. The Midi set up is set to System default Input/Output which is actually set to the Samson mic, but when I record, all I get is a very muffled audio. I know its not the mic because it still works great on my other MacBook in Garageband.
I also wonder whether Soundbooth is just not compatible with Garageband on the same Mac.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    Heather

    Hi Heather,
Soundbooth and GarageBand can exist side-by-side with no troubles. In fact, many GarageBand users use Soundbooth to edit their loops and clips, and to clean up and trim their GB projects.
The Samson USB mics are very nice and should work well with Soundbooth. Along with the Blue microphones, the Samson series are the other higher-end USB microphones that I use for testing.
As a quick test, and to make certain we don't affect any other applications, let's try making a customized Aggregate Audio device for Soundbooth using the Samson mic.
    * Close Soundbooth. Open Finder and click Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.
    * Click the AUDIO DEVICES button at the top then in the menu bar select Audio > Open Aggregate Device Editor
    * Click the [+] button to create a new aggregate device. Name it SOUNDBOOTH DEVICE and select the Built-in Output and Samson C03U devices from the bottom list. Click Done and close the Audio MIDI setup tool.
    * Launch Soundbooth, then open Preferences > Audio Hardware. Change the Default Device dropdown to the new SOUNDBOOTH DEVICE we created, then click OK.
    * Try recording!
This driver setup should force Soundbooth to use the Samson device for input, and nothing else. IF you still experience the muffled audio or other recording problems, please reply with more information and we can continue troubleshooting.
    Thanks,
    Durin

  • MBPr does not recognize Samson USB microphone.

I've been using a Samson GoMic USB for several months. Just today the MBPr has stopped responding to it. I can see the mic under <Sound>, I can select it as the input device, but it does not register any sound input. Works fine on two other macs. Build 12D78, osX 10.8.3  Any tips?
    Thanks

Check your settings in the Audio Midi Setup app which is located inside your Utilities folder.

  • Looking into - Samson C03U Multi-Pattern USB Microphone

I have been experimenting with Garageband 3 on my MacBook Pro. Personally, the computer mic does a decent job (to me) but all the reviews say otherwise. (Maybe I should burn a disc first and see how it sounds on my stereo vs my computer. So, I am looking to purchase the microphone mentioned above in the subject line. Along with a pop filter (thank you Hangtime for that tip in an earlier forum). Do any of you know anything about this microphone? Even better, have any of you had experience with this microphone and used it with garageband?
The microphone will be used for vocals only, since I do not play an instrument (unless some of you consider the "voice" an instrument).

Hangtime go to next paragraph. To other potential respondents: your opinion/experience is still valuable to me. I will be checking back daily. Meanwhile, I am going to take my chances - I have procrastinated on this for far too long.
Great, thanks for the thumbs up, Hangtime. I am going to interpret your reply as a "might as well give it a go." Although, I am curious as to what sites you went to in order to research the mic.
It was lunacy looking into just a microphone. I finally focused on looking for a USB microphone so I would not have to buy a firepod. (I only record vocals) So, I shall see how it goes and maybe (if I remember) post a follow-up later on. Assuming that I would be able to do that in this forum. No, I did not read the privacy act agreement word for word.
So, FYI, checked out your web (3) - I must say that that in seeing your moniker over and over - "Sleep is for the Weak" - must be true for you. Thanks for all of the straight-up and polite answers. Keep up the "good work."

  • Using Samson CO1U in cs5.5

Alright so ive been using adobe on and off for two or three years. Recently i used a snowball mic with audacity so i had to download an asio driver no biggie. The snowball wasnt mine and my friend took it back so ive been using the samson co1u with no problems on the recording end. Other than the fact that i have to amplify my voice on any track at least three times to be audible but after doing that and mixing the file down to an mp3 my vocals are always way to quiet to be heard. The only way my voice is audible is if i play it through a laptop or plug in speakers or headphones. WHat is the reason for this? On previous files using the asio driver with the snowball this never happened. WHatever levels the vocals were in the session was the same thing in the mixdown but that isnt the case with the samson. Ive tried reading other forums and using their suggestions such as turning the latency off and down. Some one help  have fiver sounds recorded like this and a mi=ultitude left bbut i want to do them right

I've just been involved in a discussion of USB mics in another forum and I gather the C01U is notorious for having a very low output level.
The best way to fix this (other than buying a different mic) is to raise levels at the time of recording and this is handled by your computer, not Audition.
Assuming you're on Window's (if it's a Mac somebody else will have to help) open your audio control panel (right click on the little speaker icon on the lower right of your screen) then select Record Devices.  Double click on your Samson mic.  In the control panel that comes up, select the "Levels" tab and raise the level.  With a low output mic like the Samson, you might need to  move the "Microphone Boost" slider as well.  Experiment until the average level coming from your voice is around -12 with peaks at -6 or so.
Why your mixes are not the same level as you see when mixing I can't be sure without knowing how you're raising the levels in the first place--Audition can do this lots of different ways.  However, I suspect this might become a non-problem if you get the recorded levels right in the first place.

  • Using USB Microphone With GarageBand iPad?

Hi, I have the Samson G-Track USB Microphone and have been using it with GarageBand for iPad (with a powered USB hub) and I was wondering if there is a way to enable "Monitor" so that when I speak into the microphone I can hear myself in the headphones? I have no problem recording with the microphone, I just can't hear myself when I'm recording. There are a few switches on the actual microphone that could control this or it could all be controlled from iPad itself, just looking for anyone who could help with this matter. Thanks!

I'm having the same problem trying to monitor my turntable recording via a USB phono amp connected via a USB hub to the photo connection kit.
Have you had any help with this yet?

  • Samson cu01 usb mic

Help! I cant seem to get my cu01 to work with logic express I have tried most everthing, including the advice samson gives on their site. when I select the cu01 in the audio hardware and play logic I dont get any input from the mic, as well, I get a midi audio sync error. and nautrally no output, if I switch back to the built in audio driver everything works fine but still no mic level. any ideas

A search in this forum with "Samson CU01 USB" bring this:

"Using the Samson C01U with Apple Logic (Mac OS X)
This is the process of setting up the CO1U to work in Logic. This will only work in OSX 10.4 or later.
10.3 and earlier versions don’t have this facility.
Open Audio MIDI Setup (from the Applications/Utilities folder)
Go to the Audio Menu - Open Aggregate Device Editor ⇧⌘A
Click on the + button to create a new device
It's a good idea to rename it (double click on Aggregate Device in the list and enter the new name eg. CO1U)
The list at the bottom of the window will show all the audio devices connected to the computer. Select the ones you want the device to use by checking the “use” button. For instance, if you only have a CO1U connected you will need to check CO1U and Built-in Audio. Check the clock button on one of the devices, not the CO1U.
    Click Done
And that’s it. The device will then appear in Logic under Audio Hardware and Drivers as an available I/O."
C'mon guys, before posting, try to make a search before!

  • USB microphone recording

Hi, I recently picked up the HpX360 and there is a problem when I am recording with my Samson Go Mic (USB microphone). There is constant static in my recordings. I know that it is not background noise because this static is occuring when my recording volume is on 0. Secondly, I know it is not the microphone's problem because the microphone works fine on my friend's laptop. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both the sound and samson go mic drivers. I've tried using different USB ports. I've tried changing the sample rate and the bit depth, but the static is still there. I'm wondering if it is an internal error with my laptop? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Problem 1. You can't normally alter the level of a USB mic via the usual Windows Sound Mixer page since USB audio goes direct digitally into Audition not via your on board analogue sound card.
Problem 2 is a fairly common problem using USB audio devices with laptops. May go away if you run the laptop from it's internal batteries rather than from the mains supply.

  • USB Microphone settings

Can someone please clue me in on the proper settings to get my new SAMSON USB microphone to work? I got it to work once, by luck I suspect, by messing with the settings in Audio/MIDI set up, Garage band preferences and the sound settings in my system prefs. There is some holy combo that I can not recreate.
Extra special thanks if you can help me figure out how to have both the voice (from the mic) and my guitar can be recorded at the same time.

You can check AMS to make sure the mic is set to 41000 sample rate and a bit depth of 16, but other than that, all you have to do is select the USB mic in GB's prefs. What have you done in GB? Have you created a New Basic Track?
For the guitar when you have AMS running, open its help and search for "Aggregate Device". You may be able to create one which includes the USB Mic and the line-In. The you'd select the Aggy Device in GB's prefs, and select which channels to record on which tracks in Track Info.

I just got logic. The only mic I have is a Samson C03U USB . For some reason I can't get my computer to detect the mic when I plug it in (directly in the USB port). How do I get Logic recognize the mic?
