Samsung 1,5 TB drive causing slowdown?
I've installed a Samsung SATA 1,5 TB (5400 rpm) hard disk as a fourth drive in my Mac Pro and since then accessing files, also on the other 3 drives, has gotten much slower. I took it out now, because opening files in any program (Photoshop, FCP, ) and even scrolling through files in Finder took way too long. Does this have to do with the 5400 rpm? Or is a Mac Pro always slower with all 4 HD-bays filled? Or should I just install another brand of drive?
Thanks for your help.
Seagate has had nothing but problems. Green WD drive can also be wrong option in some setups as well.

Going into my hard drive causes mac pro to lock up like fort knox
Hi, I have been a mac user for just a hair over a year.(Apple will not help me with anything)
All has been swell until now.
If I go into my hard drive my computer locks right up. I can do
nothing to move it along. The only option I have is to hold down the
power button for six seconds, which kills me and the computer a little
each time. I booted up the computer using the mac install disc and I
used disk utility to "repair" the disk. It reported the disk was "OK".
I thought swell, and went into documents on the hard disk and it
locked my computer up again. I let it sit there for an hour and
nothing moved. apple/option/esc does not do anything. I went into time machine and
went to the documents there and it locked up the computer too. I went into finder and went to documents and it locked up the computer. I went into other areas of the hard drive and it locked up the computer. The funny thing is I can go on the internet, use programs, read email, and everything works fine. Can anyone guide me in
the right direction in solving this problem I am facing?

<Edited by Moderator>Sounds like itneeds some good basic maintenance and troubleshooting. Stop using this drive. Start trashing temp files, and off loading good files.
Everytime you freeze and do a hard restart, the chance that the journal, directory, file system and data are compromised increases, in spite of the "OKAY" from Disk Utility's repair routines it is not reliable. And leads to false sense of security. Disk Utility only checks the basic directory, not the files themselves.
It may be something like a damaged Finder plist/preference, or worse, but either you look for an easy fix, or just start cleaning up and moving files and system to a good drive and system.
You may have bad blocks on your drive causing all this. Or not. TechTool can detect bad sectors, but not map them out. (Deluxe is part of AppleCare; or Pro, commercial version).
Start using SuperDuper if you don't already, and Disk Warrior, premiere for disk repairs.
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
What you need to be doing is rebuild your system from the foundation up.
You may need to check out Data Rescue II demo from Prosoft Engineering to recover files.
I would begin by installing OS X on another drive, or restoring from TimeMachine. Create/name an "emergency" boot drive partition. Doesn't need to be that large. Keep it handy just for doing repairs and maintenance. Keep another as a clone of your working system and backup - in addition to TimeMachine.
You may want to start by erasing the drive (not just the OS volume) with a 7-way write (not just zero all, it does NOT do a reliable safe job mapping out bad blocks) and restore from TimeMachine. Or work with a new drive. -
Samsung ML-1450 Printer Driver for Mac OS 10.5.4
Hello!
I would like to get Samsung ML-1450 Printer Driver for Mac OS 10.5.4. The old driver does not work with 10.5.4, Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks.
SMalkanhttp://www.samsung.com/us/support/download/supportDownDetail.do?group=&type=&sub type=&modelnm=ML-1450&language=&cate_type=all&mType=DR&dType=D&vType=L&cttID=213933&prd_ia_ cd=&dispnm=ML-1450
It says it's for 10.2.4 or later or 10.4 (Huh?) but I just tried it and it worked.
I printed through an Airport Extreme Base Station, but I imagine it should work via USB (or ethernet). -
Samsung P3 Portable Hard Drive. Problems setting it up.
I am trying to find a Handbook for the "Samsung P3 Portable hard Drive". There is no documentation with product on how to set it up initialy.
Can anyone point me to a website where I might find this information.
Thanks.Google, Samsung? If it is like a normal external hard drive there is nothing to set up, you just plug it into the computer and use it.

How can an external drive cause my Internet to slow to a crawl and then fail?
I have two WD My Passport Ultra 1 TB USB 3 new drives. One I'm using for Time Machine and one for CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner). I have been trying to use them with my new MacBook Pro retina 13-inch.
For the last few days I've had weird problems trying to connect them via a USB 3 hub. I though the hub was the problem (because things seemed to be fine until I introduced a hub into the equation) and already returned one.
But now I see the same thing happening even without the hub.
It appears that one drive, when connected to a USB 3 port (it doesn't matter which port), even when it's doing nothing (I erased and and removed the CCC task), causes the Internet to slow to a crawl, and then stop. All connectivity ceases.
The instant I unmount and remove the drive the Internet springs back to normal speeds - over wifi about 110 Mbps.
Disk Utility says there are no problems with the disk. So does WD's only diagnostic utility. And the firmware is up-to-date.
The other disk, running Time Machine, seems to have no issues at all.
I guess I will return this drive. It could be subtly defective in some way. But what way? Why would an external USB 3 drive affect the Internet connectivity?
dougI came across this post while in search of the answer to the very same question only I am experiencing this problem when connecting to a USB 3.0 hub and nothing else. The resuling slowdown in my internet speed leaves me hanging intermittently between screens in Safari, sometimes indefinitely. When I remove the USB cable, normal speeds resume. Activity Monitor shows no undue load on the CPU. I did not notice this problem until just recently. Could this have something to do with the recent OSX patch.
BTW: I am running a 2012 15" MacBook Pro with Retina display.
Anybody have a clue as to what might be going on here?

Cloning drive causes Finder to crash when accessing various files
I have recently updated my Macbook Pro with a Samsung SSD ITByte.
I have used CCClone - all copied fine.
However I now have the problem that when I touch some files in my Finder, it casues the Finder to crash. This started with accessing the DropBox folder - I thought it was a problem with Dropbox, but then I synced to a new folder and it is fine. The I found that if I try and open a file in Safari, it crashes. Then if I now try and access the Hard Drive folder directly in the Finder, the Finder crashes. SO somehow files or folders are getting corrupted.
Am running Mavericks - latest update and everything else up to date.
Very mysterious.
All help appreciated.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -
Flash 9.0r45 causing slowdowns?
I seem to be experiencing a problem when using Flash content
on my Mac (specs below) upon upgrading to Flash Player 9.0r45.
After viewing two or three pieces, my computer slows to a crawl;
for example, windows and menus take an incredibly long time to
draw, and my dock zooming is choppy. When I first experienced the
problem (not knowing what may have been causing it), I went to my
Activity Viewer to see if an app/process was misbehaving, and I
found that WindowServer was taking anywhere from 70 to 90 per cent
of my CPU. It wasn't until yesterday that I discovered this
slowdown seemed to occur after viewing Flash content. Logging out
fixes the slowdown issue, until the next time it happens, of
course.
I've since downgraded to 9.0r28, hoping that will solve the
problem for now, but I'm hoping that some tech genius at Adobe is
able to figure out what's going on and is able to fix this problem
in the next release. I'm currently using a Power Mac G4, upgraded
to dual 1.2 GHz processors (PowerPC 7447). My system has 640
megabytes of RAM, and has ample free hard drive space. I'm
currently running Mac OS X 10.4.9 (8P135) and Safari 2.0.4
(419.3).Just a little update: downgrading to 9.0r28 has done nothing
to solve the problem. Unfortunately, I don't have access to any
older versions to see if they would work any better. -
A disk in the DVD drive causes a crash, machine will not start
I have a fairly bizarre problem, searched, didn't find it in here so... maybe I am special. Anyway. I have a 2.4ghz MBP with 4GB of memory. I got it in November (with Leopard). It has worked without an issue until I started tonight to give bootcamp a go on it.
Symptoms:
- Leopard boots up fine, logged in, nothing else open
- Insert any disk (DVD, CD-R)
- Leopard crashes
- continues to cycle through a restart but it keeps crashing waits 1 min, restarts, repeat
- Even tried a Leopard disk
Tried:
- disk utility to look at things
- can't load anything to check the hardware cause its cd based
What I did before it started going nuts?
I used bootcamp to partition the drive. This worked fine. Stuck the XP disk in and it read it fine. Machine rebooted to install XP, this was fine. Things went well until the XP install asked for a reboot. Then it restarts, disk failure. I eject disk and select OS X. Off we go, things are good.
I delete partition thinking something got screwed up. Tried again. This time when I put the XP disk in the thing crashes while in Leopard.
While I have typed this my machine has restarted a dozen times on its own. It is kinda funny to watch but *** has happened to it? I can't even re-install Leopard... no drive.
The DVD drive does spin up but after a few seconds it crashes. Any ideas out there?Maybe related...
Bought a 2.6G MBP yesterday, brought it home, booted up, everything great until I started loading my apps---CDs/DVDs would spin and spin, then eject---then Install Disc 1 froze the system. Can't eject the disc---onboard fans racing like jet engines and the keyboard area near the screen seemed very hot. Posted last night---someone thinks either bad optical drive or motherboard. About to go see a Genius now. For $3K+, this pretty much *****. -

It just stops there and won't continue to boot. Disconnecting the SATA cable from my CD drive and using a flash drive to boot fixes these issues, but I didn't continue with the install because I wasn't sure if I would be unable to boot with the drive plugged in later. This is my CD drive. It's connected to a SATA 6GB/s port on my motherboard. The drive works perfectly in Windows.
Also, if anyone knows anything about the USB error, help would be appreciated. That was the only error that did not go away after disconnecting my CD drive. I only have a keyboard, mouse, and WiFi dongle plugged in.
Last edited by nigh (2012-05-29 09:28:01)Your issue with the SATA disc drive is a problem with Udev. Namely that some SATA disc drives do not support 16-byte pass-through commands coming from Udev. See this post for a longer explanation and the correct workaround:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=895404
Other guides online will say to comment out parts of Udev's 60-persistent-storage.rules file, but I have found that to not only not work, but mess up detection of the SATA hard drives.
So, after, or during, Arch installation using your USB stick:
Add
options libata atapi_passthru16=0
to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
Add
FILES="/etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf"
to /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
Rebuild kernel image with:
mkinitcpio -p linux
reboot
To narrow down your USB issue, maybe you could try booting with only one plugged in at a time to identify which one has the issue. Do they all three work even though one gives this message? -
Using Disk Warrior on external drive causes MacBook crash
I work on MacBook System 10.6.7, I back up to LaCie external drive, which I partitioned so that one partition is only for backup, the other is bootable. On this partition I have a clone of Disk Warrior (4.1), to use on the MacBook .
Today I ran DW from the MacBook on the external drive for the first time, because lately it happens that the backup partition does not always appear in the finder (still performs back up though). I applied it first to the boot-partition, and it told me there were some problems. When it got to replacing the directory, the computer crashed mid way.
I performed Disk Verify on that partition through Disk Utility, and it said that it needed repair, and then that it did repair it. Checked other partition, no problem.
Tried again to rebuild directory for the external drive, and both partitions caused the MacBook to crash. I then booted from the external drive to see if it works, and ran DW on the MacBook, and had no problem there.
Anybody can tell me if it is the MacBook that caused the crash, or if the problem is with the external, and if there is anything else I can try to sort it out?

External hard drive causing finder to crash
The problem in a nutshell:
On 2 different occasions today, trying to open the hard drive folder (after not accessing the EHD for a couple hours) caused Finder to crash and my Macbook hung on shutdown - I had to unplug the USB hub or do a forced manual shutdown. When restarting the computer, my computer couldn't read the hard drive - I did find a way to fix that (see details below).
I don't know why this is happening in the first place or whether this indicates a bigger problem. Thus far, all data on these drives is backed up elsewhere, but I want these drives to be my backup (aside from DVD hard copies, of course). If anyone knows what may be causing this problem, I'd appreciate your help, thanks!
My system:
I have an early 2008 Macbook with OSX 10.6.8 and 4GB RAM.
Last week I bought two identical Hitachi DeskPro 3TB USB hard drives -- call them External HD A & B --, connected to my Macbook via a USB hub that has its own power source. The EHDs have their own power sources as well. All power sources are plugged into surge-protected power strips. (The EHD B is a cloned copy of the EHD A using backup software).
Each EHD is divided into 3 partitions.
In System Preferences, I did NOT choose to have the hard drive(s) go to sleep whereever possible.
Both EHDs run cool - I've never seen any sign of overheating.
Details of What Happened:
Both times, I was actively using my computer but hadn't accessed the EHD for a couple hours or so. Both times, only EHD A was present in the Finder. (EHD B was physically plugged in, but ejected from Finder, as is my ususal practice.)
Upon restart, I got a message that "a drive plugged into this computer cannot be read", giving me the option to Initialize, Ignore, or Eject. Restarting my Macbook (with one or both EHDs connected) didn't make a difference.
Neither drive showed up in Disk Utility, but they both showed up in System Profiler under USB, albeit with much fewer details than when the drives are showing up normally. The scanner attached to the USB hub has worked just fine.
Both times, the solution to the undetectable EHD problem was to plug in the drive's power source directly into the wall socket and the drive would promptly show up on my desktop. (It doesn't matter whether I plugged the USB directly into my Macbook or kept it plugged into the USB hub.) Once I do that, I can eject the drive, plug it back into the power strip, and it works just fine. I verified the drives in Disk Utility both times and they tested ok.I'm replying to my own post here since it's far to late to update the original message: To update: after more than 6 months, I can verify that the solution given at bottom of my original post (plugging the drive directly into a wall socket) has worked every time, both in the US and in Asia. I have no idea why this is so, just that it works.

External USB & Firewire drives causing system to stall
Hi there,
I have zapped the PRAM and reset the system controller.
I have two external hard drives, one USB and one Firewire, connected directly to the computer. I run into the frequent problem where either (or both) of the hard drives are keeping the computer from switching users, although they do seem to allow the computer to fully boot. However, if I try to change users, it will not allow me to get to the login screen without shutting the hard drive off. We also run into problems where the hard drives stall the system... just causes the whole computer to lock up. Any ideas?
Thanks! With a brand new iMac, make use of the free 90 day Apple support. In the US (800) APL-CARE (800-275-2273)

Virtual storage drive causes lightroom to crash
I use a service called Bitcasa, which is essentially just another cloud storage solution a la Dropbox, etc, except that it allows unlimited storage. To do this, it mounts a virtual drive on your computer called the "Bitcasa Infinite Drive".
When I open the import dialog in Lightroom, since my Bitcasa Infinite Drive is the first drive in my drive list, Lightroom defaults to trying to load the photos available for import from there. The problem there, of course, is that it is a virtual drive and it is quite large, which causes Lightroom to hang and eventually crash.
Just to be clear, I'm not trying to import from the Bitcasa virtual drive, it's just that Lightroom defaults to the first drive in the list in the import dialog so it tries to load previews from it and crashes. Trying to select the proper drive to import from (my sd card) is futile at that point because Lightroom has already stopped responding before I have a chance to actually click anything in the import dialog.
I am running Lightroom 5.2 on Windows 7 64-bit.hi there
ended up here as I was just googling around the very same issue. I'm afraid I've not much to contribute apart from the fact that personally I moved to drag-and-drop the images to import in the LR library (thus avoiding to ever press the import button), it seemed less of an hassle to me than shutting down bitcasa every time
somebody suggested this already in this bitcasa forum thread

Samsung BD-D5300 Blu-ray causing IP conflicts
I just bought a Samsung BD-D5300 Blu-ray player that allows a bunch of networking options including wireless and wired. I was using the wired option when I came across some conflicts with my network using a Linksys WRT350N v1. The Samsung conflicted with the Linksys's DHCP server. The blu-ray player turns off automatically when inactive. It was causing conflicts with my iPad 2, MacBook Pro and Motorola Atrix android phone whenever it got assigned an IP address. When I reset the router and my cable modem, it wasn't assigned an address for awhile, which fixed things, but as soon as it got an address again, it was caused conflicts by being seen as a LAN by my router. When it wasn't receiving an address, it got the automatic private IP address of 169.x.x.x. When I removed the connection with my router, the conflicts disappeared and my computers were able to access my wifi again. I just sent a message to Samsung about this and I'm waiting for a response, but I thought I would post my solution here in case someone else is having the same issue.
Set a static IP address on your blue-ray.

Boot drive causes screen errors on other Macs - but not mine...?
Due to a recent accident, my MBP's 160 gig hard drive was damaged and is now unusable. (I was backed up, that's not the issue.) I've since been using a 100 gig, 2.5 inch external drive (which I erased and formatted for use with Intel Macs) as a boot drive but it's close to full, and now that I don't have any major projects at hand, I'd like to send the MBP in for repair. The problem is, when using the external drive to boot other Macs (my Mini at work, my girlfriend's MacBook) the display is all mixed up - some parts are visible, others aren't. I can recognize certain icons from my desktop and Dock, for example - but everything's scattered all over the screen, and any kind of motion - dragging, hiding and showing the dock, opening windows - causes "ghosting" and "trails". There seems to be no way I can use the drive on other computers while I wait for my laptop to be repaired. Why does it only work on my MBP, is it something in the way I formatted it? (GUID partition scheme, SMART status, etc.)
:/I'm surprised by this just because I booted another Mac from an external drive with a clone of my system for a couple of weeks under similar circumstances and the Macs were not especially similar. G4 PowerBook which came with Tiger pre-installed and the machine-specific disks vs. G3 eMac which had come with Panther. I would have thought that MBP vs. MB would be, if anything, much less problematic than PB vs. eMac. I wonder how common such problems are.
I assume you've played with Display preferences etc.? Presumably, you use an external monitor with the mini. Do you know if drivers are available for that which you might be able to install. (I don't expect this is the problem but you might want to check just in case.)
