Samsung 24-inch display auto-dimming problem

Right out of the box 3 or 4 months ago, my Samsung 24 inch 2443 BW dims uncontrollably whenever I have a window open that has mostly black or other dark-colored background - say about 60% black; I can actually watch the whole screen and desktop - not just the window - brighten or darken in response to manipulating the images and/or background color in the window. This is on a G5 1.8GHz dual with a GeForce FX 5200, running 10.4.11. It doesn't depend on the ambient light. The System Prefs doesn't offer any way to control auto-dimming. I'm thinking it could be a driver problem, maybe related to the fact that I am still using 10.4.11.
Has anyone had a similar problem and found a fix or workaround? Thanks.

Problem solved! This morning (yes, I should've done this 6 months ago, soon after I bought the unit). As a prelude to returning the unit to Samsung, I finally took the 2443 BW back to my local Apple (specialist) dealer (not an Apple Store. They're independent and don't usually "do PCs", although they can if required). Of course I made sure I had some images that were guaranteed to demonstrate the problem. Their "service genius" watched the behavior for less than a minute and promptly fixed it. (Kudos! )
All that was needed was to "turn off" the "Dynamic Contrast" option from the Samsung's menu (MENU > Picture > MagicBright > Dynanamic Contrast), by selecting one of the other (static) options instead - I preferred the "Sport" option.
When I got it reconnected at home, I adjusted the contrast and brightness settings on the Samsung's Menu to suit me. I am also using the (Apple > System Preferences > Displays > Color > Adobe RGB (1998) Display profile instead of the one labeled "SyncMaster"). The SyncMaster display profile makes the screen look very washed-out.
This dialogue has definitely helped, by helping to pinpoint the monitor itself as the most likely source of the problem.
Cheers

  • Mac mini: Samsung 27 inch series 3 monitor problem.

Connecting HDMI(mini) to HDMI(Monitor) leads to poor text resolution (blurry difficult to read). Monitor only has HDMI or VGA. Will mindisplay to vga adaptor work and give a clear picture?
Have tried PC to moitor through VGA and gives clear perfect picture.
Answer would be most grateful as otherwise mac is much better than PC in all other aspects and would not wish to go back to PC

OK. So I have now tried LG 27 Inch E2742 Monitor as follows:
    1) Mini display to DVI-D : Picture good with decent text resolution
    2) HDMI-HDMI: Picture poor with poor colour and text resolution. This is not a calibration issue.
The samsung monitor 27 inch series 3 also has poor picture and colour and text resolution with HDMI-HDMI. Again this is not a calibration issue. It does not have a DVI-D input to test the minidisplay port.
So it seems the HDMI port is not working properly but the minidisplay one is ok as I suspected.
From reading the other threads it seems this is a common problem including those people that have taken their minis back for an exchange and experienced same problem.
Is there likely to be a software update to resolve this?

  • S205: Display Auto Dimming - How to turn off?

    Hey,
I must admit that I am in a real rage right now. I recently updated the AMD Vision Center, but now I am facing my display dimming itself when there is a black background somewhere. On the other hand it turns up the brightness, when there is a white background, which is really killing my eyes. Which intelligent person at lenovo thought about implementing this !"=)!"§$(U§=()$§$()§)$="§)( feature?
I can't see any option to turn this **bleep** thing off.
I would really appreciate it, if you could help me.
    Thanks...
PS: ah and Lenovo: This is going to be my last laptop I bought from you. Kthxbai.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi junkilop,
This feature is called Vari-Bright and can be turned off in the AMD Vision Engine Contol Center. Look for Power and then under PowerPlay.
Right there you will find Enable Vari-Bright, which gets enabled everytime you update the graphic drivers.
    Hope that helps,

  • Windows 8 Consumer Beta Auto-Dimming issue?

So installed Windows 8 last night (over Windows 7, since I'm not an avid user of Windows anyway). I fixed my trackpad issue, but my display auto-dims to a very low brightness for no reason. I have brightness control, but I'll change it, and less than 30 seconds later it will simply revert back to a low rightness. Is there a fix for this? Should I just go ahead and wipe it and do a clean install?

I think it's a problem with the ambient light sensor.
I had this problem and to fix it you need to go into the advanced power options and there is an option for auto-brightness. If you turn this off then the problem goes away.
On the system tray, click on the Power icon, and then Advanced Power settings, and the option is towards the bottom of the list.
I'm not on Windows right now so not 100% sure about the exact path, but its something along those lines.

  • Netflix keeps auto dimming on and off

Does anyone get display auto dim on and off (every like few seconds) when watching Netflix? (subtitles on)
I noticed this while watching Netflix. The display keeps auto dimming on and off during playback when you turn on the subtitles and during their change in dialogue.
I know that this may not be a Apple related issue but Netflix does not have an official user forum.
And for the record I have turned off the auto brightness option in the display settings.
    Does anyone else get this?

  • Auto dimming display/kb not working

I need some help tracking down where this setting is stored. Here is the situation...
I have 2 user accounts on a 2.4 Penryn MBP. When the computer is 1st booted the kb backlight is on and the display is dimmed to the same level regardless of the ambient light levels. When I log into MY account on this machine the levels remain and the light sensors are completely non-responsive even if I cover the speaker grills completely. I have both auto dimming check boxes selected in the display and keyboard system prefs.
Now, if I log into my wife's account on the same machine, everything works just as it did before. Auto-dimming of both the kb and display back to normal.
I have tried resetting the SMC, PRAM, trashing all prefs in my user folder, trashing prefs in the root library folder.
Where are these settings stored? Any ideas on how to reset them?

I really would like to know too where are stored the enable/disable auto-dimming display preferences.
This setting is not scriptable, not programmaticaly accessible (Obj-C), not even stored in any .plist, because I have logged filesystem events and nothing is written to the disk when this setting is changed.
It is really annoying ! I would like to access this setting by applescript for exemple. The only way to change it is by opening the System Preferences, then de Displays panel, then using the checkbox.
Does someone have any clue on this?

  • Auto dimming; gone?

    Hi all,
I could have sworn my 3gs originally had auto dimming feature.  Now, it is constantly displaying it's brightness and terribly wearing down the battery life.
I see that there is a "auto-brightness" option, but that does not control the dimming aspect.  I am running ios 5.01.  This must be a new bug.  Not sure when it started.  Anyone???

    Ingo,
You indirectly helped to solve my problem.  No, a hard reset of my phone was not the solution.  It's been suggested to me before and it failed.  The suggestion of the autolock feature got me thinking.  As you stated, the autolock will dim once you set the time for delay; but, of course, I didn't want to have to enter a passcode evertime I wanted to use my phone.  Simple, turn off passcode.  Problem solved.
    Thanks.

  • Screening Dimming Problem

    Hi everyone,
I find the "automatic dim display before sleep" to be very annoying. So naturally, I go into Energy Saver, and disable it. Ok, all is well, until I connect an external monitor/TV. Then even with or without the monitor connected AND the dimming check-box still deselected, my PowerBook's display defaults back to it's Auto-Dim setting. Argh, how can I fix this? Has anyone run into this problem?
I've tried the Terminal "pmset" option of changing the halfdim setting to 0 instead of 1, which is the same has using the Energy Saver option. Even after plugging and unplugging the ext. monitor, the screen dimmed after a while, and I verified in Terminal (pmset -g), that the value of halfdim was indeed still 0.
    Thanks,
    William

Hi William, have you tried creating a test user and testing the behavior in the fresh account? If it behaves in the new user then delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist then log out and back in or restart.

  • Dual 30-inch displays

I have a MacPro with an ATI Radeon 4870 graphics card with a DVI port and a mini Display port. I have an Apple 30-inch display now and have acces to another 30-inch Apple display. Can I use the current card to run both displays at once? I got a mini display port to Dual-link DVI adapter and the mini port did not work for either display, but both displays work on the DVI port. Apple is sending me a new adapter, but my question is, can I display one 30-inch monitor thru the DVI AND one monitor thru the mini port together? Apple does not know. The ATI site is not helpful. If not, what card should I use. Many thanks.

Yes, mDP can drive a 30-inch. What you already tried should have worked and I'm not sure why it didn't. At least you have another adapter coming, but the problem may lie elsewhere besides a defective adapter.
Write back with further details if the second adapter also fails to work.

  • Macbook to Samsung 32 inch 720p

Hello. I have a Macbook and a Samsung 32 inch 720p TV. I have recently moved it from one room to another and I suppose that because it was moved it did not keep the same resolution settings as before. Where it used to allow me a 1344x756 (interlaced) display it now no longer does. I was perplexed because my TV is not 720i so I guess I shouldn't have had an interlaced option but I did and it was perfect. I had to got to the number of recent items under the display in the menu bar to find that now i no longer have it. I have tried looking in the number of recent items even set it to ten but still no such option. My question is two part. First why did it change and second how can i get it back? Looked every where. Hopefully someone here can help! Im desperate for a solution. Thank you!

Hey, I think I can help sort of... I just bought a brand new Macbook Pro 13inch last week. I bought an display port to HDMI to connect to my tv and a mini dvi from my computer to the HDMI cable. I would never be able to find the resolutions I wanted. I would always be stuck with the 13inch resolution just blown up on my large 32inch SAMSUNG 720i or pi idk. This looked very odd and more or less didn't allow me to get the resolution I wanted to use my large 32inch like the apple 30inch displays...you get what I'm saying. Well I dl this program called insomnix and had it running. Then I put my computer to sleep manual and it bypass Insominx I think. Then in the morning I turned on my Samsung and was watching TV, I decided to flip on the laptop so I moved my bluetooth mouse and woke my computer up from sleeping. This allowed my tv to pick up the laptop"THE HWOLE TIME THIS IS GOING ON MY COMPUTER IS CLOSED THE SCREEN IS NOT ON AND ALLOWS THE SAMSUNG TO BYPASS THE LIMITATIONS ON SCREEN RESOLUTION I GET STUCK WITH WHEN MY LAPTOP SCREEN TURNS ON FORCING MY SAMSUNG TO ACCOMMODATE". I DK WHY THIS IS ALL IN CAPS BUT IT IS PROBABLY REALLY IMPORTANT TO THE WHOLE SITUATION.

  • Screen brightness and auto dim

    Hello everyone,
I'm just wondering why the screenbrightness gets reduced in dark surroundings with turned on auto dim even more than it is manually possible.
I would like to turn auto dim off and only control the brightness with the manual control but this does not let me reduce screenbrightness enough.
Does anyone have a good suggestion?

Thanks for your reply. But that's not exactly what I was looking for.
There is a big difference in how dark the display can be set when using the automatic backlight dimming. When turned on the screen can get to a very low brightness at night. It is not possible to achieve the same low brightness with automatic backlight dimming turned off.
I suppose that this might only be possible with a software change.

  • Auto-dim feature works in the opposite way

Hi, I have a HP Pavilion 17" laptop and I have two major remarks on the HP implementation of the display.
    1. The auto-dim feature works in the opposite way: it should be that when dark images appear the display produces more light and lesser light when whiter/brighter images are displayed. Now the display dimms its lights when dark images are displayed which makes that they are wayyyy bad to see!
    2. The auto-dim feature can be turned of, but is back turned on when the computer was turned off in standby mode allthough it says that it is turned off.... weird!
At work I have a Dell and there it all wors as it should !
So HP, please correct these flaws asap, thanks :-)
