Samsung 2493HM, Epson 2880 CS4 Profile Problems

Hardware

Epson 2880
Windows XP SP3
ATI HD 5670
Using DVI not HDMI
For months I've been printing using a photo lab with no problems.  I finaly replaced my old Epson R280 with a R2880.  I've loaded the icc profiles for the printer and Epson Ultra Lustre Paper, ran the Spyder calibration but am still getting prints that are one or two stops darker than the proof view using the icc profile.
I'm set to North American PrePress2, aRGB, No printer color Management, Black Point Compression, Show Paper Color, picked the icc profile for the paper at the quality setting I'm using (Photo or Super).
My monitor's calibrated to D65, gamma of 2.2.
I suspect the monitor is off and the printer is fine.  the monitor lists the contrast ratio of 20,000:1 and it normally outputs 400 cd/m^2.  So it is quite a bright monitor.  Other people I have sent images to that look fine on my display comment that they are dark on theirs.
And yes, adobe gamma is gone.
My ambient lighting is very low (my basement with a 13W 2700K Compact Flourescent) in a Luxo lamp but I judge proofs using my North facing window upstairs.
What steps should I be taking to verify the source(s) of the problem?

From an Adobe Print engineer.  Hope this helps.
He's got his monitor set to "as bright as the sun" brightness (as witnessed by "everyone else think my images look too dark.")
Turn down the monitor brightness and everything will work fine.

  • Epson 2880 Print Paper Profiles

    Hi Folks,
    I just bought an Epson 2880 printer and also downloaded some Icc paper profiles for it from Epson. On install(double-clicking) on the zipped files all but one of them went through and install process, and now show up when I select printer profiles from within Photoshop CS4. The other just unzipped a file that was put into my downloads folder and says, "colorsync" on it. Where should this Icc profile be placed so it shows up properly in my CS4 profile selections?
    Many thanks for any assistance.
    Jim

    John-Thanks, I thought that was where I should be putting them. After I wrote this note I put the icc profile into my color sync folder and it does show up from within PS 4 as it should.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Color profile problem after installing CS4

    OK.
    First, let me post these side-by-side comparisons:
    As you can see in Image 1 (the "before," left-side photo in each comparison), the colors and overall appearance are distorted. I've read things about gamma but it's all confusing to me. This is surely a color profile problem, right? The transition among pixels that involve colors of yellow and gray is rocky, grainy, and the flat out color is just wrong. Now this color problem affects pictures when opened in both Photoshop 7.0 and the standard Windows Photo Viewer. Meaning, whenever I open pictures in both PS 7.0 and Windows Photo Viewer (my default viewer), this color problem totally messes up certain photos and really damages my ability to edit. I'm an avid photo editor and it's imperative I have proper color display so that I can accurately edit. Keep in mind that certain pictures do not take on this error. When a photo is generally brighter, the distortion is basically invisible. It's photos that are dark or have dark portions in them that display the distortion.
    *Note: I took these before-and-after pictures with my camera, because screencapping would not work, since you all don't have the same color profile issue on your computer. That's the only way I can show you!
    HOWEVER, when I open photos in another standard Windows application, "Microsoft Office Picture Manager," the color problem is magically erradicated altogether. It shows photos as I've been seeing them all along, until I installed CS4 about two weeks ago. Before installing CS4, everything was fine and I had been using Photoshop 7 for years and have never had a problem. I'm guessing CS4 messed something up. It had to have. Just FYI, I uninstalled CS4, hoping it would reverse the problem. But still, the color issue persists in PS 7 and in my regular Windows Photo Viewer.
    Since images display their true form in Windows Office Picture Manager, I don't think I need to calibrate my screen. Or do I? I've read things about it, and to some people, it's not necessary. Right? Okay. I really hope someone can give some advice! Thank you!
    P.S. Here's the original photo. On my screen, it looks distorted when opened in photoshop or opened w/the viewer. However, here on Firefox, it's fine.

    You should try to familiarize yourself with the concepts of color management.
    It's kind of too in-depth a subject to walk you through from a cold start here...  There are a lot of good resources out there to help you get started.  For example, in just a few seconds Google turned up this:
    http://www.adobepress.com/articles/article.asp?p=1315593
    The one thing to remember is this:  There is NO quick solution, easy set of defaults, or direct answer to making your setup do what you want without your having to understand color management.
    People may tell you to calibrate your monitors, or use a particular color profile as a default, or whatever, and they may have good, solid reasons for telling you those things, but if you don't attempt to get your mind around color management it will always seem as though something isn't working right, or is simply magic, which will be frustrating to you.
    Here are some basic questions to ponder:
    What image color profile is your image carrying?
    Is your monitor a wide-gamut display and do you have a color profile set up for it?  What kind of monitor is it?
    What version of Windows are you running?
    Do you know the difference between a color-managed app and one that is not color-managed?
    Which of the apps you're using/showing above are color-managed?
    What are your settings in Edit - Color Settings?
    Take some time and do some research, get your head around the concepts, and it will all make more sense I promise you.

  • CS3, Epson 2880 - Dark Prints

    Hopefully some one might be able to help as I am a tad stumped with a problem of dark prints from CS3 on an Epson 2880.
    Macbook Pro with 10.4 Tiger
    I have a calibrated monitor
    CS3 setup with American Prepress colour settings
    Raw picture imported into CS3 with Adobe RGB profile
    So I edit the picture as required and then open the print window where I tell photoshop to manage the colours and select the correct ICC profile for my printer and paper. I then go to the Epson print driver and select the correct media type and turn off colour management.
    The picture that is printed is 1 to 2 stops darker than what is should be.
    Now the strange thing is if I use the Epson Print Plug-in the picture that it displays is generally dark like the print output.
    If I didnt know better I would say that another ICC profile is being applied to the picture as it moves either to the print driver or to the Epson Plug-in.
    If I check the picture in CS3 with proofing then I get a small colour change as expected but not the dark print that comes out.
    Any suggestions much appreciated as this is doing my head in.

    Please do a forum search. There are already at least two other threads on the subject of dark prints.

  • No Matte paper option in paper settings Epson 2880

    I have an Epson 2880. running with Lightroom 2.4 on a mac with OSX 10.5.7
    However when I try to select the Epson Matte paper option in print settings> paper settings , it's not there.
    I have loaded the latest Epson drivers and have got Premium Luster surface added but no Matte heavyweight. I can't select this in either 64 or 32 bit mode.
    I have the same problem with Photoshop. Now this isn't a major problem as I can use the Premium Luster as a alternative and it works fine.
    I have profiles for the Matte paper available, but it makes no difference
    I just wondered why I couldn't select the Matte option. It has been suggested that It wont appear unless I have the Matte Black cartridge installed, but I was of the opinion this cart was for uncoated stock, which I thought the Epson matte paper wasn't.
    Any ideas???
    John C

    John, you need to do two things.
    First, you need to insert the Matte Black cart. Whatever you may have heard elsewhere, Matte Black is not solely for printing on uncoated stock. It is for printing on whatever papers were designed to be used with Matte Black inks, whether coated or not. Enhanced Matte (a.k.a. Archival Matte, Ultra Premium Presentation Paper Matte), Velvet Fine Art, UltraSmooth Fine Art, Entrada, Photo Rag, etc. are all coated on the printing surface and are designed to be used with Matte Black.
    Second, you need to visit the Page Setup dialog box and make sure you have the appropriate paper feed selected. Otherwise you won't have access to all of the matte black-compatible media types, such as Velvet Fine Art.

  • Photoshop CC printing is dark on Epson 2880

    I just upgraded to PS CC, and when I print the image is dark. I use an Epson 2880. I have called Epson customer service; not resolved. I have the PS CC print settings as "Photoshop manages colour". Does anyone have a suggestion?

    Epson is having a lot of problems with their printer drivers on MacOS 10.9.
    Check with Epson for updated drivers.

    LR 4 only prints a blank page on Epson 2880. Print preview panes remain blank. Window 7 OS. Need help desperately!

    Bob
    Thank you for your kind consideration of my problem. Up until the software started to print blank pages the preview pane always showed the selected print within the selected layout. Something has changed. Lightroom will print to the JPEG file but only a blank page on the Epson 2880. I've been in contact with Epson support and an IT tech and they tell me the problem is with Lightroom. I'm at my wits end and thinking of upgrading but the glitch may carry over. Uninstalling and reinstalling and deleting the preferences file did nothing to rectify the situation.
    Thanks again!

  • Color profile problem/question.

    These two exports of the same file were taken on my spouse's D300s, and are good examples of a profile problem I cannot seem to solve.  This is the identical problem I also experience on the Nikon D700 and D3.  The following was exported with the "Camera Standard" profile, and notice the yellow sun reflection on the door panels:
    The following was exported with a xrite generated lightroom profile. Notice the better overall contrast, but also the horrendous unnatural yellow on the same door:
    This difference causes all sorts of distortion in natural animal hair that contains any red-orange.  I use these doors  because they are such a stark example.  Any attempts to correct with the WB will usually result in too much blue elsewhere.  Also I have created many test profiles under many light conditions (both manually and from LR), and they all cause this problem in all three cameras.  This is not a matter of one bad cameral, or one erroneously created profile.
    I have two questions:  Does this example show up well enough to see what I am talking about?   If so, can anyone speculate as to the problem or solution?  Even guesses would be appreciated since I am out of my own, and not expert in this sort of thing.   Thanks!

    George, thank you for this information. I have a couple of things for you to try and another question. The ColorChecker Passport color patches are small, so I would suggest trying to reshoot a calibration image with the ColorChecker Passport in the center and filling at least 1/3 of the picture width. In the image you provided the ColorChecker Passport is about 1/8 the image width and far left of center. I know, I know, it should not matter, but give it a try. This is what I'm doing to create camera profiles for all three of my camera bodies (Canon 300D, 600D, 5D MKII), and I have not had a single problem with "color matching" using this procedure AND what I will describe next.
    Concerning white balance procedure you say:
    Using the grey card of the same product placed just outside the subject crop.
    I assume you are referring to the large 60% reflectance white balance card on one side of the ColorChecker Passport, but you do not mention how you set white balance. I suggest using the LR white balance eyedropper tool with the smaller 80% reflectance gray scale patch on the ColorChecker Classic target side. This is the 2nd patch from the left bottom in your picture right next to the brightest 90% white patch. Two reasons for doing this! A higher reflectance patch reduces the influence of camera noise in the image with the LR 5 x 5 pixels eyedropper tool. Here's a LR forum post with a heated discussion on these issues (or lack thereof): http://forums.adobe.com/thread/854734?tstart=60 The second purely empirical reason is the "Classic" target side provides me with more accurate white balance than using the larger 60% card. Perhaps this is a defect with my ColorChecker Passport target, but I don't know.
    When setting white balance with the LR eyedropper tool I suggest taking at least five (5) samples of the 80% patch. I use the center, TL, TR, BR and BL corner areas of the patch. Do not use any reading that has a large variation from the others. Please remember that the eyedropper tool is sampling a very small 5 x 5 (25 pixels) area, and image noise or a target paint defect can give you a bogus reading. Write down the temp and tint for each of the five (5) readings, add them, and divide by five to get the "average" white balance temp and tint. Enter the temp and tint values manually into the white balance tool. I create a user preset for each profile which contains only the ColorChecker created camera profile and manually adjusted white balance settings.
    I would also suggest you check the readings of all six (6) grayscale patches for neutrality (R=G=B) using your new camera profile and white balance settings. I have found in some cases using the 65% reflectance patch (3rd patch in) provides the most neutral “overall” white balance setting for the six (6) patches. This is despite the fact it contains more camera noise than the 80% patch next to it. Again, this observation is purely empirical – I am not writing a scientific thesis! It works for me and hopefully it will get you closer to what you want.
    One thing I am going to do tomorrow is borrow a friends color checker to rule out the possibility mine is defective. It doesn't look defective, but the problem is so consistent.
    This is a very good idea! Having worked in a manufacturing environment for over 45 years, trust me when I tell you defective product from even the largest company ends up in the consumer’s hands. Please let us know what you find.

  • Constant IP Profile Problems

    Good Morning Everyone,
    I seem to have constant IP Profile problems where I have to keep contacting the Broadband Helpdesk to get the IP Reset every few weeks.  It seems to do it if the weather is bad (like over the past couple of days) or if i watch videos streamed from  YouTube.  I told the operator this the last time i called, but it was just dismissed and they just reset the profile.
    Last night everything seemed so slow, so i ran a speedtest and yep the profile has dropped again and has been set to 2mbps.  I connect at 8mbps and normally my download speed is around the 7.30mbps mark.  What could be causing this?

  • Unable to install Epson ICC printer profiles in Lion (access privileges message)

    I upgraded to Lion and cannot install Epson ICC printer profiles. When I try to install, the installation is halted with the message that I do not have enough access privileges for this installation. Yes, I am the admin (I checked, as I know this is a known issue). I have the current updates to the O/S and the Epson driver. Specifically, these are printer paper profiles for an Espon Stylus Photo R2800 printer.

    The ownership of the /Library/ColorSync directory and its contents changed in Lion.  You acutally do not have enough priviliges as admin to write to that directory anymore.  EPSON's installer does not have the ability to ask you for your password to escalate the admin privileges to root.  You should report this to EPSON and insist that they update their installer.
    There is a way to get the files installed, but it is pretty involved.  I will give you the general idea but USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.  There is a risk you could break your system and make it unusable.
    With those admonitions in mind, here's the general outline.
    1.  Go to /Library/ColorSync.  Highlight the folder and do a Get Info on it.
    2.  Under the Sharing & Permissions portion, give "everyone" the ability to Read & Write.  Then choose to have this applied to all enclosed items.
    3.  Run the EPSON installer(s).  The profiles will now install.
    4.  Change the ownership and permissions for all the installed items useing the Terminal--
    For the EPSON folder the command is 'sudo chown -R root:wheel path_to_EPSON_folder'
    For each and every item in the EPSON folder, the command is 'sudo chmod 644 path_to_item'
    5.  Open Disk Utility and Repair Permssions.

  • Issues with epson 2880

    Hi everyone -
    I'm using Photoshop Elements on a mac and I'm having trouble printing to my Epson 2880. It's forcing me to print from the back-end feeder, which may be correct for Enhanced Matte Paper. But in doing so the alignment of the page is off (less space on one side than the other) and the image does not begin to print on the page for a good two inches, pushing the rest of the image off the bottom of the page. I think this might all be fixed if I could figure out how to change the page setup in printer settings from "roll paper". It does not give me the opportunity to do this. Any ideas???
    Thanks,
    Amy

    you do have the option under page setup where you can set your margins accordingly.

    I used another profiles name, because I dont have the old one installed anymore, Youll have to be exact about the letters though.
    And from a prepress-standpoint Id like to point out that removing the profile as opposed to »Convert to Profile« seems a peculiar practice, though of course Your reasons for doing so may be valid indeed.
    You could try:
    var myDocument = app.activeDocument;
    if (myDocument.colorProfileName == "U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2") {
    // =======================================================
    var idassignProfile = stringIDToTypeID( "assignProfile" );
    var desc2 = new ActionDescriptor();
    var idnull = charIDToTypeID( "null" );
    var ref1 = new ActionReference();
    var idDcmn = charIDToTypeID( "Dcmn" );
    var idOrdn = charIDToTypeID( "Ordn" );
    var idTrgt = charIDToTypeID( "Trgt" );
    ref1.putEnumerated( idDcmn, idOrdn, idTrgt );
    desc2.putReference( idnull, ref1 );
    var idmanage = stringIDToTypeID( "manage" );
    desc2.putBoolean( idmanage, false );
    executeAction( idassignProfile, desc2, DialogModes.NO );

  • CS4 Crashing Problems - Questions

    Just curious in regards to all of these "CS4 Crashing" problems.
    1) Before updating to Snow leopard, did you people do due diligence by at the very least checking the S.M.A.R.T. status of your drives and do a Permission Repair first BEFORE updating?
    2) Did you make a clone of your working perfectly Leopard disk, or at least do a current (minutes before) Time machine backup?
    3) Did you check first which 3rd party extensions such as those by Unsanity (FontCard), YouControl(Font), Growl, etc. that will NOT play nice with Snow Leopard yet until they are updated (if ever?)... and pre-update delete them?
    4) Did you check to make sure that all of your fonts have been disabled and those that are NOT specifically from Apple, are removed from the User Font folders... and NOT set to load at startup?
    Now after all of that... did ya still "freely" and without a gun to your head, update to Snow Leopard... a brand spankin' new (dot.zero) OS release and expect absolutely NO bugs: small, large or just inconvenient for the time being?
    And now your whining here?... and complaining to Apple?
    Have any of you considered reverting to your clone of Leo 10.5.8 until certain issues (yours) have been fail-safely fixed?
    For the record, I did a straight-up SL update on a 2.16 CoreDuo MBP, and a 2008 8-core MacPro with NO problems! Everything working fine in 32-bit and 64-bit (MacPro), including even FreeHand under Rosetta.
    NOTE: check your fonts!!! Whenever something crashes here or at any of my clients unexpectedly, font and/or font cache corruption has been the main culprit, now for over 20 years(!)
