Samsung 640 GB/7200 vs. WD 500 GB/7200 vs. Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB/7200

I'm looking to upgrade my early '08 Macbook Pro HD to one of these drives:
Samsung 640 GB/7200 - HM640JJ
WD 500 GB/7200 - WD5000BEKT
Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB/7200 - ST95005620AS
640 GB or 500 GB is fine. In addition to the standard productivity stuff, I do some coding and occasional video and sound editing. It would be nice to cut down on video editing times, but I don't want to significantly impact battery life (i.e. by more than 30 min or so) when just coding. Also hoping to avoid something noticeably louder.
Has anyone tried the Samsung 640 GB - HM640JJ -- any thoughts on it versus the others I mentioned? The Momentus XT sounds interesting, but it doesn't seem to do anything for write and sounds to have an occasional glitch.

OWC doesn't sell that model. They do sell the two others.
There are some positive reports on the HM640JJ from NewEgg MacBook Pro owners: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152237

  • Lenovo T61p and Seagate Momentus 7200.4 POST problem in UltraBay

Two different T61ps.  Mine is a 6459-CTO model.  Two different Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB drives.  System boots fine, even with a second hard drive installed in the Ultrabay SATA adapter, most recently a Samsung Spinpoint 500GB 5,400rpm drive in mine, but before that 320GB and 200GB drives.  No problems with any of those drives.
Install a Seagate 7200.4 drive in the UltraBay adapter though and turn the system on, and the system won't complete post.  The hard disk activity indicator stays on solid.  The drive activity light on the UltraBay stays on solid.  And the system doesn't leave post.
Unplug the UltraBay and the system boots fine.  The drive can be used if plugged into the system via USB in an external USB/SATA case, and appears to work fine as far as I can tell in this mode.
I have updated the BIOS in this T61p to the latest and the problem persists.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You might try limiting the data transfer rate to 1.5 Gbits per second by setting the jumper if you have one.  That's the limit that the UltraBay adapter is designed for.  Unencoded that limit would be about 1.2 Gbits per second.  The 7200.4 has a very cool internal maximum transfer rate of 1.23 Gbits per second, which might explain the intermittent booting issues.
Hope this helps.  If it does, a report back before Newegg restocks this drive would be useful.

  • I ordered Seagate Momentus 7200.3 320GB 7.2K 2.5-inch SATA HD...

I just ordered a new Seagate Momentus 7200.3 320GB 7.2K 2.5-inch SATA Hard Drive ST9320421ASG - Brand New OEM. What I want to make sure (in case I need to cancel the order) is that this will be the same as the one that came with my Unibody Macbook Pro (it has the same model number...but does Apple customize these in any way?)
    Thanks!

Yeah, mine is enabled too. Not that I want to do this...but do we have the option of disabling the motion sensor? If so, I'd like to know how .
PS: I wound up ordering the Seagate ST9320423ASG SATA Hard Drive because the other one was an older model. Pretty much the same thing though.

  • Seagate Momentus 7200.3

    I just put a Seagate® Momentus® 7200.3 in my 2.4 Macbook. It's brilliant!
Very easy to change and is soooo much faster! Photoshop opens in about 2 seconds!

Size and interface is a problem. Most are around 15 mm thick and most use the Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface. I don't even think they're actually meant for mobile computing. These are 2.5" enterprise hard drives meant for applications like blade computing. They consume at least twice as much power as most 7200 RPM SATA laptop drives and likely run hot.
There are even some 15,000 RPM 2.5" drives.

  • Does X200 support Seagate Momentus 7200.4?

I just bought a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 harddisk. I can see the name of the harddisk in BIOS but it seems that I could not use the harddisk to boot up and load the windows.
I have tried using the harddisk in my desktop and it worked perfectly. I wonder why the harddisk does not work in X200.
    Thanks!

    newbider2003, welcome to the forum,
have you attempted to install an OS on the drive? The flashing cursor says to me that you possibly cloned your old drive, maybe using Ghost? If this is the case you need to provide more information about what you have done.
If I am wrong, you don't need to look at this Lenovo tip.
    Members will need more details.
    Thanks

  • 2.16GHz C2D MacBook (White) + 7200.2 Seagate Momentus SATA = O.K.?

Does anyone know if a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 SATA 2.5" HDD is OK to run in the newer Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz MacBooks? I don't see any 7200rpm drives listed as available Apple upgrades for any of the MacBooks other than the MacBook Pro series. I'm thinking this is probably do to a cost reduction value. Does anyone know if there are any technical issues which would prevent one from installing a 7200rpm SATA HDD in the current shipping version of the MacBook? I have had very solid performance increases running this HDD setup in my Intel Mac Mini and would like to do the same thing to my new MacBook unless it is somehow "bad" for the system. Thanks all!
    -Dave/XJ

It probably isn't listed yet because the drive probably wasn't available when the specs were written. The drives are coming out faster than anyone can keep up with.
That drive should work ok. I saw it for sell at quite a few vendors for MacBook hard drives.

  • MacBook and Seagate momentus 7200?

Can you use Seagate momentus 100GB SATA 7200 harddrive with macbook?
Can't find the clear answer, anyone?
    -J

Got the 100GB since day one, and it's been fantastic (aside from it dying six months on, however Seagate replaced it quickly). There really is a difference in certain situations. I have a white macbook with a stock 5400 drive, and the black model with the momentus boots faster and loads some apps quicker, such as microsoft office.

  • Seagate Momentus 7200.3 in nx9420

I purchased a Seagate Momentus 7200.3 (ST9320421ASG) hard drive for my HP nx9420 laptop, but I have some problems with Windows since I installed this hard drive. The problem I have is that somehow files seem to be corrupted all the time. I've installed Windows several times, but each time when I'm installing all the applications I need it won't startup anymore. The errors I get are different each time, like CorruptFile or CorruptRegistry.
Is it a problem that this laptop only supports SATA 1.5 and the hard drive is SATA 3.0? I can't imagine because the installation of Windows never has any problems. Also I ran the hard drive check in the BIOS, and chkdsk without any problems.
There is a jumper setting on the hard drive to run in SATA 1.5 mode, but on the website of Seagate it clearly says that's only for factory use.
Does anybody have experience or ideas about this problem?

Leo this is a SATA hard drive and there is no issue with the BIOS and the hard drive size. Your advice is not helpful. BIOS hard drive size issues are confined solely to IDE drives, not SATA.

  • Sudden Motion Sensor / Seagate Momentus 7200.4

    All,
I am trying to check the Sudden motion sensor on my macbook pro unibody 2.8. Reason being i am a seagate momentus 7200.4 500gb (p/n ST9500420AS) drive and i want to make sure it is on. because I dont hear the drive park when I move it.
I go to terminal and do the following
When the command line appears, type sudo pmset -g and press Return.
Type in the administrator password when prompted and hit Return. This command queries the computer for the current setting of the Sudden Motion Sensor, which you can determine by locating the ams entry (in Mac OS X 10.3) or the sms entry (in Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5) and looking to the right to determine its value. The default setting is "1" (turned on).
But it shows no setting. After I type the password it shows a blank line. How come I can not see this setting?

The SMS is not a part of the drive itself, it is a separate component normally located adjacent to the drive. It consists of a three-axis accelerometer that reports any motion of the computer to the Operating System. If it exceed a certain threshold, the O.S. causes the drive to park itself, presumably in anticipation to an impact. Some general purpose utilities, such as [MacPilot|http://www.koingosw.com/products/macpilot.php], allow you to enable or disable the SMS, there are also utilities specific for this.
An interesting application is [SeisMac|http://www.suitable.com/tools/seismac.html], which reads the info produced by the SMS and displays it as a graph, turning your Mac into a seismograph.
As for the operation of the system, I've found that if you close the lid on your portable and while it is updating the sleep image (before the LED starts pulsing), if you shake it, you will hear and feel the HDD coming to an emergency stop.

If you need to extract the drive's content you can remove it and install it in a $10 USB enclosure. It will be readable by any recent Mac.

  • Freezing with Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB

    Hi,
    I have a MBP 07 (2.16 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo) and ordered a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 with 500GB.
I´ve installed Snow Leopard with all the possible updates and I´m having a freezing problem.
Every about 15 minutes I see the beachball for about 2 seconds and the whole system freezes, then the harddisk makes a very strange sound and everything works fine.
So I sent back the harddisk and got a new one, but the same problems with the new one. This is very strange and very bad to work with it.
I´ve tested the harddisk with the harddisk tool, but no problems.
    You can help me?
    Best regards,
    Marc

    Hey Raw,
I posted above you on 11/21, and I actually decided to give my Momentus 500g (with no shock protection, AS only) a go a day or two afterwards. It's been fine for me, no problems at all. I have a mid-08 MB Pro 17" 2.6ghz.
While I know that could change, and I'm willing to see what happens (thanks to SuperDuper and Time Machine backups ready to clone back to my old HDD if necessary), I think that following the steps of setting up the drive properly via Disk Utility (Erase, partition, GUID, etc) is something that makes a difference.
Now that I type this I hope I don't get jinxed. I hope you can find a way to make it work for you. Good luck!

  • Seagate Momentus 320GB 7200.3 vs 7200.4?

Does anyone know what the difference between Seagate 320GB 3rd generation and 4th generation is?
Also, it seems not easy to find 7200.4 on the internet.....
    Any input? Thanks!!

I was told that 7200.4 is "greener" than 7200.3, which consumes less power. Other than that, the read/write performance should be very "similar". Some said Seagate's hard drives have lots of problems.... so it's hard to tell.
I have the same MBP like yours. I have been thinking about Seagate 7200.3 320GB or WD Scorpio Blue 500GB... can't decide which one I want to upgrade. In terms of capacity, I think 320Gb is plenty enough for me. I care more about it's performance, the temperature or vibration it may produce.... there are different opinions regarding these issues...
Also, our MBP is said to have SATA 1 interface, while those drives on the market currently are SATA 2 interface. I am not sure if we need to install the jumper on the new drive before we start using it.... that's another thing I want to find out the answer...!!
