Samsung 830 256GB SSD $182.00 Free Shipping.

B&H Photo has the Samsung 830 Series (MZ-7PC256B/WW) 256GB 2.5" Internal SATA III MLC Solid State Drive (SSD) for $182.00 Free Shipping. Tax in NY only. [Compare Prices]
This is one of the fastest consumer SSD available today (520MB/s read and 400MB/s write). This uses Samsung's MCX 3-Core Controller paired with the toggle NAND Memory, which is faster than asynchronous and is on par with synchronous flash drives. It is one of the better all around performing SSDs currently available

There are a number of factors that can influence the speed of an SSD.  So simply specifying your SSD along and no other mention of harware (besides that it is connected to a SATAIII port) is probably nto enough information to really get you anywhere with this question.
Edit: BTW, I dind't know that page existed... I also didn't realize how much my Kingston Hyper 3k kicks some ass.  Also, my Mushkin mSATA Atlas 120GB does pretty damn well for being on a SATA II port.  I'll have to do the tests a couple more times in order to get an average to contribute.  But inital test went quite well.

Heh I just clued in that the utility is AS-SSD. I ran it, but I dont know if I believe it. Read seems fine but write is way slow.

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011), Samsung 830 stopped being identified

OK I give up, i have been using a Samsung 830 256Gb SSD in my MBP for almost 2 months and all of a sudden it stopped working. I have installed the SSD into a PC and it identifed fine. I installed Windows 7 on the drive and then installed the Samsung Magician 4.0 Software. Checked that it has the latest firmware, did a secure wipe and MBP still wont identify it.... Anyone able to put me out of my misery.
Oh also I have put a 500Gb Hard Disk in the MBP and the drive get identifed fine if its in an external caddy connected via FW800, even able to install OS onto the drive when external but when i put the drive back internally it wont work....
    Thanks in advance

It's probably a bad SATA cable - you don't, by chance, have a 2009 model, do you? They're notorious for SATA cables that will work with a HS but not a SSD. ANyway, I'm pretty sure that's your problem. You can order a new cable from ifixit, PowerBookMedic, etc.
    Good luck,

  • W520 and Samsung 830 SSD

    Hello:
After several issues with a Mushkin Chronos DX 480GB I finally returned it.
Now I'm thinking in buying a Samsung 830 512GB SSD and it a 7mm disk, my question is if it's necessary to buy the notebook kit or not of this disk.
    Without notebook kit:

    With notebook kit
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147139
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

The "spacer" is needed in the W520 if you install it in the primary drive bay. The rubber rails are sized for the 9.5mm drive if you initially received the 500gb HDD (the 320gb HDD is 7mm so no spacer is required). The Samsung SSD is first mounted on the drive carrier, then the spacer is placed on top of the SSD, then the rubber rails are placed on either side. The cobination fits snugly in the drive bay.
I recommend the Newmodeus HDD caddy if you are going to use the former HDD in the UltraBay. That caddy does not require the carrier and comes with all needed screws to secure the drive.

  • Why is the SSD on 2011 Macbook Air much slower then 2010 Macbook Pro with Samsung 830 SSD (less then half the speed) ?

Why is a laptop designed from ground up to use flash slower then a older laptop with a upgraded SSD from a 3rd party?
My old MBP is more then 2x the speed (read/write) with a SSD upgrade (Samsung 830) then my Air.
Any fixes or mods to boost the flash speed of the Air?

We would like you to show us how to do that.......Especially when the Samsung 830 will not fit the Air.....Please don't say duct tape....
Ok, scratch that idea.  Let me think for a moment,,,em,,,em.  OK I got it.  Sell both units and buy a mid Macbook Air 2012 version.

  • Install a samsung 830 SSD in my macbook pro 2011.

I am trying to install a samsung 830 SSD in my brand new Macbook pro. Whenever I install it and boot the mac I get three beeps.
When I put the old HD back in it workes fine. The SSD workes fine on a windows machine.
I have seen other macbooks with this SSD work just fine.
    What could be the problem?

The samsung SSD comes with a very handy USB cable so I hooked it up to my Imac and repartitioned the disk.
The SSD works without problems on the mac too apparently.
Unfortunately the Macbook still gives me the three beeps when I put the SSD back in.
This is quite frustrating, both the SSD and the Mac are brand new.
If I cant solve it myself which do I send back? The Macbook works fine with the original disk, the SSD works fine in any other PC.
I will try to clone my existing OSX to the SSD and let you know if it worked.
Even if that worked I still would not be confident everything is fine.
The last thing I want is to find out my Macbook is malfunctioning 2 days after the warranty is expired. (wouldnt be the first time )
Thanks for the help so far!

  • Installing a SSD Samsung 830 Drive on my 520 - Problem with Recovery partition

    Hello,
I am installing a 128GB Samsung 830 SSD on the W520, and i've put the original 50GB HDD on a HDD bay replacing the DVD/CD. bay.
I did a system recovery on the HDD, to put it on its original states. Then I used Acronis True Image HD to clone the HDD to the SSD. I have the main partition on the SSD along with the Lenovo_recovery partition. I then install the SSD on the HD slot, and start the PC. No problem till there. It starts, and the machine works fine.
I then do a system recovery from the HDD, and the recovery process goes to the end, but when the system restarts, I have a crash and it asks me to introduce the windows recovery disk. But I cannot starts anything anymore.
If I reinstall the 500GB HDD, it start no problem.
Any idea? Thank you for your help!

Really? Then how did you get the Samsung SSD in there to begin with. Look, you got two choices here: 1. Return the SSD for a refund, or 2. Find a Windoes PC & update the firmware.
Why you'd purchase an SSD, to use in a Mac, whose firmware can only be updated using a Windows computer, makes no sense to me.

  • Need help installing Samsung 830 SSD on MacBook Pro 13"

Hello everyone, my MacBook Pro recently crashed a couple weeks ago and I tried to get it working but no luck! So I figured it was the perfect time to make an investment in SSD and check out how it is.
So I bought a Samsung 830 SSSD 128gb. I installed the hard drive and inserted the Mac OS X disc and booted up my MBP. Once I went through the installation, it asked me where I would like to install the OS on but my SSD didn't appear. Can someone please help me? I am not too savvy with computers.
As of now, I only have access to my PC so someone please help me  :( Thanks in advance! :)
    -David

OK, you have an original installation disc (usually a gray disc that came with your Mac)?
Boot from the Install disc. You should have the option of either selecting Disk Utility from the main menu or from a "Utilities" menu at the top.
    Open Disk Utility.
You should see a disk with a strange name. Select it and choose "Erase" with the Format as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and a Name such as "Macintosh HD" (or whatever you'd like to name it. Just select erase - no need for a secure erase or anything.
Once you've formatted the SSD you should be able to quit Disk Utility and continue installing the system on the newly formatted drive.
Give it a shot - call back with any problems as I'll be up all night...

  • Boot up time with Samsung 830 SSD? - MacBook Pro 13" 2.9GHz Mid2012

    Hey everyone,
Just got my first mac ever! Snagged a pretty nice deal on a MacBook Pro 2.9 GHz 13" Mid2012 model by getting it refurbished.
I immediately cloned my hard drive using CCC and installed a Samsung 830 SSD (256 GB).  I believe I did install it correctly as using black magic speed test I put up some pretty good numbers --> 400 MB/s Write and 490 MB/s Read.
However, the boot up time seems a bit slow for a out of box MacBook Pro considering I upgraded the hard drive.
I was clocking in around 40 seconds... Is that abnormally slow?
I know its kind of silly looking timing the start up of your computer... I just expected faster, and this is my first hard drive installation... I hope I didn't mess up!
Thanks for your help in advance,
    Weston

    A bit simplifying :
there are two parts in boot process - one-before spinning thing, other - spinning thing to desktop.
First part is hardware inits, you can not speed it up. It is for sure longer for your MBP than for her - its normal, more hardware and it is more sophisticated so longer init.
Second part depends on HD (SSD) speed.
Say so - I have M4 SSD and second part is 1 to 2 spins until login window. Should be more or less same for you.
If it is not so - probably something is not good with filesystem and some config files, most probably due to cloning instead of install. Reboot from recovery, repair drive (first - drive as a whole, second - boot partition), then reboot permissions. reboot two times as normal. see what'll happen with timing.

  • Kernel panic - trying to install a Samsung 830 ssd

    Hi everybody,
please forgive me for my poor English.
I'm trying to install a Samsung 830 ssd with an optibay on my MBP early 2011. The ssd works fine, and I get a Sata 3 speed connection.
The first problem I found was that Disk Utility wasn't able to initialize it! "Posix error: i/o error" or "unable to locate memory".
So I inizitialized it with MacDrive on windows xp on another pc.
Here comes the second problem: when I boot with my ssd on the optibay there's a kernel panic, but when I boot with the superdrive everything is fine. So what can I do? Thanks for your help!

There's an update: I uninstalled Parallels. Then I connected the ssd to my mac with a sata usb cable, and everything worked fine, I initialized it and I tried to copy some files and it was ok..
So I put it into my optibay and booted Osx, this time no Kernel panic!
But now there's a new problem: when I try to copy files or create a folder on the ssd I got error -50 can't complete the operation.. Both with finder and muCommander.
So what shuold I have to do now?
    I'm getting a little upset..

  • X220 Won't boot Samsung 830 SSD

    I have a Lenovo X220 laptop with a 320GB Hitachi hard drive,
and it works just fine. But I decided I needed more speed,
so I bought a Samsung 830 SSD for it. I cloned the entire
X220 hard drive to the SSD (using a USB external case and
HDClone4), and everything looks fine on the SSD (when viewed
with Partition Wizard on another machine while the SSD is still
in the USB enclosure). But the SSD will not boot in the X220!
It starts, and in fact it gets as far as saying "Starting Windows",
and then moving the four color dots (of Windows 7) around a
little bit, and then it momentarily flashes the dreaded
white-on-blue screen (so fast you cannot tell what it says),
and then it enters the recovery-menu screen. Bummer!
I called Lenovo tech support and they essentially told me to
GET LOST because they "don't support" me installing an SSD
(even though the X220 User's Guide shows exactly that).
I've used HDClone4 several times in the past (to clone hard
drives for my stable of Lenovo T60 laptops), and it seems to
always work just fine. So why is this not working for my X220
and Samsung 830? Note that, while I don't expect Lenovo to
certify compatibility with every flea-bit SSD on the market,
this Samsung 830 is highly regarded by many well-respected
reviewers (Tom's Hardware, my favorite, in particular).
Has anyone here heard this song before? Is there something
peculiar about the X220 and/or the Samsung 830? I'd sure
    appreciate any helpful advice. Thanks.

BIOS version is F.21, operating system is Windows7 Profesional 64bit.

  • Request: AHCI Support for Samsung 830 SSD on gx660r

    Hi Svet,
i have bought a Samsung 830 SSD for my gx660r notebook, but i realized that it is not recognized in the BIOS in AHCI mode.
The MSIHQ Flashing Tool says the following about my BIOS:
    Mainboard:  MS-16F1
PCB Version:  To be filled by O.E.M.
    BIOS Version: E16F1IMS VER3.0J
    BIOS Date:  28.03.2011
    EC-FW Version:
Could you provide me with a BIOS that works with my Samsung SSD?
    I already donated some bucks.
And can you give me a hint how i can rescue my system in case the update fails?
As far as i know, my notebook does not have m-flash (at least i've seen no reference to m-flash), is there another way to restore the backup bios in case something goes wrong?
BTW: Im using the latest version of the flashing tool, but it does not offer the mode 2 (where i can point to a single bios file). Can you provide the modded bios as a zip/rar file so i can use it with mode1?
    Many thanks,
    Sascha

Nope, in a case of bad flash there is no recovery.
Else if everything goes fine, you can restore original BIOS if you want to do this for some reason.

To prevent using the wrong flasher[which can kill the notebook],
Tool automatically Disable Mode2 when notebook is detected.

  • SSD Samsung 830 - HDD

I used Norton system ghost to copy my 320GB HDD to my new 256GB SSD.
Now I have this 7200RPM HDD sitting on my desk.  What to do?
Plugging it in to a USB port with the cable adapter is not a good idea - it shut my machine down.  I think because it is also labeled as a "C" drive and bootable my machine does not like it.  Machine booted back up fine but I am not doing that again.
I would like to format it, plug it in a USB port with the USB adapter cable, and back up my SSD to it.
How do I do this?  Can I put it back in the laptop, boot to it, and then format it while it is the system drive?
I am not an expert, thus this question.  Kent

Fixed.   Followed the instructions found here: http://www.ehow.com/how_7146188_reformat-lenovo-laptop.html
I placed my HDD in the machine and rebooted from CD with a set of W7 disks I own (since my Lenovo set I made one week ago was corrupt upon first use).  Got to the part in the W7 install where I had the option to delete the existing Q & C drive and then format the HDD.
Then exchanged the HHD with the SSD and rebooted from the SSD.   Plugged in the HDD via USB and it was recognized and drivers installed.  Next, went to Computer Management, Disk Management in W7 and using New Simple Volume Wizard (found guidance online on various sites for settins) set the HD as Drive D and am now ready to start backing up my SSD onto the HHD.
Now need to buy an HDD enclosure to put my HDD in for longer term use.  Kent

  • New 256GB Samsung 470 Series SSD Heading My Way

Yesterday, I purchased the above-referenced SSD on Amazon. I am aware that it is a SATA II drive, but its consistent performance is what led to my purchase of the drive.
I believe I have done adequate research on the subject, but I am looking from some confirmation on the following two statements:
    1. Although TRIM support is not enabled in Lion for non-OEM SSDs, the Samsung 470 Series SSDs have built-in TRIM support that operates independently of the OS. Therefore, I don't need to use a program like TRIM Enabler.
    2. The Samsung 470 Series has built-in garbage collection.
Please let me know if both of the above statements accurate, and if there is anything else I will need to know or do (aside from installing the actual SSD).
    Thanks!
    Kyle

I have learned a little bit more over the weekend.
It appears I'll need to enable TRIM support manually. I have read that some people enable it briefly, then disable it. I don't really understand why, however. Nobody seems to have any issues after they have enabled TRIM support.
So, the question is, should I leave TRIM support enabled?
