Samsung 840 pro ssd into my MBP 8.2

I am putting a Samsung 840 pro ssd into my MBP 8.2, I have my backup hard drive in my dvd place. Is there an easy way to get a clean install on my new drive?

I would recomend before you install the new drive to go to Apple's website and create a Recovery USB

Once you do that you can install your new drive and then you should be able to install OSX from the USB drive.

How to update firmware on Samsung 840 pro SSD?

I just bought a samsung 840 pro SSD and am trying to look for a way to upgrade the firmware to the latest version. Apparantly it is only possible via windows, has anyone found a way to do it on a mac? I received my SSD yesterday and there was a firmware update released by Samsung on the 13TH December but i am unable to update.

This is why I don't recommend Samsung SSDs to Mac owners. Crucial, OCZ, SanDisk, Intel, and Plextor (I think) have firmware updates that can be performed on a Mac. While I wouldn't get a SanDisk or Intel for other reasons, it wouldn't be because of inability to update the firmware.

Can I install a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB into the new iMac late 2013?

1)   Can a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD be installed in the new iMac late 2013 model? (My plan is to remove the existing 1TB HDD and replace with the Samsung SSD)
1.1) I have heard somewhere, even though it will fit, Apple's logic board firmware will pick up the non-apple product and render the iMac useless until original hard drive is reinstalled.
1.2) If it will work, will I loose my warranty on iMac? Note, the SSD will be installed by an Apple authorized workshop.
2)     Can 2x 2.5 sata drives be installed in the iMac?
2.1) I know the iMac only has 1x SATA and 1x PCIe slot, but can one not install a PCIe - SATA converter and also a 2x 2.5 drive bay in the place of the existing         3.5" drive?

I checked on the Samsung website and the 840 Pro is OSX compatible and should work in your MBP.

T420 won't boot with new Samsung 840 Pro SSD

Hi all
I seem to have a failed brand new SSD. Before I RMA it, please help me spot my stupid mistake
I've just used Samsung data migration to copy my C drive to a Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD as usual.
I went into device driver, and set the SSD to cache writes, so the SSD was working then.
I removed the 320GB SSD, installed the SSD and rebooted.
After the BIOS flash screen, the system halts with a funny symbol on the screen and a flashing cursor.
It responds to Ctrl Alt Del. but doesn't get as far as testing the DVD drive.
After replacing the SSD with the HDD and rebooting, all is fine again ...
The BIOS shows AHCI mode, and the SSD and contents (in a USB3 drive caddy) are visible and readable.
I can't use Samsung SSD magician because it won't see the SSD over USB (clever!), so can't work out how to upgrade firmware.
This is an i5, 8GB, 320GB machine with 1600x900 screen, with XP Pro 64-bit.
What gives?? Others here have posted with working 840 Pros in a T420, so I think it's compatible.
Could this be a SATA2/SATA3 thing or AHCI? I can't see any SATA2/3 control in the BIOS - does it just auto-negotiate?

Hi woothoot,
I'm not familiar with the Samsung data migration tool. Is it actually cloning the drive, or just copying files and settings?
With ThinkPads, it is usually recommended to have the target drive installed in the laptop and the source on the external connection. Doing it the other way sometimes results in a non-booting drive.
Can you rearrange things so that you do the clone op with the SSD installed in the T420?

Does my MacBook pro Early 2011 supports an Samsung 840 pro SSD drive???

I want to improve my macbook pro 15" early 2011 by installing a ssd drive on it! I just want to no know if a samsung 840 pro with 512gb will be compatible with my model. Its a serial ATA 6 gbs model.

If you install it in the main drive bay it should work just fine. If you install it in the optical bay, replacing the dvd drive, it may or may not work correctly.

T440s is killing Samsung 840 pro SSD's

Hi all,
I have a new T440s, bought with HDD. As I wanted to use a reliable SSD, I bought a Samsung 840 pro, which I already have running in another system. This is when the problems started. In a German Forum several users report similar problems, so I just wanted to provide a summary here, so that maybe the international community can help. I consider myself as an experienced user, have built various PC systems over the past years and have currently a desktop system running with Samsung 840 pro. Here are the details:
I have installed Windows 8.1 (various times, first clone from HDD and later after recurring problems, complete clean install from Win 8.1 DVD), Bios set to UEFI only + Intel Rapid Start disabled before installation.
The issue is now that with the SSD I am getting constant HDD errors (visible in EventViewer), so that usually after a few hours of operation the OS gets damaged to the point that it cannot boot any more. I should mention that the same system is running stable with the original HDD. First I thought it is a defective SSD and I got it replaced by Samsung. However, with the replaced new SSD I am facing the same issues. Earlier this year I fixed a problem on a desktop PC with 840 pro where the symptoms looked similar. In case of the desktop system, the issue could be fixed by replacing the SATA cable (which is obviously not an option on the T440s).
And yes, I am using the latest SSD firmware, BIOS update, Lenovo drivers. Now, the issue is that I do not seem to be the only one with these problems. Other users in a German Thinkpad forum report similar problems and not only on Windows systems but also on Linux installations (one even got the mainboard replaced by Lenovo and it still did not solve the problem).
I contacted Lenovo support and they replied that they are only supporting original Lenovo SSD's. I must say that I am really disapointed that my brand new system from a renowned manufacturer consistently does not work with one of the most widely used SSD's. Currently, some users in the German forum report that they are having more luck with Samsung EVO SSDs. However, after this experience, I really lost confidence in the T440s. If the design should have problems with Sata 3, I don't know if I can trust this notebook in a business environment.
Any comments/suggestions highly welcome.

First of all (In the US at least), there are up to 5 different OEM SSD drives to choose from (depending on what base model is selected), with what in addition looks like 3 different variations (regular?, OPAL and edrive).

I have the tools and taking off the battery cable once inside. I do have to backups one is a Lacice Porsche 2TB(works with Time machine) and CrashPlan+ on line cloud that is always backing up.

My macbook doesnt work anymore because the HDD gave up. I now ordered the samsung 840 pro ssd. My mbp doesn't start up anymore and all I can see is the file boz and a ? mark. I have the CD that came with the macbook. Is it hard to install the software or should I just take it to apple and let them do the job?
Also, I only bought the 128 GB since I cannot afford the 256g. I have a seagate 1 TB external hardrive. Can anyone please tell me what to do to set all downloads and other documents to save in the external so I am not using all the 128 g

I installed a Samsung 840 PRO SSD in my Mid 2010 MacBook Pro. It’s not hard to install the software onto your SSD, though it will take some time to do so. I don’t know how much Apple would charge for that service, so the time vs. money tradeoff is something that you’ll need to decide.
If you decide to do it yourself, what you’ll need to do is to boot your MacBook Pro from the grey installation DVD marked “Mac OS X Install DVD” that originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro; to do that, hold down the C key as you power up. Once you’ve booted up from the DVD, you’ll need to run Disk Utility to format your SSD as “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)”. Once it’s been formatted, you can then install the version of Mac OS X that is on that DVD, either Leopard or Snow Leopard. Once your MacBook Pro’s original version of Mac OS X is installed on the SSD, you can then reboot from the SSD, and optionally install the iLife applications from the “Applications Install DVD” — the other grey installation DVD that came with your MacBook Pro.
Next, you’ll need to upgrade or update your OS to Mac OS X 10.6.8, which in turn will allow you to access the App Store, so that you can redownload Mountain Lion for installation. Once you’ve installed Mountain Lion on your SSD, it will then have the Mountain Lion recovery partition installed also.
To ensure that your downloads and documents are saved to your external Seagate HDD, be sure to choose a location on that drive whenever you download a file or save a document. Each application that you use will probably need to be set to download/save to your external HDD, but each of them should remember that external HDD location for future downloads/saves.

I presently have CRUCIAL M4 256MB SSD. It is there for past 2 years no issues. Now I need more room as am planning to create windows partition with VS2012 with TFS. I am planning of Samsung 840 pro 512gb. My questions are as follows:
A) Does this work on Mid 2010, 15inch 2.66GHz with 8GB Ram (above configuration) MBP?
B) Will it be faster than my CRUCIAL M4 256GB.?
How much it will cost.? who is the reliable retailer in Singapore.?

installing a replacement internal drive into your MacBook Pro is a straightforward procedure. Just make sure that you have the requisite tools (a #00 Phillips screwdriver and a T6 Torx screwdriver) and that you discharge static electricity on your person before touching anything inside of your MacBook Pro. Be gentle with the internal SATA cable when disconnecting it from the old internal drive and reconnecting it to the SSD, since the internal SATA cables can be fragile.

Issues with Samsung 840 pro and MacbookPro mid 2012.

I got a Samsung 840 pro 256GB SSD a few months ago. I installed it into my MacbookPro mid 2012 and it worked with no issues for two months. One day the drive pretty much crashed on me while I was using it. I tried connected the drive with a SATA to Thunderbolt adapter and the SSD worked with no issues. This led me to think the issue was with my mac, so I reinstalled the HDD I was previously using. I experianced no issues with this drive installed. Simply put, the SSD does not work if ONLY if it is connected to the internal SATA connection. I wound up RMAing the drive back to Samsung and recieved a new one today.
I installed the drive and attempted to install OS X without success. After more troubleshooting I determined that, the brand new drive is experiancing the same issue: it does not work ONLY if it is conneced to the internal SATA connection. I spend an hour on the phone with Samsung, they have not heard of this problem happening. I called an independanta Mac repair shop and they told me it was the SATA cable (this is incorrect because other HDD's work). I went to the Apple store but they don't care about you unless you're willing to shell out big bucks or you have AppleCare.
Somebody help!

One possibility is that the model you have is intended for use with a SATA III 6.0 Gb/s interface whereas your computer only supports up to 3.0 Gb/s. If the new SSD is not downward compatible then it will not work properly.

Any known issues installing Samsung 840 EVO SSD in a T540p 20BE?

After reading the "Hardware Maintenance Manual" for the Thinkpad T540p, and the installation guide for the Samsung 840 EVO SSD, this looks pretty straightforward. But I thought I'd be careful and ask here if there are any pitfalls I should watch out for.
I'm planning on using the Samsung Data Migration software to migrate everything from the old drive to the SSD.

Yes it is. Its wizard will guide you through the process, but just remember, that booting from your newly cloned drive, you must boot it from within your computer, not through an external USB connection.
If that isn't working, you have done something wrong, but it's no problem as your original drive can be put back into the machine and the cloning program run again with different settings if required.

Samsung 840 Pro 128GB VS. Intel 520 120GB

I would like to buy a ssd for my laptop, to do some video editing projects on it, in my country I found this 2 ssd, looking around I've found great reviews about each so I really don't know which one to buy, I have a crucial ssd and it's great but sadly the person who sold it to me doesn't have crucial right now, which one do you think will be better for my purpose.

I really like the Samsung 840 Pro 128GB choice for a OS/programs drive for a desktop PC. It sounds REALLY small for a laptop unless you will have a 2nd drive on the laptop as well.
For a single drive laptop the 500GB Samsung 840 (non-pro) is pretty nice and cost effective vs. the 840 pro 512GB model. For the larger SSD sizes the write speed of Samsung's 840 series is not nearly so crippled as their smaller (120GB) drive is.
If 500GB or larger SSD choices are clearly out of your price range, then the Seagate 750GB Momentus XT 7200 rpm laptop drive would be a good choice.

Z77A-GD65 + Samsung 840 Pro Slow Windows 8.1 Boot time?

I've recently installed Windows 8.1 in UEFI mode on my new Samsung 840 Pro drive.
However, just for fun I started testing my boot time.
From the moment I press the Power button I'm in Windows after 25 seconds, it seems to hang on the A2 code for about 6-8 seconds every time, however, not on restart.
A restart is much faster and only takes about 10-12 seconds.
However, I was looking in Youtube and most guys there boot their PC with inferior SSDs than mine in about 15-18 tops.
I was just wondering if a 25 seconds boot time for the fastest SSD today is considered normal?
Also, is it related to my CPU? I'm using a 2500K, I assume most of the videos I saw were of people with Ivy/Haswell bridge CPUs.
In my BIOS I am using the Windows 8 features and "Fast Boot" is enabled, "Secure Boot" is disabled.

Found the issue! Turns out my new WD 3TB Caviar Black drive is causing the hang. I disconnected it and my PC booted within 12 seconds since I pressed the power button.
I have the 3TB drive connected to a SATA3 port on my Intel controller.
Any thoughts?

I had this same problem with trying to install Windows 8.1 from the ISO I was able to download from MS. I eventually got the installer to work. Two ways to do this.
1. Set your BIOS boot option to Legacy + UEFI
2. Change your boot device to the legacy form of your USB flash drive
That should make it boot.
or
1. While at the shell command prompt
2. Shell> Fs0:
3. fs0:> \EFI\BOOT\BOOTX64.EFI
Or type whatever the Flash device is labeled as

How do I format new Samsung 850 Pro SSD in my 2012 Mac Mini

So my 12 year old is frustrated by the slower speed of his mac mini, and with some of his birthday money and my expertise (which I hope to borrow from you and pass off as my own), I've purchased a Samsung 850 Pro SSD (256 GB) and am going to install it for him. We've already increased the memory.   I've also purchased the OWC data doubler and am planning to install the Samsung with the original Mac hard drive.
Having watched the install videos several times I feel fairly competent to do that, but my question is what to do then to access and make the most use of the SSD so everything (1) works and (2) runs as fast as possible?    For example, first, do I need to copy the OS to the SSD and delete from the Mac hard drive, and then somehow set up the SSD as the main drive?   And do I do this before I install the SSD or can I do it after?   Finally, what do I need to do to ensure that the computer uses the two drives optimally thereafter for maximum speed/performance. You can see my level of expertise from my questions.
Other than the memory and the SSD install, we're not planning any other modifications, and his use of the mini is pretty vanilla (games, videos, etc.).    Any step-by-step help for a relative novice in this area (me) would be much appreciated.
My Mac's specs:
Mac mini (late 2012)
Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 16 GB
OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

1. Partition and format the SSD.
2. Install OS X on the SSD.
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
How to use an SSD with your HDD
If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu. You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed. When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.
