Samsung Continuum Froyo Update Problems

Hello,
Verizon pushed out the update to Froyo Android 2.2.2 to my Samsung Continuum earlier this month (about 15 months after they said they would when I bought the phone). The download and install went smoothly for the most part, but there are some minor issues and a couple of significant ones. The update definitely reduces battery life. I'm not a heavy phone user, but now my battery life has dropped from a couple of days to less than one. Now I have to keep a cord or spare battery handy.
Also, switching from mobile data to wi-fi, which used to be perfect and seamless, has now become hit and miss. Three-fourths of the time it works, but the rest of the time it just won't connect to the wi-fi network. This is really annoying, especially at home where I have a great signal. Once the wi-fi connection fails, most of the time you need to manually go and search for the network. Prior to the update, the phone would almost always recover from a dropped wifi network connection automatically.
The most significant issue, however, is the disappearing text messages ( SMS). The Continuum has a small secondary screen below the main screen referred to as the ticker.  Apps will automatically move to the ticker as you bring another function into focus ( very handy when you are using the phone to talk or surf on the web and the music plasyer controls drop down to the ticker, for example).  Also, notifications ( SMS, RSS, caller ID) appear in the ticker when another app is on the main screen.
Unfortunately,I have seen several times since the Froyo update where you are using another app (like the web browser especially) and an incoming text message will appear on the ticker (like it should), but then not appear in the text messaging app when you go to reply to the message. It simply vanishes after displaying on the ticker. Since the ticker truncates longer messages, this is a bad thing.
This is a SERIOUS bug and needs to be fixed immediately.
So has anybody else noticed this, and is there any chance Verizon will ever fix it?
Thanks,
Tony

I have noticed the empty home screen issue.  I usually lock the screen, wait a few seconds and unlock it.  Most of the time that returns things.  It's a little annoying, but not as annoying as not getting the update was.
I have actually seen my battery last 20-25% longer since the update.  The phone has been more efficient in that area.  I had heard that was one advantage of the Froyo update (and have heard Gingerbread is even better, but we'll never see GB), and have experienced it.
I think I've noticed a couple of times where texts have not appeared in the app after having shown up in the ticker.  I usually have my phone on my hip, in a holster, and on vibrate, so I may not have seen all of them.  I haven't had people tell me I didn't reply to their text, though.
I'm almost afraid of any bug fix for these few issues, as sometimes those fixes create more bugs than they fix.  It seems that some of these larger issues may need a trip to the store to settle, as there may be other hardware issues (faulty or failing internal hardware) that may be causing them.  They may also require a factory reset, as the update may not have been perfect for your phone.

  • Problems with dropped calls and no reception on Samsung Continuum

My mother and I both purchased a Samsung Continuum in late March 2011, and have experienced the same problems with the phone.  The device drops at least 2-3 calls per day, often on the same conversation; we have not found that location or time of day makes a difference.  The phone freezes up frequently, even if no apps are running in the background.  We lose our 3G network reception frequently, and cannot access our texts, emails, or the internet.  The screen saver kicks in even when we are actively dialing a number, or typing in a text message.  The overall performance of the phone is also poor, and it is quite slow much of the time.
We have raised this issue several times with a representative at one of the Verizon stores, but he states that he can find no problem with the phone, and that these issues may not be covered under our insurance plan.  None of my friends with non-Samsung phones are having the same problems with phone reception and performance.  I am aggravated enough with these issues that I am considering reactivating my old Blackberry, which worked like a charm.
I am not upset that my phone has not been updated to Android 2.2.  I just want the phone to perform as stated, and not fail at its primary function:  making and receiving phone calls.  I am not certain if these problems originate with the phone, Verizon, or Samsung, nor do I care.  I just want to resolve these issues as soon as possible, or I will have to look at other alternatives.
    Thank you.

If this doesn't work...now what??? I have a useless $400 plus piece of unreliable junk. My Motorola Razor was ions more reliable than this phone...very, very sad but true.
What carrier were you using with the Razor? AT&T? Same area?

  • Rss Feeds on Samsung Continuum not working after Verizon Update

I have been wondering for awhile why my Samsung Continuum will not recieve Rss feeds when I subscribe to them. I have read very little on why or how to fix this. This sucks as those Rss feeds are really useful. My bro's and my phone (both the same phone) have this problem. I have not reset my phone. Anything would be appreciated!

I'm having this same problem. Any word on if a patch is coming? I would be happy with Verizon just admitting their update was worthless and gave us an update letting us know they are actually aware of the issue rather than saying they dont know whats going on and offer to replace a perfectly good phone because they wont listen to their customers. Simlar to what raphana said...for what we pay they could have atleast tested the update before putting it live!

  • Hey Verizon / HTC / Google  Please fix the caller ID problem, post 2.2 Froyo UPDATE.

Hey Verizon / HTC / Google  Please fix the caller ID problem, post 2.2 Froyo UPDATE.  This is a major Problem.

I have provided some steps below that may help with the Caller Id issue you are experiencing.
Try completing a soft reset on the device. A soft reset would be powering the device off and pulling out the battery. Once the battery is removed, place it back in and power the device back on.
Dial *228 and send. Once dialed, listen for the recording to prompt you for option 1 and select option 1. The phone should complete its programming within a minute.
Ensure you are using the area-code and 7 digit number format (ex. 9999951212)
Try removing the contact and re-adding it.

  • Problems with Samsung Continuum. Anyone else?

So I purchased the Samsung Continuum in June, and at first everything seemed fine. But after just a month or two the phone became very slow and would freeze often. I had to factory reset the phone several times, but the problems persisted. Shortly after that the phones alarm clock began to malfunction and would shut itself off after a few minutes or several hours. This is a problem because I rely on my phone as my primary alarm clock. My phone also freezes when I try to use the camera. When the phone freezes, it resends random previously sent text messages. Is anyone else having all of these issues? And will Verizon do anything about them. It is very frustrating.

Wow, sounds like alot of issues with your Continuum. My wife has one, so I am familiar with it. As far as the phone and freezing, what apps do you have installed? There are a number of troubleshooting techniques you can try. When you did the factory reset, did you re-install all of your apps? I just saw on Verizon's site that the Continuum does not support Safe Mode, so you may have to start removing apps one by one to see if there is an app that is causing your problems. Are you running any kind of advanced task killers or memory managers on your phone?
I would think the only thing Verizon would do is to replace the phone with a Certified Like New Continuum if it is within 1 year of your purchase. After that, you are limited in what they can/will do.

  • Problems with Samsung Continuum

I am having several issues with my Samsung Continuum:
    1.  I use the email application for a yahoo and gmail account.  There have been several times where the app does not pick up messages for a significant period of time.  I typically do a soft reset of the phone every could of days to and it seems to reset this issue, but it doesn't seem normal that I should have to do that.
    2.  The other day a duplicate gmail account showed up in the email app.  I tried to delete one of them and when I did, both accounts were deleted.  I re-entered the account information and again it showed up twice.  I have re-deleted and re-added several times now and have not been able to solve the problem.
    3.  The music player application starts running on its own and drains the battery.  I use the task manager multiple times per day to stop this application.
Any suggestions as to how to solve these issues?
    Thank you/

These are all significant problems, but they're all resolvable. Please send me a personal message with your mobile number, a phone number where you can be reached and a good time for me to call. Thank you!

  • Samsung Continuum Issues

I have been experiencing several annoying problems with my Samsung Continuum over the past (2) weeks:
Ticker:  I try to select/deselect preloaded feeds, but I keep receiving "Server connection not ready.  Please try again" messages.  Also, ticker has not updated in several days.
WeatherBug Widget:  Displayed clock time is one hour ahead of actual time.
Bluetooth:  The phone sometimes locks up in Bluetooth mode and I have to remove the battery in order to reset the phone.
    Phone information:
    Hardware version:  i400.0.6
    Firmware version:  2.1-update1
    Baseband version:  S:i400.0.6V.DL17
    Kernel version 2.6.29
    Build number:  SCH-I400.DL17
The phone has not been rooted.  I tried performing a factory restore, but the problems persist.
Can anyone help?  Do I have to get a new phone?

I'm having the same weather/clock issue and so is my husband. We just got our phones today.
Please check the GPS settings on the device, go to Menu>Settings>Location & Security>Make sure Google Location Services is checked on. Once you have GPS on, power the phone off then back on.  Also long press on the widget and move it to the trash bin at the bottom of the screen to remove it, then re-added it but long pressing the screen then going into widgets and selecting the one for weather.
    Thank you!

  • Android 2.2 Froyo Update

I decided to email Samsung yesterday asking about the Froyo update. Here is their response:
"Thank you for your inquiry, Samsung Mobile does not comment on rumors or speculation. With regard to the Froyo update, we recently issued the following statement: “Samsung feels it is important to make the Android 2.2/Froyo upgrade available only after we feel that we can give the millions of U.S. Galaxy S owners a simple and reliable upgrade experience. Due to the complexity and unique functionality of each Galaxy S device, we are performing additional testing and are working to make the Android 2.2/Froyo upgrade available to all U.S. Galaxy S owners, including the Samsung Fascinate, as soon as possible.
Thank you for your continued interest in Samsung products."
I'm anxious like everyone else to get this update. I have a friend who has the Samsung Vibrate, once you have see what all the Froyo update has to offer it's hard to be patient.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/15/galaxy-s-android-2-2-froyo-update-begins-to-trickle-out/Based on breathless reports we're seeing on Twitter and in the XDA-Developers' forums, it would appear that Samsung has just pushed out the official Android 2.2 Froyo update for its Galaxy S as promised. Our Nordic friends are the first to report seeing the build I9000 JPM update in the latest version of Samsung's Kies PC software. It's early days though, so do let your fellow i9000 owners know how it goes in the comments below. List of changes (including GPS fix) listed after the break.
Update: We've just been handed the official press release for the Andoid 2.2 Galaxy S update. Indeed, Nordic countries get it first (starting mid-October, aka, "now") before it's "gradually rolled out to other European markets, Southeast Asia, the Middle East Asia, North America, Africa and rest of the world." Hey, it takes time to update 5 million handsets.
[Thanks, Gustav F. and Chong Shau Poh]
Android 2.2 JPM for the Galaxy S reportedly adds the following:
    Android 2.2 JIT compiler
    Adobe Flash Player 10.1 compatibility
    New Android Market with auto-updating
    Speed improvements
    Pinch-to-zoom homescreen flyover
    Improved default keyboard
Quick links to "GPS" and "Auto rotation" toggles on notification bar added
Slightly different graphics and transitions with app drawer and default icon dock
    Colored icons in settings

  • Samsung Continuum Issues - Picture messages NOT displaying embedded images + Android 2.2?

I recently purchased the samsung continuum a few months ago and have had a difficult time with the following two issues:
    The phone is NOT rooted.
    (1) Picture Messages are not displaying as embedded images in my message notifications. All i see is "Message Size and the word downloading.  The picture is only 10K, so it should download relatively fast.  The image does not appear in my gallery either.  Please help?  Where is the image and why can't i see it in my message.According to the notes in SCH-I400.DL17, this issue should have been resolved.
    (2) How come the Contiuum has not received an update to Android 2.2?  The Fascinate and Continuum were both released at the same time and the Fascinate received the update.
    Here is my phone specs:
    Phone information:
    Hardware version:  i400.0.6
    Firmware version:  2.1-update1
    Baseband version:  S:i400.0.6V.DL17
    Kernel version 2.6.29
    Build number:  SCH-I400.DL17

I don't understand how the Fascinate has Android 2.2, but is discontinued and the Continuum is still being sold new. What is up with that Verizon? I like the Continuum but would like to see it upgraded.  I still have over a year till I can get a new phone too. Very confusing.
Sorry I can't help you with the picture messages as I don't have a solution.

  • Samsung Continuum Music Player- 5.1 Channel error message

I have a Samsung Continuum.  Recently, when I use the Music Player application, when I press the 5.1 stereo sound I get an error message that states "5.1 channel can only be activated when sound effects are off."  I have no idea what sound effects it is talking about nor how to turn them off.
    Little help?!

No, no, the headphones work fine elsewhere.
I know of no simple electrical reason why specific things like dialogue would be cleanly squelched while background music would remain loud. I find it highly unlikely that it would be due to some problem with the wires---if it was, engineers would manufacture bad wires to perform blind source separation.
The problem is not a mere reversal of channels, but that when the headphones are plugged in the dialog vanishes. I am assuming that there is some bogus default assignment of 5.1 channels that I am unable to change. If you'd like, I can retry with another set of headphones.

  • Viewing pictures in emails on Samsung Continuum

I just recently got a Samsung Continuum and I really like it. However, I ran into a problem today. I got an email with pictures attached. How do I open them on the phone?

what e-mail program is your mother in law using? If Outlook Express, switching to Thunderbird should solve the problem. Outlook Express has been discontinued.

  • Froyo update for the AC100

Thanks Toshiba for the Froyo update for the AC100. Bring back the AC100 Forum, please.
Don't give up on this kind of product.
Some have complained that the keyboard layout has changed after the update. Use CTRL+space to change it back. Sometimes restarting the browser helps.
Youtube works now in the Android Browser and Dolphin. Videos and Flash content plays.

Another reason was if I received a new GMail message, then the Mail app takes the unit out of standby.
So I turned automatic checking for mail to "Never".

Mail app btw has an option to check mail in standby, as i understand it should not wake it up or should put it to standby after check. And here we found the real problem. Device never go to standby itself, so if it was woken up by some even intended activity it will eat your battery until you take care of it.

Not all is lost regarding the AC100 even though it took a serious hit with all the bad reviews when on Android 2.1.
Now on 2.2 a lot of issues are gone. Give it some promotion, run a forum, etc. Nice unit and you did a great job getting
    a 2.2 upgrade out.

Agree, next should be Android 3.0, Google market and listening to your customers. Btw, you know that Nvidia released Tegra zone app to promote games for Tegra platform. It's really amazing, but i'm tired to download apps trough my phone... AC100 is a *%50* of tegra based devices available on the market and it DOESN't have an app from nvidia to promote it?!
Stop killing your own product. Be a bit flexible, it's great hardware, don't destroy it with attempts to create your own walled garden. The major part of Android system is a huge Google Android Market.

I could get my Fascinate to update at all since I owned it.  Even the techies at Verizon could not get it to update.  On saturday(3/12) they told me that they had to replace my phone before had hardware issues from the get go!  How many phones would be exposed to replacement if the froyo was pushed to them!!!!!

There were a bunch of phones that came from Samsung that would not update OTA correctly. Verizon has a list of the ESN's that were affected, mine was 1 of them.
A potential Froyo update would have nothing to do with this issue, but it is always a concern with OTA, does it cause more damage than it helps... That's why they need to test it before sending it out. Look at the result they had with AT&T and the Froyo update... They had to pull it from the servers because of issues....

  • Minimize Droid X Issues After Froyo Update....

This has been verified as being the best way to stop a number of the issues that has developed after doing Froyo update, the system seem to keep the 2.1 app and settings during installation process and this seems to cause a number of incompatible issues with a number of devices.... Follow this process after completing Froyo Update to avoid problems..
Follow these settings during restore to avoid issues being restored automatically.
    1. Uncheck "Back up my data" under Settings/Privacy
    2. Click Factory Data Reset/Reset Phone
    3. After reset is complete only Active Phone but do not input Google Email information
    4. Once phone is at homepage go back into Settings/Privacy and make sure the Automatic Restore option is unchecked, even if grayed out, activate "Back up my data" and quickly disable "Automatic Restore"
    5. After being sure that the Automatic Restore option is off it will be safe to log into Google and you can continue installing preferred apps and custom settings.
This process will stop all applications and settings from restoring automatically and restoring original issues that usually resolve a number of issues.

Is there a point where you will want to turn this back on?
Yes, your contacts is saved on Google's account and they do not restore to device until you log into your Google account. The phone uses this information to verify your device for person information.
I didnt place the step to run Backup Assistant and place backup password, this will complete the restoring process of contacts.. And about the couple of a contacts not backed up mean that the backup app wasnt run after contacts being added, its wise to always run Backup Assistant as soon as you change or add a contact.

I don't recall explicitly "accepting" this 2.2 "Froyo" update.
I woke up one morning and found it installed on my DroidX.
I was on a business trip with 50% battery left when it occurred.
That was certainly not the time I wanted to do a major update.
That issue aside, I noticed my phone under 2.2 would frequently freeze for about 15 seconds when I was doing basic things.
I did a soft reset (took battery out for a while), and the issue seems to have gone away.
My "Backup my data" setting was (had always been?) unchecked, so I don't plan on doing a hard reset.
You are not being forced to do a Factory Reset but since the update has been released a number of user reported issues with device and a large amount of their issue was coming from settings and apps from 2.1 not being removed during update process and this process has resolved a number of users issues and from the last part of your post you are having similar issues.  But a hard reset is your decision.
Also the "Backup my Data" isn't the issue completely, its the Auto Restore option, it runs at startup automatically if checked or not, this is why the instruction reported to enable "Backup my Data"and then disable "Auto Restore" option.
