Samsung Fascinate

Verizon's version of Samsungs new Galaxy S line, Fascinate, is due to hit the streets running on Sept 9th, so why isn't there any information about it on Verizon's website??  I'm super psyched about this phone being that my contract is up on the 8th, so I'll be first in line to pick one up on the 9th.  Just can't understand why Verizon won't at least post any "upcoming info" on this phone on their website.  Even Best Buy allowed you to start pre-ordering this phone last week, so what's the delay with Verizon?   I've been reading about Samsung's new Galaxy S series for months now as their putting out a Galaxy S model for every major wireless provider.  Verizon just happens to be the last one to put their model on the market.  There just doesn't seem to be any hype regarding this phone and I don't know why.  Sure, it's no Droid 2/X/Incredible "killer", but it's an awesome phone with some awesome specs, just don't know why Verizon refuses to say anything about it, when it's launch date it only a week away.  Regardless.....I can't wait!!!  Is anyone else looking forward to this awesome smartphone from Samsung??

That sounds about right, in regard to the Incredible. HTC makes poor quality products, and their customer service is terrible at dealing with problems that come up. When I contacted them about the last major issue I had with the Eris, they gave me 3 completely different stories from 3 reps! "The phone always did that," "Yes, that changed with our MR4 update, but it's intentional," and, "Don't blame us, Google did it, they changed it in 2.1 and we have no idea why your phone didn't work that way until you got MR4."
Despite them all saying that the problematic function was "intentional," and thus had nothing to be fixed...one rep described what the proper function was supposed to be--which is the functionality I was asking to get back--before saying it was working right. O_o It also looks pretty bad for them to claim the problem was intentional: after MR4, pictures in text messages auto-close after 5 seconds. To claim that's intentional is to claim that their coders, and the managers who approved the functionality, are inept.
Personally, I try to push people away from buying HTC products after this experience. Verizon, however, is usually exceptional when it comes to customer service--but because they're the ones who roll out the updates that manufacturers send to them, and since they're probably the first ones we go to for support before contacting the manufacturer, they sometimes get faulted for problems that aren't theirs.
In regards to the Fascinate, I can think of a couple reasons. The one that jumps to mind first is exactly what you said: they've been a success everywhere else. Perhaps Verizon doesn't want to follow their competitors, they want to be different to set themselves apart.
Another possibility is that they don't want to confuse their customers. Android is certainly growing fast, but it's still pretty new. If you advertise too many Android devices, it'll probably confuse those who haven't given it a try yet--when I initially got the Eris, my grandparents asked me, "is that that Google phone thing?" lol
It's probably also simpler to choose a flagship model and stick with it for advertising. The thing about advertising is that you can't possibly advertise everything you've got. I'm a videographer and one of the companies I work for does a lot of local advertising--if you notice local ads, you'll see that many businesses don't realize this. They try to cram all they can into an ad, and it can leave you feeling bored because you just had a ton of info you don't want thrown at you. Ads like these usually don't work very well because most people don't like them.
Advertising is also very expensive. Each device could theoretically have its own ad, so that the issue of cramming too much into an ad won't be a problem. That's why, for example, they highlight different ideas in their variety of Android ads, and never advertise those Android highlights in their device-specific ads. But on the level I work in, the costs aren't low--the company I work for averages about $800 for a simple ad, and starts at $1,200 for the same ad in HD--and we're on the low side, we stay competitive with Comcast's rates! Throw in the cost of an animator (which would start about $200 for a simple talking mascot on top of live video for a 30 second ad) and special effects, and the cost of the ad itself continues to climb.
And once you have an ad, you have to pay for air time. Comcast and Cablevision both recommend that to be effective, an advertiser should expect to spend about $10,000 on the campaign--and this is to people who are advertising in just one or two cable zones within the state of NJ. Magnify that across the country and the cost certainly becomes significant to a company like Verizon.
I think all of those factors add up to create an advertising atmosphere that will favor one, maybe two models. If the Fascinate ends up selling well and being a strong product overall, then maybe Verizon will spotlight Samsung devices in the future.

• Firefox mobile does not work in Samsung Fascinate, only get a blank screen for any search.

I downloaded Firefox Mobile to my Samsung Fascinate. I had no problem with the download or installation. When I tried to do a search, all I got was a blank screen in the Firefox window. The Samsung Fascinate is set up to run only Bing. It does not like doing Google searches. When I try to force it to do a Google search through the existing Bing browser, I get the search result, but when I go to a site, none of the buttons work. In Firefox Mobile, I just get a blank white box in the Firefox window.

You can continue using nightly builds without uninstalling. Fennec will offer to download a new nightly build whenever one is available.
If you want to switch to a release version of Firefox, then you will need to uninstall the nightly build first. This will reset your history/bookmarks/settings.
We are planning to release Firefox 4 beta 2 for Android later this week, so if you prefer to run an official release then you might to wait a few days and install that one.

• My White Samsung Fascinate has issues, can I get it replaced for a different phone?

Okay, I have the White Samsung Fascinate. I bought it from Best Buy back in April, and since then i've had nothing but random problems with it. I've never tried getting it replaced before, but recently it has stopped vibrating altogether, even when in vibrate mode. I factory reset the phone and everything and it still will not work. If I take it to the Verizon Store and they cannot fix the problem can they give me a different phone? I really do not want another Fascinate that will just probably end up giving me more problems in a few months. I also heard that Verizon does not offer replacements for the White Samsung Fascinate, since it was a Best Buy exclusive, and that they will offer you something else. Is that true?

Since you did not by the device from a Retail Verizon Store and has had it over 14 Days the answer would most likely be a no, they will replace it with a referbished Fascinate if you got the insurance plan, other than that it would depend on the rep and manager to do something diffrent but I would not expect a diffrent phone...
Also you may qualify for the early upgrade but this will still mean you have to buy the devicce at contract price and renew contract, but this is only if you qualify and they do not have to offer this as a solution..
Good Luck..

• Motorola Droid X or HTC Droid Incredible or Samsung Fascinate or Wait?

Hey Guys,
Im currently an At&t customer and I absolutely hate my service. I went with it for the At&t Unity Family Plans and Rollover, but have since found it sucks. I currently use a Blackjack II. Anyways, my contract just ended and Im looking at buying a new phone soon. I am only considering Verizon due to the reputed network reliability.
At this point I have several options in front of me, and I want you guys opinions on what you think is a good phone for me? I generally consume a few GB of data per month, send 2500 texts or so, and talk a little as well. My primary uses are gaming, multimedia, texting, and web browsing. Size isn't an issue, however I do a LOT of multitasking.
Please tell me which of the following is the best phone for me in your opinion?
Motorola Droid X
HTC Droid Incredible
Samsung Fascinate
In addition, after doing so, do you think its worth it to buy now? Or should I wait a few more months and get the rumoured LTE phones or iPhone thats coming to Verizon in late 2010/early 2011.

I want to point out it is not my intention to ruffle any feathers. I used to considered myself a loyal Verizon customer, but maybe after nine years with any carrier you have seen too much of the true nature of the way they conduct business. In Verizon's case it is my opinion in the last three years particularly they have gone over the line in terms of unfair restrictions and misleading terms and pricing. This has been born out in succesful lawsuits ( http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/10/ny_verizon.html )
( http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory?id=10975100 ) there are more, but you get the idea.
Wicked One regarding Sprint and Verizon Upgrades, I am not sure about that but here is what I understand:
First Off ETF for Sprint is $200 for Verizon it's $350
"Verizon Wireless came under FCC scrutiny in early December after it doubled its ETF for netbooks, smartphones and some feature phones. No official action has been taken on the matter."

RE: Phone Upgrades
As far as I know Verizon does not offer anything at one year, whereas Sprint does. The catch is what the new phone you are buying will cost you at one year into your two year contract. With Verizon my understanding is at 1 year into your 2 year contract, you pay a $20 upgrade fee and then you can get the new phone you want at a 1 year contract price. So if you were upgrading to a Droid Incredible today under these circumstances you would pay $20 + $269 ($369 - $100 rebate) or $280. With Sprint in the case of the EVO or any other plan where you pay more than $65 month you get the two year price after one year so you would be paying $200.
I wish I could say Verizon is the best, but I have found them to be more focused on pinching money out of our pockets, via weazle marketing gimicks, like "Unlimited" plans that are NOT unlimited, or convincing you that you get more when you actually get less or get a paragraph of restrictions in the small print. Verizon has the best coverage, but that does not balance out any more with me. Most of the time, except when I am traveling in rural areas, I think the other cariers will offer similiar service. I am very close to conducting a personal 30 day test.

• Touch screen /battery life Samsung Fascinate Galaxy S

Any advice on a (Samsung Fascinate Galaxy S) which has a delayed response to the touch screen.  I have had the phone for 4 months and the past 2 or 3 weeks the touch screen has a very delayed reaction when "touched".  Also, the battery has to be charged sometimes twice a day.  Any advice or resolution to these problems would be welcome.

I would look at the apps your might have installed during those past two week and temporarily remove them and see if that clears it up, it could be some sort of conflict. If not, them a system reset will probably fix this issue you are having, if that doesn't help, then ask for a replacement

• Bluetooth peripheral device driver not found-samsung fascinate

I have a samsung fascinate and a brand new dell inspiron laptop.  I cannot get these two together via bluetooth.  The laptop states the "bluetooth peripheral device driver not found."
Are there any solutions for this?
Thanks!

Sure! Try this: First, make sure you have activated Bluetooth pairing on your Fascinate. You can do this by going to your home screen, select Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Bluetooth. Once Bluetooth is on, have your Fascinate scan for your computer by going to Bluetooth settings > Scan for devices. You might be able to pair them that way, instead of trying to find the phone using your computer.

• Swap number from Chocolate to Samsung Fascinate S

Can I swap my LG Chocolate to my husband's Samsung Fascinate S keep my number? He's gotten a new Samsung Galaxy S 4.

You can replace the phone on your line of service with a different phone.  If you switch from a basic phone to a smartphone, you would have to add a data plan.  If you switch from a smartphone to a basic phone, you would delete the data plan.  Your phone number would not change.

• Samsung Fascinate, problems with playing music via USB port on car stereo

Before the update, I could play the music files on my Fascinate via the USB port on my Kenwood stereo, and control basic functions such as skip, pause etc.  Now, my stereo does not recognize the device, and cannot read the files.  I went to local Verizon store where a sales rep tried to connect it in here new Kia Soul and it didn't recognize the device either. It will play via the AUX jack, but I lose player control and the phone does not charge via the AUX cable.  She did a hard reset which did not resolve the problem.  We tried one of the other employee's Fascinate in my car, which did not work either.
So, after hoping to be able to stream music via Pandora, Jango etc thru the USB port after the update, now it seems its primary function is for charging.
Also, the ALL SHARE function, which I used to get the music on my phone originally, does not work now.
Anyone else have this issue with music player and USB connection?

txgopher- I have personally never used my Fascinate to listen to music via USB via stereo however, I can see why it would be frustrating for you to no longer be able to do so when it was never an issue prior to the update.
It sounds as though you and the store rep already did some troubleshooting by trying to duplicate the problem with another car, stereo and even doing the final troubleshooting step which is a master reset.
Since you have done all of the necessary troubleshooting steps to no avail, it most definitely appears as though the software update has interfered with that USB connection in some way.
What I have done is forwarded the information you have provided to Samsung in order for them to look into this concern as well as come up with a way to get this resolved.
Please stay tuned because as soon as we hear back from Samsung we will be sure to update this forum with the results/findings.

• Updates for "palm-top" Samsung Fascinate?

I am using my old Fascinate as a "palm-top".  It is only connected to WiFi and not on the Mobile Network (it is NOT being used as a phone in any manner). It was working well as such a device, but needs updates. Unfortunately, it seems to need the Mobile Network running.  How can I get it updated without it costing me an arm and a leg?  Since support is discontinued, I would hope that acquiring an "update.zip" and other required files is not overly difficult and inexpensive (like some internet forum.?.?.?)..
Any help?
Thanks in advance,
Dean

This did not work for two reasons:
1. My Fascinate does not have Kies Mini on it to begin with and, according to Samsung, is not available for Verizon Fascinates. (Then why do they have a download for it?).  Bottom line, I do not already have the "Kies Mode" for my USB connection which is needed to update it.  And without that, you cannot load Kies onto it.
2. You can ONLY download an update over the air for a Verizon phone.  Even though I don't care if this "phone" has a Verizon monicker or not -- I am using it as a Palm Top, not a phone in any way.  I even tried to see if I can make it some other carrier's "phone" just to get it updated, and no avail.
Silly me for looking at this thing as a WiFi Android "platform".  What a goofball...
Thanks anyway (and I really appreciate your response, Tidbits!).

• Issues charging Samsung Fascinate

Hello all,
First and foremost I just wanna say that I actually love the Fascinate, it's my first smartphone and I got it for a .01 through AmazonWireless. So far I enjoy the phone a lot but one issue is driving me nuts - the battery! I feel like the battery life is OK as long as I don't really use the phone that much. Some basic phone calls, txting, web surfing, etc.
Also, what's even more troubling is the fact that the phone will not charge if it is plugged in to the wall and is in use. The phone takes around 6 hours to charge, and if I use the phone at all the battery life will actually go down despite being plugged in. Is this common?
I just bought the phone four days ago, so it's not too late to return...

So, I am opposed to GETTING RID of the Fascinate.  It's a great phone.  The software update are more of the issue with teh device than the device itself.  I might recommend that since you got such a steal onthe phone, consider buying a factory Samsung battery replacement.  The standard battery will work with your current back cover.  The extended battery makes the phone look pregnant and requires a different cover.  Lots of us don't follow the directions with the phones when we get them new.  You may need to get a new battery.  Before you crash for the night put hte battery in while the phone is turned off and fully charge it without the power on.  You may get better life from  it.  Another thing to consider is double checkig your software updates.  2.2 Froyo is eating up the battery quite a bit.  You might try visit android central for this device and getting some feed back there also.  Many of those persons have taken their phone to the dentist and seem to be getting much more out of the device.  They will be very helpful in their forums.  Good luck.  I enjoy my phone much more than not.  Don't let people discourage you without getting some useful help in the process.

• Samsung Fascinate No Data Access

My Fascinate has once again lost data access.   Last time I had the phone completely reset but I'm tired of this.   Anyone having this as an ongoing issue?   Is it the Samsung or Verizon?

• Hot Spot for the Samsung Fascinate Galaxy S

I need to know if making my Samsung a hot-spot will be good,  or will I have trouble with it??

Hello Larryde,
I apologize for the delayed response.  Mobile Hotspot is an excellent feature, I use it daily!  There have been no issues reported with the capabilities of the Fascinate Hotspot.  For $20 a month you would have a 2GB monthly allowance.  You will be able to connect up to 5 devices at a time via Wi-Fi.  You will be running at the same 3G speeds you experience on your phone. You can manage your usage by checking My Verizon, dialing #DATA or using the My Verizon Android app.  Here is a link to some additional FAQ on the Mobile Hotspot.  Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

If there is no pressing reason to update the phone, I would wait. There are alot of people that are having problems with the phone when they did the upgrades. Missed calls/texts, dropped calls, freezing, etc.
Gingerbread is rumored to be in the works for the Fascinate, hopefully soon...

• Samsung Fascinate Will Not Hold Charge

My Fascinate will not hold a charge longer than about 8 hours. I went to the Verizon store and they said I should get a new battery.  I did. It held better for a couple of weeks and now it is worse thatn before.  Any ideas?

Hello brookssanford,
Are you still experiencing opportunities with your device holding a charge?  If so, I would suggest a factory reset to the device. Since you received a different battery the common denominator would lead towards the device.  To do the reset you would navigate to Settings>Privacy>Factory Data Reset>Reset Phone>Erase Everything.  The phone will reset and prompt you to re-activate the phone.  Please keep in mind this will erase everything from your device so please back up if desired.  Please let me know if this helps. Thank you.
