Samsung Intensity III – what do I think about this phone

There is nothing good in the basic phones. If I don’t like touch screen and I have passed the flip phone era, then there are in fact only two (2) phones offered by the Verizon: LG Cosmos 2 and Samsung Intensity III.
Are these phones any good? I don’t think so. The quality of these phones is not even close to the quality of basic phones that we had in the past.
I am the owner of Samsung Intensity III. I “upgraded” my old Samsung Sway (4 years without any problems) to Samsung Intensity III, and I was experiencing any kind of issues – issues, which I never had with my four (4) previous phones (diff models). The time that I spent with VZW tech support and the store employees in three weeks was much greater than the time spent during the last 10 years. Yah!
Since this is the third Samsung Intensity III in three weeks, I think that I could give honest opinion based on facts.
I had to replace the phone twice for different reasons.
With the first phone, I was experiencing very poor signal, drop calls and terrible sound.
With the second phone, after first night in standby mode, the battery was almost discharged. The battery and the charger have been replaced. On the same day, I spent hours with VZW tech support to fix cracking voice and windy noise in the background. At the end I was told that it might be a problem with the phone and I should go to the store and replace the phone.
The phone was replaced. The cracking voice and windy noise is gone but I still have a weak signal and I hear from the callers that sometimes my voice sound like I was distant from the phone.
I had no problem with:
1. Setting the alarm
2. Setting the bluetooth
3. Transferring the pictures and contacts from the phone to my PC
This phone is very poorly designed with the following issues:
1. The keys (on the front panel) are so small that is very difficult to touch one key without touching another.
2. The orange color of the symbols on the keyboard made the symbols hard to read.
3. VERY small pictures. According to the phone specification: “Display 2.4 inches”. I wonder how it was measured, when the actual width is less than 2" and height approx 2”. But to see the picture in this size, you must set the picture as wallpaper. Otherwise the size of the picture, in the ‘full view’ is only 1 1/2” x 11/8”.
4. The back cover is made so cheap that I am afraid that I can break after a few openings.
5. Poor signal (in comparison to my 4 previous phones that I used in the same location)
Why ALL the basic phone models must be slim? I don’t might to have a phone 1” wider.
There is no variety of choices on the design front. I think that most of the basic phone users could prefer to have a phone in the size of the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, just to have a bigger numbers and a bigger screen size.
So far, it look like the Samsung Intensity III could be the worst cell phone I have owned.
I just don’t understand the phone manufacturers. Why do they cease production of a good quality phone, only to replace by piece of crap?

Junk.
I picked up an Intensity III a couple weeks ago to replace a perfectly good LG Venus that Verizon doesn't want to support any longer. The Samsung appeared to successfully pair with all the Bluetooth devices I tried (3 different headsets (two from LG and one from Samsung) and one vehicle (2011 Hyundai Sonata)), but would not successfully connect with any of them. Samsung's technical support people said I should refer the problem to the Bluetooth device manufacturers, because it wasn't Samsung's responsibility to make their device work with any particular other device. I thought there were "standards" for things such as Bluetooth, to try and insure these types of problems don't happen. I thought it was likely there was something wrong with the particular handset I had and Verizon's technical support people tended to agree with me. But I didn't like Samsung's "blame someone else" attitude and so I exchanged the Intensity III for a somewhat identical feature-wise LG Cosmos 2 last week. So far, except for hanging each night when Backup Assistant runs, the Cosmos 2 is working well and according to those I've talked to and asked, sounding better.

    +"A lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 discharge/charge cycles. The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a larger battery. There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges"+
    Seems to make sense..
    I knew that lithium-ion batteries have no memory concerns, but still I thought that it was a good idea to charge and discharge the battery of a new iPod (or laptop) at least the first time..
    Any thoughts?

    The reason it's sometimes recommended to do a full discharge/charge cycle on a new device is to calibrate the battery indicator. It doesn't do anything for the battery itself.
    The quote you've given agrees with everything I've been taught about lithium-ion batteries.

  • Apple says not to carry your iphone near your body, but how are you supposed to carry it? What does everyone think about this?

    Just curious, I don't see much about this topic, but apparently the radiation levels of this phone are very high. I bet most people carry their phones in their pockets, yet no one is asking about the fact that apple says not to.  Is this practical? Is this something to be concerned about? I don't care about a phone bending vs. my health being seriously affected.

    I Suspect they are just covering their butts for possible future lawsuits. There are reports that some women who carry their (smaller) cell phones in their bra go on to develop breast rumors directly adjacent to where the phone usually sat. There are also studies that find nerve cell stimulation in the brain directly adjacent to the ear where a phone is being used. Three companies have now developed machines designed to use this effect to treat depression. There is much that is unknown about the effects of RF radiation, so phone companies logically want to avoid liability. No one really knows the risks.

  • Firewire is dead.  But what do you think about this idea?

    I know that the firewire port is saudered onto the logic board on my computer and I use to use it all the time but I was connecting my 12" powerbook to a powermac G4 through target disk mode and I accidently plugged in the firewire end in the powermac upside down. I had the other end alreay plugged into my powerbook and since then I got my firewire port has been unresponsive. I also got the ozone smell of death which made me wonder if the smell is the computer chip that controls the throughput of the firewire port or the actual firewire port itself? Because I use to use firewire a lot and so I am very sad to see something that I did, kill the port.
    I had 2 hard drives and dv camcorder and my ipod and of course a firewire hub so I could plug it all in simultaneously. So what I am willing to do is take apart the computer and try to sauder on a new firewire port but now we are back to my original question, is it the port or computer chip. One thing I do know is that my ipod will still get charged even when its directly connected to the computer but nothing will mount.
    If anybody has an input on my dilemma please feel free to add to this.
    Thank you, Kenny

    Hi!
    I had coffe all over my 12" powerbook and was forced to resolder much of it to get back my ethernet, firewire and usb. Here is what you'll need to care about when you decide to open the machine:
    The keyboard assembly is held by 4 screws, 2 of whose are hidden under function keys F1/F2 and F11/F12. Remove caps by gently lifting up their LEFT side.
    Heatpipe assembly must be removed too. I managed overtighten one of screws, and part of it which is soldered to the mainboard got loose. Don't do that.
    Almost everything else must be removed, which involves many different screw lengths. Keeping track of them somehow helps later when you put everything together.
    Don't start the machine with any components (such as hard drive or screen) disconnected. Hardware identification takes ages to perform and will confuse you, because machine appears to be dead most of the time.
    Soldering: Use antistatic iron, lead-free tip and solder. Residue-free flux-pen helps a lot. Almost everything you'll find onboard is SMD, which means that removing components with improper tools or using force will damage the board.
    Using camera to document how components were placed before you remove them gets handy later.
    Good luck!

  • What should I do about this phone ?

    around mid mid september last year I bought an iPhone 4s, 16fb black, and I used it on iOS6 (can't remeber which version) since I didnt want bugs from ios7, and I let my frien use my phone for a day or two, because he didmt have a phone to use to tell his parents that he will Going to revision after school, and then he decided to block my phone by tappinga numbers on password, then it was blocked, and then I told him to fix it within 2 days, and he came back to me saying "it didn't work, I don't know why", I looked at my screen and it said "iphone is blocked" and I sorted it out myself, I had to jump to ios7, and ever since then, my phone wont receive calls or sms texts, only my mobile data works, at the time, the phone was locked on the the phone company "3", and now it changed to "EE", hope someone can shine a light on what i can do, thanks

    Oh well that's what I heard because it's about the 90 days warranty ,,. Anyway can you please tell me what I can do to get it fixed ? It's a not really big crack in the right bottom side of the screen

  • HTML generator script (in Ruby) - what do yout think about it?

    Hi folks,
    since I have a lot of time recently, I decided to create a little (non-dynamic) website with HTML and CSS.
    So, when I began writing I noticed that there is a lot of "typing overhead" what really went on my nerves.
    Be it as this may... I was thinking about how I could shorten the whole process of writing HTML-code.
    I began writing a little ruby-script, wich reads a HTML file line by line, searches for a certain pattern, interprets this pattern and generates HTML-code out of it.
    I hope you get what I mean. Here is the code (it's still experimental... )
    # Command class - contains the "template"-code
    class Commands
    # generate a list
    def Commands.list(args)
    s = "<ul>\n"
    args.each { |arg| s += "<li>#{arg}</li>\n" }
    s += "</ul>\n"
    end
    # generate a headline
    def Commands.h2 (args)
    "<h2>#{args.join(" ")}</h2>"
    end
    # generate an image
    def Commands.img(args)
    "<img src='#{args[0]}' width='#{args[1]}' height='#{args[2]}'/>"
    end
    end
    # Searches for pattern and executes them
    def execute_rubyfoo(content)
    content = content.map { |line| line.strip }
    new_content = content
    success = 0
    errors = 0
    puts "Generating..."
    new_content.each_with_index { |line, i|
    # line matches pattern
    if line =~ /^\$\$\s*rfoo.*/
    command = new_content[i].sub(/\$\$rfoo\s*/, "")
    command = command.sub(/\s*\$\$/, "")
    command = command.split(" ")
    begin
    method = Commands.method(command[0])
    new_content[i] = method.call command[1..-1]
    success += 1
    rescue NameError => e
    puts "--> Line #{i + 1}: Command not found: #{command[0]}"
    errors += 1
    end
    end
    puts "\n---"
    puts "Finished: #{success} successfully, #{errors} errors."
    new_content
    end
    file = File.new("foo.html", "r+")
    new_content = execute_rubyfoo(file.readlines)
    file.close
    new_file = File.new("foo.html.bla", "w+")
    new_file.puts new_content
    new_file.close
    An example HTML-file could look like that:
    <html>
    <body>
    <h1>Hallo</h1>
    $$rfoo list 1 2 3 4 5$$
    $$rfoo h2$$
    $$rfoo img bla.png 100 100$$
    </body>
    </html>
    And a generated HTML-file like that:
    <html>
    <body>
    <h1>Hallo</h1>
    <ul>
    <li>1</li>
    <li>2</li>
    <li>3</li>
    <li>4</li>
    <li>5</li>
    </ul>
    <h2>foo</h2>
    <img src='bla.png' width='100' height='100'/>
    </body>
    </html>
    So, now what I want to know is:
    What do you think about this idea in general and the way I implemented it? Is there already something like that?
    Thanks,
    g0ju

    ERB is even part of the standard ruby libraries. See the Notes for other alternatives.
    I have to admit that I'm guilty of reinventing that wheel, too

  • What do you think of this Design for Multiple Threads

    Hi Java Experts ;
    I'm curious to know what you think about this design for a multhreaded app i'm working on.
    I have a controller thread that (a.) creates threads and (b.) keeps a reference to threads that it creates (by sticking them in a hashtable along with the generated Id for that thread).
    When a created thread completes its job, it decrements the thread counter and removes its reference from the hashtable before it finishes its run method.
    Now here's the interesting part in my controller thread i'm creating new threads on the fly with this infinite loop
         public void run(){
              while(true){
                   try{
                        Thread.sleep(500);
                   }catch(InterruptedException e){
                   if(threadCounter<maxThreadCount && moreJobsToDo.size()>0){
                        createDomainThread();
              }//end while
    what do you think about this pattern ? My goal is to maintain about 200+ created threads running at all times with this pattern.

    jeff kesslerman's book says about threads
    "5.2.3 Threads
    The impact that threads have on RAM footprint isn't a problem for most programs, but running threads do need space to store their stack state, and the system- specific data structures do consume memory.
    Because runtime implementations vary widely in how threads are handled, you might encounter situations where the impact threads have on footprint is significant. For example, some ports of the JRE create a heavyweight OS process for each running thread. In an application that uses many threads, this means that thread costs, rather than class or object costs, can become the dominant factor in the program's memory consumption.
    You shouldn't avoid using threads-they're necessary in many cases, and generally don't have a large impact on footprint. However, you should be aware that the impact can be very different across runtimes. This is one of the reasons it's a good idea to measure performance characteristics under your program's different target environments. "
    Question #1: how does garbage collection go about clearing the stack state, and the system- specific data structures that consume memory.
    Question #2: in my situation, each worker thread's activity is not as brief as a simple server request. Each thread does a lot work and does a lot of network connections. on average I would say 100 http request - each of which can be easily blocked or delayed significantly. Therefore each worker thread may operate for between 2 - 10 minutes.
    Do you think thread pooling is useful in this situation ?

  • How do I stop the "factoid add" from popping up on my Samsung Intensity III?

    I have a Samsung Intensity III and about every hour or so when I pick up my phone, I find that there is a "factoid" add as my lock screen.  It's supper annoying.  How can I go about disabling it?  Does it use data?

    Is this the "Daily Scoop" app?  If it is, try these two things:

    2 In Daily Scoop: Menu > Options > Verizon Msgs > Off.

  • Samsung intensity III

    6hrs with Verizon- in person on line, at store..still no one is able to transfer contact info, pix, etc to this new phone.."computer gluche'!! anyone else having this problem?/ now I'm still on hold with tech rep!1

    If the battery is good – the battery life is not short. You probably have a bad battery in your phone. I had this problem.
    Currently, I have the third Samsung Intensity III. First phone had a good battery, but had some other problems. Second phone had bad battery. After approx 8 hours on standby, the battery was almost discharged.
    I went to the store and they exchange the battery and the charger. The battery was holding okay, but the phone had terrible sound, so the phone was exchange two days later.
    In the third phone the battery is working fine.
    Ask VZW tech support to note your account about the battery problem and then go to the VZW store. They should replace the battery without a problem during 14 days from the date of purchase. Try the store even if these 14 days have passed.
    If this will not work, the factory warranty should help you.

  • Adobe, what do you think about that ?

    - one day I was demoing DPS to 35 people in Paris. The whole day the servers were barely accessible. For the reputation and reliability of DPS that was wonderful.
    - another day I was doing a little DPS demo for Adobe. Again the same problem.
    - another day, the demo was ruined because the servers were so slow.
    - this Monday morning, I open my iPad and I can see my latest Folio in ACV.
    In the afternoon I join Adobe reps and partners and other VIPs in London for the launch of CS6. There I go with my iPad and what a surprise when I want to show the Folio to an Adobe representative ?
    Despite being signed in, all my folios where archived and all in Download state. I could not access a WiFi and even if I could I think that downloading 500 Mb would be impossible.
    Many people where asking me :
    —"And are you teaching DPS ?"
    – I said "Yes, I'm even working on it for real projects."
    — "Do you have one to show us ?"
    – "No, because Adobe's software, for a reason that I don't understand, deleted all my folios a few moments ago and I would have to redownload them again. ACV sucks".
    People to who I have talked to where Adobe people, chiefs of graphic studios (newspaper, agency,...), potential clients for DPS,...
    There was even of Adobe person that told me : "We are receiving a lot of complaints about the technical model of DPS, and you're right, it's terrible".
    There are so many problems with this app and with the servers.
    DPS's reputation will may be better when one day we just play offline with the folios like a PDF in GoodReader for instance.
    DPS is exploding my bandwidth.

    Peter, that is sad. If a publisher decides to pull the issue from the
    server, that's like burning down their own library of things.
    Apple wanted adobe to stop downloading such large data into the storage
    that will be backed up. So issues now go into the cache, that will not be
    uploaded to the Icloud storage.
    Because you buy a 64gb iPad, but get only 2Gb of online storage.

    I am among this community since I invested much into this corporation. I rather go to the consumers just to discuss an idea I would like for this corporation to achieve. I do not like to purchase third party accessories as they seem to fail my expectations or the fact that it is not worth it when i finally see what they have made. Yes they are good products but there is much disappointment when I look to third-party products that say they are engineering products for the iPhone or other Apple device I have purchase. Just a thought no need to be so hostile.
