SAN Boot Target-Cisco folks, please advise

Hi:
Just want to know the difference of the following 2 configurations for SAN Boot for UCS with 2 WWPNs being presented from SAN Storage
Array: I know 1 will work, but how about Option 2????
Cisco UCS manual DOES NOT go into the details needed.
1.
SAN Primary, SAN Target Primary- vHBA-A - Fabric A
SAN Secondary, SAN Target Primary - vHBA-B - Fabric B
VS
2.
SAN Primary, SAN Target Primary - vHBA-A - Fabric A
SAN Secondary, SAN Target Secondary  - vHBA-B - Fabric B
Thanks.
KP Sim

I don't think the system will let you introduce a secondary target on the second vHBA if you haven't defined a primary target for that vHBA.
SAN boot works as follows if you have a policy with 4 targets and 2 vHBAs:
1. try primary vHBA, first (primary) target
2. if that doesn't work, try secondary target on primary vHBA
3. if that doesn't work, switch to secondary vHBA, primary target
4. if that doesn't work, try secondary target on secondary vHBA

  • UCS Central - Making Boot Policy - SAN boot target Provisioning

    Gents
Some objects is always related to the domains and need to be provisioned in global like
VLANs: but we can did it by Provisioning VLANs with UCS Central Using VLAN ID Aliasing.
VSANs: the same idea in VLAN ID Aliasing.
Boot Policy adding SAN boot target : what about this issue how can I provision it so I can configure it globally in abstract way then it will take targets depend on domain during associating the global service profile.

    @Gmonroy
    Thanks for support
But if I need to make a global Service profile temp so I can deploy SF from it in any domain, and if  I referenced this service profile temp to one boot policy so i need to unbind each service profile created from this temp to associate a different boot policy in each domain ? " I will lose the benefit of updating service profile template "
Or I have to create different template per domain ? " I will lose the key benefit of  centralizing Templates in UCS central"
Or there is any workaround to deply this senario.

When will Windows 8.1 be supported on Boot camp 5? I have a new Mac book Pro 2013 and cannot install. Do I return the Windows version and try to download 8.0, or wait it out until it is supported? New to Mac's.
    Apple please advise.

Apple does not respond in these forums except occasionally an Apple employee will stop by. If you want to contact Apple, use the contact us link at the bottom of this page.
With respect to your question "When will Windows 8.1 be supported on Boot camp 5?" you are asking us to speculate as to when Apple will release their drivers supporting Windows 8.1. We do not know, and we can not speculate as to when. From the terms of use of this forum:
"Unless otherwise noted, do not add Submissions about nontechnical topics, including:
Speculations or rumors about unannounced products."
The planned dates of production or release of Windows 8.1 drivers are speculation about the drivers.
With respect to your other question, "Do I return the Windows version and try to download 8.0, or wait it out until it is supported? New to Mac's.". I answered you.

    Hello,
My white McBook (2008 or 2009) recently stopped turning on.  When I hook up the Magsafe power adapter, the light shows green, but the computer will not turn on, or make a sound.  I've tried the re-boot option, but nothing works.  I first thought I needed a new battery because the lights at the back are all off, but shouldn't the computer turn on once the power adapter is hooked up and the light on the Magsafe adapter shows green?  I'm a computer doofus, so please be kind.  Please advise!  Thanks in advance.

When booting up I cannot get past the light blue logo with spinning disc. I have tried it with the install disc and using different keystrokes, i.e. "shift, s, c, o, " please advise. thank you in advance.

The system on the original install dic is probably looking for the original video card.
It may be possible for someone with the right skills to make an install disc for you with the driver for your new card.
As I recall from my early days of being a Macuser, If you held down a key, (spacebar?), while starting it would open a dialog to take you through a monitor setup.

  • Big problem with new WD Caviar Green HDD, please advise!

I bought a new Western Digital Caviar Green HDD 1TB, ( WD10EADS ) it is a SATA 3Gb/s interface HDD, 3.5-inch form factor. the RPM = IntelliPower (NOT 7200 RPM or 5400 RPM which means Rotate automatically depends on the needs of fetching data I suppose?)
    I acknowledged that this series of HDD which three of 6 have the same Power Management which Read/Write = 4.9W / Idle = 2.8W / Standby = 0.4 W / Sleep = 0.4W
    They are differ from the other 3, which 500GB one is 4.1W / 2.2W / 0.8W / 0.8W and 1.5TB is 4.73W 2.75W / 0.72W / 0.72W; 2TB is 6W 3.7W 0.8W 0.8W
Which mean the Standby and Sleep mode are the same state.
Now my big problem is, I bought an external dock SI-7908UI for this WD Caviar Green HDD.
    So I first put the HDD into the SI-7908UI Dock ( USB 2.0 / eSATA / Firewire 400 /800 )
I tried many way of sequence of who power on first? WD Caviar Power on first? or Mac mini Power on first? I found that the best way is Mac mini Power on first, then Power on the external HDD.
OK, before I address my big problem, I should let you know, I found that there is NO S.M.A.R.T. working when you put a S.M.A.R.T. HDD outside the Mac or PC. In Dock, the S.M.A.R.T. won't work, That's how I saw in System Profiler, the FireWire tab says " S.M.A.R.T. status: Not Supported "
and I did test a Non-Green Maxtor HDD, the S.M.A.R.T. doesn't show either. You'll need this info before the real problem I'm gonna say in the following.
NOW, about 10~15 minutes after my Mac mini boot, if I didn't fetch anything from my external HDD, it would goes to sleep itself, that confirmed that the Specification Sheet was true, the Idle = 2.8W and I believe it goes to Idle, NOT Standby or Sleep, which I also believe the Standby or Sleep signal is supposed to be given by Mac OS, but it sounds like Standby or Sleep, BECAUSE the WD HDD suddenly not rotate and the sound it appears that it goes to SLEEP, am I right? I keep Mac awake by browsing the web so Mac mini won't go to sleep (I set 10 minutes in Energy Saver and I checked Put the HDD to sleep when possible)
Well, That is my big problem when WD Green HDD goes to sleep, because I CAN'T wake it up, NOT eject or Shut down the Mac mini. (OK, I'm NOT sure if it goes to Sleep or Idle)
First I thought it freezes the whole Mac OS, then I found I still can move many things, such as I am doing right now, post this big problem here. but I am sure the others are freeze! and no matter how many time I click Shut Down or Restart or Force Quit, the Mac mini didn't respond.
I tried to figure it out because I don't want to Shut Down by force.(5 seconds Press the Power button)
then I found that if I power down the external dock 7908-UI when Mac fail to shut down/restart/or eject the external HDD, It worked.
And the Mac OS will appear a window says that "I shouldn't unplug an external device without Ejecting it first" something like that. and suddenly it shuts down very quickly, everything back to normal, it shut down successfully.
What am I gonna do with this? Am I going to power down my external HDD first every time I want to shut down/eject/restart? Because the Eject the external HDD will cause freeze too! Freeze Finder I suppose.
Is it caused by 7908-UI ? or Caused by WD Caviar's Green Power management?
Because I don't trust 7908-UI, it doesn't look like a trusted brand, I've never heard of this SSI company anyway.
What am I gonna do? Please advise.
    Thanks in advance.

Please realise that I am not the right person to be asking. I pointed you to a thread where, as a Moderator at the Bombich forums, I felt the need to warn users of CCC that a WD drive might cause problems. The thread mainly just copies what WD have said.
Obviously your drive will respond/awake/spin up when you access it manually. Some of the problems are...
    •  Most users want to be in control of whether and/or when a drive sleeps -- WD's auto-sleep cannot be disabled and so precludes that.
    •  Most users want their drive to obey settings in Energy Saver -- the WD auto-sleep mechanism doesn't allow that.
    •  Most users want a scheduled cloning/backup to take place during the night. The cloning app starting the backup process should cause the target drive, if sleeping, to wake/spin up so that the process can take place -- it does for all drives except WD drives where the auto-sleep mechanism used doesn't allow it. LaCie drives, for instance, have auto-sleep +as an option+, during which the drive will respond to Energy Saver settings and to software such as a cloning app.
Please, Mauricette, put you questions/concerns/problems to the reseller or to WD, both of whom took your money without warning you. I am NOT a WD expert! ...or lover! ( )   I became more than disenchanted when I saw that a) WD do not point out the limitations of their external drives at point of sale, and b) WD put the blame for these inadequacies/problems/limitations onto Apple, ignoring the fact that no drives other than WD drives have them.

  • B230-M2 - MK81KR - Win 08 R2 San Boot

    Chaps.
I need to SAN boot this server with Win 08 R2 on the metal.
Service profile works with VMware, so the Zoning/Masking is correct.
On install from 08 Disk, no Hard Drives shown, I loaded the Cisco Storage Driver, now I see the Lun twice, Disk1
Unpartitioned space and Disk2  Unpartitioned space.
There is a Bios not enabled warning when I try to install.
    UCS Version 1.4.3Q
    Driver Disk : 1.4.1
    Please assist
    Danie

    No change on either option.
    On the CD sequence.
I clicked load driver, mounted the 1.4.3 Drivers cd, browsed to Windows\Storage\Cisco\MK81KR\Win08R2\64
    I listed the driver.
I then mounted the Win08 cd, and clicked next to load the driver, it could not find the path, as I had un-mounted the driver disk, so remounted 1.4.3, clicked next, green bas flashed a couple of times, and I got to the Where do you want to install screen. My 40GB disk showed as offline.
Mounted the Win08 Disc, and clicked refresh, twice....
Disk stayed offline, show details on the error allowed me to bring the disk online.
Now the error stated that the BIOS is not setup for booting of this controller, ignored the warning, and clicked next.
Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition.
I can create and delete partitions manually.
EFI disabled and the same install sequence, same results

  • XenServer 6.1 SAN boot on B200M2

I'm new to XenServer.  We have UCS with B200M2's with the M81KR CNA in them.  We primarily use VMware ESXi and we SAN boot all of those machines.  We have had no issue SAN booting ESXi servers.  I've created a new serivce profile template for the XenServer's and brought up a couple machines.  I've allocated the storage and when I got to install XenServer it doesn't see the boot LUNs.  I know the storage is allocated properly.  I can see the LUNs when the blade is booting and I can install ESXi onto the boot LUNs without issue.  The issue is with XenServer seeing the LUN.  I did the F2 > mulitpath option that it says to do in the Appendix of the install guide for XenServer but that makes no difference.  What needs to be done to have XenServer see a boot LUN on a B200M2?

    6.0
Please see the UCS Support Matrix tool for further info:
    http://www.cisco.com/web/techdoc/ucs/interoperability/matrix/matrix.html
Support is coming in the upcoming UCSM 2.1 release before the end of the year (tentatively).  I'm just confirming if support will be included in a future 2.0.x patch or not.

  • PB Startup Problem, please advise

This is a really long post, as I have attempted to provide as much information as possible. Thank you in advance for bearing with me.
My pb won't boot up past the grey screen that appears after the boot-up chime. I am NOT a computer genius, but I have experience in troubleshooting issues, so I will try to provide as much info as possible.
Have had buz when tilting the powerbook for the past 2 months, but it sounds more like the optical drive accessing than the hd, and it originates from the right side of the device(the same side that the optical drive is on). It's possible that the hd is in the same proximity, but i just don't personally know.
PB has been getting slower, and "hangs" on occasion for several seconds, where I get the rainbow wheel of apple death and nothing else happens. With the system monitor up during these periods, the processor usage jumps up to %100 then drops back to normal levels once the episode passes. Sometimes the device freezes completely during these episodes and I have to hard reboot the machine to return to normal operations.
Last night, when I tried a hard reboot it never came back up. I booted from the restore disc and ran the hardware test and received all green lights indicating the hardware was not faulty. I then tried to run the disk utility, but it will not progress past the initial process of reading the disks and does not display my hd. The strange thing about this is that when you get to the initial menu after booting from the disc, it displays my hd, with the correct volume name, and even allows me to change passwords, but the disk utility will not display my hd.
At this point in time, I came under the impression that it must be a software issue, perhaps I picked up a virus, although I have no idea how that would have happened. I decided to reformat and reinstall osx from the apple provided discs. I again ran the hardware test, just to double check, and got the same results. When I tried to reinstall, however, it would not allow me to progress past the introduction step! I reatempted the process several times, with the same results. Once on the introduction step it will not respond to any clickings of the mouse. I decided to let it sit until morning, at this time I was getting fairly frustrated.
This morning, I again ran the hardware test and recieved the same results as the previous 2 tests. When I attempted to reformat and reinstall this time, it allowed me to progress. It had erased the volume, and gotten approximately 1/2 of the way through installation when I recieved an error message informing me that installation had failed, and would I like to retry. At that point in time, I had to leave for work...
Again, thank you for getting this far into the post. Part of me still thinks this is a faulty hd, but I am beginning to wonder if it could be a power management issue, or a problem with the logic board, please advise.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, 9finger.
Have you tried starting up the PowerBook from an external FireWire drive (with an OS X system on it) or perhaps starting into FireWire Target Disk Mode using another Mac? If successful you may then be able to rule out the logic board.
From your previous tests it doesn't seem like the optical drive is the problem. Nor is it likely to be a virus as there is no currently active virus on the OS X platform.
Personally it still sounds like a hard drive issue to me as most of the symptoms you've reported can be seen in failing hard drives. Furthermore a failing hard drive can sometimes appear to work normally before relapsing back into problems. Have you noticed what the S.M.A.R.T. status in Disk Utility says?

  • SAN boot B440 blade

I've been booting my B200-M1 (and M2) blades from the SAN with no issues, but when I try it with the B440, it just hangs. I know it sees the LUN because when I boot from the install ISO I can select the lun as the install location. I'm also using the same boot policy as my B200 blades, so the targets are correct. The firmware on the system is 1.3.1n.
Anyone else having a problem SAN booting a B440?

    Update and resolution:
Update: there was no problem with CentOS 5.5 or VMware 4.x - I just hadn't checked those when I posted this message.
Update: there is a problem with CentOS (or RHEL) < 5.5 - see fix below
Solution: during the install boot, use the following: 'boot: linux mpath'
The problem was that I wasn't using 'boot: linux mpath' during the install boot of CentOS. By not using mpath, something was messed up with the subsequent SAN boot.
Note: even with the Cisco drivers, this wasn't resolved until I used mpath
Note: despite the fact that Cisco doesn't have a driver for RHEL 5.3, it still works if you use mpath during install
    Cheers!

    4. Define a link area and set it to Go To A Page Vies

    6. This used to work in bringing a user to the folder view i specify. Now it does nothing. If i go back to the PDF and EDIT the Link i see this. File: Parent Document Page 1. This in fact does nothing.

    Can somebody please advise urgently...
I backed up my entire hard-drive of my macbook pro - just prior to installing osx mountain lion.
I put everything into a folder on my desktop - then backed it up onto an external drive. Once this was done - i deleted the folder off my desktop - and  following this - things started to go all weird...pages hanging, the coloured 'wheel of death' appeared for ages. So i had to employ a 'hard-boot' restart - as i had not other options.
I'm pretty sure i made copies of of files/apps/folders etc - however not so sure now as i cant even start up my laptop!!!
Can somebosy please help me urgently??!!!

Got the exact same problem, and I also did this operation many times before, from 500Gb to 750Gb, and then from 750Gb to 1 Gb. Not My HD got a little such complaining about bad sectors when in windows bootcamp, but still runs fine though.
So I bought a new 1Gb drive exactly same drive as the one thats getting sick. I did the clone thing, with super duper, CCC, DU, but no matter it will not boot when i move the new drive inside the macbook…….**** thing exuse me, but wasted so much time.
Now I get this strange feeling that something must have changed in the macbook itself. Just wondering if this could be a EFI "mac bios" prevention thing, they made just to sell more new computers, when you can't improve or fix your old one.
If so, then its pretty scary. If not then I simply can't figure out why this suddenly becomes a problem for so many people, as I see so many posts about this!!
