Sandy bridge Mac Pros, anytime soon?

Hey Guys,
Just wondering if the Sandy Bridge Mac Pros will be out anytime soon this year?
Its been more than a year since the Mac Pro line has been updated.
Thanks

  • Mac Pro Update Soon?

I currently own a 17" MacBook Pro (2009), a Mac Pro G5, a 27" iMac (this year), an iPhone 4, and two iPods.
I edit video and produce music with Final Cut Pro 7 and Logic 9 (among other things). I have invested heavily in Apple products, and I'm preparing to invest even more this coming year in order to prepare for some upcoming film projects I will be editing and scoring.
I am patiently waiting to learn whether or not the Mac Pro will be updated soon, or will it be killed altogether.
I am not at all impressed with Apple's recent actions, to wit: Reducing Final Cut Pro to a higher version of iMovie; killing the 17" MacBook Pro; and releasing a watered down and dysfunctinoal version of Maps for the iPhone and iPad, to name a few.
I have planned on obtaining a new iPhone 5 and the iPad (64GB) this year, as well as a 12-core Mac Pro (or equivalent depending on whatever new models may be released).
However, if Apple kills off the Mac Pro, or renders it a useless pile of techno-junk in order to serve the large mass-consumer market, I WILL walk away from Apple in its entirety. This includes puchasing a different phone, tablet, and workstation this year. For now, I will keep my old iPhone 4 on month-to-month with Verizon until these decisions shake out.
Apple needs to realize that its decisions often impact other portions of their product line when they alienate and frustrate their professional users - who are not dependent upon Apple's workflows or UIs to get their work done. I am equally efficient and confident on either platform, but I use Apple out of preference.
As much as I hate MicroTrash Winblows, I will not allow my production efforts (and investments) to be left to the whims of Apple's executive managment and most-likely ill-informed and dysfunctional stockholders.
At anywhere between $5,000 and $14,000 for a Mac Pro, this is not a small investment, and before I make said investment, I need to know that the vendor is going to continue to support the product both now and in the years to come.
Any insight anyone could provide regarding Apple's proposed strategies surrounding the Mac Pro would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

There were 100 threads and even more posts for the last year. Apple doesn't hear or read forum content.
2013 could be a sleeper year too if Intel decides to skip Xeon Ivy Bridge and so close to the next tick-toc - Intel developer conference pretty much sets the stage for the next year which IDC is in October - where we heard about Penryn that went into 2008s, Nehalem's went into 2009.
Buy refurbished 2010 $1819 and throw in $1000 W3690 and 3x16GB - core speed and single socket and max out RAM and load up on PCIE SSD as well.

throw in GTX 670 or 570...
You can find good detailed threads on MacRumors for the above ideas.

  • Mac Pro arriving soon - where to put it?

    Hi all,
pardon the naive question, but the biggest Mac I've ever owned was a flat-panel iMac G4...
Is the Mac Pro a floor-stander? A desktop? Can you put it sideways?
The location of connectors, power cable etc doesn't seem to suggest a favoured location and position. I'd be interested in hearing where and how others keep their Mac Pros.
    Cheers
    Steffen.

Drives don't care which what they're oriented as long as it's one way or another. It's not good to change orientation once you've had it one way or another after a period of time.
The optical drive may be ok if the tray has this little "bracket" thing, sorry for my crap description, that allows it to hold discs on when the drive is not on its usual orientation. Some do and some don't.
As for the floor or desk, as you note, given it's size it's not an easy thing to have on your desk. The front panel connectors aren't any more awkward that say a Dell desktop with front connectors so I don't think they're a big worry.
If it helps any mine will be on the floor next to a rather large UPS.

  • Windows 7 Boot fails on Mac Pro 1,1 (long-standing issue)

i am having a long-standing problem on my first generation (1,1) mac pro where i have an installation of Windows 7 "under" boot camp. this installation involved some kind of minor mac hack that involved writing something to ISO and/or a CD Rom and then getting the installation onto my hard drive.
right now i am not sure if i should get rid of my tech guy, buy the new mac pro as soon as it comes out, boot into safe mode, re-install windows 7 or all of the above. help please?
lately if i try and Option Boot into this volume i get a Windows closed down incorrectly error and then i hit start windows normally it will crash out and restart the computer in mac OS (i.e. in another option boot volume).
at one point the windows 7 boot was not working at all and we discovered that i had to TURN OFF my G-Tech 3 TB backup drive in order to get the Mac to boot into Windows.
i am wondering if i should focus my energies by trying to boot into Safe Mode (and if so what to do if/when i get there) but also whether this appears to be an issue with the Mac Pro, the G-Tech external, Windows or some combination of all plus some user error thrown in for good measure.
i absolutely need to have a volume of windows 7 running and this is a long-standing issue at this point.
i am also running a Carbon Copy Cloner of this volume (the one that has all my OS's) on a daily basis to another internal hard drive (which i assume does not matter but i figure to mention it).
any ideas on what to do??
i am planning at some point to buy the next release of the Mac Pro so i can upgrade the desktop to Mountain Lion to match the laptop but it seems like i should be able to get this working on my end now...
    TIA
P.S. I /am/ also noticing that my User Photo periodically drops off and i just see two blank icons (one for me and one for Guest) when i have to login. i set it to a photo and then a week or two or a boot or two later it will disappear.

    hi all,
a report back after hacking my way through siberia over here:
turns out there are bad sectors on my drive that some third party program discovered.
the disk is on it's way back to WD with a replacement in the works.
fortunately my internal cloned backup got me back up to speed with mac os but unfortunately i was not yet setup to clone my windows boot camp backup so i will be installing windows 7 boot camp one more time on this drive...

  • Mac Pro RAID 0 setup with bootcamp

I'm about to take the plunge and buy a Mac Pro as soon as I get the money (or credit) to. There have been things here and there that have turned me off but I found ways around some concerns, but this one I haven't been able to find.
I am a musician and want to utilize raw power that Mac does so well with. But unfortunately my DAW of choice doesn't support OS X. I hate Vista, I never upgraded, I stayed with XP but have been willing to change to OS X with XP as well, to get the best of both worlds. Then i find my DAW doesn't support XP 64 bit so i am going to have to use Vista 64-bit (bummer).
What I haven't been able to figure out is if it is possible to run a RAID 0 of the windows OS and all its data. The Mac Pro RAID card doesn't support any Windows OS so i am wondering if there is anyway possible to get the Windows OS in RAID, any good hardware or software that will accomplish this. Like if i get the Mac Pro RAID cad, is there a good software or hardware RAID that will allow me to install windows in a RAID 0 configuration?
If its possible I would have no reasons to not move over, but I really need to have my RAID setup in windows since I am using latency sensitive disk streaming programs that need to stream files in the GBs
Also could I just opt out for the Mac Pro Card and get a generic RAID card that supports both Windows and OS X? And if so any recommendations?

I'm glad you are in the planning stages!
The question I didn't know to ask is always the one that bites the worst.
One of the best options might be the RR 4320

Games, hence the whole gaming graphics area, has and is not high on the list of features, which had been a large reason for people installing Windows on Mac.
I didn't want to see you invest in SAS and not get performance level you want.

MacWorld SanFran in a couple weeks is when Apple traditionally would use to announce some of the new products for the next year (Snow, Mac Pro '09, new iMac, etc).
Apple is not very upgradeable. It would cost me more to upgrade the cpu than buy new (though can get a good $$ on my system - in part because it runs the prior version of OS X 10.4 "Tiger". New systems will only run the current/latest OS, you won't be able to run Leopard if a system comes with Snow. The graphic choices and upgrades can be lame. It is almost a closed box.)
I've talked to people that were into audio that used Fibre Channel in part due to low latency, increased queue depth (which is one area SATA has never implemented, 32 vs 256 I/O per sec).
+Forget trying to use the Apple search to find threads, it is 'busted' if I can't find the thread mbean and I had with someone only last week on RAID5/6. I turned to Google to find this thread +

Intel has apparently allowed HP and Fujitsu-Siemens to break the NDA on the Xeon 5570 processor for PR reasons as both companies have published SAP numbers on a Dual Xeon 5570. The Xeon 5570 is based on the same architecture as the Core i7. It is a 2.93 GHz quad-core CPU with 4 times a 256 KB L2-cache and one huge shared 8 MB L3.

And AMD just gave Intel a new run for the money.
AnandTech’s Johan de Gelas has taken a look at AMD and Intel quad-socket servers. The quad-socket six-core Intel Xeon X7460 at 2.66 GHz is compared to the quad-socket four-core Shanghai-based Opteron 8384 at 2.7 GHz. And what were the results of a test using VMware’s ESX Server 3.5?
Shanghai’s 16 cores outperformed Dunnington’s 24 cores (or 48 if Hyper-Threading was used) by 6.5% or 8.8% depending on whether or not IBM or Dell’s chipset was used. But if we normalize that out per core, Shanghai outperforms by 59.8% (per core) or 63.2%. That is unbelievable!

  • Boris RED for Mac Pro

Any chance Apple will have a fix for FCP and Boris RED for the Mac Pro here soon? Boris says Apple's aware of the problem, it sure would be nice to start using my Mac Pro that I ordered months ago. Too bad I rely on RED so much.
Maybe Apple could buy out Boris???
    Tim

This is a serious problem for Boris FX users. BorisFx crashes effected my previous projects in which I was still working on. I had to remove all the transitions and change them to filters. Even though Boris FX have the patches it will work for a while and very often I had to reinstall it again.
Speaking to Tech Support manager from Apple I did not get a straight answer. They said that normally the 3rd party software should adjust to the new Intel chip. I spoke to Boris and they claim that Apple knows about this problem and they are working to resolve it.
As for the Apple it would be very hard to rewrite the software that would be functional to all the 3rd party plugins. It's like Microsoft, they do the changes and let the other companies to adjust to the new OS, like for example IE7 or Vista. This is Sad but true.
I think it would be easier for BorisFX to modify their software to the new Intel than Apple check all the functionality of all the 3rd party software.
On the other hand Apple could have chosen a major plugin companies that brought them so many clients in the past and work with them on their changes.

Which older programs do you need to run?

because I think that virtual machines will slow down to much the Mac
Depending on which programs you seek to use, I think you will discover that these "older programs" running in emulation on your Ivy Bridge Mac Pro will run faster than they did on a G4 or G5 Mac back in 2006.

  • Mac Pro: connecting to iMac 2009 Late version

I have an iMac (Late 2009) 27 inch.
I have contacted Apple online store to see if I can connect Mac Pro to iMac 2009. They told me that I couldn't do that. Maybe there is no easy way to do it but I want to see if it possible. One day I would love to buy Mac Pro (hopefully soon) but I am not really up for the idea of buying a screen. My iMac is still working fine except that I wanted to upgrade graphic card but it seems that I cannot do that with this iMac.
So does anyone know if there is a way to connect Mac Pro to iMac 2009 Late version?
    Arigato in advance,
    Haruno

To use an iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010) or iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) in Target Display mode with another computer as the source:
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort cable to the Mini DisplayPort on each computer. The 27-inch iMac will enter Target Display mode and display content from the source computer.
Note: If you are connecting two 27-inch iMacs, connect a Mini DisplayPort cable to each computer and press Command + F2 on the 27-inch iMac keyboard that you will use as an external display.
To leave Target Display mode, press Command + F2 on the keyboard of the 27-inch iMac that is in Target Display mode. To return to Target Display mode, press Command + F2 again.
from Apples own support article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924
The graphics card options for the current Mac Pro (ATI 5770 and 5870) both have two Mini DisplayPorts so there shouldn't be any problem using your iMac as display for a Mac Pro.

  • Best Graphic Card for a Mac Pro

I am buying a Mac Pro very soon but i am still wondering about what kind of grahics card i should get? I will be doing lots of after effects and maya along with photoshop. I heard the X1900 is a good way to go? Any ideas on what i should get or is the best for me?

    You've got two choices.
The X1900 (ATI) and the Nvidia Quadro FX 4500.
The ATI is $299. The Nvidia is $2000.
All around performance wise, the X1900 is usually faster then the FX4500. It's a more general purpose card, which I find works great in Photoshop and Cinema 4D (3D modeling). The FX 4500 is designed for high-accuracy complex models- usually that of a mechanical CAD drawing or something in engineering.
Regardless, the FX 4500 is far too expensive for what you get over the X1900, which is relatively nothing in your case. The '1900 is cheaper and faster for your uses.
If you've got money to spend, I'd suggest ether more RAM, or loading your Mac Pro up with hard drives (I personally use 4*500GB in two 500GB RAID0 arrays for redundancy).

  • Does the Macbook Pro 13" Early 2011 have Sandy Bridge?

I have the Early 2011 Macbook Pro 13" with an Intel i5 Processor. Some of my friends told me that only the Intel i7 Processor Macbook Pros have the new Sandy Bridge processor. Are they correct because the base model is the only Macbook Pro in the line to have an i5 Processor.

It is not stated in the specifications that either the i5 or i7 has a "Sandy Bridge", but they are the current intel processors, and will be followed by "Ivy Bridge" intel processors (assuming Apple sticks with intel for their processors).  Knowing now that our macs have the second generation "Sandy Bridge" intel processors.  More info: http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/03/intels-2nd-generation-core-processor-family-a nnounced-includes/. The first generation intel processors in the 13" MBP model prior to ours is called "Penryn".

  • As soon as video touches my Source or Program windows the Mac Pro (3,1) shuts down

    Linc,
You keep showing up when I search for this problem so I hope you can help.
I'm having the same issue in Premiere and Media Encoder (but not After Effects). My Mac just restarts itself as soon as video is loaded. I can start Premiere and open a project and go through relinking media, but as soon as video touches my Source or Program windows the Mac Pro (3,1) shuts down.
I've fixed the problem temporarily two times. The first time I was troubleshooting what was wrong and wound up putting in my old video card and after that fixed the problem, I switched back to my GTX 680. I also did a driver update. After doing that I was ok for a few days so I figured it was a driver thing or maybe the card just needed to be reseated. Then when it started acting up again I figured something was going on.
So I started searching again and came across one of your posts that recommended removing CUDA. I did that and it worked perfectly for a week until about 20 minutes ago. Crashed in the middle of an edit and now each time I restart Premiere it crashes as soon as video touches my monitors.
I found this post because I specifically searched for "com.nvidia.web.NVDAResmanWeb(8.2.7)" from my Problem Report.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Darren
