Sandy Bridge processors in new iMacs issues.

Hello
Does anyone know if any of the faulty Sandy Bridge processors which were produced at the start of the year made it into this iMac refresh? Or did Apple wait until the updated versions were produced before using them in their macs? By updated versions I mean the completely non faulty new versions of the chips not the ones that went back to intel and they just patched them up before sending them back out to vendors.
I am in the market for a 27" i7 iMac upgrade but this is the only issue stopping me from buying one straight away. I was thinking of leaving it a few weeks for the initial stock which may contain these faulty chips to sell through then hopefully get an iMac from a newer batch.

I'm sure it's pretty safe to say there are no issues with the current crop of Sandy Bridge procs in the 2011 refresh. Apple would make sure they'd cleared up any problems before rolling out the new iMacs, and If I recall correctly, Intel resumed shipping the corrected chips back in mid February. You should be fine.

  • Arrival of Sandy Bridge processors ?

I am in the market for a new laptop, and loving my T-series machines at work, am considering getting a W-series for home.  Seems there will a number of good things coming from the new Sandy Bridge-based Intel processors, including a marginal speed increase, but superior power management and the inclusion of the Intel on-die GPU for the quad-cores allowing Optimus.
Is there any current speculation on when Lenovo will introduce the i7-2630QM or other new Sandy Bridge processors in the W-series (W510, or a new W520) ?

  • What's the difference between Core 2 Duo and Sandy Bridge Processors?

I have the BASE model of the late 2009 iMac which is the first of the new edge to edge glass iMac's! (3.16 GHZ 4GB RAM) Just wondering what is the advantage and how much faster are the new Sandy Bridge i5 and i7 iMacs? Would I notice the difference if I were to upgrade? How much?
    Thank you

    Hi,

  • Sandy bridge processor

I have heard that the sandy bridge processor had a large flaw (I think it slowed down greatly over time).  I was wondering if anybody could tell me if this is still the case as it would be good info to have before making a purchase. Thanks!

    Hi b,
    http://www.macworld.co.uk/mac/reviews/index.cfm?reviewid=3263850
Intel discovered a hardware problem that could possibly slow down performance over time in the first Windows-based Sandy Bridge computers, and recalled those processors. Apple says that these processors are free of this defect.

  • Can't run Adobe Bridge on my new iMac :(

I'm the proud owner of a new iMac and used migration assistant to transfer from my old iMac.
I noticed I couldn't use the same account name with the new machine so I used a slightly different one and didn't think anymore of it.
I downloaded Photoshop CS6 (which includes Bridge) directly to the new machine. Photoshop opens and runs beautifully but Bridge refuses to open at all.
The error message is (a very helpful) 'Operation could not be completed'.
A google told me it was something to do with permissions so I created a new account and voilá, Bridge opens just fine in the new account.
Could anyone help me fix the issue? I made sure the program itself had read/write permissions assigned and I trashed the old Bridge preferences. I've run disk utility and repaired permissions there as well but no joy.
    Thanks in advance!

Boot to Recovery with Command R
    Choose your Language
    Click Utilities Menu
    Select Terminal
    In Terminal Window type resetpassword
    Press Return
    When Password Reset Utility Appears
Select the HDD where your account is located - Usually Machintosh HD
    Select your Account
    DO NOT Reset your Password
Locate the section called Reset Home Folder Permissions and ACLs
Click Reset Button and Wait for completion
Restart the mac and check your issue.

  • TS2570 Brand new iMac issues?

And if you have this issue with a brand new (one week old) iMac? Do you also have to do al these things trying to fix it? Or does Apple take back the 'old' iMac and immediately changes this for a new one?

You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return a Mac w/no questions asked.

  • The new iMacs, Sandy Bridge and WiDi 2.0 (Wireless HD Display)

I understand that the new Sandy Bridge processors have built-in wireless display (WiDi - HD streaming to an external monitor) and since the new iMacs have these processors; do they have the ability to wirelessly stream HD content via WiDi 2.0?
If not, is this a hardware issue or an OS X issue that may be addressed by a future OS release, such as Lion?

So, yes, I welcome all kinds of waves, even micro ones... Seriously, this is completely affecting my next decision purchase. I want full browser experience on my HDTV without placing an iMac in my living room. If this feature cannot / will not be available on this iMac I will need to purchase a Mac Mini.
Maybe I should re-title my post, but I can't be the only user that wants this feature and if Fusion / Parallels will allow it or a future OS X update will, I would like to know. Neither sales or AppleCare knows the answer?
    Strange.

  • Brand New iMac 24" 2.8 GHz Intel 2 Core Extreme 500 GB Hard Drive Issues

Had a 2 week old iMac 20" 2.4 GHz 320 GB hard drive that I purchased from the Apple Store online on 12/09/07. Got delivered to me on 12/13/07. After 7 calls (on 7 different days) to Apple Care Support, my iMac could not get onto the internet network in my apartment.
Had Apple swap my unit and I got the top of the line model out there now, the iMac 24" 2.8 GHz Intel 2 Core Duo Extreme with 500 GB hard drive. Still, can't connect to the internet.
I've got Time Warner Cable as my internet service provider (High Speed Internet Access). I'm using a brand new Airport Extreme as my base station in the living room, and a brand new (all exchanged through AppleCare) Airport Express which I'm using to extend the network as a bridge.
My new iMac is in the study den in my apartment, and my MacBook Pro gets signal from anywhere in the apartment, but when I use the iMac, and click on my secure network using the WPA2 passcode that I set up, the iMac tries to connect, and says "Connection Time Out" and then "Connection Fail."
I've read posts throughout these forums saying that there are issues with the new aluminum iMacs that came out.
I'm running Leopard 10.5.1 on both machines right now, and even with the swap from the 20" to the 24", I still have the same problems.
Gonna have to make another angry call to AppleCare Support tonight to see if I can get this thing resolved.
Anyone else have any other suggestions to getting this fixed for my iMac?
What about using a different router besides the Apple Extreme or Airport Express? Any ideas?
    Thanks

ok try this with your MAC BOOK PRO
Go to your system preferences go to the apple icon and then hit system preferences. From section where it says Internet & Network, there you should see an icon folder that says Sharing, In tiger its like that I don´t know how it is in Leopard, but if it is the same we are in luck. Ok Go to sharing and in sharing go to airport option in airport option make a 128 bit wep key and make a sick *** long password hit ok. Now go check the box that says Airport and then hit the start button to start using your MAC BOOK PRO as a router. Now go to your sick *** I wish I had your 24 inch Imac and here I am stuck with my old Imac early intel, and hit the airport extreme icon oh by the way you should also enable your MAC BOOK PRO airport extreme which now it is a WIFI Router trasmitter I Hope I was of any help

  • Sandy Bridge

Aching to buy a new Mac Book Pro But But But.
I am worried of such a processor being of its complications.
Have the problems been resolved and Apple are NOT using a modified version
which still holds the problems and using metal strip bridge version that
sits across the ata ports. and also the ata ports 2 will degrade over time.
So basically are Apple now using a corrected Sandy Bridge processor completely
free of any bugs and problems?
If not any idea what is Apple's stance as a brand on this if things go wrong later down the line when the laptop is out of warranty?
    Cheers

If not any idea what is Apple's stance as a brand on this if things go wrong later down the line when the laptop is out of warranty?
This is a user to user forum. As such Terms of use forbid us from guessing Apple's policy or prognosticating the future. Please read on the right.
That said, http://www.ifixit.com/ frequently gets mockups of the internals of new machines shortly after their release. That would allow you to use probably if that metal strip is where you fear.
The "bugs" as it were frequently are user induced, or related to other issues you probably haven't isolated. A PRAM on an old MacBook Pro can cause slow down if the machine ages over 4 years. This is a help forum. As such appeareances are like a hospital ward. You aren't going to hear from as many healthy Mac users and lemons. The unfortunate thing for the magazines trying to find something wrong with Apple, is they have a biased sample on that account trying to read the boards. If there is a problem that Apple wants to cover out of warranty, it often appears here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/
My advice, buy if the machine meets your needs, and get yourself a warranty to go wtih it during the first year of ownership. That way you'll have three years where Apple will fix any hardware related issues that aren't due to user interaction.

  • Can i use Sandy Bridge Cpu on my DV6-2190EV ?

    I have a DV6-2190EV laptop with Intel Core i5 520M . Can i upgrade it with a Sandy Bridge Cpu ?

    Hi,
No, sorry. Intel Core i5 520M is the first generation of the Core iX processors. Sandy Bridge is the second generation of the Intel CPUs. Sandy Bridge processors use different sockets than the older Core i3/5/7 processors...
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core#Nehalem_microarchitecture_based
You may possibly upgrade (see a maintenance and service guide) to a Core i7 7XXQM or 8XXQM but not to a Sandy Bridge processor. It won't fit to the motherboard.

  • HP PAVILION dv7-5000. sandy bridge

I just talking with Intel Technical Support Engineer and they say to me -"Marina, this design flaw with the chipset, will cause its performance (of Sata port 2-5) degrade over time, and not immediately. I would request you to contact HP for support on this. They will assist you in the correct manner, for this chipset" so what say OEM company HP?

There is a problem with the SATA II ports on the motherboards for Sandy Bridge processors. They say that up to 5% of them may have troubles in the future but going to replace all the motherboards (laptops, desktops) anyway. If your laptop has a Sandy Bridge processor, call HP or the seller of the laptop and ask them for a replacement. It's a similar issue like with the Nvidia graphics cards some time ago..

  • Does the Macbook Pro 13" Early 2011 have Sandy Bridge?

I have the Early 2011 Macbook Pro 13" with an Intel i5 Processor. Some of my friends told me that only the Intel i7 Processor Macbook Pros have the new Sandy Bridge processor. Are they correct because the base model is the only Macbook Pro in the line to have an i5 Processor.

It is not stated in the specifications that either the i5 or i7 has a "Sandy Bridge", but they are the current intel processors, and will be followed by "Ivy Bridge" intel processors (assuming Apple sticks with intel for their processors).  Knowing now that our macs have the second generation "Sandy Bridge" intel processors.  More info: http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/03/intels-2nd-generation-core-processor-family-a nnounced-includes/. The first generation intel processors in the 13" MBP model prior to ours is called "Penryn".

  • Lightroom error, changing modules, on new iMac

    Help.
I cannot get LR5 to open on my new iMac. Using OSX 10.9.1, LR 5.3. I consistently get the 'error on changing modules' message, and no catalog will open. I cannot create a new catalog, or open an old one. I've deleted and re-installed LR, CC, all pref and support files, several times using the uninstallers, drag and trash, all no help.
Running same app, same OS, on MacBook Pro with NO problems. I had transferred images, catalogs from an old MacPro with OSX 10.7.5, but I don't see where that should cause a problem. I can put the same catalog on the MBP and LR runs fine.
    Any help sincerely appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, but I've already been all over that page.
Solution 1:  I have version 5.3. Is there a newer one?
Solution 2:  Preference files trashed multiple times with no improvement.
    Total uninstall, re-install, same problem.
Solution 3:  No better. New catalog created from within LR, same problem.
Open LR with option key, choose catalog, test for integrity, same problem.
Solution 4: Uninstalled Nik, even though it states for LR3. No better, same
problem. Note: re-installed Nik, it did not recognize LR, recognized
Photoshop without problem. BTW, Photoshop is working great.
Solution 5: Permissions are set correctly on all folders. Will re-check ONE
more time, just to be sure.
Solution 6: New user account. Have not done this yet. Hard to see why this
would be a problem, as I just obtained the computer four days ago, and I am
the only user. But in the interests of completeness, I will give it a try.
Could this be some new iMac issue? Graphics card?
    Using iMac 27", 3.5 GHz i7; 16GB RAM, 3TB Fusion drive; Nvidia GTX 780M.
This is very frustrating. I need to get back to work and something is wrong
    here.

  • How come most people think it's an isolated Alu iMac issues?

My old PC couldn't do what I needed it to do anymore so I desperately needed a new computer for my project. I was going to go Apple's London store and move a new Alu iMac home immediately, but before I did that I came to this forum ... And that's how thing started to become very complicated.
At first, I was shocked by the number of people complaining about this 'new iMac issues' - the faulty display and the freezing problem ... mostly, the freezing issue. Quite a few people believed it was caused by the 1.1 update and the ATI card. After a few days of my intense reading on this iMac forum, Apple issued a statement acknowledging the freezing issue.
I knew it would only be sensible if I waited until Apple solve the problem. The thing is: I just cannot afford to wait - I have to finish my project.
I stared looking at other options: Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, Mini .... and ... what I have found on this Apple forum, based on what other Mac owner's posts, none of these models is clear of the same problem - unexpected, continuios freezing problem!
Based on what I have read so far, the freezing problem is not exclusive of the
1: new Alu iMAc - some white iMAc, MacPro, MBP, Mini owners have reported the same issue.
2: Macs with ATI graphic card.
3: Macs have been updated to OS X 1.1
    4: Macs have games installed
It's a large, wide spread issue than some people would believe, isn't it? To be honest, I have started looking at Dell desk top these two days ... but I just cannot imagine to spend any money for another PC - it should be my last solution.
I desperately needed an Mac for my project - it's a very important one. I am depressed by the situation I am facing now and don't really know what to do. Can anyone kindly offer me some advice?
Some of you might say: get a grip - it's only a computer ... and the freezing issue is not that serious ...
However, if you rely on the computer to get your work done, would you really go ahead and buy an iMac regardless what is going on. Otherwise, what else can I do? If I buy an iMac and only work under bootcam with Windows until Apple fix the freezing problem - will it be a solution?
If you were me, what would you do?
    I will appreciate any input!

    David,
I posted the same thing and was taken to task by some posters for stating it also. The truth is that gamers were the first to report this issue and did so in far larger numbers than other users. In fact, those who are or were reporting issues with Aperture or iTunes or other applications really didn't start posting in significant numbers about the issue until a few days after it surfaced.
I think many people didn't get a chance to read some of the first posts on the subject as many of them were removed, for cause, and some of them are a few pages back now and forgotten.
I too have had the problem but in my case I was able to solve it by removing the game that was causing it all the time, reformatting the drive, reinstalling, and then updating. That was a week ago and I have not had any freezes since, but I have had video artifacts a couple of times. When it does that I just save my work and restart. I have even managed to get through some iPhoto sessions without issue.
    *To the Original poster:*
No one can tell you what you should or should not do but if you want a Mac, buy one. This problem is not as widespread as some would have you believe. If you base your opinion on what you read here you would come to the conclusion that everyone's iMac is sick, but that is not true. In my case of the three Intel iMacs that I have, only my 24" has the problem, the other two are just fine.
Even if 30% of them were/are bad, which is an absurdly high figure, you would still have a 70% chance of getting one with no issues!!
I also trust that Apple will find and solve the problem. After dealing with them for 20+ years that is what I have come to expect based on my past experiences with them.
