SANE-TWAIN

All of a sudden my scanner doesn't work. It's a Umax Astra 1220u. I have it plugged into this MacBook. When I first got this scanner some years ago, it came without the software. Someone told me about SANE. After a websearch I found the SANE project. I downloaded everything I could from Matthias Ellert's website (http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/), and the scanner worked just fine for a couple of years. I used GraphicConvertor's "acquire" function.
A month ago I was fooling around with "Digger." I don't know what I did, but the MacBook refused to work completely. I reinstalled all the OS. I also downloaded and installed all of Mr. Ellert's sofware. This time GraphicConvertor scanned just one time. Since then, everytime I've tried to scan with either GraphicConvertor or Image Capture, I get a dialog box advising "invalid argument."
I've searched the Web, and I see a lot of discussion to the effect that "invalid argument" means that there is some sort of delay in the software that connects the computer to the scanner. But I'm not a programmer and don't understand any of it.
Perhaps it is significant that twice since I reinstalled the OS I've had some other problem. Both times the display went dark-gray in an unfamiliar manner. This afternoon the display also showed an unfamiliar thermometer scale of rounded dots before a dialog box came up in several languages telling me that I had to restart the computer. When I did, the computer then sent an error report to Apple. I looked at the message. I didn't understand it. I did see the word "kernel" in there.
Any guesses as to why this scanner does not work now when it once did?

Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it is some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Acrobat Pro on Mac OS X 10.6.2 doesn't recognize scanner

I recently installed Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.2.0 on my MacBook running OS X 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard). I can't scan from within Acrobat because it doesn't recognize my HP OfficeJet 4315 scanner. I can scan from the Apple Image Capture software just fine. I can edit documents just fine in Acrobat; I just can't scan from within Acrobat.
When I select "Create > PDF from Scanner" I get the following dialog box and no device is in the "Scanner:" dropdown list.
    Please help! Thanks.

    Thanks for trying.
Sorry won't work unless you machine is listed, or type similar to yours is listed. in one of the components is installed in the system preferences go through that list and turn off all items except for your brand of scanner. And try again.
Also restart computer, and unplug and plug back in your scanners usb connection.
If that doesn't work. Then you have to go to Silverfast and see if they have a package for your Scanner. If so. You will have to pay for it. But is well worth it.
I never have understood which despite having Scanner in Acrobat praticaly since day one. They have never been good about scanner support in Mac anyway.

  • OCR Crashing Can anyone help me with a problem I am having with the current OCR engine crashing

I have a lot of difficult images to recognize and whilst I am not expecting good results I am hoping to OCR these multiple files without crashing the program all the time. I have tried optimising scanned documents on the various settings, splitting the files to make them smaller, using both Acrobat Pro 10 and 11 and Acrobat standard (same OCR engine for all), 3 different PCs but the program continues to crash, tried contact Adobe but no help there. It seems to happen when I have another document opened in Acrobat at the same time as I start to create/scan a new document.  For example it happens while processing the first page of a new scan if I open another document first then start to scan a new document.  If there is nothing open and it is the first document in Acrobat then it seems to scan correctly.  I will try closing each new scan as I complete it and see whether it happens again.  Alternatively I may just need to close and reopen Acrobat EACH time I want to scan a new document - pain in the a*** but it might get me through until a real solution appears.
    edit:
oh, scanned a two page document but didn't save it then tried to open another (24 page document) to insert the newly scanned pages into the old document only to have the programme crash, again.  something seriously wrong with this.  I'll go back to saving the 2 pages first, close acrobat then open the 2 documents and try to merge them...
then scanned 2 pages, saved closed file and reopened same file at which point Acrobat crashed.
switched off scanner, switched on again, reopened file, ok.
reopened 24 page document (in new window), ok.
inserted the 2 pages into 24 page file (now 26 pages), saved file exited, ok.
scanned another 2 page document, Acrobat crashes during processing of first page. not ok.
Going back to thinking it is the interaction with the scanner...
one comment, everytime I scan something for the first time Acrobat comes up with dialog box "Multiple scanner drivers detected. Please choose a scanner." .  I have found no way of setting the preferences to use a specific driver, is there one?  The options are Epson Perfection V30/V300; Sane Twain; and WIA - Epson Perfection V30/V300.  I have always chosen the first option should I try the others?  It does feel like it is the scanner driver but as I have said before I have the most up-to-date driver installed for it, or is it simply the scanner is too old to work with Acrobat XI Pro?  Scanner is attached via USB, perhaps it is interacting with somethning else (I have a USB hub, USB linked hard drive and USB linked tablet attached) and causing the problem although I have used the tablet in the Epson scanner programme (which works fine and creates PDF files directly) and in Photoshop without a problem.  Perhaps I'll just go back to using the Epson scanner programme and aggregate and reorder the files later in Acrobat.
I should have added the following from the Windows Event Viewer...

  • Acrobat 8 can't locate scanner to create PDF from printed document using OCR

    Hello,
I have an Epson scanner that is my default scanner on my OSX (10.6).  Every program I have locates my scanner perfectly except Acrobat 8.0.  Is there something I can do?
From the home dialogue box I click "Create PDF from Scanner".  The next dialogue box opens and the Tab "Please Select a Device" doesn't let me scroll to find my scanner.  So the scan button is greyed out and I can't do anything.  Is there something I can do to make Acrobat clearly find my scanner?
    -Luis

Check to see if they have a Native (not universal Binary) Twain Driver. Adobe refuses to allow universal Binary Twain Drivers in their programs.
Either use a Software package from the SANE/TWAIN Project. (look up on Google). Or use a Pakage Like SilverFast.
Before downloading the SANE/Twain Driver you have to look and see if the have a package for your current  OS  and for your particular Scanner. Stayaway from the SDK's unless your a Programer.
Then when you install all the pieces and set up open Acrobat and go to document Create PDF from Scanner choose SANE/Twain. Should be able to scan with it.
If you use SliverFast it is a standalone package  Just scan and save as a PDF then open in Acrobat.  or save as a Tiff or jpeg. Acrobat hasn't worked with a scanner since Macs went from OS9  to OSX.

  • Acrobat Pro 9 in OS X 10.6.7 won't print

I am trying to print with my Epson Stylus R280 printer with Acrobat, and it is really strange. I get the print dialogue and it acts like it is going to print, but instead of printing the printer just ejects a blank page for every page I am trying to print. It is really frustrating. I have to use Preview to print any PDF files, and that works fine, but I just cant' Acrobat Pro 9 to print at all.

  • Can't find device

Can't find device when trying to use acrobat to scan to pdf.  I get the screen, saying select device, and when clicking on field, only get a check mark, and it still says select device.  I have a brother MFC-7345N all purpose printer/scanner/fax.  The printer is fine, and the scanner works fine too if you go thru preferences, and select printer, and then scanner.  You can scan documents and save them, and then be able to manipulate them later in Acrobat.  But no direct scanning into a PDF from scanner thru Acrobat.  I do have Snow Leopard.  I emailed Brother, and they said it was the Adobe software.  Any help is making my scanner work thru Acrobat would be much appreciated.

Scanner support is very lacking at Adobe for Mac. One thing is they refuse (the software) refuse acknowledge universal Binary is simply not supported. If there is a Phoyoshop Plug for yor printer that work.
And If your download software from the S.A.N.E/TWAIN Project. (Google for it read the info on first page and about 2/3s down the page you will a hotlink refering to ettore and Macintosh.
Switch to that page then first look for list of devices supported. If your Device is supported  go to page  for software download all components, Backend , Frontend, GetText, Prefrence(about 5 parts) for your System none are compatible with previous system, or systems after (They are all unique ). STAY AWAY FROM SDK ITEMS! UNLESS YOU ARE INTO SOFTWARE DESIGN! Install all the parts. restart computer. Then run Disk Utility repait permissions. Now open Acobat and now see if the SANE/TWAIN shows up as a printer.
Another Option is to by SilverFast for your scanner it allows creating  in tiff, jpeg, or PDF. If you intend to scan anything that will be used for OCR scan at no lower than 600dpi.

  • Acrobat 8 for MAC, Scanner CanonScan Lide 30 Not Recognized

    Hi,
I have a problem. I need to create pdf from the scanner but the scanner is not recognized by Adobe Acrobat 8. Does anyone have the same problem? Did you fix that problem? How? any help would be great,
    Thanks in advance.
    George
    PS: I'm using Leopard V. 10.5.5

Unless your Scanner uses a Twain Driver recognized by, The Mac Computer system and therefore Acrobat. It will not work in Acrobat.
A work around is to use the SANE/Twain Driver from the S.A.N.E. Project. Google for SANE. It has to do with Scanners. Then locate when you get to site the link for Macintosh and click that.
choose the components needed for your system Unless you are developer stay away from the SDK's. Install all the components , restart computer, then open Acrobat and and go to section on on scanner and choose SANE device. your now set up to go through procedure to scan

  • No Scanners to Select in Adobe Scan to PDF?

I have a Lexmark X5450 Printer/Scanner and am running Snow Leopard (10.6.1). There are updated device drivers and I've successfully been able to use both scanners equipped on the X5450 in Image Capture. However, when I use Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 and want to directly create a PDF "From Scanner", there is no scanner to select in the device menu. Is this a glitch/bug. Is there some special way to get Acrobat 9 to detect my scanner? I deleted and readded my printer/scanner in System Preferences to no avail? Any suggestions? Thanks!

All would be well if Adobe would stop rufusing to support universal Binary Drivers. People are not just going to ditch their scanner they paid hundereds of dollars for just because Adobe refuses to accept universal Binary Drivers. OSX.6 is a Fairly new OS. and in order to use it you have to spend possibly thousands of Dollars for a new machine to run OSX.6.3 on. Its going to take a while to weed out all the power PC machines. So universal binary is the ticket for now.
Ok, for your Printer Issue, Get on Google and google for the S.A.N.E. Twain Project. (SANE is the Driver system UNIX uses for Scanners). read the page and look for a URL (hotlink for Macintosh)
Now click that link. First look to see if a Mac version of the Sane/Twain Driver is availble for your Printer. If listed, locate the files for your Scanner there should be about 5 or 6  components for your printer  stuff like front end, Back end,  and so on. Do not download the SDK's unless you are a developer). make sure nothing is running other than finder. install all components. (make sure you download version for X.5). no particular order just so all are installed.
Now restart computer and go to System Preferences open control panel installed and set for your scanner or Family you scanner is in.
Now open Acrobat and go to document men down to Create PDF from SCanner. click on any scanner and your scanner or rather SANE?Twin should show you all set.
now on a slow machine the interface is very slow and if doesn't have adaquate memory the software (not Acrobat) might corrupt it might show a Black screen in the preview. if so just reinstall components  and keep on trucking does color and Black and white. I've used it for years to scan documents from an old UMax Flat Bed scanner, on Acrobat. works fine in Acrobat 9.

  • Scanner isn't recognized

    Hi -
I recently upgraded to an iMac (latest line) and I have Photoshop CS3 on it. Using recently downloaded drivers for my Canon N650U scanner, I placed the included plug-in for the scanner in the Photoshop plug-ins folder.
When I open Photoshop, I get a dialog that says, "One or more plug-ins are currently not available on your system. A check to the Help->system info window, I get a message that says this:
    Plug-ins that failed to load:
    CanonPI CS-U 3.8.1X NO VERSION - - from the file “/Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS3/CanonPI CS-U 3.8X”
    CanonPI CS-U 3.8.1X NO VERSION - - from the file “/Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS3/Plug-Ins/Import:Export/CanonPI CS-U 3.8X”
    Installed TWAIN devices: NONE
Is there a step I missed? I followed the directions on the Canon driver site, installed everything, restarted, but it doesn't seem to work.
    Thanks for your help,
    Scott

You need to locate the plug-in and/or driver, select it then press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. Near the top it will indicate whether the item is PPC or Universal Binary.
If you don't have UB drivers and plug-ins for the scanner then you can use other scanning software such as VueScan or try installing the SANE TWAIN open source drivers - VersionTracker or MacUpdate. However, they require a little effort to install and may or may not work with your scanner.
Check to be sure you have the latest Canon driver for your scanner.

  • Trying to use old HP Scanjet 6200C with Mini

I'm trying to use an old scanner that was never supported for Macs as far as I know.
When I connect it to a Windows computer, it seems to work.
When I connect it to my Mac Mini, it's reported as present on my USB 2.0 hub, the same hub that has a working printer. I've tried to access the scanner with SANE/TWAIN (with ImageCapture), VueScan, and ScanAgain. None of them can see it. But they do recognize and support a Canon MP620 printer/scanner which is defined on my wireless LAN.
Any ideas as to why none of these applications can access the scanner? If you have a suggestion for a different forum for this problem, that would also be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Dave

Well, based on a few tests, my problem may be solved, though I can't be sure of the solution.
In addition to the advice from Boece, I may have been steered in the right direction when I had trouble synching my iPod through my external USB hub. (It was a problem installing an OS update on the device.) Apple's Support site suggested connecting directly to the Mac, and that did the trick.
So I tried the same thing with the scanner, and things are working now. BUT I also upgraded to Snow Leopard and then had to upgrade VueScan for compatibility with Snow Leopard, so it could have been a combination of things. But making the direct USB connection to the Mac was probably the key.
I still plan to try access through SANE but haven't had time to download the version compatible with 10.6.

  • Canon MX310 Scanning

Why oh why can we not scan wirelessly?
I installed something called sane-twain, but that didn't work either.
I then decided to remove all scangear drives that came with the canon and now can't even scan when plugged in to MBP direct.
    What is the solution?
    There must be a solution.
    Please Help.
    Vince

No, there must be some sort of solution as there are some who claim their hp and epson printers allow this. There just must be a solution. I'm an internet programmer and believe nothing on a computer is impossible. This is my mission.... lol...
Plus my printer cost a dam fortune. hehe

  • Why won't acrobat pro recognize my hp 2610 xi printer on my mac?

I've got a MacBook Pro witih CS5 and Acrobat 9 Pro and an HP Photosmart 2610xi all in one. When I open Acrobat to Create PDF from scanner it doesn't recognize my printer. I've been online to many different sites talking about need to install S.A.N.E. in order for my computer to recognize my printer as TWAIN. I can't seen to get the SANE sw to install properly to fix my problem. Can anyone recommend or give me information on how to remedy this situation?
    Thanks!
    Cheryl

Have you tried a new cable from the All in one to the computer? is there a separate connection from the scanner section to computer of another part of the all in-one? sound like you have an issue with the scanner itself.
If everythung is working  when you go to acrobat and go to document menu and shoose make PDF > from Scanner. when window open ther should be button choose device  when clicked SANE or SANE TWAIN chould show up. If it doesn't there is a connection problem between the scanner and the computer. If It Brand new out of the box it might be broke or something got unpluged. If brand new out of box they might switch for another unit.
Does it work as a scanner in any other program?

if so set that to scanner first.
Then go into Acrobat and see if the scanner is now shown.
Its only been since OSX.6 That scanners have been acknowledged.
You may have to go to HP and download scanner software for your Printer and work through it.
THere is a SANE/TWAIN Driver  that you can download from The SANE project  (when you open first page of the website read text and look for link to Macintosh) when you get that page follow diections and download  all components  (5-6) for the OS your using.  Do not download the SDK files unless you are a developer. install all of them . Restart Computer. Repair permissions. Now go to preferences. You will see a new Control panel associated with the package of files downloaded. Now open it and select your Printer.
Once set quite preferences, Fire up Acrobat. See if it shows something like SANE/TWAIN.  If so your all set.
Note the software is slow because it converting SANE Commands to Twain Commands . But it works quite nicely.

  • Driver Question for Andrew (HP) or Anyone Else:LaserJet CM2320nf MFP, 2600n

This has been posted by me in threads but keeps getting lost in betwixt 1000's of others - so I'm starting anew
Will there be a driver for the HP LaserJet CM2320nf MFP that allows scanning,
and for the LaserJet 2600n that allows printing?
Both under warranty and for both I get nowhere from HP (support, telephone, email).
I'm rolled back to 10.5.8 until my office can use these, or I go to Windows after 25 years on a Mac.

HP is steadily rolling out new drivers, but this is not an Apple problem since HP supplies the drivers. Apple did recently release the HP Printer Drivers 2.1 update a couple of days ago. You can install it to see if drivers for your printer have been supplied. However, only HP can tell you if and when new drivers will be available for both printing and scanning.
Meanwhile you could try VueScan that may support scanning on your device. Or you could try installing the SANE TWAIN driver (may or may not support scanning for your device.) Both can be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
In general it's always a good idea to avoid upgrading in a business environment until you know that all your hardware is supported by manufacturer updated drivers/software. Apple is not responsible for this.
Of course if you think it's less expensive to move to Windows (assuming it supports your hardware) then perhaps that's what you should do.
