SANs solution for backup over Internet

I have a customer that is trying to set up a service to back up the DASD of a specific hardware type. He would like a small FC/IP gateway at each customer and something like a 9222i18/4 to aggregate in his data center. At one time, I thought Cisco made a FC card for a 7200 series router. Is there anything on a smaller platform that can be used? It would be nice to have compression to minimize bandwidth.
Thanks,

Kbyrd,
The PA-FC-1G is not longer sold or supported, there currently is not a smaller platform than the 9222i that will
support FCIP.
Thanks,
Bill

Heat up the bottom rubber mat with a hairdryer for 5-10 minutes to loosen the adhesive, then pull the rubber mat away from the bottom metal plate carefully.
Then use a screwdriver to remove the 10-12 screws to open up the case.

  • Time Capsule stuck at Preparing for Backup, and internet TC latency issue

I have an iMac that backs up to my 1TB Time Capsule. I have had it since March. Suddenly it stopped backing up. It get's stuck at "preparing for backup" and never actually completes a backup.
I am also experiencing a HUGE latency issue with my internet connection. I am constantly having to use the 'refresh' page button in Safari.
    help....

    TB,
*_Time Machine May Report "Preparing..." For a Long Time_*
Consider these factors regarding an extended period of "Preparing...". Consider each topic separately and do not attempt to act on all of them at once.
*Recent Crash or Other Major System Event* (Deep Traversal)
The reasons for this process are described in an article by George Schreyer. “During the preparation step it checks the FSEvents log for consistency. If it determines that something isn't quite right it has to rescan the whole disk. This can take quite awhile. A full rescan is always triggered by a crash, an unplanned shut down event or by booting from some other bootable disk between backups…. After a crash, Time Machine must scan the whole disk to determine what it has to do because it cannot trust the information that it left behind. Connected via an Ethernet connection, this phase would typically take 20 minutes on an older PowerBook. Being connected wirelessly stretches this phase out to over 3 hours.” [http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html]
According to the following KB article it can sometimes take a very long time if Time Machine begins this “deep traversal” and has to compare data inventories. This may apply to your situation, particularly if many Gigs of data are involved. (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1516)
    *Anti-Virus Software*
Running anti-virus software can interfere with the backup process. Either disable it altogether, or try the suggestion outlined here, “If you use third-party anti-virus scanning software and have issues, make sure your Time Machine back up folder (Backups.backupdb on the Time Machine disk) is excluded from virus scanning.” (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1516)
    *Software Updates* #
Installing new software, upgrading existing software, or updating Mac OS X system software can create major changes in the structure of your Macs directories. Time Machine will backup every file that has changed since the installation.
If you take a look at the Console logs Time Machine may be reporting that your backups need "deep traversal". That's fine. Time Machine knows what is wrong and how to fix it. If you have a great deal of data, it may take quite awhile.
After an OS update (like 10.5.5) Time Machine realizes the system no longer matches what it looked like during the previous backup. So it has determined that it's earlier catalogue of what-should-be-where is 'untrustable'. So it is going to go item-by-item comparing the before and after of your system. If you have just performed an OS Update then Time Machine knows what it's doing - let it do it!
*Spotlight Keeps Indexing Backup Drive* #
It may be that Time Machine can’t proceed or complete a backup due to a Spotlight indexing error. During this period, take a look at the Spotlight icon in the upper right corner of your screen. Is there a tiny dot pulsating in the center of the spyglass? Click on the icon. Is there a progress bar displayed? Generally Spotlight indexing is a good thing. But at time it may hang and never progress, preventing backups from taking place.
Go to System Prefs --> Spotlight --> Privacy Tab.
Drag your Time Machine disk into the window. It should now be among the items to exclude from indexing.
    Now quit System Prefs.
Reopen System Prefs and remove ("-") the Time Machine disk from the window.
This should clear out Spotlights cache. Naturally, Spotlight should begin indexing again (maybe even for a few hours depending on how much data there is), but it should eventually stop.
    *Reboot Time Capsule* #
Stop the backup from the Time Machine menu.
When the Time Machine icon stops spinning, unplug the TC from the wall outlet.
    Wait 10-15 seconds.
    Re-plug it in again.
After it has restarted (30-60 seconds), attempt another backup.
Time Machine will report “Preparing…” again, but it shouldn’t be lasting more than a couple of hours.
Let us know if any of the suggestions above helped in your case.
    Cheers!

  • What is best solution for backup ?

Our environment consisted of RAC (2 nodes). we are trying to back up our database using RMAN with NetBackup.
we also have other different databases need to be backed up.
In RAC case, what is best solution for backing up the database ?
As I mentioned above, we are using RMAN for backup our RAC with NetBackup.
Actually, the RMAN is not simple utility for me.
Is there any other way to back up the database in our situation without rman.
I need some advice from all of you.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Justin
There are many possible ways to backup your database. You must decide the one that suits your environment.
Following is the list of options that you have.
    1. Take Online Backups
Issue this command to freeze tablespaces
    SQL> ALTER TABLESPACE tblspcname BEGIN BACKUP;
Copy all the files belonging to this tablespace to your backup location using OS commands.
Release the tablespace by using this command.
    SQL> ALTER TABLESPACE tblspcname END BACKUP;
To find the data files belonging to a particular tablespace you can issue this statement
    SQL>SELECT file_name, tablespace_name FROM dba_data_files ORDER BY tablespace_name;
    2. If your db size is not BIG then you can take logical backups. Logical Backups can be FULL or incremental. In 10g you can have filesets to spilit your logical backups in more than one file with specified sizes. (By Logical Backups I mean EXPORT).
To take export for example issue this command.
    ORACLE_HOME\bin\exp file=fullpath+filename.dmp log=fullpath+logfilename.log FULL=Y userid=system/pwd@dbconnectstring
To get full list of export parameters type
    ORACLE_HOME\bin\exp help=y
    3. RMAN (Strongly recommended) but you ruled out its possibility so I won't elaborate on that.
    4. COLD BACKUP
To perform this type of backup you will need to shutdown your database by issuing this command.
    SQL>SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
(On RAC you will need to shutdown all the instances before copying files to the backup location).
Use OS copy command to copy files to backup location.
(This method is not recommended as it will flush your SGA and your client will complain about performance for the first few hours).
Let me know if you need more details.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Rgds

  • Best Solution for Backup of Dual System(Mac & Win7) and Data Partition

I need a professional solution of backup my dual-system, which are Mac OS Mavericks and Windows 7, and a Data Paritition.
Right now, I have three partitions: Bootcamp (for Win 7 system, NTFS), DATA (for both system files, FAT32), Macintosh HD (for mac os system, HFS).
Before on PC machine, I may restore the system with Ghost Tool, but since now I am using Macbook Pro. Cannot do that way any more I think.
Also, the annoying thing is DATA partition, if I make it a FAT32 format, some large files cannot be copied into, but if I make it a NTFS, Mac OS cannot regonize it, right?
What about using exFAT format? Never use that before, actually. I heard that format can accept large files and also be regonized by Mac OS.
To sum up, two advices needed. 1. Win 7 partition backup and restore w/o breaking Mac OS system; 2. DATA partition format for both system.
Thanks a lot. I appreciate your help!

  • Cannot see Time Capsule for backup but internet perfect A

I've seen other posts about time capsule problems and most talk about wireless dropout and loss of internet connectivity. My situation is almost the reverse:
Full airport strength in menu bar. Full access to internet sites on at least one computer. Cannot see Time Capsule via Airport Utility or in Finder on any computer. Time Machine backups fail (marked as Delayed in menu bar item).
If I reboot (via unplugging) the Time Capsule, it shows up again in Airport Utility and backups are successful. This has happened three times now. I think the first time was prior to upgrading the firmware. The second two times were after the Time Capsule firmware upgrade. In the second two instances, it looks like the backups run for about 12-13 hours, every hour. No problems. Then, they drop out. Yesterday, it ran from 8:30 AM until 9 PM.
I've got two Macs (a Powerbook G4 and a MacBook Pro), each running latest software updates (security, 10.5.2, etc.).
Unplugging (rebooting) my Time Capsule each day is not an option. That's partly why I moved from an ancient LinkSys router that always needed to be rebooted since we lost local and internet access. Any help is much appreciated!

Have you set up the TC with user accounts??
Most people just use the TC password..
I have done very little with user accounts on the TC.. it seems fundamentally wrong headed to me.. If you have a domain controller with everyone using accounts to login that is fine.. and the TC would then exist in connection to the domain controller.. but it is a home device and there is no function to all that.
What will happen if you change over to standard security or even turn on the guest account I am too scared to suggest as you may not easily get connection back again.. The TC certainly displays a warning going to accounts.. I am not sure of warnings going away from accounts.
If you didn't setup the TC, do you have admin access to it??
Perhaps I am assuming too much before you tell me everything. But I may suggest things you don't want to try.. unfortunately I cannot say this will work.. the issue is widespread across the Mountain Lion TC combo and I have yet to see Apple suggest a solution or even fess up there is a problem. Daily reboots are just simply now a part of the scene for all windows and Mac users.
Is the TC the main router for the network.. 1 hour is not default lease in the TC and very few people even know how to change it.. standard is 1day. I would consider 1hr adequately short for all arp tables to be kept up to date.. the computer should be seeking new lease at 30min.. ie half lease time.
If the TC is bridged an not controlling the network.. that can contribute to the issue.
Setting a static IP on the TC if it is bridged my help.

  • Possible Solution for iMac Airport/Internet Woes

Airport signal constantly dropping out and web pages taking an age to load?
INSTANT SOLUTION (Well it worked instantly for both me and one of my friends with the exact same issues anyway!)
Simply add the following to your DNS Servers
    4.2.2.1
    4.2.2.2
No more constantly dropped airport signal and no more waiting for pages to load. Internet now working as fast or even faster than ever!
I'll admit that I had little confidence in this working myself (Found an old article on the web ages ago that suggested this for a similar problem but cannot for the life of me find the article now!) but was completely blown away when it actually worked a treat!
For anyone who does not know how to add DNS servers:-
Open System Preferences/Network/Airport (In left hand pane)/Advanced (Button at bottom)/DNS (Tab along top)/Click plus sign and type in (Do this for both 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2)/Click OK/Click Apply
Hopefully you should now have a solid connection!

**** that's a shame, I really thought this would work for some people. My friend's connection has been rock solid for months since he did this (After having the same issues) and mine hasn't dropped signal strength for 2 days since doing it (I've only recently had the issues).
Don't know if it's just coincidence or not but mine seemed to start dropping signal strength and slowing down after downloading RealPlayer. RealPlayer downloader started running the next time I openened Safari and my connection went totally erratic from then on. Deleting it did not rectify it, using the Open DNS servers (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.222.220) didn't work but since entering the 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2 I have had no issues.

  • Set up binary mode for backup over FTP

    Hello!
I am about to set up the backup for Oracle DB from Tcode DB13.
My SAP systems are installed on Windows (64 Bit).
The backup data should be saved on the Unix-Samba share via FTP.
If I execute DB-Backup the backup is successful, BUT:
The file names are very strange e.g. <i>S3FV1~6</i>
The second problem is that the files will be written to the wrong directory
(I have set the path to "sap/backup" and the files will be written to "sap").
    My question is:
I have heared about <b>“binary mode”</b> during backup procedure…  <b>With which parameters in init<DBSID>.sap can I set up binary mode for the backup?</b>
<b>Which other FTP-server-parameters or settings in file init<DBSID>.sap are responsible for this issue?</b>
    Thank you very much

    Hi,
    this program may help:
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html (You need the older version for Panther)
You can use it to clone your internal HDD to your external one, and then clone your external one to your internal one after you erase (and write zeros to ensure everything is gone) using Disk utility (I can't vouch for the actual security of this, but 'apparently' if you do the highest setting it will be secure) after booting from an OS X DVD. This is depends on the drive having the ability to boot, however.
After you run Cabon Copy Cloner/Clone your HDD see if you can boot from the drive. (Hold option at startup). Unless there are issues with the specific drive model, your eMac should be able to boot from all FireWire devices.
I'm not sure where Tiger comes into this, however. (As you mention later in your post). The way I understand, you basically just want to erase zeros on your HDD and boot from it just as you acquired it (hence the cloning/re-cloning of the internal HDD).
    Good Luck!

  • Is there a solution for Airprint over VPN connection?

I use a new HP airprint enabled printer in a WIFI network at home. It all works fine that far, the printer is recognized by Airprint feature on both iPhone and iPad..
Furthermore, I have established a VPN connection on my Fritzbox router and setup VPN connection on iPhone and iPad. The VPN connection (IPSec) works without any problem.
Only problem: If I try to print using the VPN connection, no printer is found. I understand it has something to do with Bonjour not working properly over VPN.
But is there any workaround or tweak to make it work somehow?
(Note: I know there is the eprint-feature on the HP printer as well, but I don´t want to use it)
    Thanks

I am having the same problem.  When on my local network, I have 2 AirPrint printers I can print to just fine from iPhone, iPad and iPod.  However, while connected to the VPN, it doesn't see any printers.
The VPN is OS X Lion 10.7.5 VPN.  It is serving addresses in the same domain and subnet as the main network.  However, there is no option for routing control, so I assume routing across the network is somehow limited.  Incidentally, one printer is shared from an iMac, the other is a WiFi printer.
When I connect to the VPN with my Macbook Pro, the printers don't show up as online either.  However, I can ping other machines on my network, including the Lion Server (I also have a Linux server that is serving DNS and DHCP - I can log into that machine with VNC or SSH no problem).
The only ports I have open on the firewalls are the L2TP and PPTP ports, and the VNC port.  But anything with printing should be within the tunnel, and not filtered by the firewall once a virtual circuit is established, right?  Is there a way I can have finer control over the VPN settings, like editing a config file or something?

Most of these devices are designed specifically so that you can add additional JBODs. It depends upon the configuration, but usually the new disk system will be connected to an external port, so it's just a case of adding to the existing setup. The maximum numberthat you can addwill again depend upon the original device, but most of them support multiple boxes. However, I would also suggest that it's worth checking to see if some of the backups are no longer required; and don't forget to test the backups to make sure that you can actually recover. Although this may sound crazy, I know of a place where they were backing up about 60 TB; and when I asked, they had performed a check in sometime other than to restore a single file or folder and insisted that this was sufficient evidence that it worked. When they had a major problem with two...

  • How to configure Time Capsule etc as a local network server with remote access server and for backups

I'm trying to set up new 3TB Time Capsule as a wireless network server (with remote access) and for backups for use in a small office (of two Macs). We have a late 2011 Intel MBP and a brand new MBA both running 10.8.3. We have two external 1TB hard drives that until now have been attached the MBP for storage and backing up that computer, which up until now was the only machine in use. The MBA is for a new employee and we need to share and work on the same files, both here in the office and ideally remotely too via Back to my Mac. The MBP needs constant access. The MBA only occasional. The TC has 7.6.3 firmware and we've set it up using AirPort Utility 6.2. It is currently attached to the MBP via ethernet and it has internet access via a Sagemcom router attached to TC's WAN port.
We've managed to set up a wireless network and both have wireless internet access through the TC
But there are so many issues I don't know where to begin - so I'll start with a description of what we're trying to achieve:
I planned to use the TC as the main server drive and place all the key folders and files there so that both of us can access them wirelessly and remotely. The MBP would back up to the TC and to one or two of the external hard drives - one being attached to the Mac via USB and the other being attached to the TC's USB port. We would back up the important data on the TC using SuperDuper and copy it to both external USB drives.
So , first of all, is that a sensible configuration? Should the 'server' be the one of the external hard drives attached to the TC USB port, backed up regularly to the TC using SuperDuper?

But when you say 'So using USB drive does make sense if you want to use it as a file store', do you mean a USB drive plugged into the TC? I hope that I can attach an external drive to the TC so we can all access and read/write the content wirelessly via the TC network or remotely.
Yes, USB.. as it prevents the sparsebundle mixing with data files. I guess it does depend on how much data you are talking about.. you can use the TC internal disk if you are careful and setup the sparsebundle with fixed sizes once you create them..
And to be clear, I wasn't planning on backing up remotely via BTMM - only to access the shared folders on the TC data drive or USB external drive attached to it. I'm assuming that's ok?
Yes, that is fine. Sorry I got the impression you were going to do backup over internet.
What is the alternative? Having a Mac Mini that's always on? Do I need OS X Server etc.?
A mini would be great.. you don't need server edition.. but I would see how the TC goes.. since you have it and it is much lower power consumption device. It is just that its design is not really for file storage.
One big problem I have is to do with the sharing permissions. For everything on the TC or attached external drive attached to it, it says I have only custom access and every time I try to change permissions it says I don't have the permission to do that. And if I try to change the owner it says my user name is not valid.
How is the security setup on the TC?
The security is a bit tricky.. I must admit since I run windows computer in the network, that I simply turn on the guest account to read and write access. For a business setup that might not be adequate  but it allows me full access to all the files.
If you setup the TC with user accounts then you are in trouble. That makes it very difficult to access, especially if one person already has the file open you may find a second user cannot login. I am not sure as I have avoided the security. IMHO it is meaningless.. since anyone with physical access to the TC can press the reset for one second and has full access.. and can add or change passwords.

  • Time Capsule just for backups, not for wifi.

I used to use my Time Capsule for both backups and wifi but constantly had issues, so I just disconnected it in favor of a simple Airport Express. No issues since switching, but now I have this Time Capsule just sitting here and don't do automatic backups any longer...I would like to use solely for back ups, I don't need these backups to be wireless, just for use with Time Machine. I can't find the answer by google, any suggestions?

I am trying to do the same thing but I am having an issue.
I, too, was having issues with using the Time Capsule (new one-2T) as a router and for backup (the Internet was dropping all the time). So I bought a separate router (ASUS RT-N56U) and have that plugged into my Motorola modem. The Time Capsule I have plugged into the router.
Airport Utility and I have become best friends as of late with all the problems I am having and my TC keeps getting lost-AU says that it was part of my network and now can't be found. Strangely, if I go to Open Network Settings from the menu bar and select Assist Me--->Diagnostics--->Select my network--->Continue and when the window pops up about Always Allow Keychain, I click on Always Allow. And that seems to correct the problem with my TC not being found/part of the network. This happens all the time lately.... Ever since I got the new router.
So if you or anyone have any insight into what is going on.... I will try it! Thanks for the help, Judy

  • Remote Backup Over the Internet to Time Capsule

I am looking to backup my macbook pro over the internet to a remote Time Capsule.  Is there a solution?  i'm using Lion OS

How easy or hard this is depends on how the TC is setup, but if it is the main router and is getting the public IP from the modem it should be relatively easy to share on the internet. I haven't done it so let me leave that for you to google or others here to answer.
Here is a pre-googled one for you to start.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1792838?start=0&tstart=0
You can do it manually using port forwarding from the router, if you are not using TC in router mode.
    http://gigaom.com/apple/access-your-time-capsule-over-the-internet/
Note the requirements to use a public IP address (static address is far superior to do this) or dyndns address.
Getting port forwarding to work in some routers is non-trivial.
Apple should have designed the TC with secure ftp or some sort of vpn/ssl access.. but I digress. They didn't and as yet nobody has managed to hack one in.
But I guess I would be trying to talk you out of doing it at all. Upload on vast majority of internet connections is slow.. even if you have fast downloads, uploads are usually restricted to 1mbit.. you might be fortunate and have really fast connection but mostly uploads are far to slow to want to do this.
Lion will recognise that you are not on your home network, or the external backup device is absent and use local drive to take a snapshot.  Although a local hdd is obviously less safe than a true backup, it is generally an excellent solution for roadies. That is why it is turned on by default in notebooks.
