Santa Rosa Macbook fan noise fix, sort of

I don't know how many of you guys noticed this, but when I got the new Santa Rosa MB it was definitely louder than my previous C2D Macbook. Even when idle doing nothing.
I found out that the lowest rpm on the new Santa Rosa goes at 1800, which in a quiet room at night is way to loud personally.
In order to fix it just download fan control 1.2 and then put the lowest RPM setting to 1000. For me that instantly made the MB super quiet again.
Hope that helps to those that wish more silence out of the Santa Rosa books.

I made an appointment at the Apple Store I got it from (4 days after I purchased). I told them about the weird clicking noise and they took it to the back (store was pretty loud) and came back in a few minutes and offered to exchange it since I was within my 14 days. The new one is way quieter and only makes fan noise with intensive processes (as expected). Doing some research after the fact, I believe my issue was the ticking/clicking one described here: http://www.appledefects.com/wiki/index.php?title=MacBook#.22Mooing.22fan_noise.2C_Ticking.2FClicking_Fannoise Overall, they handled it pretty well (I was prepared to field an inquisition about this manufacturing flaw, luckily I didn't have to and they recognized the problem pretty quickly), and I'm finally enjoying my new MacBook.

  • Design Limitation On ALL Santa Rosa MacBook Pros, 2.2 and 2.4 GHz

While searching the Internet for answers to my new $2500.00 MBP headphone (output jack) has audible hissing sounds I found several posts on Macrumors.com and macintouch.com to explain the design Limitation/Problem. To summarize:
    The Problem
The issue has three components, as described in this MacinTouch Report:
    - A low hiss that is constant whenever the audio circuitry is on
    - Static that occurs whenever anything is playing... even something quiet.
    - A series of high-pitched noises that occur somewhat randomly. The best comparison I've seen is that it's like listening to those hearing tests where you raise your hand when you hear a tone.
The problem only occurs with low-impedance headphones (more on this below).
    Some Facts
    - The problem occurs on ALL Santa Rosa MacBook Pros, 2.2 and 2.4 GHz. It is a design flaw on Apple's part, and returning your machine for a new one will not help. There are plenty of people who say they can't hear the noise, but those people either have high-impedance headphones or speakers, or just don't have very good hearing.
    - Only Santa Rosa MacBook Pros seem to be affected by this particular static problem. I've seen some reports of other machines having audio issues, but they are always different.
    - The 'Audio Update 2007-001' that Apple released about two weeks ago doesn't fix it. It does fix a popping problem on all Intel Macs (including the SR MBPs), so it's worth installing, but that is a different problem than this one.
    - It does seem to be an Apple-specific problem; I've been unable to find any other reports of non-Apple Santa Rosa notebooks having the same problem.
Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue with their new MBP?
    Thanks,
    B

I experience the issue as well both in OS X and when I'm in Windows Vista.
Whenever a program uses audio, there is an annoying high-pitched hissing noise from the built-in speakers.
Of course the severity of the problem depends on the individual hearing ability, but everyone I have asked, have been able to hear the noise.
Apple is known to be the first choice of audio professionals; however this problem is below that standard.

  • Xcode3 Completely Freezes Leopard 10.5.3 on Santa Rosa MacBook Pro

    Hi
I am recently workin on a software project on Xcode3 (with all the latest Updates)
with great disappointments i found out that very often (not every day or every time i use it) while in the process of editing source files the leopard user interface completely freezes (something like a kernel panic happens) and the only thing i can do is to force a shutdown.
it happened to me at least 10 times (sometimes more than one time a-day). i have had user interface freezes before while using other applications but that i'm not having them anymore, the problem clearly re emerged by using xcode (which i never used before)
i suspect it has to do with bugs in the graphics drivers for the GeForce 8600M GT graphics chip that is used by my Core 2 Duo Santa Rosa Macbook Pro (2.2 Ghz) and that Mac Os 10.5.3 Still has not fixed
Anyone has the same problem? or any idea?
    Thanks

It happened once again while i was copying (Apple-C) a selected line of code on the Xcode Source file Editor
I officially submitted tha Bug Report to Apple (Bug ID# 5985528).

  • New Santa Rosa Macbook, No wifi via bootcamp??

Anyone know how to fix this?
Ethernet works, but no wifi. I installed Vista via bootcamp on a new Santa Rosa Macbook. It says that the wireless adapter is Broadcom N. But it wil not connect to wifi, it shows all the networks, but I cannot connect.
Anyone help? I don't even know which Broadcom chip it is to upgrade the driver.
    I'm desperate here.

It should work, but.... I have the "late 2006" Macbook, which has an Atheros based radio, and ironically, it makes more stable Wi-Fi connections in Vista than OSX.
Asking the obvious, I'm presuming you installed the driver disc that boot camp asks you to burn.
In Vista, go to Connect To... on the start menu, then click Manage My Connections. You should be able to see a diagram with your computer, your LAN router and the Internet. If there is a red X on any part of the diagram, you should be able to right click the X and have Windows diagnose and/or try to repair the connection. Try deleting the problem connection(s), then search for networks again and re-join.
Right clicking in windows is putting two fingers on the touch pad, then clicking the button - that should get you the pop up context menu for where you pointer is touching.
Another thing you can try is to open a command window, then do "ipconfig /all | more" to see if your card has been assigned an IP address. You can also note your card's MAC address to see if the router(s) have seen your MAC address.
In some ways, Vista's networking controls are better, but if you're used to XP, it can be frustrating to figure out where things moved.

  • Santa rosa macbook+4gb ram PLZ HELPPPPP

i have a santa rosa macbook (on the box it says it supports up to 4gb) and i was trying to upgrade ram to 4gb from the default 1gb. So i bought 2X 2gb comstar ram from futureshop.
the problem is that when i try to put both of the new sticks for a total of 4 gb, the macbook will turn on but the screen will be black and the sleep indicator light on.
however, when i only put one 2gb in and leave the other slot filled with default 512mb stick for a total of 2.5gb, it will turn on properly and recognize it as 2.5 gb.
I've tried switching ram and slots numerously to determine if it's the slot or ram fault, but it doesn't work whever it's 4gb and works if it's 2.5gb.

    Hello everybody,
Today unfortunately I got 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair low latency (VSA4GSDSKIT667C4) and I'm having the same problem as some of you, the system just handle up to 3GB. I tried many different combination but no luck at the moment. What is going on? Corsair is selling something that doesn't have any guarantee. I'm very disappointed and upset.

  • Identifying a Santa Rosa MacBook

    Hi
I plan on buying a blackbook in the next couple of days from an Apple Reseller (military exchange store). ITs the same price as the one on the Apple website, but I want to make sure the mac I get is the most recent...and the one that their shipping directly from Apple.
Are there any was of telling if it is in fact a Santa Rosa macbook? It does come with Leopard, I know that much.
    thanks.

As you can see the Santa Rosa is all new and lots more bang for your buck.

  • Everyone with a santa rosa macbook pro..

did the wireless fix sort the issues out!? i really need to no. without the wireless working on my macbook pro when i get it in a week..itl be useless!
    everyone whats going on???

MBP Santa Rosa 17", now four days old, officially. Forgot completely about all the wireless/networking problems cited here, and, therefore, just joined my household network (LinkSys) Wednesday afternoon without thinking.
    Everything went perfectly.
Took said MBP to another location this weekend (wi-fi'd marina), again forgetting about the potential problem joining that setup . . . but no difficulty again.
Hope I'm not the exception. LOVE THE NEW MACHINE thus far: no display problems, no wi-fi problems, no kernal crashes, no nothing. Fingers crossed and smile on mouth!

  • Fn + delete, other shortcuts not working with new Santa Rosa Macbooks?

I recently received a brand new Macbook (Santa Rosa platform) as a replacement for my defunct old Macbook (which was the previous generation). I've noticed in bootcamp, Fn+Delete no longer serves as a shortcut for the Del key in windows. Nor does Fn+Up or Fn+Down serve as PgUp, PgDn respectively. Is this intentional, or something that I can get a fix for?

I don't know if my solution will help everyone else, but I am using BootCamp 1.4b and recently reformatted my Windows drive. I had the Mac drivers for this backed up on my Windows PC and I used my PC to burn them to disk. After troubleshooting the problem described above for many hours (or at least one with the same symptoms), I found that the keyboard driver on my cd was corrupt (stupid CD-RWs never work right.) Since I had my ethernet up and running at that point, I was able to use the Windows on my Mac to pull the drivers off my network share and then I deleted the Human Interface Devices as described above and then reran the Mac driver setup program. After I restarted, everything worked fine.
WARNING: Make sure you can do everything you need to do using only the mouse since the keyboard will not function at all after deleting the devices.

  • Santa Rosa MacBook - PC2-4200/DDR2 533 works

Checked it out myself. I read the Intel PM965/GM965 (Santa Rosa) spec, which says both "667 and 533 MHz" DDR2 memory is supported, and that if memory speed is mixed in separate slots that it will revert to the slower speed. I know Apple only recommends PC2-5300, but I thought I'd report back my experiment.
I tried it out myself with one 512 MB Hynix PC2-5300 module (factory installed in my MacBook) along with a 512 MB Samsung PC2-4200 module (from a PC notebook), and System Profiler identifies both modules as DDR2 533MHz.
I used to also believe that for true "dual channel" operation, you would as much as possible to be identical. The Santa Rosa datasheet says that only capacity is critical for full dual-channel operation, and that partial dual-channel operation is possible if the modules aren't matched for size. Also - dual-channel apparently doesn't mean full parallel operation, but that they can be "interleaved" such that one channel can be accessed (read or write requested) in advance while the other channel is still accepting/outputting data - sort of pipelining read or write requests. It's not exactly the same as having a full 128-bit memory bus, which is what I used to think was the case.
I'm not sure if this holds true for the previous generation of MacBooks, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were.

So basically as long as it is all at the same bus speed, different RAM brands can be interchanged without any effect?
That's my impression from reading the Intel datasheet.

  • Santa Rosa MBP, Kernel Panics fixed by 10.4.10 Update v1.1

A friend of mine who has the new 2.4GHz MBP just ran the 10.4.10 v1.1, and he no longer has KPs. Has anyone else tried this with their SR MBPs?
I just got my 7th machine last night. I noticed that Apple has made the AC adapter smaller (similar to PB's). Who knows, maybe they changed something from the first release? Anyways, I tested it on battery, and within about 15 min, a KP while surfing the net! I will give the v1.1 a try when I get home tonight. will report back.
SR MBP owners, pls let me know if there's any fix out there that I am not be aware of. Thank you!

I run mine on battery all the time. Out on the deck, airports, hotspots, office buildings, hotels. Never had an issue with KP's.
I purchased mine through PowerMax on a trade-in deal for my old Core Duo model. They are located in Oregon I believe.
Something very wrong with being on 7. This is my 3rd one and only because I voluntarily keep upgrading them. Had a 15" Core Duo traded up for a 17" Core Duo and now a 17" Santa Rosa. Never had a single problem with any of them.
Apple certainly isn't problem free, the same as any other manufacturer isn't.
But honestly..if your on #7 I would have to start thinking that the problem is something other than the MBP. Some software...configuration...combination of hardware....something. I mean you would pretty much have to be the worlds unluckiest person I would think to have 7 bad ones.
Honestly, I really do mean no offense, but you might want to start looking at other factors. Are you using 3rd party RAM in it? Have you tried other routers? Or just one you have at home? What security protocols are you using? What software have you loaded from the default configuration.
I guess anything is possible, but statistically it would seem improbable that 7 of them could be suffering from the same problem.

  • What discs come with the current (Santa Rosa) macbook pros?

I own a Rev1 Macbook Pro (but that's not really important). I convinced my friend to get a new Macbook Pro. She loves it. But she did something somewhat silly. She asked me what the discs were for that were included in her box and I told her they are only to reinstall the included software. Anyway, she was looking for Comic Life and she concluded it must be on the cds, so she ended up reinstalling Mac OS X! But now the installer is asking for Disc 2 which she can't seem to find...
Now it was my understanding that the OS came on 1 dvd, not two. There are additional parts on another disc for things like Xcode and whatnot, but the main installer should only need 1 disc, correct? Does anyone happen to recall where the second disc is found? I seem to believe it's actually in the same sleve as disc one but she says it isn't.
So yeah maybe the packaging has changed or maybe my memory isn't that great. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I own a Rev1 Macbook Pro *but that's not really important*.
It may be important, if she asks to borrow your DVDs. The OS X Install DVDs for the Intel Macs are machine- and build-specific. So your Install DVDs for a pre-Santa Rosa MBP will most likely not work on an SR machine.
However, if she's missing disc(s) she can call AppleCare and they will send her replacement(s) for a nominal charge (something like $30, I think).
You might also point her to this link:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301229
which describes how to do a custom installation. For apps, etc., not listed there, she could use Pacifist:
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
to extract them from the Install DVDs.
    Hope this helps...
Ps. the iLife suite that was pre-installed on the Mac is located on Install DVD 2.

  • Late 2006 Macbook fan noise - How much does it cost to replace a noisy fan?

    Hi there,
I have a late 2006 Macbook that has served me well over the last four years or so. Unfortunately, the fan is now making one heck of a racket (almost as soon as you switch the machine on).
I gather this is a relatively common problem with this generation of Macbook and can be fixed by replacing the fan. I'm not proficient enough to do this myself so will likley have to take it to an Apple Store to get it done. I wondered whether anyone else had already done this and if so how much it cost them and how long it took? Any info / tips warmly welcomed.
    Thanks,
    James

I suggest you do a search for MacBook repairs. There are many shops that will do it cheaper than Apple. Most can give a quote on a known repair online.

  • Macbook Fan Noise at Low RPMs

My Macbook makes an annoying buzzing noise when the fan is running at low rpms. It sounds almost like a motor running and is very irregular. If I use smc fan control to up the rpms to near 3000 this noise stops and becomes the usual noise for a fan running at higher rpms.
Is my fan broken or put in incorrectly? Is there anything I can do?

To add to Michael's statement. There is a 14 day window for returns. If you just got it return it and get a different one.
