Sanyo Xacti HD1010 - FCP - Apple TV - COMPATIBLE????

I want to buy a Sanyo Xacti HD1010 camcorder. It seems to be the only camcorder out there that I can take the files and play directly in iTunes due to its H.264 encoding and the iTunes-friendly MP4 format. I have three Apple TVs on three different 46" LCD TVs in my home, hence my need for iTunes compatibility.
I'd like to know for sure if FCP can edit footage from this Sanyo Xacti HD1010 camcorder. I have read in places that it can't. But others say it can.
Can anyone shed some light on this topic for me?

Thanks for the info. So correct me if I'm wrong, I can import the files from the Xacti, convert them, edit them, and then save them back in an Apple TV-friendly format?
I pulled a sample file from Sanyo. It's a MP4 with the H264 codec. When I bring it into FCP, I can browse the file fine, set in and out points, etc. then add it to my timeline. But when it lands in the timeline, it has a red bar on top. I render it, then all seems fine. Is that what you mean? I guess when I'm done editing the footage, I have to convert it to H264 MP4 format, right?
What would you suggest in the way of a camcorder? I want HD, editing capabilities, AppleTV friendly, etc. I love the size of the Sanyo Xacti HD1010. Any ideas?

  • Best Export/transcode settings for Sanyo Xacti HD1010 and FCP 6?

Just bought a Sanyo Xacti HD1010, which shoots in 1080p AVCHD/H.264.
    I'm using FCP 6.0.6 on a 24inch Imac 3.06 w/4gb Ram
I'm going to Export/Transcode w/ Mpeg Streamclip (Best free DL ever), and I'm looking for suggestions for export settings to get the best looking footage possible into FCP. I've never really worked with AVCHD before (I'm used to dealing w/ ProRes 422 off HVX-200/P2 cards), and I'm kinda at a loss.
    Thanks in Advance

    Hi,
Not familar with this camera but if you have an intel mac you may be able to use log and transfer to get your footage into Pro Res, if not then Nick Holmes has a great tutorial for using Mpeg Streamclip, just do a search.

  • Sony TG5V vs Sanyo Xacti HD1010: A QUESTION ABOUT IMAGE STABILIZATION

i have decided to return my new Sony TG5V handycam since discovering that it does not have an external mic jack for interviews that I plan on doing. The return will not be a problem, but my new question is this:
I did some preliminary research last night and found that the Sanyo Xacti HD1010 is very similar to the Sony TG5V, and it/the Xacti HD1010 does indeed have an external mic jack, so that solves the microphone requirement.
Reviews have said, however, that the Sanyo HA1010 has poor IS (Image Stabilization) and that in fact, the Sony TG5V has a much better IS. I even saw some comparisons, and it is obvious that the Sony stabilizes better.
HOWEVER: *Since I am going to edit with iMovie '09, which has a fine Image Stabilizer/Non Shake feature, would that make up for the bad shake in the raw footage?* More precisely: Would the same footage I shoot come out just as smooth with the Sanyo Xacti HD1010 with poor IS as it would come out with my Sonya TG5V and the iMovie '09 Image Stabiizer, working double time, so to speak?
And also: I am still looking for a small, lightweight videocam that I can carry in my purse. I do not need or want a larger one. I have a larger Sony that I never use. I welcome any suggestions.
    Thank you.

I just bought an Xacti HD2000, convinced by what now seems to be pure "hype" about much more rapid transfer and editing in iMovie but don't see any improvement over my Canon HG20 which ricords in AVCHD. In any case, iFrame is 30fps. Sanyo made a big pitch about Xacti, iFrame and the Mac but turns out all the software and the manuals are about Windows. My requests for assistance of Sanyo got zero results, after the automated response. If you want I'll sell you my Xacti.

  • Sanyo Xacti HD1010 4MP MPEG4 High Definition 1080i/1080p Camcorder

I am thinking about purchasing this camera for my video work. I have not done any HD work and thought this would be an easy way to try it out.
Has anyone had any experience with this model camera and Premier CS4. I would appreciate your input.
    Thanks,

Xacti may not work with PR and may require conversion to another format before editing. Do a search, both here and in the PE forum.

  • Sanyo VPC 1000HD H.264 Not Compatible with QuickTime or FCP

    I recently aquired the Sanyo Xacti-VPC 1000HD.
From the results I've observed so far, it's a terrific camera for the price.
My problem, and I know this has been touched in this forum to a limited degree, is that FCP and QuickTime see the MP4 (H.264) files generated by this camera as green screens.
Sanyo suggests that regressing to QuickTime 7.1.6 is the way to go since it supposedly works while the newest update QuickTime 7.2 strangely only creates a green screen... and some user bad language.
I was hoping my upgrade to Leopard (wow 300+ improvements) would cure this issue with FCP 6.0 but noo, green is "in" these days and that's all FCP 6.0 will show me when I import any of those files.
No doubt this situation will be rectified over time and I know this camera is relatively new to the market BUT I would like to find a means of cutting it's output NOW.
I tried the one solution offered in an earlier posting of regressing to QuickTime 7.1.6.
It did sorta work briefly (choppy video playback but no green screen) but later launches of FCP 6.0 just resulted in FCP launch aborts.
Another poster suggested that iMovie '08 w/QT 7.2 handled Sanyo h.264 files okay but apparently iMovie '08 on my MacBookPro (purchased spring 2007) prefers green as well.
I do hope someone can forward a workable solution as I really like this camera.
They have a demo video available at through the Sanyo site of some music performance that proves someone is doing nice editing with the Sanyo VPC-1000HD h.264 files, though I have no idea what technology they are using?
Anyway, any and all responses would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    jcrewe

About QTs encoding size the clip is not forced to 4:3 resolution of 320x240, instead it is resized to fit in the boundaries of a 320x240 rectangle. i.e. a 640x268 clip I had, was resized to 320x134.
-it supports non-mod16 resolutions like the one above or 317x240.
    found some info on profiles:
QuickTime only supports up to Main Profile. None of the High Profile settings such as 8x8 intra are supported by Apple. If you try to encode your x264 video with these settings, it will NOT play on QuickTime.
    AVC/H.264 Profiles
The AVC/H.264 standard defines four different Profiles: Baseline, Main, Extended and High Profile (which themselves are subdivided into Levels):
    - Baseline Profile offers I/P-Frames, supports progressive and CAVLC only
    - Extended Profile offers I/P/B/SP/SI-Frames, supports progressive and CAVLC only
    - Main Profile offers I/P/B-Frames, supports progressive and interlaced, and offers CAVLC or CABAC
    - High Profile (aka FRExt) adds to Main Profile: 8x8 intra prediction, custom quants, lossless video coding, more yuv formats (4:4:4...)
Does anyone have more info on the specs of Baseline 1.3?
Google was not my friends on that one.

  • Sanyo XACTI HD1000 MP4 and Final Cut Express HD

    Hi there,
I hope that somebody can help me. I am completely new to video and just purchased the Sanyo XACTO HD1000 Full HD camera which is not AVCHD but H.264 with file extension MP4.
As I do have some footage with FullHD 1920*1080 I'm getting somewhat frustrated about not being successful to get anything done in FCE HD:
The Log/Transfer option doesn't work as FCE complains about either unsupported format and/or invalid directory structure.
Dragging and dropping a mp4 to the upper right shows a green screen. When playing then I do hear sound but video stays "green".
I tried MPEG streamclip to convert in any other format but still the screen is green...
Does anybody have an idea how to overcome this issue, whether Apple does have any plans to provide an update etc.? It's kind of funny that H.264 seems to be a more and more adopted standard (one of the reasons I chose the Sanyo camcorder) but a such powerful software like FCE can't handle it.
Quicktime also cant play the video files...
Any help is more than appreciated in order to get a planned Christmas gift (=DVD) done in time...
    Thanks

I am also using a Sanyo Xacti HD 100 camcorder and although I am not sadistic, I really am excited to find finally someone who has also bought this marvellous thing and experiences the same problems as I have.
Reading your topic makes me already a lot wiser noticing that the format of the Xacti is AVC/H.264 ( being different than the AVCHD-format ) probably is the reason why imcompatiblity occurs with Apple. As I can conclude we only can wait till Apple makes an update to solve this problem, and till then use the lower quality.
The software which surely wil do the things we want is Ulead ( Corel - Windows software ) which seems to be bundled with the HD100.
    http://dvformat.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=240611
Earlier today I launched folowing topic, now I know the problem probably is the AVC/H.264 - format.
+My experience in using the Apple video software is that there are no problems as long as I don't try the full HD quality.+
+First of all, just simply trying to view the HD files with Quick Time - after having copied them on the harddisk- does'nt work. The only thing I see is a green screen while I do hear the audio part, so I presume QuickTime & Full HD aren't compatible.+
+When I try to import full HD video's using *iMovie 7*, iMovie crashes, so I presume iMovie & Full HD aren't compatible.+
+Then I tried *iMovieHD 6*, while is seemed that this earlier version does handle the full HD - format, the importing succeeded but ... once again trying to view the files doesn't work, as the generated miniatures look like, also the screen only shows a full green screen with sound !!+
    +So I presume iMovieHD 6 & Full HD aren't compatible.+
+The only thing that is left is trying to use *Final Cut Pro*, which I still have to buy.+
+As full HD is represented as the standard for optimal quality, practical use seems upto now to be quite complicated and simply not working although a lot of features claim to do.+
+Do you think Final Cut Pro will handle with FULL HD, or what else can be the reason the incompatibility of Full HD with Apple software.+

  • Sanyo Xacti Full HD and FCPX

The new FCPX does not accept Sanyo Xacti Full HD 1920x1080 60 fields/s as input. The input shows up black in the Event Window and flashing white when shimming.
Other formats as SanyoFull-SHQ 1920x1080 30fps and Sanyo HD-HR 1280x720 60fps are accepted as input and works OK. Are there any solutions for this?
    /Bertil

The Sanyo Xacti (mine is VPC-CG21EX) H.264/MP4 footage  will play in Quicktime 10.0 and 7.6.6. It will play natively and rather jerkily in the FCE Viewer, and after a quick render will play perfectly in the FCE 4 Timeline. It is unrecognized however by FCP X (though the audio plays fine). How can that be? Surely the FCP X codec set should be at least the same as the Quicktime set.
Apple's work around is to transcode in FCE to say ProRes 422HQ and then import that file to FCP X.  That works OK, but now we are back to lengthy transcodes ( 32 bit, single core, not in background) before you can edit footage.  Sanyo are pretty silent on their codecs and must be unlikely to help. FCE is not even on their list of approved NLEs,  despite it working well.
So Apple, what about a full set of Codecs for FCP X? (I have the latest Codec updates).

I followed exactly my Xacti manual, but nothing happens.
From Mini USB (Xacti Camcoder) to USB (iMac)...nothing!
After connecting the USB, In my Camcoder's screen, it says, *"Hard disk is not Connected."* & *"Disconnect USB converter cable if not using XACTI Library."*
Is this an Apple issue or a Sanyo issue?
    Thanks!

Hi, first thing I would do is try connecting the Sanyo to another Mac.
On your Mac try going the SMC route:- http://macosx.com/forums/howto-faqs/302002-reset-system-management-controller-sm c.html
Try another connecting cable - Look on the FAQ (Sanyo Site)->http://sanyo.com/xacti/english/products/vpc_fh1a/index.html..........L

    Codec : icod
I generally defer to folks like QuickTimeKirk on these sorts of matters, but I think that's the source of the problem. That's the Apple Intermediate Codec, an editing codec used on Macs:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7240374#7240374
... and it won't display on a PC:

Can the provider of the file re-export it using a different video codec for you?

  • Sanyo Xacti

I was thinking of buying the Sanyo Xacti VPC E1. I have a 1.67 GHz Powerbook G4 with 2 GB of RAM, running OS X 10.4.10. I have iMovie 5.0.2. Can I install iMovie '08 on my laptop? Can I edit the video (MPEG-4 AVC H.264) from this camcorder via the USB 2.0 cable in my version of iMovie or iMovie '08? I read somewhere that it took 90 seconds to convert 1 second of video into a editable format. That would mean 450 hours to convert the 5 hours of video on the 8 GB card, and to do that I would need a new laptop (MacBook Pro). Can this be true? Is there a way to use what I have in a reasonable amount of time to edit video from this camcorder?

"The apple store suggested that possibly you cannot capture the video into FCE, "
Not possibly, it won't. That camera uses an SD Memory Card for stills and video. There is only a USB socket for transfers.
Probably not what you wanted to hear and I don't like being the bearer of bad news, but at least you won't be tearing your hair out trying to get it to go.
Try using the USB port to get the video clips into Mac and store them somewhere handy like the Desktop.
Do you know the file type? I recall them to be Mpeg 2 or 4.
If they are then de-muxing will apply.
At the end of the day the Sanyo is really not the right tool for the job. But after some hoop jumping it will be possible.

Buy something else... Buy something that records a format that FCP can edit. H.264 and MPEG-4 is a DELIVERY format. USB drives won't be fast enough either... FW 800 or better yet, eSATA is the way to go...

  • Sanyo Xacti HD1000 is not recognized

My Sanyo Xacti HD1000 is sitting in the dock plugged into the outlet and the usb cable is attached to the computer, When I turn it on my Mac Pro doesn't do anything. Nothing is recognized so I'm unable to import my movie files to edit in FCP. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
    Nate

Hi natecreate, I've run into the same problem with the Sanyo Xacti HD700. The imac doesn't recognize it as being connected and after pushing the little black button on the dock i just go through a usb connection screen on the hd700 (as per the instructions) of "computer" then select "card reader" then a message: "connecting card reader" stays up indefinitely...
The really strange thing is that it did work once into iphoto on an older powerbook (can't remember what ilife version) but all the video footage was really stop-start. Now I've transferred these videos to this new iMac and it plays faultlessly and with awesome clarity. - I've got the images (photos and movie) to prove it but I can't remember how i got it there because i had tried so many variations... duh!
Have you had any progress on your situation?

  • Sanyo Xacti Files problem

Premiere Elements does not read correctly all my files recorded with a Sanyo Xacti HD1000 at lower resolution.
The format of the files is MP4 - H264. If the camera is set at Full-Hd (1920 x 1080) files are read correctly by premiere, while if the camera is set at 640x480 60 fps when I put the files into premiere video is slower than audio.
It seems like video is working at 30 fps while audio is at regular speed. I did not succeed in solving the problem but converting the format with a video converter software.
Has anyone any suggestion to avoid the conversion process and having premiere reading the files correctly?
(Thank you in advance and sorry for my english)!

At full resolution, that camcorder is producing true AVCHD video, which Premiere Elements can work with.
It appears that the lower resolution format is not compatible with the program. Sorry.

  • Sanyo xacti and FCP2

Has anyone used the Sanyo Xacti E1 camera with FCP2?
I'm shooting in HD, I assume that I can mix the formats... just curios if anyone has had any first hand experience with it and FCP2...
    Thanks,
    Ed

FCP2 won't work with HD formats. You'll need FCP 4.5 for DVCProHD and FCP 5.1 for HDV. You're best option is to use the current version, FCP 6. But the codec used by the Xacti may still need to be converted prior to importing into FCP ... I believe it's one of the many MPEG-4 flavors.
