SAP Backup

Hi,
I would like to find out more in detail about backup. What are the backup we need to perform inorder to do a full recovery ? Eg,
1)We need to backup both the sap and also the database right ?
2)For database, if we do a offline backup, do we just backup the archive log ?
3)How about the redo log ? Is it necessary during the offline backup ?
4)What do we backup for the SAP itself ?
SAP + archive log = full backup ?
Regards
Lauran

Hi Lauran
For doing full recovery all you need to have is a consistent backup and the logs generated after that backup.
1)We need to backup both the sap and also the database right ?
Taking backup of database means you can do recovery...SAP backup means you need to take non-database components backup like OS files...in windows NTBACKUP or in unix file system copy...
In a regular basis backup of database is sufficient but once or twice a mnth depending upon ur strategy u shud take backup at OS level.
2)For database, if we do a offline backup, do we just backup the archive log ?
Offline backup means u backup the database when it is shutdown. Db is closed to ensure that it is in a consistent state. Offline backup can be taken along with archive log. If your backup is fyn den archive vl jst be for additional security dat if by chance dat backup creates some problem u an use the archive log accrdingly.
3)How about the redo log ? Is it necessary during the offline backup ?
Redo log is not necessary during offline backup. Offline bakup means the db is in a consistent state and does not need any log files before the time of backup. Redo log are useful when u restore the backup and apply the logs aftr the tym of the backup to bring it to the current state.
4)What do we backup for the SAP itself ?
For SAP you back up the files/folders at the OS level like the /usr directory and the other directories related to SAP. On windows u take the backup of the OS files as well to restore the complete system in case of failure.
So there are multiple ways in which it can be achieved. Depends on the company strategy.
SAP + archive log = full backup ?
The above equation u cannot say it as correct actually as it differs for different situation. It depends on what you include in SAP backup...If u include everything frm DB files to SAP files + the logs then it is correct else if you take backup of only the SAP related files/directories and not oracle then it is not correct.
So better not to conclude in such a way and let it vary according to the situation!
Hope this clears all your doubts.

    Dear Dayal,
Thank you for your trust on me. To be honest, I never use SAP Backup Service. This is because: SQL Server provides its own Backup Service. No other vendor can compete with its build in function.

  • SAP Backup service

    Hello friends,
its been now more than a week that my SAP backup is not doing automatic backup on the server. i have checked all the settings and nothing is wrong. this happened after i have upgraded to 8.8 version from 2007. when i check the service in windows services, it shows that the service is starting... but it stays under this status forever, i cannot stop it or restart.
did anyone had such a problem before? please help.

    Hi,
If the service is starting, it means not started. You have to clean reinstall the service tool.
You may use SQL Server backup function directly. That is another option.
    Thank,

  • SAP Backups ; R/3 & file system

    Hello,
What is the different between SAP R/3 backup and SAP File System backup?
what are the files that backing up in each cases
To which back up does the oracle DB fit in. (Data Files,Control files, Redo Logs, SPFILE)
To which back up does the O/S files fit in. (here Suse O/S)
    thankx

There is not any concept of SAP file system backup.....it means OS level file system backup.
SAP R/3 backup can backed up all the sapdata(database) files, controlfiles as well as redologs.
OS filesystem level backup can backed up all the files based on your requirement and rotation.
Both backups you can use for restorations.....SAP R/3 backup will take all the responsibilities in backup as well as in restoration.
but in OS level backup first you must know which files need to be backed up and what exactly the all directoruies contains.

  • How to configure sap backup in DB13

    Dears:
In DB13, i create Whole database online + redo log backup in backup calendar, but i don't know where i can configure to make the backup data store into local harddisk or tape.
If store in local harddisk, where can i specify the path which the backup data to save.
If store in tape, where can i specify the tape name?

You need to configure the tapes and backup location on you init<sid>.sap (if you're using oracle)...

  • What are the SAP backup for SID (SAP DB), Master & MSDB?

    Dear Experts,
I'm trying to do backup via tcode DB13 for full backup.  Somehow there are 3 database option for me to choose, which are Master, MSDB and SID (SAP DB).
I just wonder what are they.
My concern is which of the above options consists all the customizing data in IMG.
    Please advise.
    regards,

    Hi Abraham,
Data is in SID (sap db) but if possible you choose all three in one go. Otherwise take backup of SID

  • SAP Backup using Unix commands / tools

    Hi,
We want to include file system backup process as part of our backup strategy. To test the waters, we are planning to take a backup of the at filesystems level. Following are the filesystems in our production systems. We have a test server (hostname is different), without any filesystems created beforehand. I want to know: 1. Which filesystems will be required from the below:
Filesystem    GB blocks      Used      Free %Used Mounted on

    2. Is it possible to directly backup the filesystems (like /dev/oracleGSPlv)? This requirement is because, when I backup (using tar) /oracle, all the folders in /oracle, like /oracle/GSP, /oracle/GSP/sapdata1 etc, are also backed up. I do not want it. I would like to backup the filesystems directly.
    3. Which unix backup tools are used to backup the individual filesystems?
    4. How do we restore the filesystems to the test server? Thanks for your advise. Abdul Edited by: Abdul Rahim Shaik on Feb 8, 2010 12:10 PM

    Hi,
I am not sure about your OS as you have not mentioned it...
If it is HP-UX then you can use "fbackup" backup for filesystem...
and IGNITE to backup volume groups..
fbackup will backup the filesystem only... but IGNITE backup creates bootable media for recovery...
With IGNITE (make_tape_recovery) backup you can backup individual volume group.
you can see the man pages for the details...
    #man fbackup
    #man make_tape_recovery
It will be more easy to guide you if you provide your OS and Filesystem layout and what you need to backup...
If you still want to use "tar" command for backup, use "--no-recursion" option to backup single directory
    Regards.

  • SAP Backup in Symantec Netbackup envirnoment

    Hi All,
In my new implementation, my client already have setup of Symantec netbackup environment for exchange server and file server backup.
We have to use same backup solution for our SAP systems also ( SAP is based on AIX6.1 and Oracle 10g).
Now my doubt is, can we also get /rmt0  in my AIX machine by this backup solution. As tape library is connected to HOST1 and SAP is running on HOST2.
Because as per my knowledge and refering to some interesting threads, To do direct backup on tape by using DB13, we need to do backup test by OS commands.
Please provide a solution if anybody faced same situation or how I should resolve it with your expert suggestions.
    Regards,
    Ramesh.

    Hi,
For you requirement, we would require  separate SAP client of Symantec netbackup, then you will get a backint file which acts like a mediator between SAP brtools and netbackup. There are some profiles to be changed as well as some changes need to be done at netabackup level.
