SAP BO & Universe.

Dear All,
Pl.let know about Universe in Businessobjects for the following:
what is the role of universe?
Is it mandatory to install universe to use any of the BO tools viz Crystal Reports, Xcelsius, Polestar, Voayager and any tools from the GRC solutions, EPM solutions.
What is the advantage of the same?
Can any of the tool be connected with the database without universe?
How it is maintained and what is the schedule?
Do end user need to learn to create and use universe?
Is certification available for the same?
What is the architecture of universe vis-avis SAP/nos SAP database and BO tools?
Is a seperate server necessary for the same, or it is part of the BO server with other tools and software>
Any link or answers is welcome!!!
Yours Truly
K Sengupto

HI,
The answer to your queries are:-
1) The role of universe is to hide the technical complexity between the database and the End user.
It helps in connecting the database and also to fetch the data with out giving the end user see the complexity behind it
2) NO, Universe is used mostly for the webi reports. However you can create crystal report based on universes.
3) The advantage is It gives the enduser a user friendly environment to work
4) No end user does not need to learn about creating universe. If your DBA can create the universe and tell the users to create report based on the universe
5) BO certification is available
6) No server needs to be installed for the same

  • How to use Results from Another Query for SAP BW universes

    Hi Everyone,
    I have two SAP BI universes.In my First universe I have Sales Doc no (dimension) and Orderqty (Measure) and in my second universe I have Sales Doc no(Dimension) and BillQty (Measure).
    Here in my first dataprovider I have 1200 rows of data and in second dataprovider I have 75,000 rows. The report should fetch only the BillQty details that matches to corresponding  Sales doc no in first data provider.
    I want to place all these fileds into a single report like as shown.
    (Datarpovider1)                (Datarpovider1)                    (Datarpovider2)
    *Sales Doc No*               Orderqty                           BillQty
    Here I am able to generate single report using merge dimension but it is leading to performance issues. I want to restrict the values at query level by passing the First dataprovider Sales doc no to second Data provider Sales doc number using Results from Anothery Query feature so that It can fetch only the matching records.
    I tried it but it was giving the follwing error:
    A filter contains a wrong value. You cannot run this query. (Error: WIS 00007)
    How Can I get rid of this error. Can we use Results from Anothery Query option for OLAP universe. Are there any limitation on it.
    All this I am doing in Webi Rich Client.
    Appreciate your help
    Thanks &in Advance
    Kiran Saka

    Hi Kiran,
    I think the filter has a wrong operand. For example, a filter with an empty constant, or a filter that deals with numeric values is defined with an alphanumeric value.Check out for this.

  • Setting a Prompt value for KeyDate in WebI on SAP OLAP universe

    I have a webi report which has as its dataprovider a query against an SAP olap universe against a BEx query which has the KeyDate parameter exposed.
    Iu2019d like to get at this prompt from the SDK.
    In infoview if I run the report it pulls up the keydate prompt (a special dialogue which seems to be implemented as part of the connection definition) - this prior to pulling up the full prompts dialogue and showing all universe based @prompt filters.  In WebI I can see the prompt value entered using =UserResponse("dp.kd.value") .   So it does seem to see the keydate as a prompt of some sorts.
    I've got a little jsp that allows me to set prompts very nicely (and packeaged as a jar in the CMC that schedules ok as well) but when I put it against a report with a key date u201Cpromptu201D it just wonu2019t see it.  When I call a getCount() as below it returns 0.
    oDocumentInstance.getDataProviders().generateQueries();
    Prompts oPrompts = oDocumentInstance.getPrompts();
    out.print(oPrompts.getCount());
    This is all in an attempt to get around the scheduler limitations of key date which would give me two queries, two universes and two reportsu2026 one report for scheduling (using a customer exit to set key date) and a second for user refresh  (with a prompted key date)  which would all be rather messey to say the least!
    So any cunning ideas on how I can get hold of this key date thingymebob in the SDK?
    (ps. "Fixed in V4" would be nice to hear as an aside to thisu2026 In playing with the ramp up Iu2019ve got the same issues however so Iu2019m not to hopefull )
    Thanks!
    Jeremy.

    Hi,
    First I think you have to create a support ticket because normally the object in the universe must be generated with data data type nad it is not the case.
    We are awere of some limitations with data types.
    Secondly, if you want to have users entering date you have to specify date in the prompt data type like this:
    <OPTIONAL><FILTER KEY="[PERIOD SD].[DB Full Date].[DB Full Date]"><CONDITION OPERATORCONDITION="Equal"><CONSTANT CAPTION="@Prompt('Enter Date ','D',,mono,free)"></CONSTANT></CONDITION></FILTER></OPTIONAL>

  • Custom Sort of Duplicated row walues in Webi based on SAP BW Universe

    It is a duplicate thread i have already posted in Integration kits - SAP section.
    This is regarding custom sorting of row value which are duplicated in Webi which is based on SAP BW Universe.
    I have created Webi Report based on Characteristic structure. Using Alerter I provide some space for child node to notify it as child node below a parent node.
    Please see a sample table below:
    AAAA
    onpeak
    midpeak
    offpeak
    BBBB
    onpeak
    midpeak
    offpeak.
    If I enable Avoid duplicate row aggregation, i will be able to see duplicate rows for "onpeak" etc. Since Webi does a default sorting, I have to make a custom sort to replicate the structure followed. And in custom sort i dont see duplicated rows, and i see only one "onpeak". Accordingly if I try to sort using custom sort, then the result will be
    AAAA
    onpeak
    onpeak
    midpeak
    midpeak
    offpeak
    offpeak
    BBBB.
    Please let me know if anyone has any solution for this.
    I have already created report with modifying the row names in backend by adding letter before its value for example "1offpeak" for the duplicated row and then removing the letter "1" in webi using substring. But i know this is the crude way of doing it.

    I have changed the naming convention in BI structure by introducing a white space before the name to avoid duplication and used it in report. Not a good solution anyway.

  • Best practices for Refreshing Unv Structure for SAP based universes

    This may sound basic and I apologize for asking this, but the refresh structure in SAP based universes is somewhat different from noraml universes.
    Here is what i'd like to do:
    - Hide all the L00 objects.
    - Rename all the L01 objects and move them to a new Class.
    - Change some of the detail (attribute) objects to dimension objects.
    - Hide the format and Unit for key figures.
    - Hide all of the classes/subclasses  that get automatically generated when a SAP based universe is created.
    I have noticed that when I do the above and refresh the universe, it assumes that all these objects have gone missing from the original classes and adds them back to the universe.
    I also want to make sure that if the select of an object gets updated and the object is re-named, then it should automatically pick up the change.
    Lastly, I have some reports which were built prior to this renaming. I want to make sure that the reports do not break.
    Thanks,
    Kashif

    Hi,
    This thread is really old.
    Yes it was a common problem back in the earlier XI 3.x days . a lot of bugs in this area were eliminated by the time of XI 3.1 SP03 FP3.x   -  you don't quote your version.
    Actually, you need to be aware that a refresh structure is often not needed, and can corrupt the olap universe . Pls check out Note 1278216 - What are the best practices for OLAP Universe Change Management when using SAP Integration Kit?
    in essence :
    Only use 'Refresh Structure' functionality If:
    - A new Object (Dimension/Characteristic) has been added to the BEx query (Rows/Columns/Free Characteristics)
    - A new Variable Restriction has been added to the Bex query Filters
    Do not use 'Refresh Structure' functionality after:
    - Having modified a STRUCTURE in BEx. i.e. 'Detail view of Formula' or 'Details of Selection', or changing the General Description of structure members.
    - Doing manual actions on objects/classes in the OLAP Universe like:  Move ; Cut/Paste ; Drag/Drop ; Hide ; Delete.
    (because these workflow can lead to corruption)

  • Where to find the timeout setting for connecting to SAP Bi Universe in Power Query for Excel

    Hi All,
    I am trying to connect a SAP BI Universe. I am able to login to the environment and get the list of folders. But on trying to use the universe inside the folder, I am getting a time out error. The time out happens exactly at 100 seconds always.
    DataSource.Error: SapBusinessObjects: The operation has timed out
    Can you let me know if any setting can be done to avoid this timeout and get the universe into power query?

    I have the same problem with Version: 2.17.3850.242. It times out after 100 seconds.
    In addition, I couldn't report it by sending a frown. Get the following error message

  • YTD, MTD, Prior Year, Prior Month calculations in SAP BW Universe

    I am finding the SAP BW based universe a totally different animal so far and my question comes from my inexperience in this domain.
    In a normal universe, one can use CASE Statement and Calendar or Time table to help do these calculations. Since BW based universes are based on a super BEx query, how are these calculations done in the universe? Are these calculations done in the BEx query itself?
    Are there any standards of what should be handled on the BEx side vs. what should be handled on the Universe side?
    Also, what's the syntax of a CASE statment or using Substring (or similar function) in a BW universe?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    You can define calculated measures in OLAP universes using MDX language.
    To define a Calculated Measure, users must create manually new Measures in the Universe.
    Calculated Measures definitions are using MDX functions embedded in XML tags.
    In order to create calculated measures, users must to create pure MDX expression emclosed in XML tags: <EXPRESSION></EXPRESSION>
    In this new expression, we authorize to use any Designer function such as:
    u2022     @SELECT
    u2022     @PROMPT
    u2022     @VARIABLE
    The check integrity will validate the XML syntax and any of the Designer functions described above.
    No MDX parser is provided in this version of Universe Designer.
    This paragraph describes how to define calculated measures in MDX and using @Select and @Prompt functions.
    CASE statement is not supported in MDX but you can use IIF statement instead of.
    It is important to notice that the result of a calculated measure/member in SAP BW (using MDX) must be numeric due to a current limitation f the SAP MDX engine.
    Here is 2 samples of an MDX expression using YTD:
        <EXPRESSION>
    SUM(YTD(@Select(Key Figures\Billed Quantity
    </EXPRESSION>
        <EXPRESSION>
    SUM(YTD([Measures].[D3B1M57O3MN5499LF2X9UNHKA]))
    </EXPRESSION>

  • Problem with Variable imported from SAP in universe

    I am using BO XI R3 with SAP based OLAP Universe.
    I am using a BEx query with a variable to create the universe.
    While using the variable in WebI report, the prompt comes but it has no effect in the report. I have noticed that if I select any measure object in the WebI query, then the prompt is working fine. But If I select dimension objects only, then the filter doesn't work.
    I need to see some dimensions only in the report based on the filter prompt. Is there any specific way to achieve that without selecting a measure object in the WebI query panel ?
    I can delete the filter object in the universe and create my own. But why the filter imported from SAP is malfunctioning ?

    Let me elaborate the problem.
    I am using BEx query (version 7) to build the universe.
    In the BEx query, I have one characteristic "Cons Area" in Rows and one key figure "No of Records" in Columns. In the Characteristic Restrictions, I have one variable B_AREA on Cons Area.
    In my universe, by default, I have :
    1. One dimension object L01 Cons Area for the characteristic Cons Area.
    2. One measure object No of Records for the key figure.
    3. Two LOVs LovB_AREA and LovB_AREABase as hidden dimension objects.
    4. One hidden filter object under class Cons Area for the variable. "Use filter as mandatory in query" checkbox is checked and "Apply on universe" is selected.
    The formula of the objects are as below:
    L01 Cons Area : [0BCS_AREA].[LEVEL01]
    No of Records:     [Measures].[D6UXU0FKYVITGHUL4JRNT6XRH]
    LovB_AREA :     [!V000001].[NAME]
    LovB_AREABase :     [!V000001].[CAPTION]
    Filter :
    <OPTIONAL>
         <FILTER KEY="[!V000001]">
              <CONDITION OPERATORCONDITION="Between">
                   <CONSTANT TECH_NAME="@Prompt('B_AREA From','A','Cons Area\LovB_AREABase',mono,primary_key)"/>
                   <CONSTANT TECH_NAME="@Prompt('B_AREA To','A','Cons Area\LovB_AREABase',mono,primary_key)"/>
              </CONDITION>
         </FILTER>
    </OPTIONAL>
    Note : LovB_AREABase has a primary key defined on it as [!V000001].[TECH_NAME]
    Now when I am building a WebI report using this universe, If I select Cons Area Object only, then the prompt is coming but has no effect on the result. The data is not being restricted by the prompt.
    But If I select the measure object along with the dimension object in my WebI report, then the prompt is working fine.
    If I delete the filter from universe and build my own filter in WebI query panel, then it is working absolutely fine.
    I can create a filter object in universe also as below which will work.
    <OPTIONAL>
         <FILTER KEY="[0BCS_AREA].[LEVEL01]">
              <CONDITION OPERATORCONDITION="Between">
                   <CONSTANT CAPTION="@Prompt('B_AREA From','A',,mono,free)"/>
                   <CONSTANT CAPTION="@Prompt('B_AREA To','A',,mono,free)"/>
              </CONDITION>
         </FILTER>
    </OPTIONAL>
    But I want to know why the default filter is not working as expected.

  • SAP and University jointly offered scholarships / bursaries

    Greetings all,
    May I ask - do any universities provide any financial funding to their students within the remit of the UA Program. Two universities in the UK have for the past two years offered an SAP Scholarship / Bursary. University of Surrey offers ten bursaries worth £5,000 each - in effect they reduce the cost of the degree for the student by £5,000 rather than giving them a cash prize. They refer to these as the SAP Scholarships principally because they introduced an MSc an it went from 12 to 60 students by marketing their membership of the UA program.
    Lancaster University does the same with a single scholarship on their IT and the Management of Change degree - reducing the cost by £3,000 and referring it to it as an SAP Scholarship.
    These are of course both marketing approaches as SAP hands over no money itself but they represent a real investment of about £55,000 on the part of the universities as it is real revenue lost. The benefit is that the universities get a huge marketing boost and are able to attract both more students (12 to 60) and better students (in both cases the students have to have been awarded a 'First', or in other words the top rated degree obtainable in the UK.
    I was wondering if any other universities around the world have adopted anything similar and what other marketing / promotional techniques faculty use in collaboration with SAP to attract more and better students.

  • SAP BO universe design tool

    Hi Experts,
    I am new to SAP universe design tool. Please any one tell me difference b/w Alias and context and when these concepts we implement.
    Thanks
    Poorna

    Hi Poorna,
    A context is required if you have more than one route to a table, this would be because you can join to it from more than one table.
    If you really do need the table to be joined twice, from different routes, you can create a copy of the table - an alias - and re-route one of the joins to this.  Doing this eliminates the need for contexts.
    This copy, or alias exists at the BO level and doesn't physically create a copy on your database,  it serves to modify the sql that is generated

    Hi,
        Actually we don't have option to create Universe on ECC tables. But we can create Universe through DATA SERVICES(SAP Module). Go to DATA SERVICES DESIGNER create Data base(blank) Right click and select Import tables and select table names which are available in R3. after completion of importing Right click on DB and select create Universe.
        SAP DS is ETL tool It's version is XI 3.3. search in google.

  • SAP BW Universe OLAP @prompt LOV using object reference not working

    I have tried to follow Didier MAZOUÉ's "[OLAP universes best practices|https://boc.sdn.sap.com/node/20081]" document to create calculated measure in a OLAP universe built on top of a BW cube directly. The objective is to get the revenue figure from the same period of the previous year. I wanted to be able to have a LOV to specify a period when the object is used in a webi report.
    When I hard coded the LOV as a data set as displayed in the following example  (  {'[CD2007009]','[CD2007010]'}  ) The prompt worked as expected.
    (PARALLELPERIOD(.[LEVEL01],1,[0FISCPER].@Prompt('Period?',A,{'[CD2007009]','[CD2007010]'},mono,free)),[Measures].[0G_AERLOS])</EXPRESSION>
    When I build my expression using an object referece as ( 'TimeFiscal year period' ), I was given an error msg saying "invaid prompt definition". I verified my spellings and syntax and they were correct based on the examples provided by the best practice document.
    (PARALLELPERIOD(.[LEVEL01],1,[0FISCPER].@Prompt('Period?',A,'TimeFiscal year period',mono,free)),[Measures].[0G_AERLOS])</EXPRESSION>
    Is there anything obvious that I missed. Or there are some extra configuration I have to do on SAP BW or Universe side?

    Hi  Mr. MAZOUÉ,
    After a few days of struggling with this particular prompt issue, I finally figured out what was wrong with it. The object reference in the @prompt function is not able to process object references in a subclass correctly.
    For example:
    @Prompt('Period?','A','TimeFiscal year periodL01 Fiscal year period',mono,free)
    The 'Fiscal year period' is a subclass under the main class 'Time'. If you use this prompt function in a MDX expression, it parse correctly. But it generates a prompting failure when referencing the object with the embeded prompt function in a webi report.
    However, if I move the 'L01 Fiscal year  period' object underneath the 'Time' class and change the prompt as @Prompt('Period?','A','TimeL01 Fiscal year period',mono,free). I was able to get a list of values when I designed a webi report using the object.
    This seems to me is a limitation from the current OLAP Universe implementation.
    Looking forward to your feedbacks!
    thanks

    Hi,
    I am trying to connect sap BO and xcelsious , i can connect to Central Management console, but i cant connect to a universe because the default universe folder structure is not shown in the selection screen.
    only the public folder is shown and i cant select any universe.
    I can export report to BO from xcelsious.
    please help
    Regards
    Aflal

    hi,
    As Anesh said, you can't connect to Universe/WEBI directly from Xcelsius 2008.
    Also, Based on the below steps you are performing, you will be able to select only Excel sheet as data source from Enterprise folders.
    Xcelsius -> Data -> Import from Platform -> Login ->
    You can select the excel sheet (if any) exists in the Public Folders but not Universe/WEBI.
    Xcelsius 2010 (Dashboard Design 4.0) has the capability to directly connect to Universe without QaaWS.
