SAP db upgrade to Oracle 10G 64 bit - Dedicated or Shared Server ?

We current run 32bit servers ( approx 150 users ) and plan to migrate to ECC 6.0 on 64bit bit server. Question about upgrade from Oracle 9.2.0.8 32bit to 10.2.0.4 64 bit . Database upgrade Oracle 64 bit should be Dedicated or Shared Server? 
My understanding ( limited), is Oracle 64bit dedicated server connection has the dedicated resource so whether or not a user is doing work the connection remains allocated to that user. So for example, in our case a small Windows "shop" will needs around 2MB of kernel space. So 150 threads, for 150 dedicated server connections, approx 150 x 2MB RAM. Correct ? 
Whereas Shared server the user connection is shared, that is user is connecting by dispatchers and when a user is idle his resource can be used by other users, thus lessen the load on system. So in this case maybe 5 dispatcher processes and 30 shared server processes to service the 150 sessions of the 150 users which seems very effective to me . My main concern however is with some of the Finance people who get problems with huge COPA and SIS reports now which is why we are moving to 64bit OS/DB/SAP 
Question is which does SAP ECC 6.0 support ( or recommend ) Oracle 64 bit Dedicated or Shared Server db migration ?

Never heard that anyone uses shared Server Setup with SAP.
With SAP, it is NOT the user having a DB connection.
It is the workprocess, and it is keeping it even if all users are idle.
You allways have dedicated Oracle processes for SAP Workprocesses.
The rather old note 70197 states, that Oracle MTS (multi threaded server)
allowed, but you are on your own to configure it and there are some pitfalls.

Migration from Oracle 9i 32 bit to Oracle 10G 64 bit on Windows 2003 Server

I am working on migrating Oracle 9i 32 bit to Oracle 10G 64 bit on Windows 2003 from Old server to new server. We have db around 500 GB and 3 schemas. I installed Oracle 10G on new server, created tablespaces, schema's blah blah and now doing export and import at schema level from old server to new server.
Import is taking more than 4 to 5 hours on new server. My manager is saying, window time is bit longer and he wants me to try possiblities to make this process faster. Can some one help me on this, to use the best possible method to complete this process faster?
Will below step work, if I try?
If I install, oracle 9i and 10g both on new server in different home directories and take the hot backup from old machine and restore on new machine in 9i home directory and use the upgrade configuration assistant from 10g and do the upgrade? Pls advice.

I have one question in below steps:
To migrate an Oracle9i or older database to an Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1) database for 64-bit Windows:
1 Perform steps 1 - 11 in "Migrating an Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1) Database".
2 Shut down the database on the 64-bit computer:
SQL> SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
3 Start the database migration:
SQL> STARTUP MIGRATE;
4 Migrate the database as described in Chapter 3, "Upgrading a Database to the New Oracle Database 10g Release" in Oracle Database Upgrade Guide.
In step 4, it says, migrate database as described in chapter 3. In chapter 3, it says, to do the upgrade the process using dbca or manually. Pls confirm whether do the upgrade process after issuing startup migrate or not.

Problems: install oracle 10g 32 bits on RH 5.8 x64

Hello,
Someone has given me an oracle 10g 32 bits to install on a Redhat 5.8 64 bits server (no other server available).
I have a lot of errors during the installation process
exemple:
INFO: /usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /oracle/client/10x_32/lib/libxml10.a when searching for -lxml10
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lxml10
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
I installed libxml10 64 and 32 bits on the system !
I would like to know if this configuration is POSSIBLE ???!
If yes, what is the solution / process to fix these compli. problems :-|

I've never seen any 32-bit software that DIDN'T run on a 64 bit OS, as long as the necessary libraries are installed.

And why are you installing a a version of Oracle that is out of support?
And as long as you have a 64-bit OS, why would you want to run a 32-bit version of Oracle?

I have installed Oracle 10g 32 bit on Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. I installed both client and database. I have another remote server running oqacle 10g which is working fine. I am able to connect to this server from an xp machine.
On the windows 7 machine I can open the Enterprise Console or Sqlplus, provide login credentials. After clicking OK to connect, the enterprise console disappears or closes. Tried several times.
Is there a patch for oracle 10g 32 bit on windows 7 64 bit.

Oracle 10g 64 bit general query

Hi,
I have installed the oracle 10g 64 bit server on a windows x_64 2003 server.
I did not find the 'ORacle.DataAccess.dll' at all in the bin directory.
Is it that i need to install another patch or package to get that as my client needs that DLL to connect to .
Any suggestions are welcome.

Difference between Oracle 10g 64 bit /Oracle 10g 32 Bit Windows

Hi all
We are using 10g Oracle 32 Bit windows as well as Oracle 10g 64 Windows at some installations.
Now we tested these two systems in our office for Testing purpose on two similar machines i.e
Intel i3 with 4 GB RAM. Database size approx 4GB
We had the feeling that :-
a) Oracle datafile Filesize limitation may be there in 32 Bit system but we saw that physically around 3.5 GB datafile size
is created in 32 Bit windows also
b) Data Fetching Speed -.We thought that data fetching speed would be higher in 64 Bit machine. But we proved to
be wrong. Our sample data had approx 7 Millions records (based on Client Live data for 3 years) total in around 20 transaction tables. Further there were other additional 100-150 tables but very smaller ones just master tables
We used the same client end machine and same Front end and same queries on both servers. To our surpriise - We got the almost similar results in terms of data fetching time in both the 32 Bit as well as 64 Bit windows with similar Oracle 10g 32 bit and Oracle 64 Bit respectively
Further we find that Anti Virus Programme which may be any say Symatentic or other - troubles much more in Windows 64 Bit environment as compared to Windows 32 Bit environment from settings point of view.
Kindly advise as to
a) Whether our above observations are correct
b) Now under what situations should we use Oracle 10g 64 Windows as compared to Oracle 10g 32 Bit windows

Is there any script provided by oracle which I can run on existing Oracle 10G standard edition to upgrade to enterprise edition after completing the licensing formalities or do I need to install Oracle 10g Enterprise edition from scratch and then migrate my data.

You will not need to perform any data migration to upgrade to EE. The diffetence between standard en enerprise editions are the features offered. When you upgrade you can use the same set of files you used to install standard edition and just add the enterprise edition features you want to use in the 'Custom' section of the Universal Installer.

SQL Server 2005 (64 bit) returns truncated text from Oracle 10g (64 bit)

Hi all,
I'm no expert in Oracle so I desperately need your advice.
I'm using SQL Server 2005 (64 bit) and trying to pull data from a Oracle 10g (64 bit) server. I am able to connect to the Oracle server with no problems.
The problem came when I was trying to pull a text column (I think it's BLOB in Oracle) from the Oracle server. The results came back BUT truncated to only 100 characters. (This is a column containing event logs so the text is really really long...)
As you may already know, Microsoft is not providing the driver for this case (which is insanely ridiculous!!!). There is no standard “Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle” which we would normally use to establish a linked server connection to Oracle. Instead, we had to install the provider given by Oracle (Oracle Provider for OLE DB).
I have tried to Google for solutions but didn't find much. Please help! :(

If this is a one time activity, you need to find a migration utility which will do the job for you. SQL Developer is available had your case been the other way round (migrate from SQL Server to Oracle).

Since in the company I work in we're still using Oracle 8.1.7 and I'd like to advise to upgrade to Oracle 10g, in addition of assistence advantages (since 8.1.7 is no longer supported), could you tell me briefly which are the main technical advantages from the viewpoint of Pl/Sql programming as a whole? I have to to write up a document where to point out the advantages we could get by upgrading to 10g. For example up to now I've thought of: dbms_scheduler, further sql for analisys.

Oracle 10g 64-bit (Microsoft Server 2003 64-bit) showing as 32-bit

Hi there,
This is my first post so go easy with me!
I have built a Oracle 10g 64-bit Standard Edition DB (10.2.0.1) on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 64-bit Standard edition, all is fine, except when I go in to the Host configuration through OEM it seems to think the host system is 32-bit Server 2003 (Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Server 5.2 Service Pack 2 (32-bit)) when it most definietely isn't.
The problem that this seems to cause is that it says the memory size is 4092MB, rather than the 16Gb that is present on the Server, meaning that the Performance Analysis alerts shows "Significant virtual memory paging was detected on the host operating system."
The PROCESSOR_IDENTIFIER correctly states it has a System Environment EM64T Family 15 Model 6 Stepping 8, GenuineIntel (2 x physical dual-core Xeon processors).
Exiting out through sqlplus shows "Disconnected from Oracle Database 10g Release 10.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production" so it definitely is the correct version!
I can't see any problems anywhere, I am going to install the latest service pack for Oracle (The operating system is patched up and upto date) to see if this makes any difference, but as this is a standard straight forward install I'm now very confused, and thought I would ask here incase anyone else has had this problem, or anyone has any ideas!?

Sorry for not getting back sooner with a reply!
Since the 10.2.0.3 patch, our Oracle usage is now up at 8gb so doesn't sound like we are having the same problem as yourself, although we are getting the same message "Significant virtual memory paging was detected on the host operating system." like yourself but with no recommendations, although I can't see what the problem is now causing this, and doesn't appear to be causing any actual problems. Are you still having your 4gb limitation problem?
Does anyone else have this problem with Oracle 10.2.0.3 64-bit on Windows Server 2003 64-bit platforms? I'm waiting for someone to say 10.2.0.4 will fix this!
