SAP FI/CO Functional Consultant

Dear Freinds,
I am a Chartered Accountant from India & have got about 17 years of work experience in different industires (Manufacturing, Retail & Consumer Finance) & currently working in middle-east as Finance Controller. I can very easily validate the accounting implications of business transactions in an ERP environment. I wish to capitalize on my practical experience in the field of Finance & Accounting by switching myself FI/CO Funactional Consultant's role on a full time basis. I do not have any knowledge of configuration so far. I have been surfing through various websites & found lots of contradoctory information.
I will be much obliged if some one can help me find answers to the following :
Q. Given my background, would you recomend the shift into this new area?
Q. Do I need to join some classroom configuration training program? or self study at home will be enough?
Q. Would you recomend step by step approach to pursue my goal?

Considering your experience, it is better to get into SAP as the market is growing a lot...eventhough you have functional experience, in order to materialize with Functional Consulting, you will have to undergo classes...SAP themselves conduct classes using various business partners and you can join them to understand the configuration bit...For pursuing your goal, first step would be to join a class on understanding the indepth knowledge on SAP...Since the market requires lot of consultant, but still the requirement is majorly for expereinced consultants and for achieving that you will have to work hard to gain that experience in SAP...At the time of doing the course please ensure that you keep continuing with your existing job.

Its clear that there are consultants with a shameful behavior, overselling themselves. But, in the other side that Jeyakanthan
tell us (an ABAPer with strong functional skills). If you are a functional with 10/15 years of experience, with 2 or more modules and you have ABAP skills (not all, of course, you develop your own enhancements/BADI/BTE, your ALV lists, perhaps you have problems with smartforms -ie: you are slow in the development of forms-, a little bit of ABAP OO, you are able to do traces and check bottlenecks...) ¿How do you sell yourself? ¿How do you improve your possibilities in the market?

As a functional consultant you will review test cases and run it on interface and verify setails are coming out accurately as an output from interface based on functional specification you have developed.

Career in SAP MDG for functional consultants.

Can a functional consultant with no ABAP skills learn MDG ? What skills are required to become MDG consultant ?

Yes functional consultant can take SAP MDG and work on that. It is just configuring and mapping master data according to different SAP and Non-SAP systems master data. The market is very slow in MDG because big companies only want to implement for master data harmonization due to heterogeneous environment. If you do a job search, companies posted only less jobs. Think before you take the decision but if you stand for 5 years down the line this MDG will have a big market in the world. So you need a patience if you are taking this module.

SAP HANA for functional consultants

I have rich experience of 9+ yrs in SAP MM/WM/SD/SRM (certified in these modules) (and over all 16+ yrs) all through implementations and rollouts.
Now I am feeling stagnated in my career; wanted to make it more techno-functional; SAP HANA is a buzz word.
Wanted to move into it after doing certification; but have the following queries:
Will it be a right decision to move into it without any prior BI/BW experience.
Will I get an entry into new projects of SAP HANA.
Does BI/BW experience preferred over other SAP module/functional experience; in which case it will be a difficult enviro to compete.
I have explored job portals and every one wants prior BI/ABAP/Tech experience.
I am worried will I be loosing by entering into HANA or shall I go further in my logistics area only for explorations.
The market I am working in is US and Australia.
Please suggest;

It will really be helpful if I can get some insight from the perspective of
a functional consultant as nothing concrete has been said on the approach to be
followed.
The answer were helpful but I am looking for more suggestive help; in that
respect I wrote additionally so that I can reach out to more people for a
career changing decision.

Role of a functional consultant in Middleware

Can any one please tell me the role of a SAP Sales & Service functional consultant in Middle ware. As of i know we take care of the Initial load of the objects and monitor the Bdoc's, Objects..etc..
Can any one share the experience as of why we get errors in the middle ware and why should we monitor the Bdoc's or Ques. What is the reason for failing BDoc's.

Bdoc's are the documents which flow from CRM to R/3 viceversa , We must check the queues since it may cause problem in later stage for releasing.

Dear All,
I am shifting towards SAP functional consulting job. I want to know the Pro's and con's of SAP functional consultant job.

You can unload a lot of work on the technical consultant / developer and let him join the logical dots of what you're trying to design, and you get paid 50% more on top, now how's that?
All you need to do is look business and talk business.

There aren't any major changes to PTM functionalities from 4.7 to 6.0. I hope your system is already using IT 2006 instead of IT 0005. Under functional role, you are required to configure/test any functional upgrade and manage data.

- defining the core processes
- test and customize them
- release the customizing transports for production

Since each project is different and each system has a different customizing/configuration it's not possible to generate a step-by-step guide what you have to do. The requirements are usually defined by the business.
Your project leader should be able to give you a project plan (e. g. by using Solution Manager Upgrade Project) where you can get an idea based on the system you're going to upgrade.

There is no limit to explore in MDG. As a functional consultant you are responsible for -
1. Defining scope of MDG
2. Set up governance process - Workflow
3. Configuration - MDG (Activate services - functions / role set up / Data modelling / process modelling / replication set up ) - You have to involve in each of these activities with technical. You can also do it on your own.
4. Testing - end to end testing and training
5. Cut over activities - data load etc
In these areas, you have to contribute 100% and work with entire team (tech) for set up.
As mention, you can explore a lot in MDG.

How to shift from ERP tester to SAP Functional Consultant?

Hi friends,
I'm currently working as a Software tester and have worked with ERP applications(Not SAP) for more that 2.5 years now. I do have a decent domain knowledge of ERP at present.
I want to learn SAP and make a career as a functional consultant.
My question is: If i do a course in one of the functional modules of SAP will i be able to get a job in SAP with my prior experience of ERP?

Based on your interest you can choose any module ( technical / functional ).Each module has its own importance in real time.
If you want learn more about any / preffered module, you can always access help.sap.com which will give you a list of results and among them you can choose whichever link you want to start studying on that subject.
Based on your research choose a right module which suits you better.
It might depends on your Interest also, Like if you are interested more on Programming side then think about Technical module ABAP.
Or if your interest is more on Functional side ( Requires business process knowledge on various / any industries & configuration skills in ERP ).
Based on your experience I believe that the below functional modules will be more suitable for people who has some Business / Domain / experience . Just think & try to follow the SAP Help to take a right decision.
MM – MATERIAL MANAGEMENT ( More about Purchasing related activities / Goods receipts / Inventory Management / vendor management )

Please let me know should I even pursue SAP MM?

No no, its not about feeling bad. I need to know everything in and out. It might be a career swipe for me.
Its "pursue" not purchase - I meant should I begin training for SAP MM.
From your response Mr. Dev, seems like your acknowledging to the idea that I should start SAP MM.
Could you however evaluate it on the basis of my qualification and experience? Would appreciate it immensely.

SAP Functional consultant roles with S/4 HANA

in the current scenario there is huge role for SAP functional consultants, along with ABAPers and BASIC guys, in implementations,
with SAP S/4 HANA (both on premise and cloud) would there be similar roles available ?
we can see there is some talk about ABAP in HANA on premise, but could not find much information about the SAP Functional consultants roles in SAP S4 HANA (both on-premise and cloud)
what do you guys thing, would there still be a IMG in S4 HANA and there will be great needed for SAP functional consultants in new SAP Implements with S4HANA

so its the customer who will drive this....
if every customer moves to cloud (both HEC or public cloud) - SAP Functional consultants will be obsolete by 2025
even if there are some onPrem, due to pre-packaged S/4, there will be very less work
so the 40K odd SAP Functional consultants careers would be ended by 2025

Have a look at some of the blogs collected under SAP Career Blog Links. Your best route to becoming an SAP Functional specialist is to work your way into the support group of the company in which you already work. Experience is more important than the certificate. Get your experience supporting SAP as an SAP CRM specialist first, THEN get your certificate.
If you try to do the reverse, you're signing up for a lot of heartache (see blogs in the previous link page). Whatever you do... do NOT quit your job to sign up for training/certification on the hopes that you'll find a job easily after you are certified. End user experience is better than nothing, but does not necessarily "count" as experience when you're trying to get a job for the first time as a functional specialist.
Only AFTER you've been a specialist for a while does the end user experience add clout to your credentials as you can say " I've experienced the FULL spectrum of SAP" while folks who never had the end user experience seem somewhat lacking by comparison.
So *eventually*, end user experience + specialist experience + certification = more than the sum of the parts.
