SAP IQ CPU(core) to disk I/O ratio

Good Day,
Question regarding CPU to disk I/O relation:
1) Initally  we had  two SAP IQ 12.7 instances  runniing on a Linux x64 Red Hat 5.5 machine  with 16 cores / 256Gb RAM
2) Now we  moved to SAP Iq 15.4 on the same macine but leaving just this one instance with same # of cores / RAM available
This instance is heavily used  in terms of  data load , query and reporting during the day.
Regarding to  CPU to  disk I/O ratio, is it valid or  not  to assume the follwing:
If we bumped up the  number of cores( now 16 available to IQ), the number of of disk I/O request will also will be increased, assuming the same workload and number of users connected?
There is an old  EMC Symmetrix storage involved here , which wasn't upgraded
Thank you
Regards

With IQ 15.4, a rough sizing that I use is 25-50 MB/sec of IO needed per core.  With IQ 16 that gets increased even higher.  If you have a heavy workload, then I would assume around 50 MB/sec.  In today's disk world, a disk can sustain about 25 MB/sec of random IO, at best.  This takes us to needing about 2 disks per core on the system.  If you find that main and temp are both being used quite a bit then I would recommend having 2 disks per core per storage type (main, temp).

  • Skype using 100% of CPU and hard disk resources, c...

So, lately, I switched the hard drives in my computer to migrate from Windows XP and install Windows Vista to my machine, everything was going alright with my machine, until I decided to install Skype, as it's the main communications line with me and the internet, and I noticed it now takes up pretty much all of my CPU and hard disk resources when loading all of my contacts and messages after installation, but it finished loading them, and it still uses a high amount of my resources. Skype uses approximately 250MB of memory (Which is kind of high on a system like mine..), it maxes out the processor at around 95-100% utilization, and the hard drive light is on full, as I hear the read head spazzing out on the thing anyways. I was wondering, is this an issue with the latest version of Skype? I can't use older versions since Skype/Microsoft decommissioned them, and it won't even let me log in to them. Could someone possibly help me with this?
My machine specifications are as of follows if it has anything to do with the issue.:
    MSI MS-6741 K8MM-ILSR MicroATX Socket 754 Motherboard
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.00GHz Single-Core Socket 754 Processor (Currently overclocked to 2.15GHz)

  • Windows XP Mode (Virtual PC) only uses half a CPU core/thread.

Not only does windows xp mode not support multiple cores, to me it looks like it only uses half a core/thread.
I noticed this because I just setup windows xp mode (virtual pc) on my computer.  I updated it, joined it to our domain and then installed our legacy ERP software.  This ERP software was designed and programmed to run on windows 98 or 2000, I can't
remember right now, but its hardware requirements are very low.  This software runs very slows in the virtual pc, with the processor being the problem.
Matching the processor spike on the virtual pc using both performance monitor and task manager I compared it to task manager running on the host (my windows 7 machine).  The spikes in cpu matched one of the threads on my i7 processor (I use threads
because an i7 has 8 threads but only 4 cores).  To my surprise when the CPU reached near 100% on the virtual PC the same spike on the host was only about 50% of the cpu thread.
The host has a i7 950, 3.07GHz processor.  So this means that the virtual pc can only use up to 1.5GHz.  I have not run into the problem reported in other posts on this forum where the CPU is always at 50% or 100% on the virtual PC because when
their is no activity the CPU drops to 10% or less and stays there.
I will now have to use vmplayer, problem is having enough xp licenses for all users.
Was anyone else aware of this?

You can't use a half a thread.  Windows VPC uses one core at 3.07GHz, there's no halving the speed of the CPU.
The only way WVPC would use a lower clock speed is if there is power management throttling the CPU speed down.  Do you have a power management setting throttling your CPU?  Are you sure the problem is the CPU and not disk or network related?
Task manager on the host is not a very accurate way to determine CPU usage of the VM.
If you have the correct version of Windows 7 (Pro or higher) there are no issues with XP Mode licenses, you get one license included with Windows 7.  There's no restriction requiring you to use XP Mode with Windows VPC, it will work under 3rd party
    virtualization solutions.

  • PPro not using all cpu cores evenly

    Hey Guys!
I've been recently trying to optimize my laptop to get better performance.
    I have a Lenovo Y550P -
    i7 Q 720 1.60 GHz
    8GB Ram
Nvidia GT240m video card (1gb ram)
    64 bit windows 7
    500 gb 7200 RPM HDD
I know this is not the ideal setup, but it is what I have.
I have a massive amount of GoPro footage to process, and was having issues shuttling at 1/4 resolution.  I made some tweaks such as:
    removed windows visual effects
    enabled hard drive write buffering
disable CPU core parking (laptop thing)
various tweaks to the services.msc file
"enabled" my video card for cuda =)
This has greatly improved my shuttling for 2x and 4x.  however when I watch the performance monitor I notice it uses CPU cores 4 & 7 significantly more than the other cores.  CPU usage only reaches about 40% during shuttling, yet stutters.
Here is a screen capture of resource monitor on disks:  I'm currently reading the footage from an external USB 3.0 drive (F), scratch disks are set to internal (C).
Here is a screen capture of CPU resources, notice how cpu core 4 (start from 0) has higher usage.
Is there something I can improve on my setup to make my system more efficient, or is all this just because of the HDD bottleneck?  Any advice on improving my limited systems performance would be appreciated.
    Thank you for your time!

    Sorry, here are the images!

  • Firefox is using large amounts of CPU time and disk access, and I need to know how to shut down most of this so I can actually use the browser.

Firefox is a very busy piece of software. It's using large amounts of CPU time and disk access. It puts my usage at low priority, so I have to wait for some time to be able to use my pointer or keyboard. I don't know what it uses all that CPU and disk access time for, but it's of no use to me. It often takes off with massive use of resources when I'm not doing anything, and I may not have use of my pointer for several minutes. How can I shut down most of this so I can use the browser to get my work done. I just want to use the web site access part of the software, and drop all the extra. I don't want Firefox to be able to recover after a crash. I just want to browse with a minimum of interference from Firefox. I would think that this is the most commonly asked question.

Firefox consumes a lot of CPU resources

  • Macbook Pro CPU Core's temperature measurments

    I have a late 2011 15-inch Macbook Pro OS X 10.8.4 with BootCamp installed.
In OS X environment, the CPU core temperatures are around 40 - 44C, while in idle or with a minimum Safari browsing the net.
When in Bootcamp with Windows 7 Professional, in the similar operating/application condition, but the my Macbook's CPU Core Temperatures are always about 52 - 55C (10 degrees higher than in OS X).
While doing heavy stuffs such as Virus Scan, Time Machine, Data Backup, Video Editing etc ... on both environments the CPU core temperatures could go up to upper 80's degree C.
Is it normal ? if so, is there any explanation for 10 degrees warmer while in BootCamp/Windows ?

  • Core Audio Disk too slow or System Overload message

Hi, I hope somebody can help me. I've seen the topics about this already posted, but my situation is a little different. I'm only playing back three tracks of recorded audio and two EXS24 sampler instruments. I have the Logic compressor on my bass track and thats it! My Disk IO meter shows no load at all as well as the audio meter. However, I'm still getting the core audio disk to slow or system overload message. I figure with a dual 2.7 G5 and 2.5 Gigs of ram I should be unstoppable. What's happening?
By the way I'm using Logic Pro 7.1, and my sound card is a Delta 1010 from M-Audio.

  • Core Audio : Disk too slow (prepare)

Can anyone help me. I have created a track that will not bounce
because it always comes up with this error message: Core Audio: disk
too slow (prepare). I cannot bounce tracks individually for the same
reason. I have tried deleting some tracks that i dont need but it still does
the same. I have 700 and something ram. Is this not enough. I have
logic pro 7.1 and am using a few ultrabeats in the song. Know Any
tricks i can get around this problem easily with. Any help would be
    greatly apreciateddd. thanx in advance.

The drives in the rear positions are on an ATA-100 Bus, those in the front are on an ATA-66 bus. The CD is on an ATA-33 bus, and no Hard drives should be sharing the CD cable. ATA-66 and ATA-100 are plenty fast enough not to be a bottleneck, as long as you are not experiencing low-level correctable Disk Errors.
A Disk Error will result in retries, both Hardware and Software, which often produces the data, corrected, after a delay.
My recommendation would be to find a time when you can back up all data from the troublesome drive, and take the \[several hours] to Initialize with the "Zero all Data" option. This writes Zeroes to every data block, then does a read-after-write to check the data.
If the Drive's error correction was required to recover the just-written zeroed data, that block is declared bad, and the drive will make a near-permanent substitution of a nearby spare block for the one found defective. This process has the effect of laundering out marginal blocks and returning the drive to "factory fresh" condition of all good blocks.

  • Load balancing on CPU cores

    Hi,
We have a supermicro server with 2 x E5-2660 processors and 160GB of memory.
The only role assigned to this server is Hyper-V and we have about 100 VMs each with two vCores provisioned on this server.
I checked the cpu load by monioring the %Processor Time counter and noticed that while 10 out of 32 cores are at 100%, 15 of them are below 10%.
I am wondering if it possible to balance the load on the CPU cores to improve the performance and utilize the full processing power of each CPU.

Hyper-V will schedule things appropriately - most likely better than any manual intervention could provide.  It could be the nature of your applications.
Hyper-V does provide the ability to assign memory weightings to different VMs if you really want to get into that.

  • Can Essbase uses SGI 80 CPU core, 960GB super computer Octane III?

Recently SGI annouced a super computer that can support max 20 Intel Xeon X550 series CPU (total 20 * 4 = 80 CPU cores) and 960 GB memory (96GB * 10). Can Essbase support this kind of hardware deployment to gain maximum system performance?
The server can be used for Linux or Windows Server 2008 platform.

Is Essbase supported on Windows Server 2008? If so, why not. Wintel is wintel is wintel.
And I know you would be just the guy for this box. :)
Are you seriously considering this for Essbase? It would be fun to throw some benchmarking tests at a box like that. If your company buys this beast and applies it to Essbase, please tell us all about it, really.
Once upon a time, Hyperion used to taunt Oracle with benchmarking tests against Express or whatever Oracle called Express/OFA back then.
So, how fast do you think Sample.Basic would run on this machine? :)

    [SOLVED]
I just doublechecked the BIOS settings and it had the CPU Core Control set to manual and one core was disabled. I set it to auto again and now both cores are recognized correctly. I don't recall ever touching this setting but at least it works now. Maybe a bios update actually changed the setting or (more probable) a friend of mine.

there just have ONLY ONE CORE %sys 100
the top command show average of all cpu core sys% usage
when the one core sys% is 100%
the system are very slow .
e.g: when I create a database instance used for a long time . over 2 hours
but generally it will be done at most 1 hours or shorteris any type of OS virtualization involved in this environment?

  • Disable CPU core in Solaris 10

    Hi,
can anybody help me to disable cpu core in solaris 10. my server is Sparc T4-1 server (1 physical processor with 8 core 64 threads). I am able to disable threads using psradm, but not sure about disabling core.
    thanks
    Sajith.P.V

You can disable a single core in solaris using "psradm -f <cpu id>"
    man page for psradm
The psradm utility changes the operational status of proces-
sors. The legal states for the processor are on-line, off-
    line, spare, faulted, and no-intr.
An on-line processor processes LWPs (lightweight processes)
and can be interrupted by I/O devices in the system.
An off-line processor does not process any LWPs. Usually, an
off-line processor is not interruptible by I/O devices in
the system. On some processors or under certain conditions,
it might not be possible to disable interrupts for an off-
line processor. Thus, the actual effect of being off-line
might vary from machine to machine.
A spare processor does not process any LWPs. A spare proces-
sor can be brought on-line, off-line or to no-intr by a
privileged user of the system or by the kernel in response
to changes in the system state.
Example 1 Setting Processors to off-line
The following example sets processors 2 and 3 off-line:
    % psradm -f 2 3
Example 2 Setting Processors to no-intr
The following example sets processors 1 and 2 no-intr:
    % psradm -i 1 2
Example 3 Setting Processors to spare
The following example sets processors 1 and 2 spare, even if
either of the processors was in the faulted state:
    % psradm -F -s 1 2
Example 4 Setting All Processors on-line
    % psradm -a -n
Example 5 Forcing Processors to off-line
The following example sets processors 1 and 2 offline, and
revokes the processor bindings from the processes bound to
    them:
    % psradm -F -f 1 2

    Hi,
This error occurred in the page where I used the file upload control. The control was working fine before. We tried installing entire PDK again and then applying the hotfix-1, but nothing worked and then I had to use an URL iview to invoke an ASP .Net application just for uploading the files.
    Thanks
    Swetha
