SAP Kernel patch/Support pack Sequence

Hi,
I wanted to know if i need to follow up any order in applying latest kernel patch & Support Pack.
I have installed WAS 6.40 SR1 & want to upgrade to SPS 16. Before applying support pack do i need to apply latest
kernel ?
Is there any side effects for applying latest kernel patch ?
Kindly help me
Thanks,
ramki

Ramki, as other posts say the kernel update is part of SPS16 & should always be applied. But as to the order... it will most likely come down to business requirements and preference & may change for you from stack to stack.
Be sure to test first in your DEV environment (or similar) & always check the known issues notes which should tell you any patch to kernel dependancies that may dictate what order you have to install things (782140 is the note for WAS6.20, sorry don't have the WAS640 note number handy).
In terms of side effects? In my experience (4.0b - ecc6) the kernel will either work or not work (ie system will or wont start!) If it dosn't work roll back to the previous version (also keep a copy of the exe directory!) & things should all be OK.
Generally we always apply the kernel after the patches where I work (just fits in better with managing downtime on prod systems). However last time we patched the SPAM queue we defined was very large & not compatible with our R3Trans release when using the downtime minimised option (this was stated in the known issues note I mentioned earlier). So the kernel update was done 2-3 weeks before we rolled the patches in, once again just to manage prod system downtime better.
Hope that helps a little
Danny

  • Proper Plan for SAP Support Pack Upload

    Hi Experts,
    We are going for Support pack upload of SAP at your firm.
    Like to get your suggestions on the Plan we have done for going with the update.
    The Present Level of SAP in our server is very low 8 stacks low approx in both the Development Server and Production Server.
    What is the best way to apply them from the below mentioned plan.
    1. shall we go for 1 stack in Development for the required components then test it for 3-4 days then go for the same stack in Production. So that both the server go sync with each other. This way going till the target stack one by one.
    2. shall we go and upload all 8 stacks for the components required in development first one by one and then test the system for all the errors available and then start with the Production. Will there be a transport problem if the system are not in sync for the so many days.
    Please suggest which one shall be best suited  if any other plan can be used for safe and proper update of Support pack.
    Jitesh

    Hi,
    1. shall we go for 1 stack in Development for the required components then test it for 3-4 days
    then go for the same stack in Production. So that both the server go sync with each other.
    This way going till the target stack one by one.
    If Large Support Stack gape is there, then
    1. I would perform system copy of Existing Development System into another separate New Test Server.
    2. Then , I will generate Side Effect Reports based on the Source-to-Target Support Stack gape. You can request such side effect from SMP at https://service.sap.com/side-effects by selecting the solution and by providing source to target SP level per component.
    3.Refer The required SAP Notes regarding OCS Know problems for the support patches. Apply latest SPAM/SAINT Updates. Apply Latest SAP Kernel patches.
    4. Apply the Required Support Package stack after taking successful offline backup of Database.
    5. Perform SPDD - SPAU adjustment and record it in single/Multiple Change requests.
    6. Ask the function team to check the Functionality in new Upgraded TEST system
    7. After Confirmation from the Functional & Technical Team, Apply the same support package stack in existing real DEVELOPMENT system and move that SPAU-SPDD adjustment request.
    2. shall we go and upload all 8 stacks for the components required in development first one by one
    and then test the system for all the errors available and then start with the Production.
    Will there be a transport problem if the system are not in sync for the so many days.
    The same above steps will be applicable here also. Change Requests Transports are not recommended between the systems which are on different Support Patch Stacks. With the above mentioned steps your downtime as well as Development Holiday will be minimized.

  • Latest support pack stack

    Hi ,
    Our system is on  SAP_APPL           604         0003       SAPKH60403       Logistics and Accounting
    Curretnly which one is the latest support pack available and where do we monitor this regularly . i.e Please provide the patch where we can monitor and continously update with latest SAP support stacks.
    regards

    > Curretnly which one is the latest support pack available and where do we monitor this regularly . i.e Please provide the patch where we can monitor and continously update with latest SAP support stacks.
    You have three possibilities:
    1. Check manually using
    http://service.sap.com/patches
    --> Support Packages and Patches - Entry by Application Group
    --> SAP Application Components
    --> SAP ERP
    --> SAP ERP ENHANCE PACKAGE
    --> EHP4 FOR SAP ERP 6.0 / NW7.01
    --> Entry by Component
    --> Central Applications
    --> SAP APPL 6.04
    --> Support Packages
    2. create a maintenance optimizer task to update your system and check which new SPs are available
    3. Check
    http://service.sap.com/sp-stacks
    --> SP Stack Schedule
    And look when SP4 will be available (SAP EHP4 for SAP ERP 6.0)
    The first approach is good for a quick look but it's not advised to separately install only one component. There may be dependencies to other components and you will have then hard time to satisfy them manually.
    According to the schedule SP4 for SAP_APPL 604 is available in second week of october.

    Best regards,

    Hi,
    Please ensure that sapxpg executable is located in your SAP Kernel directory where you have applied new kernel.
    Whats the permission of sapxpg executable ? Check them.
    Also check SM21 , dev_sapxpg and the required Work Process traces along with the testing of  SAPXPG_DBDEST_<hostname> RFC. This will be helpful in finding the possible causes for the same.
    Please refer this[ useful thread|DB 13 (CHECKDB) Can't exec external program (No such file or directory)] which is describing the same symptoms along with this [informative link|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_47x200/helpdata/en/c4/3a80c4505211d189550000e829fbbd/content.htm].

  • Missing IDES ECC5 installation disk for SAP Kernel - MaxDB Version

    Hi,
    Our HQ sent us installation disks for IDES ECC5.  We copied them all onto our server and started installation.  The system is now informing us that it can't find the SAP kernel information.
    I can only assume that we're missing one of the installation disks.
    We're desperate to get this installed and it will take another week for our HQ to send through another disk.  Does anyone know whether we can download this from somewhere?  We have had a look on SAP marketplace but you only seem to be able to download the kernel for Oracle, MSSQL and DB2....no MaxDB.
    Additionally, if there is somewhere in Asia we can download this, then that would be better as we are having internet problems when connecting to Europe and the US.
    Thanks in advance!
    Tristan

    Hello Tristan,
    This is not the correct forum to post your question.
    You was not asked about the database(MAXDB) kernel software.
    You need SAP kernel software
    -> Review the installation guides at service.sap.com/instguides ->
    mySAP Business Suite Applications -> mySAP ERP -> mySAP ERP 2004
    -> SAP ECC 5.0 ->
      Installation Guides of SAP ECC 5.0 SR1
    -> < Please see the steps 'How to Proceed' > ->
    -> MySQL MaxDB
    < Part I: Planning and Preparation
      Part II: Installation and Post-Installation  >
    -> select the documents for the OS of your server.
    And the document from the 'Part I: Planning and Preparation' you will get information that you need the SAP kernel CD & & what is the minimum required version & the reference to the location at the SAP Marketplace to download it, if you don't have the required SAP kernel CD.
    < You could download the CD from service.sap.com/installations ->
    Entry by applicataion group ->
    Installations and Upgrades -> SAP NetWeaver -> SAP NETWEAVER->
    SAP NETWEAVER 04 ->
    Installation and Upgrade ->
    < OS> -> < database > -> CD 'SAP Kernel ... <database><OS>.
    SAP kernel software is database, platform, Unicode specific.   >
    In the 'Part II: Installation and Post-Installation' document you will find the the list of the required DVDs for the SAP system-ABAP installation.
    -> Are you running the installation of the the 'Central Instance', 'Dialog Instance' or 'Database instance' ?
    For the 'Database instance' Installation you need:
    SAP Installation Master DVD
    SAP Kernel DVD
    RDBMS DVD
    SAP Export DVD
    -> What CD/DVD do you have for the installation?
    <  You could download the CDs from service.sap.com/installations ->
    Entry by applicataion group ->
    Installations and Upgrades -> Entry by Application Group
    -> SAP Application Components -> SAP ERP-> SAP ERP 2004 -> Installation and Upgrade -> <OS> ->SAP DB  >
    You could also order the CD, if you have problems with download from the SAP Marketplace.
    Thank you and best regards, Natalia Khlopina

    check in /usr/sap/trans/tmp for the file. it should grow by small
    growths in size.
    Check in usr/sap/trans/log for tp details

  • Idoc Segment Changed- Support Packs

    Hii All
    In our SAp system (SAP ECC 6) support packs were implemented. After the implementation one of the segment of the idoc (Basic Type:- SHPMNT03) got changed infact that segment now does not exist.
    Its a business critical issue, can anyone do let me know what to do in such scenario.
    Thanks & Regards
    Gaurav Manocha

    Somehow I find it hard to believe... The IDoc structure is not supposed to be changed. If there is some kind of an upgrade, then instead of changing the IDoc, SAP creates a new version. That's why we have ORDERS01, ORDERS02, etc. The IDocs are supposed to be downwards-compatible.
    I'd guess that either the standard IDoc was extended in your system and the extension is the one that's missing or there is some kind of a mistake. If it wasn't an extension, you'd definitely should contact SAP about it (check the OSS notes first though - maybe it's already a known issue).

  • SAP kernel vs btools vs oracle version

    we have some questions,
    1. sap ecc ehp4 ready sr1 version, is use kernel 7.01 version, can i upgrade to 7.2 version?
    2. can upgrade brtools version from 7.00 to 7.2 ?
    3. sap ecc ehp4 ready sr1 version, can use oracle 11.2 version on aix, windows, hp-ux?
    thank you everyboy help?

    > i replace brtools 7.2 version on windows, get error "application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect......."
    Check your windows event log. Most likely you'll see there an error like the one described in
    Note 1402510 - Resolving SideBySide Assembly Errors
    and hence you need to fix the ATL library by applying the Windows fix:

  • Components involved on SAP KERNELL

    Hi,
    I want to update the sap kernell. I always update with sapexe, and sapexedb(independent and dependent database), but I need to try to update the kernell, but the last release delivered it´s the 701_117.
    If I want to update I need to try with the package dw+disp package?
    SAP Note 19466 - Downloading SAP kernel patches
    More thanks

    Hello,
    Components of SAPEXE and SAPEXEDB are tested together.
    You can update a kernel component if it's newer than the component of SAPEXE or SAPEXEDB
    but there may be some unknown side effects.
    Component release date is no longer relevant in itself. Sometimes a newer dated SAPEXE
    or SAPEXEDB can contain an older component than a single component with an older release date.
    If you want to find out which version is newer you should check the file versions.

  • Does support pack write over snotes?

    Hi,
    If I have put in SAP notes via transaction snote and the SAP  installs a support pack which may contain or may not contain the SAP note.
    Does the support pack write over the snote?
    Or does it migrate the support pack with the snote?
    Or does the snote like changing code with modification assistant show in transaction SPAU?
    regards
    Baran

    SPAM -> Support pack transaction do the same job has SNOTE.
    And Support pack is a collection of Notes.
    So when SPAM go to the program and see the note is already applied .. SPAM don't do anything (if program is correct and not modified).

  • Sequence of Applying Kernel Patches

    Hi All,
    We have ECC 5.0 (Central Instance) OS:HP UNIX and four Dialog Instances on Windows Platform.
    For Applying the latest kernel patches what should be the sequence, first dialog instances or Central Instance?
    For this landscape is it required that while applying kernel patch Database should be in shutdown mode?
    Regards,
    Prashant.

    Dear,
    >First we have to apply Support pack in the Dialog instance
    Its not first dialog instance.
    Please follow below steps.
    1. shutdown all dialog instances.
    2. take backup of current kernel directory
    3. stop central instance
    4. switch the kernel files from new kernel
    5. start the central instance.If its successfully up with new patch level  then
    6. One by one start the dialog instance.
    Note: If the dialog instances sharing the path of Central instance Kernel directory then no need to do anything on dialog instances. Sapcpe program will copy new kernel to dialog instance local kernel directory automatically while restarting the dialog instances.
    If dialog instances not sharing the path of CI then repeat the same procedure as of CI for DI's.
