SAP MDM, ORACLE MDM, Microsoft MDM and IBM MDM
Could someone discuss the differences and similarities between these MDMs-
SAP MDM, ORACLE MDM, Microsoft MDM and IBM MDM. Who is/will dominate the Market?
Thank you.

Hi priya k ,
These r the details regarding MDMs-SAP MDM, ORACLE MDM, Microsoft MDM and IBM MDM.
SAP Master Data Management
SAP Master Data Management (SAP MDM) enables master data on customers, partners and products to be consolidated and harmonized across the enterprise, making it available to all staff and business partners. A key component of SAP NetWeaver, SAP MDM ensures data integrity across all IT systems.
The SAP NetWeaver Master Data Management (SAP NetWeaver MDM) component of SAP NetWeaver creates the preconditions for enterprise services and business process management. The functionality represents customers, products, employees, vendors, and user-defined data objects in unified form. With SAP NetWeaver MDM, customers can manage master data and supplemental content, such as texts, PDF documents, high-resolution images, or diagrams in a central business information warehouse.
SAP Master Data Management (SAP MDM) is a component of SAP's NetWeaver product group and is used as a platform to consolidate, cleanse and synchronise a single version of the truth for master data within a heterogeneous application landscape. It has the ability to distribute internally and externally to SAP and non-SAP applications. SAP MDM is a key enabler of SAP Enterprise Service-Oriented Architecture. Standard system architecture would consist of a single central MDM server connected to client systems through SAP Exchange Infrastructure using XML documents, although connectivity without SAP XI can also be achieved. There are five standard implementation scenarios:
Content Consolidation - centralised cleansing, de-duplication and consolidation, enabling key mapping and consolidated group reporting in SAP BI. No re-distribution of cleansed data.
Master Data Harmonisation - as for Content Consolidation, plus re-distribution of cleansed, consolidated master data.
Central Master Data Management - as for Master Data Harmonisation, but all master data is maintained in the central MDM system. No maintenance of master data occurs in the connected client systems.
Rich Product Content Management - Catalogue management and publishing. Uses elements of Content Consolidation to centrally store rich content (images, PDF files, video, sound etc.) together with standard content in order to produce product catalogues (web or print). Has standard adapters to export content to DTP packages.
Global Data Synchronization - provides consistent trade item information exchange with retailers through data hubs (e.g. 1SYNC) Some features (for example, workflow) require custom development out of the box to provide screens for end users to use.
History
SAP is currently on its second iteration of MDM software. Facing limited adoption of its initial release, SAP changed direction and in 2004 purchased a small vendor in the PIM space called A2i. This code has become the basis for the currently shipping SAP MDM 5.5, and as such, most analysts consider SAP MDM to be more of a PIM than a general MDM product at this time.

Oracle MDM
Oracle MDM is a core Fusion technology that will enable them to integrate their diverse portfolio of acquired solutions (PeopleSoft, JD Edwards, Siebel, etc.) and allow them to work together much more effectively.MDM is also a key component of Oracles middleware strategy to aggressively target heterogeneous environments solutions running on different databases, operating systems, and using different data warehouse or analytical solutions. Oracle is a leading provider of ERP and CRM applications, but more broadly they are a provider of core platform solutions that help pull together and harmonise all a companys IT assets.
Master Data Management solutions provide the ability to consolidate and federate master information from disparate systems and lines of business into one central data repository or hub. As part of its Master Data Management strategy, Oracle offers solutions that enable customers to synchronise critical information in a single, central location to achieve an accurate, 360-degree view of data, whether from packaged, legacy or custom applications. Oracle offers the following solutions:
Oracle Product Information Management Data Hub Enables companies to centralise, manage and synchronise all product information with heterogeneous systems and trading partners.
Oracle Customer Hub Centralises, de-duplicates and enriches customer data, continuously synchronising with other data sources across the enterprise, to provide a single, accurate, authoritative source of customer information throughout the enterprise.
Oracle Financial Consolidation Hub Allows companies to control the financial consolidation process by integrating and automating data synchronisation, currency translation, inter-company eliminations, acquisitions and disposals.
Clean, consolidated and accurate master data distributed throughout the enterprise can save companies millions of dollars annually. With Oracle, organisations are equipped to leverage the best data management practices available today to help dramatically increase operating efficiencies, improve customer loyalty and ensure corporate governance.
MDM solutions provide the ability to consolidate and federate disparate systems and lines of business into one central data repository. Acxiom is the world's largest processor of consumer data and collects and manages more than a billion records a day for its customers, which include nine of the country's top ten credit-card issuers and most major retail banks, insurers and automakers. By integrating Acxiom's consumer data with Oracle's comprehensive MDM solutions, Oracle plans to provide customers with a pre-packaged, content-enriched customer information repository with unprecedented levels of data quality. This hybrid approach to customer data management will help clients conduct better, faster and easier MDM projects and perform more targeted marketing campaigns to cross-sell and up-sell into existing customer accounts.
Oracle's MDM solutions serve as a customer data hub to unify customer data across multiple business units and functionally disparate systems. Oracle's comprehensive functionality manages customer data over the entire lifecycle: from capturing customer data, to cleansing addresses and spelling, identifying potential duplicates, consolidating duplicates, enhancing customer profiles with external data and distributing the authoritative customer profile to the operational systems.

Hello Experts,
I am new to MDM, and want to know what is difference between SAP MDM and IBM MDM.
Also please provide some good documetation on SAP MDM.
For what it is used, what are the advantages of using it and all.
Thanks,
Sumahi,
SAP MDM:SAP MDM enables master data on customers, partners and products to be consolidated and harmonized across the enterprise, making it available to all staff and business partners. The IBM View
In IBM's view, MDM is a set of disciplines, technologies, and solutions used to create and maintain consistent, complete, contextual, and accurate business data for all stakeholders (users, applications, data warehouses, processes, enterprises, trading partners, and so on). It's a holistic framework for managing structured and unstructured data that's aligned with business processes and managed throughout the information life cycle
To a large extent, SAPs NetWeaver initiatives are concessions to the reality of heterogeneity. No customer is going to have a completely SAP- or Oracle-based environment. With NetWeaver and Fusion, SAP and Oracle propose to accommodate the heterogeneous data-access requirements of their customers while keeping their bread-and-butter application software at the heart of things.
IBMs middleware vision displaces the primacy of the ERP vendors. Its probably too much to say that customers who embrace Big Blues WebSphere data integration middleware can pick and choose from between and among best-of-breed financial, SCM, and MRP (among others) products for their enterprise application needs. If nothing else, however, IBMs data integration and MDM middleware stack does give customers an alternative to SAP .
However one of the problems with IBMs approach to MDM is that, taken in isolation, it would mean that application vendors would need to completely rewrite their applications to take advantage of the MDM layer. This isnt going to happen, not least because vendors like SAP have their own MDM capabilities.
Moreover, users those do not want to convert to IBM's new multiform MDM offering will have to
negotiate separate maintenance agreements to protect their long-term investments in
WPC (which is WebSphere Product Center is a product information management solution for building a consistent central repository.).
Lastly, users should work with IBM to ensure that the standard IBM three-year
maintenance commitment will continue with the current WPC product, independent of
any move to a single MDM platform.

The company has decided to use IBM MDM rather then SAP MDM as there preferred master data management tool. However, we would like to also implement SAP SRM 6.0 in the near future and we're wondering if choosing IBM MDM instead of SAP MDM will cause problems with SRM?
Does anyone know the key touch points between SAP MDM and SAP SRM? Has anyone had SAP SRM and used a MDM tool other then SAP MDM?SAP MDM comes with the catalog with search and alternative features such as spares which you are aware. In fact I understand from SAP that SAP MDM is the preffered catalog solution rather than going from the SRM side - particularly because SRM catalog is not freely available with SAP SRM - While with SAP MDM it is.
IBM MDM does not have a good integration with SAP SRM - infact needs the configuration changes each time the catalog is modified.
With SAP MDM - there is a standard Business Content delivered respository which you can extend while with IBM you will have to implement both WPC and WCC to get this - hence double license cost and double logins
Hope this helps. -
Import and export MDM with the SAP Portal
Hi,
Would you have any clue on how to handle import and export from the SAP portal ?
I need your help because I haven't found any standard iView to perform these functions
The only information i got were some explanations on WebDynpro Java iViews using events to export from the Portal.
Thank you in advanceHi,
MDM iViews are only meant to perform MDM Data Manager operations but on limited basis. EP-MDM scenario has been designed for end users only which should not allow to perform complex data manager operations and they need not install MDM Clients.
Thats why importing and exporting functionalities are not possible in standard MDM iviews.

MDM 5.5 SP6 install and post-install config - SLDREG related question
Hello,
I've just installed MDM 5.5 SP6 on Oracle/Solaris and have the server running with no problems, repositories loaded, etc. I do receive the following error in the MDM Console which I understand to mean the sldreg utitlity cannot be found.
Error: Unable to register server in System Landscape Directory: Call to SLDREG Utility in /usr/sap/sldreg failed, Error = 0x100.
Set proper value for parameter 'SLDReg Utility Path' in server configuration file.
If you are not using SLD, set parameter 'SLD Registration' to false in server configuration file so that the server does not try to register with SLD. This will avoid this error in the future.
My questions are:
1. should there be an ABAP install on the same box which would create the file structure referenced above?
2. or can this parameter be set to look at a different /usr/sap directory?
3. Or can I just drop that utility in that directory ?
In other words, is there a recommendation to install an ABAP instance, thereby creating the referenced file structure on the same server as the MDM/Oracle instance? Or is there a workaround approach for this error.
Thanks in advance for your help

CCM or MDM - What are the advantage and disadvantage
Hi
We are planning to install a catalog but is now in doubt what catalog system we must use. We use SRM5.0 but will upgrade to SRM6.0 if we have to.
Can someone tell me the advantage and disadvantage for CCM and MDM?
I know that some patches will be released in MDM2.0 in December and March and this patches will give the following:
- Approver UI in Portal 7.0 (via iViews)
- Integration of Electronic Forms
- Config of Column With
- Config of Image size
- Support of decimal quantities ?!?!?!
- Configurable products
- Browse categories via images
- Customer exits in Search UI
- Search attributes by range
Do CCM for example support the above (except the UI stuff)??
Usefull hints will be rewarded.Hi
<b>Please see related links -></b>

MDM web services and the MDM BP services
Hi *,
I need to know what is the difference between the standard MDM web services and the MDM BP services. How do I decide which set to use?
- KrisSorry but what are BP services? Do you mean Business package?
If yes the approaches are completely different - you use Web Services when you have to customise the application and build your logic/functionality into the app. CRUD operations are procided by Web Services - you need to form your wrapper application from scratch and develop!
With BP - it involves least development effort bearing in mind that its all standard content and not yet completely customizable. So based on your requirements plan whether to go for Business Package or Web Services or Java API completely... -
MDM catalog Search UI is showing SRM-MDM Service catalog instead of Product
Hi Experts,
We are working on SRM7.0 with MDM. We have one Development environment where MDM is working fine.
We made a copy of Existing MDM repository to new Server and Created new SRM-MDM environment for demo setup.
We have nade SRM instance as a copy of Development and when we try to connect to the MDM after making all changes to the search ui as same as Development we are getting search UI page of catalog as SRM-MDM Service catalog instead of SRM-MDM Product catalog.
I can able to acess the new repository through MDM Data manager it is fine.
The products in repository are not displayed in search ui page as only service view of catalog is shown.
Kindly reply if you have any idea or sugession.
Regards,
B.N.Karthikeyan.Hi,
Login into the SRM -MDM repository ---> Go to General configuration settings --> select tab 'General'
On default 'Service' radio button will be seected change the the radio button to the ''Product' and save. Catalog will work as Product catalog.

Interesting scenario:
IBM and SAP have tied up to compete with Oracle. SAP has integrated their High-Performance Analytic Appliance(HANA) with IBM DB2. Below link says:
"SAP and IBM are in tight co-opetition, with Oracle as their joint mortal enemy,"
"if HANA ever becomes sufficiently compelling, Oracle will have to partner with it."

I've also heard that Oracle and IBM are partner to deliver Solutions and Services together.
This is just from IBM site:

RFC calls with SAP JCO and IBM resource adapter for SAP - basic tuning
Hi experts,
we are working on a java portal connected to a backend system SAP by calling RFCs.
On our first integration tests, it appears to be quite slow fetching data from SAP by calling the remote functions from the custom portal. We are using SAP JCo 3.0.6 and IBM resource adapter for SAP 7.0.0.3 to integrate SAP with our portal.
Is there any basic tuning to achieve to improve performances or any hint of where to tune in SAP ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot,
JamalHi Jamal,
I understand you have already checked performance issues in the SAP Server. We had some problems with certain RFC calls and it turned out to be a badly developed ABAP sentence.
I'd recommend you to use httpwatch or another tool to check the response times from the browser, so you can point accurately where the is.
