SAP PI for EDI

Hi experts,
We would like to use SAP PI for creating EDI Documents, Could you let me know what are the options available other than using Seeburger. We would be mostly using this for sending invoices to external edi systems.I would appreciate your help. Many thanks.

Hi,
>>>Could you let me know what are the options available other than using Seeburger
you can send XML files to your EDI provider if the provider supports it
or even IDOC-XML (there are also providers that support this)
so it all depends on the EDI provider you use

  • Mapping handling in third party vs SAP PI for EDI 850

    Hi Experts,
Can I know Pros and Cons for hanling mapping translations in third party vs handling mapping translations in SAP PI for EDI 850 interface.
We are already paying money to third party. I just need pros and cons.. we will choose best approch based on your valuable points
    Appreciate your help.
    Regards,
    Krishna.

    Hi Mohan,
    Pros:
SAP PI is a middleware and all Middlewares work pretty much on the same principles.
I am assuming that EDI 850 would have some sort of structure, [ to be honest I have not worked on EDI but just read about it] and SAP PI would require you to convert this structure into XML -> the only language SAP PI understands.
Now, I am sure there are lots of third party adapters available in the market for EDI. PI will give you flexibility to convert this interface into any kind of requirement be it JDBC/FILE/IDOC or anything and vice versa is also true. PI give you this enormous ability to convert to and from any format as long as it is viable.
Last but not the least, it will provide a robust system with Alerting and Monitoring.
Cons: You may have to invest on a third party adapter to read the EDI
You can read the following links for more abt EDI and SAP PI:

    Hi,
I have to send the Shipment/Billing Information and the triggering point is When we save the Shipment of the Delivery.. I am using SHPMNT03 IDOC for Shipment Details.. I am thinking of extending the SHPMNT03 IDOC for getting the billing details. Is this the right way for sending the Shipment/Billing Information to EDI 857 ?

  • Settings for edi

    Hi
what r the settings needed in sap system for transferring the idoc to edi subsytem?
is the ale settings require for edi connection?

    1. EDI Subsystem is not the only way to translate EDI message into IDOC, these subsystems are typically very costly. When you are not using heavy duty EDI processing, you can even use ABAP to translate EDI message. This turns out to be more cost effective for low volume.
    2. I don't see any value in uploading this information into a Z-Table. If it is an EDI message, chances are there must be a way to post this information into SAP which can be used for adding value to the process.
    3. You must pay attention to the naming convention of the files, as you will need to make sure that you are not processing the same message again. Also it is a good practice save the files into another directory (archive directory).
    4. You can ask your EDI partner to trigger an event in SAP (You can give them a batch file which runs program sapevt to do that). It helps if you want real time interface, but scheduled job as you are thinking will also do the job.

  • Automatic Output determination for PO for EDI

I have a requirement to generate IDOCs automatically when POs are created/changed (only for certain plants) and send this PO to a certain plant which is set up as a customer ( KU partner type in Partner profile )
I have done the following :
    1) Created a Z output type - Z005
    2) Created Partner profile with message determination for ORDERS with process code Me10 (also added ORDCHG with ME11 later).
    3) Create condition table - 925 with PO output type and Plant as criteria
    4) Maintained and activated requirement routine(here i check if Mat. type is 'RAW' and force sy-subrc = 0) and access sequence.
    5) Maintained message schema and added my condition type (Z005) and requirement routine(911) there.
    6) I have config to submit IDOCs immediately in Partner profile and in NACE.
But somehow, the output type Z005 for EDI (6) is not automatically created when I create a PO that matches my conditions.
I am able to create an Idoc when I manually Key in Z005 in PO header message.Once i save after manually enter the message type, it is auto generating on any further updates.
Am I missing any config to auto generate Z00t type output for EDI  for the first time?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Partner profiles for EDI

What is the "Partner Profiles for Logical Systems" when maintaining partner profiles for EDI.
Which kind of partner profile we use when sending payments like wire and ach through bank. Don't we use partner type B for bank or do we use partner tupe LS (logical systesm)?????

    Hi
LS - Logical system is used for ALE interface , That is interaction with SAP clicnets whether in the Same Server or External servers.
Main usage is in Intercompany billing where the Different copmnay codes are maintained in different clients
Each clicent in SAP has a Logical system Defined to it.

  • SAP XI and EDI

    Hi all,
I have some questions about SAP XI and EDI.
We are planning to get the SAP XI to handle EDI message e.g. ANSI 850, but it looks like XI does not handle EDI out of the box. From what I read we still need to buy an EDI adaptor to handle the EDI-to-IDOC and IDOC-to-EDI processing. e.g. Seeburger adaptor.
Actually I don't quite get this, isn't it XI contains a set of tools that allows us to do the mapping? Can we just use those tools to create EDI map without buying the seeburger adaptor? If we cannot create EDI map ourselves, then isn't it SAP XI is just an expensive message router??
Any inputs are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

XI has its own built-in message mapping tool (drag and drop GUI), upon which you can do "any-to-any" mapping. You can also do your mapping in ABAP, Java, or XSLT environments if you feel that the message (graphical) mapping tool doesnt enable you to do everything you want.
So yes ... you can use XI's mapping functionality to map from iDoc to EDI format. However, this can be quite a complex exercise: you will need to setup the structure of the (target) EDI message/data type, and then carry out the mapping yourself - depending on the type of interface, this could be quite a complex exercise (typically EDI structures contain a very large number of fields).
Once the iDoc has been mapped into the EDI format ... you will need to transmit (send) the EDI message to your (business) partner system, who is typically outside of your firewall (B2B). This means you need to communicate with them using a secure communication protocol (typically OFTP via VAN in EDI scenarios). And this is where the SeeBurger EDI adapters add value. They enable you to connect to VANs (Value Added Networks) using OFTP (or x.400), and also provide mappings for some EDI scenarios (which you can use).
iWay also provide adapters for this purpose.

  • Creating outbound IDOC for EDI

    HI All,
I have to create an IDOC for EDI. Can anyone tell be the function module to create an IDOC for EDI. I know MASTER_IDOC_DESTRIBUTE, but it is only used for ALE.
Can anyone help me in this.
    Thanks.
    Shweta

    Dudes:
It sounds to me like all of you guys need some training and some understanding of the basics.
MASTER_IDOC_DESTRIBUTE is called by the standard IDoc interface after an IDoc has been built and is ready to be kicked out the door. It provides all the services needed to write the idoc to the database and send it out through the partner profile and file or tRFC port. It's used both for ALE and EDI IDocs.
I cover the processing flow extensively in my new book from SAP Press "Architecting EDI with SAP IDocs". The book is available from:

  • BADI for EDI Invoice outbound

    Dear experts,
in my special scenario I would like that in the EDI outbound invoice Batch qty. is not showing for segment E1EDP19 which is showing only the Batch nr. I wanted to use a BADI for EDI outbound invoice which uses the logic for transfering Batch qts. in the IDOC?
    Thanks and advice.

    Hi Ram,
thanks. Do we have a sepeicifc BADI also??
When IDOC is passed to the externnal system one uses BAPIs, what about before the IDOC is passed, I want the IDOC
content(BATCH QTY.), in the SAP itself, to have the Batch qty. passed in the IDOC.
The standard SAP shows only Batch nr. and not the BAtch qty.
    Thanks and advice.

EDI is nothing but Electronic data interchange. SAP will support EDI through Intermediate documents (IDOCS).
EDI (Electronic Document interchange) - EDI is the electronic exchange of business documents between the computer systems of business partners, using a standard format over a communication network.
EDI is also called paperless exchange.
    Advantages:
    Reduced Data entry errors
    Reduced processing time
Availabilty of data in electonic form
    Reduced paperwork
    Reduced Cost
    Reduced inventories and better planning
    Standard means of communications
    Better business process
    EDI has two process
    1. Outbound process
    2. Inbound process
    OP:
    1.Application document is created.
    2.IDOC is generated
3.IDoc is transferred from SAP to Operating system layer
4.Idoc is converted into EDI standards
5.Edi document is transmitted to the business partner
6.The Edi Subsystem report status to SAP
    IP:
    1.EDI transmission received
2.EDI document is converted into an IDOC
3.IDOC is transferred to the SAP layer
    4.The application document is created
5.The application document can be viewed.
    EDI FLOW :
Here is some thing which helps you and here the purchase order is taken as example too..
Electronic Data Interchange, or EDI, is the electronic exchange of business data. Using a standard format, EDI provides a method of transmitting business data from one computer to another, without the need to re-key data. This electronic link can result in more effective business transactions. With EDI, paper documents such as invoices can be replaced with electronic transmissions, thus time is saved, and the potential for error is minimized. Data can be exchanged at any time. Related business expenses, such as postage, printing, phone calls, and handling, can also be significantly reduced. EDI can aid in the support of manufacturing efforts, such as Just-in-Time and Third Party Warehousing, and financial efforts, such as Electronic Payments.
What parts of the business cycle can be supported by EDI?
Any business documents that are currently exchanged using paper can be converted to an EDI. Standards. Standards include ANSI X12 and XML/EDI are primarily used in the United States, while EDIFACT is used in Europe and Asia.
    How does EDI get started?
EDI gets started when one company contacts another expressing interest in trading business documents electronically using Electronic Data Interchange. The two companies must first determine each other's EDI capabilities. If you do not already know your EDI capabilities, we have prepared a questionnaire to help you determine them. If you are already EDI capable, we will coordinate with your technical staff to determine a testing plan. Upon completion of testing the EDI documents, the appropriate business personnel will set a production start date to begin the exchange of EDI business data. If you are not EDI capable, we recommend you first obtain a commitment from your upper management. Your company will need to allocate resources and capital for software, hardware, testing, possible programming, and training.
What is the flow of EDI?
The flow of EDI depends on the sophistication of your systems and your EDI software. If you have internal purchasing/order entry systems, you will need interface programs that can extract and insert data out of and into these systems. EDI programs that interface with your internal systems are preferred over software that requires re-keying of data. Embassy Software specializes in seemless interface between EDI and your back office systems. Using a purchase order as an example of a business document your customer would send that PO electronically (850) to you. It could be sent either through a VAN (Value Added Network) or through an FTP server. You would take that 850 and convert it either into and ODBC database, a flat file or XML document to be imported into your Order System with the use of EDI Software such as PassportXchange.. Using EDI communication software, which is part of the PassportXchange package you would pull down data at set intervals from the VAN or FTP. These documents are then processed through EDI translation software and output to our order entry system. Finally, an EDI document called a functional acknowledgment (997) is sent to your customer.

  • Books in market for EDI

    Hello Gurus,
would you please update me the links or books in market for EDI...?
    Mandar

    Hi,
EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) is generally used for conducting business transactions between the company and its trading partners. Examples include sending a purchase order to a vendor which then automatically creates a sales order on their side. Generally this functionality is focussed on purchasing and sales functions (sometimes also inventory and forecasting data).
