SAP R/3 4.7 EE on Solaris 10

Hi All,
I need your valuable suggestion/solution with respect to the query i have. To be informed, as a requirement in SAP Upgrade project following are some queries we have -->
1. We need to install SAP R/3 4.7 ext 2.00 EE on Solaris 10 with oracle 9i, we are currently on SAP R/3 4.7 ext 2.00 EE on Solaris 9 with oracle 9i. Is there is any difference in behavior of SAP due to OS versions ??
2. After performing Step 1, we need to restore the backup of existing data to new version of OS, will it give any problem while performing restoration ??
Please suggest appropriate solution ASAP.
Many Thanks,
Kshitiz Goyal,
BASIS Administrator

If you are installing a new system then I would go for Oracle 10 instead of 9.2 - the official support for 9.2 will end tomorrow (end of July)!
Solaris 10 doesn´t use /etc/system for IPC configurations any more, you have to create a project and assign the users - see note 724713 - parameter settings for Solaris 10
Apart from that everything should be the same.

  • SAP Oracle database 11.2 migrating from Solaris  to RedHat Linux (x86_64)

What is SAP guidance on database migration ? What is the best approach ?
I heard person who does migration has to be certified by SAP.

    Jun He wrote:
Thank you for prompt response. When you say "heterogenous system copy" does not support it, do you mean SAP does not support the converted system or just the process itself ?

    Hi Jun,
I didn't said that SAP will not support your system, after the migration by Oracle data pump. I noted that OS/DB migration is performed by heterogenous system copy with the migration key.
Under this circumstance, if they accept to support you during the migration process with data pump, there's no problem. As I noted that previously, technically it is possible to migrate the system by using data pump, but I didn't requested that kind of support to SAP. I've been surprized to hear that they will support migration with Oracle data pump method. This is my own assestment.
Will they support you, if you face with a problem during the migration with data pump? Or some other problems you may be face after you go to productive, because of this migration?
    >> When you say "heterogenous system copy" does not support it, do you mean SAP does not support the converted system or just the process itself ?
I mean that SAP does not support just process itself and the problem you face because of this migration.

  • Best Unix skills to have AIX, Solaris or Linux Red Hat for SAP

Hello, I was wondering what would be the best Unix certification I should get in order to be
more marketable as a SAP Netweaver Administrator. IBM AIX, Sun Solaris or Linux Redhat.
Thanks for any comments and feedback
    Steve.

Thanks for the reply back. Its a hard question to get some answers for. If you had to make a guess from your own experience or work site what Unix version would it be. Thanks.
You forgot one big vendor: HP - with their HP-UX
I´d say "if you know one you can learn all".
Unix platforms are somewhat standardized (POSIX, SYSV etc.) so if you "know" one, it´s not that much work to learn a second one since the basics are similar, however, each OS has its specialities.
I have seen a chart with OS distributions some time ago, roughly 50 % was Windows, the rest was shared among the other Unix platforms almost equally with a small part being more "exotic" (System i, z/OS).
I´d also say that this is industry dependent. The banking sector may have - historically - more IBM (and hence AIX), manufacturing industry may also historically have more HP-UX, Universities may have more Solaris environments due to the historical closeness of Sun to education sector (note: those are assumptions). Linux may be used from all of them as "Unix"-similar alternative on Intel/AMD platforms.

  • SAP GoLive : File System Response Times and Online Redologs design

    Hello,
A SAP Going Live Verification session has just been performed on our SAP Production environnement.
    SAP ECC6
    Oracle 10.2.0.2
    Solaris 10
As usual, we received database configuration instructions, but I'm a little bit skeptical about two of them :
    1/
We have been told that our file system read response times "do not meet the standard requirements"
The following datafile has ben considered having a too high average read time per block.
File name -Blocks read  -  Avg. read time (ms)  -Total read time per datafile (ms)
    /oracle/PMA/sapdata5/sr3700_10/sr3700.data10          67534                         23                               1553282
I'm surprised that an average read time of 23ms is considered a high value. What are exactly those "standard requirements" ?
    2/
We have been asked  to increase the size of the online redo logs which are already quite large (54Mb).
Actually we have BW loading that generates "Chekpoint not comlete" message every night.
I've read in sap note 79341 that :
"The disadvantage of big redo log files is the lower checkpoint frequency and the longer time Oracle needs for an instance recovery."
Frankly, I have problems undertanding this sentence.
Frequent checkpoints means more redo log file switches, means more archive redo log files generated. right ?
But how is it that frequent chekpoints should decrease the time necessary for recovery ?
    Thank you.
Any useful help would be appreciated.

    Hello
    >> I'm surprised that an average read time of 23ms is considered a high value. What are exactly those "standard requirements" ?
The recommended ("standard") values are published at the end of sapnote #322896.
23 ms seems really a little bit high to me - for example we have round about 4 to 6 ms on our productive system (with SAN storage).
    >> Frequent checkpoints means more redo log file switches, means more archive redo log files generated. right?
    Correct.
    >> But how is it that frequent chekpoints should decrease the time necessary for recovery ?
A checkpoint is occured on every logswitch (of the online redologfiles). On a checkpoint event the following 3 things are happening in an oracle database:
Every dirty block in the buffer cache is written down to the datafiles
The latest SCN is written (updated) into the datafile header
The latest SCN is also written to the controlfiles
If your redologfiles are larger ... checkpoints are not happening so often and in this case the dirty buffers are not written down to the datafiles (in the case of no free space in the buffer cache is needed). So if your instance crashes you need to apply more redologs to the datafiles to be in a consistent state (roll forward). If you have smaller redologfiles more log switches are occured and so the SCNs in the data file headers (and the corresponding data) are closer to the newest SCN -> ergo the recovery is faster.
But this concept does not really fit the reality because of oracle implements some algorithm to reduce the workload for the DBWR in the case of a checkpoint.
There are also several parameters (depends on the oracle version) which control that a required recovery time is kept. (for example FAST_START_MTTR_TARGET)
    Regards
    Stefan

  • ERP 2005 application server on Solaris 10 T2000 ABAP & Java stacks

We are interested to know if there are any companies running Sun T2000 servers, Solaris 10, in the application layer for both ABAP & Java stacks.  If so, how are they performing?
    Regards,
    Cheryl Siebert.

We just had several technical discussions with SAP regarding their new server technology and Solaris 10 capabilities.  They told us that the T2000 works well for web application servers (e.g., Enterprise Portal).  They are optimized for Java.  They don't do well as R/3 application servers.  They recommended using V240s or v40z's as R/3 app servers (you could also explore using X86 servers running either Linux or Solaris).  We are also exploring the potential of using the M5000 as a DB server to reduce the cost of our Oracle licenses (we are not using the runtime Oracle licenses from Sun - don't ask).

  • Unused service in Solaris 10 and default user in Oracle 10

    Hi,
Our SAP system (ERP6 EHP4) were installed on Solaris 10 and Oracle 10
               Questions are:
               - Which ports of /etc/services on Solaris 10 can disable without affect with SAP?
               - Which default users in Oracle 10 can lock or disable (or change password)?
Ps. For Auditing purpose and security hardening in SAP ERP6 EHP4.
    Best regards,
    Choosak B.

    HI,
For port information use this guide
    http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/4e515a43-0e01-0010-2da1-9bcc452c280b?quicklink=index&overridelayout=true
Regarding change in password of oracle users you can change all passwords using BRTOOLS.
Any how SAP only use OS level authntication and SAP<SID> user .
But still you should not lock any user but change in password is supported for all users.(Use brtools to perform same)

  • How to configure backup parallel in SAP with oracle database?

    Dear SAP,
We need your suggestion on oracle database backup parallel using brbackup, our SAP system run on:
OS: UNIX - SUN Solaris SPARC 10
    SAP: ECC 6.0 SR3
    Database: Oracle 10.2.0.4
Our production database are growing rapidly, estimate growing is 2GB/days. Right now we backup our Production using one tape that estimated time to online backup is 4-5hours.
In there future, if we stayed this configuration. It will take long time to backup and restore it's not applicable. That's why we are planning to add more tapes during backup (4 tape parallel).
I read from help.sap, that we can configure this on $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<SID>.sap. in parameter:
    compress = harware
    backup_dev_type = tape
    tape_address = (tape1, tape2, tape3, tape4)
    tape_address_rew = (tape1, tape2, tape3, tape4)
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/88/a2a041a5d4af4db168992639d65d3b/frameset.htm
    My question,
If we want to backup parallel using 4 tapes, is this configuration that we need to do (init<SID>.sap) from sap side (DB13)?
    Thanks and Best Regards,
    Widi

    Dear Mark,
Thanks for your help. actually I have one more question:
How do I restore my backup form this 4 tapes, if I'm using parallel backup?
Will the command same like I restore form 1 tape:
    example:
    brrestore u2013b beczqlnk.ant u2013m full
    brrestore u2013a 5371-5372=/oracle/<SID>/oraarch/
Below are the paramter that I will configure:
    - tape_address = /dev/rmt/0cbn
    - compress = hardware
    - backup_dev_type = tape
    - exec_parallel = 4
    - tape_size = 1600000
    - tape_address = (dev/rmt/0mn, /dev/rmt/1mn, ..)
    - tape_address_rew = (dev/rmt/0m, /dev/rmt/1m, ..)
Appreciate you help and suggestion on this.
    Dear Venkat,
    thanks for your suggestion

  • Integration of SAP ECC 6.0 with SAP Environmental Compliance 3.0

    Hi Friends,
We have SAP ECC 6.0 running on Sun Solaris with Oracle as the DB. Now we are in the process of installing SAP Environmental Compliance Version 3.0  which is running in Windows 2008 Server and with SQL Server 2008 as its database.
I'm looking for an answer on how to integrate the SAP ECC 6.0 to SAP EC(Environmental Compliance) system.
Kindly provide your valuable inputs.Looking forward to hear from you soon.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Vimal

    Hello Vimal
regarding this software a number of publications are available:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_ec30/EC300_FuncDocu_EN.pdf
Here you will find the list of rerequisites etc. and  the integration e.g. into SAP EHS Management is explained.
In any case. The SAP marketplace is the right place to take a look regarding  prerequisites and how to integrate this software with SAP core (SAP ECC 6.0) or with SAP EHS Management software.
As SAP EHS Management is technically part of ECC 6.0 the link to SAP Enviromental Compliance should be possible.
    With best regards

  • SAP Retail Store - Enter store number again -

    Hello all,
We are implementing mySAP 2005 ECC6.0, as part of the implementation SAP Consultants recommended us to implement IDES (Solaris/Oracle) as our first "Picture of the new SAP". We are planning to use SAP Retail Store, in the IDES we just activated all the components in tx SICF and created the external alias (#918018, 762872, 763210), since we are using the integrated ITS, but every time we call the alias or “wosm” from the web, we get the same msg, "Enter store number again" and nothing comes from there, any clue? Advise?..
    Thanks in advance,

  • Moving an Oracle Database from Solaris to AIX

    Hi all,
I have been asked to move an SAP system using an Oracle database from
Solaris to AIX (on an IBM P590).
Most of the move is straightforward, except the Oracle database
transfer. It would make my life so much easier if I could simply
restore the Oracle datafiles from an off-line backup of the Solaris
system and then link it to a clean install of the Oracle binaries on
the AIX system, rather than have to do an export and import.
Is this possible, after all the AIX Oracle binaries would be the same
patch level as the Solaris binaries and the file systems would be the
same. Also as it would be an offline backup we would not have to do
any recovery, so the archive logs and the original redo logs would not
    be required.
Does anyone know if this is possible or has actually executed it
successfully, any hints and tips on the gotchas would be greatly
    appreciated.
    TIA
    Chris aka BoobBoo

    Hello Chris,
unfortunately you didn't write anything about your oracle version or your backup mechanism like RMAN,etc..
I think you will use Solaris on a SPARC architecture and not on x86? (same endian)
If you have RMAN and 10gR2 then you can use the "Database Transport Across Same Endian Platforms":
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14191/wnbradv.htm
    > RMAN now supports the CONVERT DATABASE command, which can prepare a whole database for transport to a new platform that uses the same endian format. Database transport across platforms provides a faster and easier way to move databases from one platform to another than previous solutions requiring the use of Data Pump.
Metalinknote #413586.1 has a FAQ and a step on step guide.
If you have created your tablespaces under Oracle 10g (no oracle upgrade from previous releases!!) you can use the "Transportable tablespace feature" and copy the database files. SAP has published note #1035051 for that.

    Stefan
