Sapinst under RAC 11.2 using ACFS and ASM

Hi all,
we are actually doing some installationtests (BankingService-Netweaver 7.02) ) on a 2Node-RAC-Cluster with the actual sapinst based on OEL 5.5, Oragrid 11.2.0.2 and OracleBin 11.2.0.2.
We doing a HA-Installation and we put all "DB-related" files in ASM.
We put all failovercritical Filesystems on ACFS.
We are no ASM-mirroring (but SAN-based)
Of course we know that this combination is not (yet) SAP-certified - but it works fine.
We are using different Oracle-Users" as grid-ower (oragrid) and "DB-owner" (standard: ora<sid>).
We faced some privilege-problems regarding the cluster-ressources for ora<sid> -> apart from that the installations run without any issues.
As sapinst asked for the sapdata-directories, we answered with the ASM-structure.
So sapinst creates the +ASM-dierectories (if he what to...) and puts the coresponding create_sql-commands towards the DB, which where corectly interpreted against ASM.
So here some questions:
does anybody know, when there will be a sapinst with complete ASM-support?
should we use just one oracle-user?
is there a naming-standard for the RAC-instances?
are there brtools availbale with complete ASM-support?

•Oracle ACFS is the preferred file manager for non-database files. It is optimized for general purpose files.
•Oracle ACFS does not support any file that can be directly stored in Oracle ASM.

Oracle has thrown in all sorts of nonsensical verbiage to completely confuse everyone as to how you can us e ACFS. You can use it for "database-related" stuff but you can't use it for data files, archivelog files, backup files. You can store exports because if you do a parallel expdp the export file(s) must be visible to the entire cluster. Which **I think** is to be interpreted that you cannot store "application" files that are required to be accessible by your applications. I surmise that the reason for this is that Oracle decided they could make more $$$ by releasing a "product" called CloudFS. CloudFS **is** ASM/ACFS - and nothing more. So, on your Weblogic clustered middle-tier you can use Cloudfs to store your application data files.
Example for mid-tier:
some process transfers 100's of files to be processed
The middle-tier - running on multiple servers (nodes)
take the files and process them in parallel (mechanisms in place to ensure only one node processes a given file )
writes output files to another shared directory.
In the past, you would provide a "share" by using NFS. Well, as it turns out - really bad things can happen when when one of the nodes processing and not receiving the files dies, you can have files get "lost" if that NFS share dies.
ACFS works great for this - and Oracle realized that since "ASM/GI" was sort-f "free" they needed to close that loophole. In RAC, the only thing that "cost extra" was the RAC license which only applied to the RDBMS code that made the database cluster-aware. <this from a conversation from an ex-Oracle Salesman>.

Need WDM Record w/1212m under Vista64, can I use VAC and/or ASIO4ALL to do this?

I need to route the audio from the 1212m into an app that need input via WDM. Unfortunately, I'm running under Vista so WDM Recoding doesn't work. Is there a way to patch together Virtual Audio Cables and/or ASIO4ALL to work around this?

What do you mean by "route audio from 1212M"? Do you have the 1212M in your Vista machine?
AFAIK, 1212M do have PatchMix software which is quite good for all kind of routings.
You didn't mention any software there so are there any alternatives other than the one you're using? Why the software needs just WDM ... isn't it compatible with mme/directsound/asio (IIRC, Vista supports some of these old driver models)?
If the latency is not an issue then VAC should work for this application if VAC is Vista compatible and your software sees it.

11i EBS cloning using 10gRAC and ASM

Hi Everyone,
I have 2 node RAC cluster using ASM running 11i EBS on Linux Platform. Need to clone the environment. Have reviewed the current cloning doc Note:230672.1. Even in advance configs it doesn't talk about cloning DB tier when you have ASM in the pic. Has anyone tackled this before? IF so appreciate any leads.

Unfortunately you hide your database version,that's not so good,because sometimes changes happen. Documentation has examples,how to duplicate from ASM to ASM, this is for 10gR2:

11gR1 has even enhancements, which don't require to set parameters in the auxiliary database init file.

ACFS and ASM

I want to ensure by db_recovery destination_size value whenever i create ACFS filesystem.
Example:
I created ACFS file system of 10 GB from the Flash diskgroup (PTMCM_FRA) of size 17GB. I would like to know what would be size of db_recovery_destination_size?

i am not exactly sure if i undertand your question, but i think you want to know your free space in the diskgroup for the FRA after you create a ACFS Volume. Maybe this query help you.

10g RAC - should I use RAW, OCFS and/or ASM ?

I am about to install 10G RAC on RHAS3. Options for sharing disk partitions are raw, OCFS and ASM. The OCR and voting files must be raw or OCFS, I would tend to go for OCFS in this case. For the Oracle datafiles, again, I would tend to go for OCFS simply for ease of management since ASM seems to add another layer of complexity, and raw lacks flexibility. OCFS however is also new technology and may still have some stability issues. I'm not yet sure of our disk configuration, but there will be HBA cards in each machine with one or two SAN partitions, so I don't expect some of the ASM features such as mirroring etc. will be required as this will be done in the hardware. Does anyone have any recommendations or experiences(good or bad) in which way to go ?

We're using raw partitions for some years now, (since oracle 8i, then 9i and now 10g). It is quite flexible, but you shouldn't use physical partitions but LVM. It's very stable.
Now on 10g we're using ASM on some sites where mirroring is needed. It works, but not so stable as raw. we discover some bugs as well.
We've never used OCFS. I don't like it. To much limits. I belive that special utilities are needed for managing files. I don't like linux system software produced by oracle.

If possible you need to upgrade OS X. However, what you can upgrade to is dependent on what your Mac hardware and configuration is which you have not provided in your profile.

iChat will Video chat to another iChat in a Jabber Buddy List (Google run a Jabber server for GoogleTalk)
However it will not Video to the Web Page login to iGoogle or the Web Mail Page login. (where people can Google Chat as it were in a Web Browser).
Nor does it video to the Google Talk Stand alone app for PCs or any other Jabber apps on any platform.
iChat uses a connection Process called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) which is also used by other VoIP devices.
Jabber/XMPP invited the Jingle Protocol for Jabber Applications.
Google have included this in their Standalone app and the Plug-in for Web Browsers on both PCs and Mac (you can get this as a Standalone Plug-in or as part of Chrome)
More on this here This article has been changed several time in the recent months. It now claims a greater involvement by Google in writing the Jingle Library (Although now Google's version does not work with the others)
This tends to mean that using the web Login to Google to Chat also cannot video chat to other Jabber apps that are using Jingle.
If your Buddy is using iChat then check the Video Menu has two items to Enable Camera/Video chat and Microphone/Audio chats are ticked.
In the View Menu the Show Status Items should be ticked (Selecting them toggles the tick and the function On or Off)
It could be Internet speed but at this stage I would doubt this at this stage.

Yes there are quite a few similar reports at the moment, I haven't experienced the problem, yet others in the UK have, so we're not quite sure what criteria determines whether you are affected by this. I haven't seen any solutions so far, so it may just be a case of waiting to see if it's repaired or whether the rest of us are going to see the same thing.

Under Snow Leopard I used a WD My World NAS to back up my Mac Pro (Mid 2010). When I upgraded to Lion I am unable to access the backup because the NAS does not yet support AFP. I have now bought a Time Capsule and want to transfer the old backup onto it.

Keep the old OS around and just kick the tires and test new OS. Apple has a history and habit of breaking support in things like this.
You can use TimeMachine as one level of backup, and even there there were changes with Lion, I would always recommend foremost backup clones of every volume. And clone (SuperDuper etc) can be stored on something like HP NAS Media Server which also was supporting TimeMachine, iTunes - until Apple made that harder and more their own proprietary format.

Rather than "upgrade" I would clone the system, and do a clean install, then allow Setup Assistant to import your files.

Reinstall DB and ASM using existing RAW devices in RAC

Hi,
We have two Database servers in Cluster environment DB1 and DB2 using CX300(SAN) as Storage device.Recently we had upgraded the OS kernel on DB1 from RHEL 3 to RHEL 4 and DB2 is still running on RHEL 3. Due to some application problems we wanted the DB1 to be rollbacked to RHEL 3
DB1-has ASM1 instance and DB2 has ASM2 instance running.Similary SID1 and SID2 on both of them.
Since we want to roll back to RHEL 3 it is a clean install on DB1. So my problem is I had never done this kind of reinstallation of DB and ASM using existing raw devices.
Can Someone sent me out some instructions and steps on how to do the reinstall without disturbing RAC,DB2 and Data on RAW/CX300(SAN) device.
I am basically a system admin not a complete Oracle DBA.I will be grateful for your help.

It means, before proceeding a proper database backup must be taken, then it has to be started from scratch. RHEL3 is certified with 10gR1 and 10gR2, you should be aware of the patchsets available for the oracle version.
