SAPPHIRE / ASUG (Orlando) questions / tips

Would anyone share their tips and tricks for the SAPPHIRE / ASUG conference attendees? Based on my TechEd and Florida experience, I'll start:
- Wear comfortable shoes (this is the most important one!)
- Plan your agenda ahead of time and make sure to have a "plan B" for the sessions. But leave some time for exploration too.
- Your colleagues will love it if you bring some free stuff back.
- I never travel to FL without a jacket. There is always some room with AC set to freezing temperatures.
Some specific questions:
- What is the difference between 'Lecture Presentation' and 'Theater Presentation'? Also how are 'Demo Station' and 'Demo Theater' different?
- Is there a map / layout available somewhere? I'm trying to figure out how far the rooms are from each other (at TechEd it was sometimes a good 10 min. walk from one side to another).
- It looks like there are two (or more) buildings - the one labeled Convention Center on Google maps is north of International Dr. And the other one (in the SW corner) is Civic Center. Is the event only in the Convention Center building or is it more spread out?
- How is wifi at the event (it was pretty bad at TechEd in 2013)?
- On Thursday is there some baggage service to store the bags or send them to the airport?
Thank you!

Jelena - yes, it's super-cold inside the Convention Center.  I haven't found a map yet but I am sure one will be posted soon.
On this:
Q: What is the difference between 'Lecture Presentation' and 'Theater Presentation'? Also how are 'Demo Station' and 'Demo Theater' different?
A: Lecture presentations are like at TechEd when you listen to a lecturer present slides - usually this is NOT on the show floor - they are on the 2nd and 3rd floors.
Theater presentations and Demo stations are on the show floor.
Q: - Is there a map / layout available somewhere? I'm trying to figure out how far the rooms are from each other (at TechEd it was sometimes a good 10 min. walk from one side to another).
A: Not yet; rooms are not too far from each other if you are doing the lecture sessions.  The show floor is big.
You can see Welcome to the Orange County Convention Center</title><link rel="stylesheet" href="nivo-slider.c… - education rooms are on South Side - e.g. S330x
Typically education /lecture sessions are on levels II and III - lower level is the show floor.
Q: - It looks like there are two (or more) buildings - the one labeled Convention Center on Google maps is north of International Dr. And the other one (in the SW corner) is Civic Center. Is the event only in the Convention Center building or is it more spread out?
A: If you stick with the lecture / show floor it is all on the South Side of the convention center (to my knowledge) unless you have meetings in the Hilton which is on the walkway.  Sometimes executive meetings are on the North side of the convention center and yes, that is a hike.
Q: How is wifi at the event (it was pretty bad at TechEd in 2013)?
A: Typical conference wifi; my experience is wifi in the lecture sessions is better than during the keynotes or on the show floor
Q: On Thursday is there some baggage service to store the bags or send them to the airport
A: Usually yes - but my choice is to drop my bag off at the Rosen Centre (across the street) and have them send my bag to the airport for $10 - they will check in the bag for you if you drop it off 4 hours before the flight.  Much more convenient and you just need to pick up your bag at baggage claim when you leave.

    Steve,
The forum is full of threads on Certification (Just do a search on those key words and you will get myriads of results).
I was wondering however what is the value of a BW 3.0 certification.
BW 3.0 is an outdated version, and i am skeptical about its value in the labour market.
I would opt for either a BW 3 .5 or a NW2004S (if you have experience on this version) certification.
Hope it helps (points are welcome),

  • Questions / tips on iphone

Hi, I have a question... how to turn off the key tune on the phone's dial pad? I tried to turn the keyboard click off in the setting->sound, but the key tune is still there. It's annoying to me. any idea where I can turn it off.
Also, with the software upgrade, I still have the slow keyboard issue from time to time. I find if I hold the home key for 5+ seconds it will bring the app down completely then i open the app again everything will be fine. -- just sharing my experience.

I guess 2.0 has some memory issue to cause the sluggish response. Hope they will come up some fixes soon.
This morning i tried to open my AP news app and it crashed before it was launched. I tried 3 times and got the same problem. Finally I powered off and on the iphone then it worked. so reboot is another thing worth trying.
Too bad the dial tune cannot be turned off, unless I use the earphone... Did apple just miss this common feature??

  • Official thinkpad x61 thread. Questions & tips'n'tricks! (i686)

    Get X running:
    pacman -S xorg xf86-video-intel hwd
hwd -xa (will autoconfig a xorg.conf)
    Editing the autoconfigured xorg.
nano /.../X11/xorg.conf (forgot what folder xorg.conf is placed in)
In xorg.conf you can change the keyboard layout to "thinkpad60" and scroll to the bottom and change the color depth to 24bit.
And now you should be able to start X.
Getting the wireless wifi to work.
pacman -S iwlwifi-4965-ucode (the popper wifi drivers)
Changing the sensitivity and speed of the trackpoint
    echo -n 250 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/sensitivity
    echo -n 160 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/speed
Put this in your rc.local . 250&160 are the numbers that decides what sensitivity and speed the trackpoint will have. And you can of course change them after your demands.

zorg wrote:Hi, is there an arch-newbie friendly account of how to install arch on a X61, somewhere ?
I'd like to try Arch but I wonder if that might not be a bit too much for me to chew and whether I should go with something more beginner friendly like Ubuntu ?
    Hi zorg -
This is my first post on the Arch forums. I am a seasoned windows systems engineer with passable *nix skills. I recently (not sure what came over me) decided to give Linux a shot and started out with Ubuntu. It was ok but as a command line guy and someone who likes to do stuff manually and automate his environment, I didn't appreciate all the "autoconfig" and wizards in Ubuntu. I am also a rogue individual by nature and try to blaze my own trail so I wanted to use something different. Next distro I tried was Mepis, which is excellent for beginners and I actually liked it but had a lot of issues with hardware compatibility. I only had it running about a week but I can say that it is an excellent inroad into Linux and very easy to setup.
Now on to Arch What drew me (and countless others) to this distro was a few simple principles:
    1. By and large, the EXTREMELY detailed and well organized documentation. I have learned so much not just about Arch but about Linux in general by reading these Wiki's, many of them several times over.
    2. Choice. You get to choose what you want. Arch is a bare-bones install and comes with limited software/addons. It also comes with no gui bu default. Everything that goes on the system is a choice you get to make personally. This might be viewed as a downside by some but for me it is a huge plus. It may seem complicated and scary to a newbie but it is my opinion that, coupled with the excellent documentation, it is actually very newbie friendly (assuming you are willing to tinker a bit and download/edit some files). Arch Linux developers and users believe that trying to hide the complexities of a system actually results in an even more complex system, and is therefore to be avoided.
    3. Everything just works. Hardware was detected easily, wireless worked relatively easily, dual monitors, etc.
    4. Stability. Arch is one of the more stable distros and is well supported. It is also a "rolling release" distribution which means you can update as often or not as you please.
    5. Arch is smoking fast! (boots up in less than 30 seconds).
I have been running Arch on my office desktop for two weeks now and I am loving it. Compiz is quite nice as well and puts MS Aero to shame. I even installed it on an old T43 Thinkpad lying around at home. I run it as a server with no DE (uses just 40MB RAM!)
I'll try to post more later but I do recommend you at least give Arch a try and let everyone know how it goes.

  • Beach Ball of Death, Dark Gray Screen after Clean OS ReInstall- Please Help

My 13" MBP is less than two months old.
I read online somewhere that a company that buys large quantities of Macs has a strategy for combating the industry standard 5% hard drive failure in new notebooks. It said something along the lines of performing a clean install / reformat of OS X was a good idea to see if any problems arise- then the HD would likely have problems in the near future, etc...
Being the nerd that I am I performed a clean install on my MBP. I had just performed one the day before on my other Mac (which worked perfectly).
First of all, my MBP took roughly 15 minutes to boot from the disk (to begin the reinstall). Actually one time I gave it over 20 minutes and it never did load. Once I finally got to the Language select screen it froze, clicking the continue arrow did nothing and I couldn't even choose another language. So I shut down and tried again. The DVD doesn't look scratched. Is my drive less than stellar?
This time, it worked, albeit, it took much longer to install than my lesser powered Mac Mini. OS X notified me that the installation was successful and that it now simply needed to restart. Upon restart I was greeted with a dark gray screen and mouse cursor spinning beach ball (that responded to trackpad).
Shut down, turned it back on- same thing. Tried a bunch more times, no luck.
Called Apple Care and after a few questions / tips we concluded that it needed to be sent in, the associate imagined it was a HD problem.
I took my MBP to a local authorized service provider and they took it, and called me back in a few hours. I asked what they did to fix it, and they skillfully dodged the question. They said it should be good now, that it passed all hardware tests, but to let them know if it happened again.
Since then it's been running okay. As a nerd it's a bit bothersome to know that I can't perform a clean install when I see fit- and that if I did, I'd have to take it into Apple Care again in the future, and once Apple Care runs out than a clean install just isn't an option.
It boots up just as fast, but when it gets passed the white screen with the Apple logo... when the desktop is loading I noticed that it stays at the flash of the solid blue desktop a bit longer than usual (the second before it loads your desktop bg image). It also seems that fully loading all of the top right menu bar items takes a bit longer than before.
Also, not sure if the hard drive's sudden motion sensor is going haywire. But randomly, the hard drive will make a singular faint "thud / click" noise. Very faint. But it's not your usual "reading data from the HD" hard drive thrashing noise you hear when you open an app / file. It's a single, more sudden noise, but like I said it is fairly quiet- I hear it when I have literally nothing running except this Safari window. This is something I didn't notice the first few weeks with the MBP.
Also in system profiler, the battery's condition was never good, but only "Normal." I did calibrate my battery one of the first days I had it.
    Here's some coconutBattery info:
    Current Battery Capacity: 5588 mAh
    Original Battery Capacity: 5770 mAh
    Which is 96%.
    Load cycles: 10
Anyways, curious if anyone has any ideas about my inability to perform a clean install and successfully boot up? I don't see any reason why it should have taken THAT long to boot from the disk, frozen in several random spots throughout, and then not be able to boot up.
The HD noises aren't a huge deal just a bit concerning, and admittedly the battery info is just nerdy paranoia. Just curious what's going on with my MBP. Is there anything I can do, or should read?

    Hi simplecoder13,
I perform a similar process on all the HDs that I buy, only I take it a step further. I'll run a single pass erase on drives under 500GB and a seven pass erase on drives larger than 500GB and ones that are deemed "mission critical." Here's an interest metric, though.
Since 01/01/10 on laptop drives (Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi)
    +HDs purchases - 461+
    +Drives > 500GB - 119+
    +Drives < 500GB - 342+
    +Drives that fail zero test - 13+
+Drives that pass zero test, fail within 30 days - 2+
+Drives that pass zero test, fail within 60 days - 0+
+Drives that pass zero test, fail within 90 days - 3+
+Drives that pass zero test, fail within 180 days - 4+
    +Total drive failures within 6 months - 22 (4.77%) ~ 5%+
I don't have a manufacturer break down, I suppose I should start logging that more closely. Anyway...
I have a new MacBook Pro (13" @ 2.4GHz) and booting off the installation disc, from selecting the installer disc via the boot manager to the language selection screen is ~ 6 mins and 44 seconds. I use that as an average, I did it over 10 restarts but it was a pretty fair assessment. The fact that the installer is freezing is definitely cause for alarm, that's not normal or to be expected. Process of elimination would tell me the following:
    1.) The disc is bad
2.) The optical drive is bad
My understanding of the installer is the HD isn't initially accessed during the installer until you choose an install location (at which point it's mount point is verified).
Regarding the battery, your full charge capacity is going to bounce around the first couple of months, usually anywhere from 250-400 mAh. I noticed sporadic reporting until I reached the 50 cycle mark (or around 6 months based on usage). That being said, I don't see any problems or cause for alarm with the information you've reported.

  • Error opening both iTunes and Quicktime

Hey I'm having trouble opening iTunes, everytime I get the "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." window. And while opening Quicktime I recieve Error #63441 prompting me to check as to whether or not Quicktime is properly installed or not. Might I add that I have installed the standalone player nad still receive this message.
Furthermore, neither application shows up on my Add/Remove Programs list. Obviously I am now at a lost, if anyone could help me that would be more than fantastic.

    hi Sandy!
After downloading the standalone Quicktime installer and saving and running it, I received error 1722 - 'There is a problem with this Windows installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support ....'
hmmm. the 1722 isn't tremendously common. but in general low-1700-range errors seem to be associated with problems or interference with the Windows Installer on a PC. so we'll focus on that angle for a while.
first let's do some spring cleaning and maintenance.
download fresh definitions and run vigorous virus and spyware scans. if your security software providers offer "online" scans, run those as well. Then do a disk cleanup, run your favorite disk checking/repair utility, and do a disk defrag. reboot.
if that doesn't show anything up, head to Windows Update and make sure you're up-to-date in that regard. (we're trying to ensure here that you have Windows Installer 3.1v2 on your PC ... there were a few unusual problems on some PCs with 3.1v1.)
if that seems in order, try method 1 from this document (usually a better bet with a 1607, but worth a try with the low-1700s too):
How to resolve Common "Windows Installer" Problems
if no joy yet, let's try making sure that all background applications are switched off prior to the installs (just in case there's something else apart from just security software interfering with the install):
Close Applications Running in the Background
... and failing that, we throw the rest of the InstallShield Tips and Pointers at the beast (they can be of some help with the less-well-documented and/or recalcitrant errors):

  • Using aperture  with three monitors

This is both a tip and a question:
tip:  If you have 3 monitors, and the left one is set to be your primary display, then run the main aperture window on the middle one.  It an the right one will act the way it does with a 2 monitor setup.
If Aperture is run on the left display then either the other two displays are blank, or they both display the same thing.
    Question:
Is there a way to run aperture sensible using all 3 monitors?
E.g. I want browser on window 1, and the other two to span.
    or
browser on window 1, the other two screens have one in portrait, one in landscape, and aperture works to make best use of both displays -- e.g. a single pic will display on the monitor that fits it best, mutiple pix will spread out in a way that makes best use of the display.

    Paul
Right click in the desktop area of computer. Then click properties then settings. You should see TWO MONITORS in the top window.
Click on the No. 2 monitor then UNCHECK the Extend My Windows Desktop to this monitor setting.
Your laptop screen should be back to normal now.
Use as needed and reverse this setting when using the laptop in a 2 monitor scenario.

during my installation, there is Error pop up..!
    "internal error 2356. data1.cab"
hmm anyone know how to fix this problem?
    please help...
    thanks

    hi horsebag!
drat. if we're getting a strange error like that from a CD or online install, often doing a "local" install helps.
the error is not well documented (i'm not sure i've seen one before on an itunes install). but we've had success with these rarer sorts of errors in the past by using the general installation advice from this document:
Troubleshooting iTunes, iPod Software, and QuickTime installation on Windows
... augmented by the InstallShield Tips and Pointers:
InstallShield Consumer Central Frequently Asked Questions: Tips and Pointers
an error message mentioning a .cab file can be Windows-Installer-related, so let's also try method 1 from this document:

keep us posted. (there's a few other things which have worked for other cab-related error messages that we can try if we get no joy with these.)
