2 nVidia cards doesn't buy you any performance increases. They don't talk to each other to improve performance in Mac OSX. Multiple cards is mostly for supporting multiple displays. How many displays do you have?
Apple has some initial performance benchmarks:

  • Is there a fix for MAC Pro with Dual video cards that randomly logs off and on?

From my readings on the Internet this seems to be a know problem.  That even furthers my frustrations with the latest OS X upgrades.  So far on both my MACBOOK PRO and my MAC PRO it has been a major downgrade as both systems are no longer stable.  Enough with my complaints...
Is there any plan to address this problem with the MAC PRO?  I can't believe 10.8.1 didn't fix it.  More can be read on it at:
    http://jvm-technology.blogspot.com/2012/08/mac-pro-users-experiencing-random-log .html
Does anyone have work around to use dual screen monitors with the system?  I have two video cards, the article says to remove one.  Has this worked for anyone?  Can I use dual screens with the one video card.  Before I go messing around with these type of things I just want to be sure that this is a real fix.  For the price of the cards and the system I really can't believe apple has this issue in the first place and has not fixed it.

Self-hosted add-ons have to be fixed for every new version of Firefox. Two to 6 months for updating an add-on is ridiculous for a program which has a new version release every '''6 weeks'''. If that extension was hosted at the official Add-ons website, Mozilla would take take care of "bumping" that extension, as long as it keeps working, for every new version of Firefox, as the new version is released.
See this thread from yesterday, I posted instructions about how to "bump" that extension for Firefox 7.<br />
    https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/884484
You can also use this extension to "bump" an already installed extension for compatibility with the currently installed version of Firefox. <br />

  • Will my mac pro support this graphics card?

    Hi
I have a 2007 3.0GHZ Mac pro, the current graphics card in it -  ATI X1900 XT is giving me a lot of problems for a while now. I have taken it out cleaned it and put if back in but they are still happening. Then I found this artical about it -
    http://www.macrumors.com/2010/09/27/apple-finally-acknowledges-and-addresses-ati -x1900-xt-issue/
Looks like there was a problem with it and apple were replacing all the cards within 3 years of purchase which I have missed. So I want to buy a new one, but I want to make sure my mac will support it. The problem is I do video work so I want a decent one and it needs to have 2 DVI ports. Would my mac support this card

  • Advice Please for Sapphire HD 7950  Mac Edition Video Card

    Hello.
    I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro (5,1).
Was wondering if anyone out there in 'Mac Land' has had personal experience with the
Sapphire HD 7950  Mac Edition Video Card?
    In particular:
    Did you install it yourself?
Did you have any issues  after installing?
Does it live up to its hype?
Do you think it was worth the price?
Will it freak out when using BootCamp?
I'm thinking about upgrading from the installed HD 5870 card.
I run BootCamp with Windows 8 and Windows 7. My current Mac OS is 10.9.5.
    Thanks for your help.

Dear Paul S, John B here. I have a 2008 Mac Pro, single Quad Core-not state of the art  at all. I bought my sapphire radeon HD 7950 to replace an nVidia 8800, so that I could play Bio shock infinite on Steam. Yes, I installed it myself, it's a piece of cake.  I had no issues after installing. Some have...might have been that gpu switch on the side was defective, but not for me. to the right for mac, left for PC, as far as I know.  As for the hype, can't say.  It does the job quite well.  I now have a Mac that can use Display Port and HDMI for output rather than DVI (very handy for buying monitors- you can use a small LCD tv as one). I guess it was worth the price, to me it was, anyway.  I learned my lesson on older graphics cards: when they go, try to not have a fit, and see if you can replace them with something a bit better, and don't take your Mac in to your local Fruit PC store, cuz they don't have a clue about such things, and the Fruit PC company's policy is to replace like with like-period.  You can ask them to, but they won't put a better video card into your Mac Pro, even though you are willing to pay the difference to upgrade. Also, you are on their turf, so you will be paying their prices for that old video card. $360 for an 8800GT mac version? I don't think so, at least not again ! Freak out with Bootcamp? I don't think so.  I've never used it with bootcamp, but I did mention the switch, so I think you're covered there.  Maybe you'd have to download and install Windows drivers for that card but that's be about it.  You might try MacVidCards.com
but that's a crapshoot, as PC cards flashed to work with Mac may be.
    just my 2 cents

  • Can I use an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro Mac Edition 128MB Video Card in a Mac Min

Looking to buy a Mac mini.
In 2004 I upgraded the graphics card in my dual processor 450 MHz G4 desktop with an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro Mac Edition 128MB Video Card to run a 20-inch Cinema Display.
Now my G4 has died (probably the power supply and I'm being told it's not worth it to fix---buy a Mac mini!)
But I've read that the graphics card in the Mac mini is not stellar and I'm wondering if I could reuse the ATI Radeon 9000 Pro Mac Edition 128MB Video Card in the Mac mini. Would this be a good thing to do?
Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,

There are people that claim to have hooked up a PCI-e 1x card (yes, the Mini uses PCI-e). But that requires some serious hardware modifications including soldering, a PC power supply, and so on. But that card is an old AGP card so even that wouldn't even work for what you've got.

  • Windows and Mac Pro w/ Apple RAID card

It happened i have a need to run Windows natively on Mac Pro with Apple RAID card installed.
I know there is no Windows driver for that card, but i had a hope to bypass RAID card via connecting of internal SATA drive directly to iPass(SSF-8087) connector of Mac Pro's motherboard and using of that drive for Windows.
So, i've connected SATA drive this way and it works fine with OS X.
But i can't even try it with Windows because Mac Pro doesn't boot up from Windows installation CD if Apple RAID card installed
Empty black text console is all that i've got after selecting of Windows installation CD in EFI boot menu.
I need a suggestion how to bypass my problem, or generally speaking, how to install Windows onto Mac Pro with Apple RAID card.

    I've tried that.
Installation and booting of WinXP passed OK if RAID card removed.
But i've got black screen again trying to boot WinXP after RAID card re-installed.

Are you certain your work is compute-bound?
Insufficient RAM memory or too much competition for too few drives causes a system to have unused processor power, but complete the work too slowly.

  • Mac Pro with no airport card installed

I have a Mac Pro with no airport card installed....Can I just purchase an Airport express and connect by ethernet to the Mac pro.... I use Air port Extreme as my router for other computers

Yes, this is referred to as a ProxySTA in the business.
HOWEVER, this only became available with the 802.11n Express. I haven't yet seen it OFFICIAL if the new second generation still supports ProxySTA. I'm a bit hesitant to say yes, because the new express leans a little closer to the Extremes which work quite differently.  (haven't had time to test this yet myself)
I'm curious, why you don't just run an ethernet from your extreme to your Pro... I'm guessing because of the distance?

  • Questions about buying a new Mac Pro for 4k video editing.

    Hi everyone,
I'm currently looking into buying a new mac pro and I have a few questions. I'm a filmmaker/freelance editor looking to get a system that can handle any/at least most 4k formats that I might throw at it, and will hopefully last me around 7 years or so, like my last mac pro has. I've saved up about $5,300 and am becoming more obsessed with getting it asap, but am willing to wait a bit and save up more if necessary. I also play the occasional elder scrolls or civilization game, and might run windows on the new system as well. So here are my questions:
    1. I've read rumors that a newer build could be released this year, with newer processors and graphics cards. Is there anything to point to when? I tend to buy things a month before a newer version is released, and I'd like to prevent myself from doing it this time around..
Here's the Build I'm looking at:
    6 core
    2 D700s
base ram to be upgraded myself to 32Gb (2x16Gb cards leaving 2 slots empty to expand to 64Gb later)
    512Gb-1Tb internal hd
    2. Should I be considering the 8 core? I'm not too excited about the additional $1500, but I want a system that will last.
    3. Is getting the two 16Gb chips of ram and leaving two slots empty a bad idea?
    4. I currently work with FCP studio 2 and love it. Not sure whether to go with FCP X, or adobe. Any thoughts?
    5. I'm not finding many deals for cheaper ram and hard drives. OWC's prices seem to be comparable to Mac's. I want to do the ram so I have room to upgrade to 64Gb later, but are there any hard drives out there that would make it worth upgrading it myself?
I appreciate any insights you might have. I plan on getting a decent raid and 4k monitor in the next year or so, but for now just want a base system that will keep me editing and will be ready for 4k when I take that next step.

The late 2013 Mc Pro uses Intel Xeon ECC processors (error correction), and as far as I know Intel has not announced any newer Intel Xeon processors than those in the late 2013 Mac Pro.  I would not expect to see an update to the 2013 Mac Pro until the end of 2015 at the earliest and probably later than that.
If time is not an issue, then you should be quite happy with the 6 core 2013 Mac Pro.  It will do an excellent job with 4K video footage. And, yes, I would suggest getting the best raid system you can afford.  That is actually more important than processor speed since I/O is frequently the bottleneck when doing multi camera video or 4K video.
I have the latest version of Adobe's Premiere Pro 2014  CC installed on my late 2013 Mac Pro and i have used it a bit without problems.  However, I find it much much slower to edit with than FCP X.  Also be advised that if you Google you will find several individuals on the Adobe Forums who purchased the late 2013 Mac Pro and have not been able to use it with Premiere Pro CC because of either a hardware incompatibility or software issues between Premiere Pro CC and BMD's Resolve.  It is quite possible that I have not experienced these problems because I have not made very demanding projects with Premiere Pro CC on my 2013 Mac Pro.
I strongly recommend FCP X.  Apple released FCP X before it was ready, and many early users were unwilling to take the time to learn how to use this very different NLE which is not track based.  Apple has over the last 3 years since FCP X was released, issued more than 10 updates (all free), and the program is stable and blazingly fast.  I urge you to check out the FCP X training offered by Ripple Training and/or Larry Jordan. Both are inexpensive, and worth every cent.  Watch their training videos and you will be up to speed in FCP X in no time at all, and you will wish you had switched a long time ago.
If you can afford the 1 TB of PCie internal flash storage on your Mac Pro, then by all means get it.  For me 1TB is well worth the cost.
As far as editing 4K video, the format of the video will be important to the ease of editing.  For example, I am able to edit in its native format (XVAC S) several streams of 4K video form my Sony FDR-AX100 with no problems.  If I were editing Sony's XVAC format used in their professional 4K cameras, that might pose a problem that would require transcoding.  Similarly for other 4K formats. XVAC S is an easy format to edit natively because it is essentially a high bit rate h.264 format.
Best of luck on whatever you decide to do, and happy editing.
    Tom

  • Mac Pro not sending video to my DV Camera

    Hi,
I have been editing on a PowerMac G5 using FCP 5.1.4 and outputting to tape on my Sony TRV900 MiniDV camera with no problems for over a year.
I have recently bought a Mac Pro, and although I can get footage OFF to camera, the Mac Pro appears not to be sending out any video out through firewire to the camera.
I re-hooked up my G5 and everything works perfectly there - so I guess this rules out the camera or the cable.
View menu > External Video is set to All Frames
Audio/Video Settings, video playback is set to Apple Firewire PAL
I have had both systems side by side and made sure EVERY preference is identical - the only difference is the computer!
I have unplugged every other device so that the camera is the only firewire (or USB) device attached to the computer, and have tried both FW400 ports.
I really don't want to have to lug my heavy computer to an Apple Store for them to look at it...
Has anyone got any clever ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    Dom

Well - I've solved the problem.
It seems the Mac Pro firewire bus cant send the correct signal out to my DVCam.
I bought a Sonnet Tango Express PCIe card, it has 2 FW400 ports and 3 USB2 ports, when my DVCam is plugged into this new FW bus, everything works.
I don't know whether this problem is down to MY Mac Pro, or whether all mac Pros will have the same problem. Either way, it seems a bit wrong for Apple to sell a flagship product, ideal for editing, and not have the FW bus work properly.
I now have a working computer, and it's big hassle to cart it off to an Apple store, so I think I'll leave the issue here and not pursue it with Apple.

  • Can the new $2500 Macbook Pro Edit 4K Video?

I'm very close to purchasing a new 15" Top of the line Macbook Pro to replace my six+ year old iMac 24" Extreme Edition. I want to buy as future-proof a Mac as I possibly can, while getting the entire package in a laptop as I need a laptop this time around for a side project.
As beastly as the new Macbook Pro is (16GB RAM, Discrete GeForce Graphics)  - would anyone know if it has the power to edit 4K Video?

You can do all things, you can do at an other Mac with the MacBook Air. But for the most programs isn't enough power in the MacBook Air. So your programs like Photoshop wouldn't be as fast as with an MacBook Pro or an other Mac...
