SATA 1 port or SER 1 port?? Help

If I'm building a new rig and all I'm installing for a hard drive is a 160GB Seagate SATA drive but am not going to be using RAID at all, should I use the SATA 1 port or the SER 1 port on the mobo?  Does it matter?
And, do I need to load the drivers from both disks that came with the mobo or just the ones that apply to the particular port I use?  The mobo came with a Promise 376/378 Driver floppy and a VT8237 Driver Floppy.
Here are some specs:
AMD 64 3200+
MSI K8T-NEO FIS2R
Seagate 160GB SATA hard drive
CD-ROM/DVD drive
I've been trying to build this computer for a friend for about two weeks and we've encountered some problems during Windows XP Pro installation.  After what we thought was a successful install of XP and several days of use, we got an Unmountable Boot Volume blue screen as XP loaded.  I ran diagnostic utilities for the hard drive which showed no problems with it.
The other day we did a fresh installation of XP but this time we received a Windows Logo Testing error message for the WinXP Promise SATA378 IDE Controller.  We also got Device Installer errors for the diskdrive, CD-ROM and battery.
What's weird now is that the CD-Rom is not even listed as a drive in the My Computer tab.  All it shows there is the C: hard drive and A: floppy drive.  If we put a CD into the drive, the light comes on for a few seconds but nothing happens.  Otherwise, I'm certain that the CD-rom drive itself is working properly.
Can anyone help??

Okay, I've been testing out the RAM for a couple of hours now on Memtest86 while tweaking the BIOS settings.  The memory we have is 2x512 Mushkin 3200 Level 1.
So far, nothing has yielded perfect error-free test cycles in Memtest.  I've had a few cycles where i got as little as 4 errors.  Some full cycles yielded 6 errors, another one, 9.  Some were as high as 8,500+.
I have not tested the individual RAM modules yet.  I'll do that tomorrow.
This particular board seems to like the DDR333 setting better than DDR400 - at least as far as Memtest goes.  I've tested mostly in Slots 1 and 2 and then in 1 and 3.  When I put the sticks in Slots 2 and 3 I got a BSOD with some sort of Bad_Config_ message.  I found this interesting since the mobo manual on page 2-11 lists Slots 2 and 3 at DDR333 as a recommended combination.
Also, for whatever it's worth, most if not all of the Memtest errors are occurring during Tests 5 and 7.  I think the Memtest86 website notes this as being common among AMD64 CPUs.
Anyway, I have two specific questions:
1) Should I be tweaking the CAS latency setting in BIOS?? I know this is memory related but I don't even know what it does.
2) As far as Memtest goes, how good is good enough before I should consider RMA'ing a RAM module?  Should I expect perfect error-free Memtest scores??  Should I give the system to my friend and see if he experiences any crashes?  I'm not sure at what point to be satisfied that the memory we have is good or defective.
Thanks.

  • Promise T3 Sata II Ports

Are the two Promise T3 Sata II ports usable for normal sata drives on my K9A2 platinum ?
I am a little confused by the designation in the specs which says:
"2 SATA II (5~6) ports by Promise® T3, support SAS ready devices, for storage devices only"
What does it mean when it says "for storage devices only" ? Perhaps this is just another way of saying for hard drives rather than CD/DVD drives.
If these ports are usable for sata hard drives do I have to do anything in the BIOS or in Windows ( Vista or 7 ) in order to use sata drives off of these ports ?

Hi eldiener again ,yes , you can use them with normal HDD-s (only).
If you need drivers for Windows 7 there is a solution to mod Promise drivers
Take a look here (available via forum FAQ)-> https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=146046.0
For one drive performance is weak ~ 140 megs per second.
I ll thank Bas again for adding this to the forum FAQ.

  • 655 MAX-FISR SATA RAID PORT

(wonkanoby, can you use the force to help me on this one?)
    Configuration:
MSI 655 Max FISR 6730 (non HT) MoBo
    Antec True 400W
    (2)Western Digital (10,000 rpm) Raptors
    Intel P4 2.66ghz
    MSI TI4800 8XAGP
    Plextor 48/40/48 burner
    MSI 52X CDROM
    Problem:
The second SATA port is not working (ser2)
both drives have been tested and work fine.  (ser1) shows the drives seperately in the array.  (ser2) does not show either of the drives.
I have tried tons of different configurations, cleared CMOS, re-seated everything, disabled/re-enabled SATA in bios, still nothing.
???Does anyone have any ideas/tricks to get this (ser2) port working correctly so I can setup both harddrives???
    Background:
I have already had to send back (MRA-NewEgg) this board one time because of a similar problem that I did not spend a lot of time troubleshooting.  I know that a lot of people are having problems and that the SiS 655 sucks! :O  This time I decided to troubleshoot and that it might be something small I was missing.  No such luck.  I do not feel like sending this back and losing another week of use on this workstation unless absolutely necessary.  I do have this same board on a similar system with (2)SATA Seagate 7200 drives and it works great.  I am really losing my respect for MSI though as I have never had a bad motherboard from other companies, and this is 2 in a row for MSI.  I even tried this:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/e_service/forum/index.php?threadid=18931&boardid=10&sid=2ffcacaf0448de534331ac97aaa46912
    with no luck.
    Advice:
If I can't get this working and return, I really do not want to get another 655 board.  I have not read up yet on the (Canterwood 875P Chipset) boards from MSI.  Has there been similar issues / problems with SATA Raid as the 655 has?  Im thinking of just paying the restocking fee with NewEgg and going with an Intel Canterwood board.  Sure, the overclocking is not as good as other manufacturers, but this is a work machine so it won't be OC anyway.  I would rather go with stability.  Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

  • TCP/IP Printer ports - HELP PLEASE

I have a large inkjet printer that I print my graphic design to... for years it has been set up and printing just fine through an Actiontec M1424-WR-rev.D router. No setting were ever changed in the router, it just worked great right out of the box (the Verizon guys installed it). I had a small router with the cable company, but when I got the new router from Verozon the install guy said i didn't need it any more, and moved the ethernet plugs over to the new router. Everything worked fine for years... until the wireless functions started to fail (I don't use the wireless for the office, just the family), so, Verizon told me I had to replace it with a new M1242WR - rev. I router. I transfered all the cables over the the new router in exactly the same positions the were in on the old router. Now my printing software (RIP software) can't see the printer when it's routed through the FiOS router, but If I move the ethernet cable from the router and plug it into the back of my computer, which disconnects my computer from the network and gives me a dedicated ethernet connection to the printer... everything works fine. It's just when I try and run it through the router that my computer and printer can't talk to each other.
My RIP software that drives the printer demands a STATIC IP address set up in a TCP/IP printing port, and the printer is set up with the corresponding static IP address (this is unavoidable). Images of the setup screens below...
The RIP software setup is here... very simple:
Now, on the actual printer, the IP address matches (192.168.0.110), the subnet masks are 255.255.255.0, and the default gateway is set at 192-168.0.1.
This is all the info I have, and all I know is that it worked fine with no setup on the old router, and does NOT work on the new router... it used to be plug-n-play, now it's plug-n-stop.
Again, when the ethernet cable run directly from the computer it drives the printer just fine, connected to the router first and it failes completely.... HELP!!!!!!!!!!
Like I said... this has worked great for years, I haven't changed a thing on the printer or computer... the only change is the new router... I'm out of production until I figure this out (
    Cabe...

The revision I router out of the box uses the following default IP addresses
    192.168.1.x IP Address
    255.255.255.0 Subnet
    192.168.1.1 Default gateway
I notice you aren't using that IP Address scheme at all in the screen shots.  Did you change the Verizon router internal settings to use the 0.1 ip scheme?

  • GTX980 gaming 4G - Display Ports HELP ME PLEASE!!! so stressed

    Hi
today I bought this video card and 3x Benq XL2430T monitors, nearly $2500 AU dollars worth of gear
and all i can do is get 1 friggin screen working via the DVI
    I am running drivers 344.80
I have installed Benq monitor drivers
ALL the monitors show as all connected in windows Device manager and in NCP, 1 with the DVI, and 2x on Display Ports. when I try to activate the monitors plugged into the DPs via RIGHT CLICK on desktop and CHANGE RESOLUTION... I select one of the monitors on the display port and try to tell windows to extend desktop onto them, it reports "unable to save display settings" and the resolution/orientation are greyed out. if i boot with all connected as described i don't get any displays working, will only ever get 1x display of the desktop via DVI if booted with nothing plugged into DP's.
this is so stressing... not a nice way to start Holidays :(
can anyone help me out here??
I could get triples going on my old GTX590 using different monitors... i buy latest and greatest card and monitors and its all for POOH!!! ARGH!!!

    HI Nichrome
    thanks for your reply....
yes the BIOS is the latest... did it tonight (just about had a nervous breakdown in the process    )
i don't mean to be ignorant but whats the OC got to do with a connection between a monitor and a video card got to do with anything ??
i have done numerous clean installs of numerous different driver versions the ones supplied with the card, 344.75 & 344.16 & lastly the supposed HOTFIX 344.80's
tried a HDMI cable for giggles and it works fine (had DVI & HDMI going simultaneously) so its only the DP's that appear to not function properly (which i need as i want to run triples at 144mhz).  i tested all monitors separately via DVI and they all work fine. the Card is working fine if using the DVI or HDMI ports. the issue is specifically all of the DISPLAY PORTS
if i use a DP to DVI adapter do you think that would make a difference?

  • MSI GT60 with Vertex 4 SSD - Freezing, won't load Windows only in SATA III port

    Hello,
New to the world of SSD's and trying to get my Vertex 4 to be able to operate at 6 Gb/s. I know that in my MSI GT60 that it has to be in port 1 because that is where the SATA III controller is, port 4 is just a SATA II. I was able to update the Vertex 4 to firmware version 1.5 and when it is plugged into port 4, no issues at all. It will run and take anything i throw it while running at 3 Gb/s in SATA II mode. My port 1 currently houses a 500gb Western Digital Scorpio drive.
As soon as i throw the Vertex 4 in port 1, issues arise. Sometimes i get a disk read error right after bios, sometimes it just freezes. On the latest Intel RST for my board, 11.2.0.1006 it can actually boot on occasion but 90% of the time freezes but still only reads 3 Gb/s when it does boot. It does the same thing in version 11.1.0.1006 and any older RST it just freezes or says disk read error and never boots.
I have my bios set to AHCI mode and i have tried the Vertex 4 by itself and also with the WD 500gb in the other port. When i switch back to Vertex 4 in port 4 and WD in port 1, no issues at all. Just trying to see if this is a known issue or anything else i can look at.  I made sure to break the RAID 0 and it was a clean install of windows 7 to the drive.
Running on bios E16F3IMS.10M.  The Vertex 4 is at its latest firmware as well.  I do have one PCI device i can't identify in Windows and thinking it might be the issue but can't narrow it down.  I have the Intel RST installed.
I also posted this on the OCZ forum and did their tips as well.
    Thanks!
    James

  • Macbook pro midi port help

hi can anyone help me with following midi set up puzzler . .
i want to attach 4 bcr 2000 midi controllers to propellerheads reason 4.
i have mapped one properly, through the remote map process.
all 4 are attached to the macs right hand side usb port via a Addon adduh070p 7 port usb hub.
when i try and map the remaining 3 in reasons preferences it states 'these control surfaces are using the same input / output port (s). i guess its refering to the fact they are all going in via the same usb port.
my audio set looks like this....

thanks in advance if u can help

    hi, yes its powered independantly.
my query is essntially about wether i need to specifically do any mapping in audio midi set up to enable reasons preferences to see each as a different port and wether this was the route to the solution or would the macbook pro see the hub as one port no matter what ? any ideas ?

  • TRUNK PORTS (HELP URGENT)

    Dear all
Last night I configured the trunk ports between all my switches, Its a redundant circuit. I did the last one that plugs back into the core switch and it took all of my building out, I could not get to any other switch, For some reason spanning tree blocked the trunk ports that I set up on the last switch !!!!
When setting up trunks between switches I presume you have to set 2 trunks per switch ? i.e 1 trunk to previous switch and another to the next switch !!!!

  • Warcraft III Reign of Chaos/Frozen Throne Port Help?

I have a Wireless-G Broadband Router Model WRT54G and I want to host games in Warcraft III while still having my router connected. I do not know how to find my port number. Can someone help find it?Message Edited by Melty on 01-16-200704:37 PM

    Hi...
The port number for Warcraft III is 6112. In order to forward the port 6112, make sure that the computer that u are hosting on has a static IP address. Also make sure that all the firewalls on your computer allow traffic from port 6112 to be allowed.

  • Z77 vs ASMEDIA Sata III ports

Does anyone have any information on what the differences between the z77 and asmedia sata controllers are?
I have a plextor (Marvell) based ssd and am thinking it could be better on the asmedia port but can find no info.

Finally found the answer, you can only have 6 sata port on an intell z77 controller. They give you an extra two and they are inferior. (Or so says some guy on another forum)
I did find some benchmarking that said the am slots were worse. Ive got this up and running for now so after a night of folding to test, i am going to turn off oc genie and do some real oc'ing.

So, i tried to plug my phone into the cable becuase it was about to die. when i plugged it into the cable it wasnt charger. i did everything possibel, switched outlets, changed chargers nothing is working. i think the little connector on the inside is messed up and im not sure what to do. Is this covered in the warinty or not? i need help asap. any help or leads would be very appreciated. Thanks

        Dmulrine,
Yikes no iPhone is no fun, so lets get this fixed! If it is in fact the charger port on your device that has gone out, provided there is no physical or liquid damage, your phone can be replaced under the year manufacture warranty. Since you have already tried using a different charger and outlet the last thing you may want to try is soft reset. A soft reset can be preformed on your device by holding down the power and home button at the same time until you see the Apple symbol. Your device will then reset and you can try the charger again. If the issue still persist please feel free to contact us so we can set your device to be replaced.
    Thank you,

  • Something is wrong with the claimed speed of GE70 2oe, can't be dual sata 3 port

Hi! I have bought a msi ge70 2oe with the 2 msata sandisk u100 64gb drives. One thing i just can't  understand is the perfomance of the ssds. I mean its far better then hdds, but it can't be running on dual sata 3 6gbits ports. I just hope someone can confirm that it's actually 2 sata 2 3gbits ports. I have made a clean install of windows 8 with the intel rst drivers, everything is running smooth but the scores on the new haswell refresh is not close to (double) sata 3 raid speeds, i just can't understand why they stuck with dual sata 2 speeds.
I've just purchased a couple of intel 525 180GB msata ssds for more space for games and better write and random speeds. But i'm dissapointed that msi say it can run at 900 MB and over. Hdtune pro is not reliable for testing ssds, so here are my crystaldiskmark sandisk raid score.
please post if you have better results
