SATA 3 disk wont work in my Optibay

When I bought my MBP 2011 I removed the superdrive and put in a HDD caddy into the optibay. I placed an SSD SATA3 in the primary slot and the original disk in the optibay. This worked fine.
Last week I bought a 2TB disk which is 15mm and as such needs to go into the primary bay to fit. When I placed the SSD SATA 3 disk in the optibay slot, the disk is not recognised. However if I swap the 2 disks around (without replacing the back) they both work fine.
Has anyone had this problem? I have checked and both the SATA connection are 6gb.

i do have this issue in mbp 2011, in which both main and optipay reports 6bps speed, but when we try crucial m500 ssd in optibay it is not stable. Accessing the ssd is slow and beach balls always.

  • Recovery Disk wont work

I have a Qosmio F15-AV201 that came with Windows XP. I formatted the hard drive and planned to reinstall Windows and all of the Toshiba software. My recovery disk would not work. I had Toshiba send me a new disk, it would not work. Apparently, since I had the motherboard replaced, under the Circuit City extended warranty, the laptop will no longer recognize the recovery disks. I have contacted Toshiba several times for help. All they would tell me to do, was take it to the authorized service center. I sent it off to the service center. It cost me $140 to have the original Toshiba software installed. The bad part is, they still cant give me a recovery disk. When I have trouble in the future, I won't be able to reinstall anything. Does anyone have any advice?

well it wont boot to the cd if you dont tell it to. when the laptop gets to the toshiba splash screen hit F12. the go over to the boot tab and move cd/dvd up to the top of the list. then save and exit. insert the recovery media and then reboot. it should start the with the dvd. make sure it is very clean and no scratches. i guess it is still up and running from toshiba fixing it so when you are in windows look for recovery media creator. if it is there try to make a new set of media since they would have reformated and put the partitions back.

  • Recovery Disk wont work for new Hard drive.

I have a HP Pavilion dv5-2132dx with windows 7 64-bit. Recently a message started popping up warning that the hard drive might fail and I need to back up my data. I decided to buy a new hard drive. The hard drive a bought is 320GB SATA 7200RPM by western digital. It is the same brand and model as the hard drive currently in the computer. I popped in the new hard drive and inserted the recovery disks I bought from HP. The computer goes through the whole process of istalling the disks. However, on the final setup it shows the welcome screen. Then u hear a beep and then the screen goes black with a message saying that windows could not install and to try installing it again. I have done this 3 times and its always the same thing. Is this a Hard drive issue or a software issue and how can i get this to work?

    Hi,
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
Assuming that this is just a problem with the Recovery process, there is a straight forward work around.
Create a retail Windows 7 installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image from the link below ( this must be the exact version your notebook came with ) and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source, however there are only limited versions available.
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

  • 10.3 retail disks wont work on my 20" iMac

I have a 2004 iMac G5 20" 1.8GHz (no ALS or iSight) for which Ive lost the install/restore disks.  I bought black 10.3 retail disks on Ebay, but they wont load.  Is is possible my iMac came with later version (10.3.5)? Are these available to buy?

It would have come with Tiger 10.4.x.
You need to get replacement install disks. Call Apple and quote your Mac's serial number and they will send them for a small fee.

  • 10.6 snow leopard installment disk wont work

i recently got a second hand 2006 mac book, and i got it with the snowleopard 10.6 installment disk, and i get to the part where i have to restart my computer and it is still showing the apple logo and won't turn back on to the desktop. it's been like this for almost 24 hours.

If your MacBook was originally running 10.5.8, as others indicate your 10.6 disc must look like:
and not say Upgrade, Dropin, or OEM.    If uncertain what your MacBook was running there are external ways of identifying its age:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6413
MacBooks released new on or after August 28, 2009 but before March 15, 2010 require a 10.6.3 retail disc (labelled in small letters on the above image), also available from the mail order Apple Store.  Newer MacBooks based on release date require the system specific MacBook disc that matches the name of the machine ordered from AppleCare if they are missing up to July 20, 2011.  July 20, 2011 Apple discontinued the MacBook lineup and left behind just the Air and Pro, and stopped issuing system specific discs for the Air, and October 24, 2011, stopped issuing them for the Pro with 10.6 on them, prebundling the machines with an internet restore for 10.7 or later.  Before considering whether to install 10.7, read this tip:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
Pro models also have a secondary PRAM battery which may need replacing.
A damaged directory can also be the cause of its booting this manner.  If your data isn't backed up, read this tip on recovery:

  • 5th sata port wont work

I have been using my NF750-G55 for about a year now and I just purchased a new hard drive that I want to install and the only open sata port that I can connect it to is the 5th vertical sata port on the board. When I plug any and all hardware into this port nothing happens. I have the latest bios installed (version 1.7) and am using windows 7 x64  Is there anyway of fixing this issue?

Try to put your headphones several times in and out from your connection, might be the switch is stuck. Normally it should work again while trying to plug the headphones in and out!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
This is the image contained in the file causing the problem...
I certain the original is contained in the Combo updates and on the OS disks.
As a temporary fix, click on the image above to open it.
Use Screen capture (Shift+Command+4) and click on the opposite corners of the image.
It will be saved as a Screen shot 2011-mm-dd at hh:mm.png
Right click on the filename in Finder and rename it to mwmac_white.png
I'm not certain, but the file might need to be moved into the Documents directory in the Subdirectory named for the website name you are editing. That's where it is on my system, but I moved a bunch of files when I restored from Time Machine about 18 months ago.
I also have many copies of mwmac.png, a separate copy one for each web page where the image appears in my website.

  • SATA Disk won't work without a IDE disk connected.

    Hi, my specs :
    k8n neo2 platinum
    amd xp3000+
    crucial 3200 ddr memory
    Samsung Spinpoint S-ATA 160GB
(IBM 70GXP IDE 40GB) Just in the box to make the S-ata drive work
    NEC DVD-RW
I've been running this machine now for 3-4 months, with both HDD's. Today I decided to remove the noisy IBM disk from the system. I removed it from the Primary IDE Slave and made the DVD-RW stay alone on the Primary IDE.
So, now the only thing I got installed is the S-ATA disk on SATA3 or SATA4 slots.
and the NEC DVD-RW on Primary Master.
    The problems starts here
Now my machine only goes to bios and stops because : INSERT SYSTEM DISK blablabla...
My SATA disk is properly displayed in BIOS as a working HDD. No problem there... I have tried everything, believe me... Everything that can be done... I have changed the Sata disk to all diffrent SATA slots, 1/2/3/4 and Cleared the BIOS, resetted the bios you name it.
But, when i install the IDE disk (ibm disk) on the Primary Slave IDE, everything works well!
PS: The IBM disk is just a MP3 disk that doesn't store anything else than that.
But!, in Windows, the IBM disk is named C:\ and the System disk (on the S-ATA drive) is named D:\ (no problems running WinXP at all with that issue)
This is really annoing, like i'm going to have that noise IBM disk in my chassis forever!

Your problem is that you had the ide disk connected when installing xp on the sata (3'rd master).
Windows_inst always use a disk on 1'st or 2'nd ide channel as system drive if it finds one (the first it sees) . So the ntldr,boot.ini,ntdetect.com is placed there .
When you remove the IBM drive there is no boot drive anymore .
What you should have done when installing windows to the sata drive
is to temporary disconnect all drives in front of it , so that the sata 3'rd master
is the first disk win_install sees .
Now you have registry of all programs and such pointing to D: in that win installation.
You should take the time to do a fresh new install with only the sata drive connected . This makes it system drive and it's partition C: .

  • Transforming G4 in a fileserver with Sata disks is not working

    Hi,
I know nothing about building servers or raids or anything but what I do know is that I would like to use my old G4 digital audio 533MHZ as a fileserver.
I've read on many forums you need a PCI sata card but, converters also do exist. I couldn't find why a converter wouldn't work so I bought a IDE to Sata converter since I'm only putting 1X 1TB WD SATA disk in there right now.
This converter cable can only be plugged into the ATA66 IDE, that's why I connected my ATA boot disk with Tiger on the ATA33 and disconnected the optical drive because otherwise Tiger doesn't boot.
The G4 only boots up from this ATA when the SATA is disconnected. With the SATA connected the G4 absolutely wants to boot from the SATA drive giving me a grey screen and nothing else. I was kind of expecting that the G4 would search for a bootable drive and boot from it but it doesn't. The ATA drive jumpers are on Cable Select. The SATA drive has no jumpers.
Next thing I could try is install Tiger or Leopard on the SATA drive. Would this work?
Is this because of the converter I'm using?  Is the only way of doing this with a PCI SATA card?
    Please enlighten me.

I should've known it wouldn't work with the converter so I bought the Sonnet PCI SATA controller on Amazon.
On the controller I connected my 1TB RED NAS drive and put in my new WIFI networkcard I used before in my G5. (The G5 will get it's internet connection  from the G4 trough firewire in the future)
Now I was ready to get started with my fileserver, so I tought.
Every time I booted, the mac would freeze, every time when the screensaver started.
My troubleshooting led me to an faulty Ati Rage 128, 32MB graphic card.
I still had one 16MB laying around from my disassembled G4/400MHZ and now everything was ok.
Little did I know that making this server accessible for my laptop with WIN 7 would be very hard.
Eventually I found the solution on the internet where you have to disable some services on the WIN 7 machine.
One of those services is to disable  the Pasword LAN Manager because if you don't Windows will keep asking your credentials without ever connecting to the server.
To my big surprise I noticed that only the Home directory on the MAC was shared and not my 1TB drive!
This is because my server runs on Tiger 10.4.11 where you can't choose the folders you want to share unlike Leopard.
It was hopeless until I found, after long searching the net, a reference to a program called 'Sharepoints' and bingo.
This program enables you to share whatever folder or drive on tiger just like in Leopard.
Now I have full control over my Mac server from WIN 7 and on my Iphone 4, I added an Free FTP app and an app called 'TIOD'.
This last, free, app is truly amazing.
Now I can browse all my shared drives on the MAC from my Iphone.
I can stream movies, and my music on the fly! Very cool.
This G4 is running silent and has only a 200W PSU wich makes it perfect.
Now there would be only 1 thing I want to do and this is to make it a webserver but if the ISP blocks port 80, 81 it seems impossible.
It could be done by using a service for wicht you have to pay but that's not worth it if you just want accessibillity to your files I think.
    Or is there another way?
    Please let me know.
    Thnx.

i have not set up time machine either but i do back up to a site called backupblaze...

    Step 1
    Remove "MacKeeper" as follows.
"MacKeeper" has only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Reboot.
Failure to remove MacKeeper will result from neglecting any one of these points:
Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
Don't empty the Trash after dragging the application to it. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
Don't try to drag the MacKeeper icon in the Dock to the Trash.
Here are some general suggestions. If you want your computer to be usable, don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this stuff is useless, or worse than useless.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
The only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.
    Step 2
Restore from the last backup that predates the unwanted changes.

  • Difficulty detecting SATA disk, adding a second SATA disk, memory conflict, etc

I resolved the SATA problem in the middle of writing this post, but for others’ benefit in the future, I am still describing it here.  But there are still some unresolved problems.
    ========================================================
I have an Intel P4 2.4 GHz CPU.
My MSI motherboard has the words 865PE Neon 2P on it.
    BIOS is AmiBIOS 3.31a.
I cannot tell what display card I have.  I do not see any brand printed on the card.
I have an (internal) 37 GB IDE hard disk (I cannot see the brand and I am too lazy to un-mount it) as the C drive.
About 3 years ago I added another internal disk, 150GB Western Digital WD 1600, SATA as the E drive.
I have a copy of Windows XP Pro SP2 on each of these two hard drives but I always boot on C.
I also have 2 DVD drives (Drives D and G) and 6 (2 at the side and 4 at the back) USB ports.
A shop installed everything for me and things have been well.  I did not record the BIOS settings so I do not know how it was set up.  My nightmare started about 2 weeks ago when my PC suddenly did not detect E, i.e. the SATA drive.  I had not done anything to the BIOS setting or otherwise, so I have no idea why the E drive suddenly disappeared.
At that time, the Standard CMOS Features in the BIOS setting was:
Primary IDE Master - Not Installed
    Primary IDE Slave - IC35L060AVV207-0
Secondary IDE Master - Pioneer DVD ROM
Secondary IDE Slave - Lite On DVD ROM
Third IDE Master - Not Installed
Third IDE Slave - Not Installed
Fourth IDE Master - Not Installed
Fourth IDE Slave - Not Installed
I tried many things and finally bought a hard disk enclosure and put that SATA in it and connect it to one of the USB ports.  It works.
This morning I stumbled on this article "Motherboard can't detect SATA hard disk" at http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php?topic=119738.0 and also “Q: How to enable both SATA and PATA? “ on “NEO Boards Unofficial FAQ rev 4/05/2004 - two lights on "P" series” at https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=21469.0 taking about the On-Chip IDE Configuration section of  the BIOS menu and I decided to give it a try, so that I can get rid of that hard disk enclosure.
It works, kind of.  I saw that it was set to Legacy Mode, P-ATA Only, SATA Keep Enabled=No, PATA Keep Enabled=No, PATA Channel Selection=Both, Combined Mode Option=PATA 1st Channel, SATA Ports Definition= P0-3rd/P1-4th. So following the advice on the article and the FAQ, I reset it to Legacy Mode, P-ATA + S-ATA, SATA Keep Enabled=No, PATA Keep Enabled=No, PATA Channel Selection=Both, Combined Mode Option=PATA 1st Channel, SATA Ports Definition= P0-Master/P1-Slave.  Now my PC could detect the SATA drive and set it as the D drive (and the IDE remained as Drive C) but my two DVD ROMs disappeared.  The Standard CMOS Features in the BIOS setting was:
    Primary IDE Slave - IC35L060AVV207-0
Secondary IDE Master - WDC WD1600JD-00HBB
    The rest is Not Installed.
So, I (only) changed Combined Mode Option to SATA 1st Channel. So apparently my PC now booted using the WinXP copy on the SATA disk (recall that I have WinXP on both hard disks).  And now the SATA disk is C, and both DVD ROMs are visible.  My IDE disk disappeared.
Now I went back to the BIOS menu and switched back to PATA 1st Channel, reset it back to P-ATA Only, and changed SATA Keep Enabled=Yes.  Voila.  Now I can see my IDE disk as Drive C, SATA disk as Drive D, the two DVD ROMs as Drives E and G.  Everything looks fine except that some of the start-up programs no longer start up apparently because their paths used to be E:\.... but now the disk they are on was renamed from E to D so the operating system cannot locate them.  And the Standard CMOS Features menu reads:
Primary IDE Master - Not Installed
    Primary IDE Slave - IC35L060AVV207-0
Secondary IDE Master - Pioneer DVD ROM
Secondary IDE Slave - Lite On DVD ROM
Third IDE Master - Not Installed
Third IDE Slave - Not Installed
Fourth IDE Master - WDC WD1600JD-00HBB
Fourth IDE Slave - Not Installed
Problem 1 (the main problem): Difficulty detecting SATA disk – Resolved.  If anyone is kind enough, maybe you can tell me and others why suddenly the BIOS setting was changed by itself causing all these problems, and why “P-ATA Only, SATA Keep Enabled=Yes” works but “P-ATA + S-ATA, SATA Keep Enabled=No” does not.  Should I now tweak the Windows registry to change the drive letter of the SATA disk from D to E?
Problem 2: I just bought an internal Hitachi Deskstar 640GB SATA disk.  And I have a vacant orange SATA connector on my mobo.  Can I add it together with the existing 2?  Would it be set up as Third IDE Master, Fourth IDE Slave, or something else?
Problem 3: I used to have a Samsung DDR PC2700 512MB memory module and during the last week I added a Corsair DDR PC3200 1GB memory module, both on the green slots (not the purple slots).  It caused my PC to freeze (keyboard and mouse not responsive) every now and then.  So I pulled out the Samsung one and it has been working fine.  Some said one has to use memory from the same manufacturer with the same size and same everything.  The sticky thread titled “NEO Boards Unofficial FAQ rev 4/05/2004 - two lights on "P" series” in this forum has a question “I have this RAM xxxx but it does not work with my board. Can MSI update the BIOS to fix this?” and the answer points to a Product Info page and I don’t know where that is. Any advice on how to make both work together?  Can I use the purple slots?
Problem 4: The “usable” space on my Dell M991 CRT monitor has shrunk.  That is, the black areas on both sides, mostly RHS, have intermittently enlarged.  It only happened in these 2 weeks. I tried Control Panel – Display – Settings – Advanced – Displays – Adjustments to no avail.  I don’t have another monitor to try in order to test whether it has to do with the CRT.  Just in case you happen to know anything, please jot a line.
Problem 5: Some of my USB ports do not work or only work intermittently.  For example I plugged in my wireless adaptor into one of them and it sometimes would say “USB Device Not Recognized”.

If it is a SATA-II Drive, you will probably have to force it into SATA-I Compatibility mode first (check the hard drive user manual for jumper settings or firmware switches).

Exactly.  Mixing different memory modules causes problems in many cases because the exact same settings will apply to both modules at the same time.  What works for the one module may not work so well for the other one.

That is either related to the monitor itself or to the video card.  It may also be related to a problem with the driver or improper screen resolution settings.

  • [VIA] KT6 Delta hangs when I install SATA disk

I've had a lot of problems with my PC - maybe related to the mobo, maybe not. I have a KT6 Delta LSR - and was running XP SP2 with a SATA disk on it. Not RAID - just standalone. It ran OK for about 4 months, then it crashed hard. For the last two weeks I'm trying to get my system back, but its not looking good. I think the CPU or mobo overheated - it was running about 62C - then I installed a new CPU fan and tried to render a DVD when it locked up and apparently wrecked my disk. I bought a brand new SATA disk and a new IDE disk. I installed XP fresh on the IDE disk. That runs OK. I removed the "old" disk (4 months old) from the system and installed a brand new SATA disk. But when I install the VIA SATA drivers, XP falls apart. By that I mean it can take up to 45 minutes to boot up (with an Athlon 3000+, 1Gb memory) and it acts VERY sluggish when I do finally get in.
I don't know what to do. I'd like to try to recover data from my "old" disk to the new SATA disk, but the SATA drivers make working in XP impossible. I have bought a new motherboard - an ABIT board that supports SATA, but I hate to go to the trouble of replacing the mobo, if the problem is with SATA. Maybe SATA is not ready for general use yet? Is it still being developed and maybe it is generally unstable? As long as I'm, with IDE, everything seems stable. What should I do to get data off my SATA drive? I'm sorry I ever went SATA, that's for sure. Never again.
Should I install XP on the new SATA drive like I did back in May and see if I can get data off the "old" drive - then maybe copy it to a network location somewhere? I have two fairly new 250 Gb. SATA drives that are basically useless. Unbelievable.

I did not change the CPU. Just the CPU's fan. I did not reset the CMOS after doing that. I have a Thermaltake power supply and 1GB of  Corsair DDR 4000 - 2x512mb.
In another post, I found a link to a post at Western Digital where WDC claims that the disk I have is the next generation of SATA and may not be compatible with the chipset in the MSI motherboard. They recommend to jumper two pins on the disk to help out. The only thing is that my WDC disk has been running OK since May and is the one that recently crashed. I bought a Seagate SATA disk to try to restore my system to, but whenever I hook up the Seagate, the system takes over an hour to boot up. Without the Seagate it takes a few minutes. I think that maybe the Seagate is also too new for this motherboard.
I don't know how the consumer is supposed to know if a disk is compatible with a motherboard. I bought a SATA disk to use in a SATA equipped motherboard. Apparently newer versions of SATA are not backwards compatible but there is no easy way to know this in advance or to find out if your disk will work.
