SATA and PATA issue

I currently have system set up running XP Pro on Neo-2LS motherboard and a Western Digital 80meg SATA hard drive. I want to add my old 80 meg IDE (PATA) harddrive.  However, I cannot get my regular IDE harddrive to be recognized in windows or in the BIOS.  My SATA drive still fine after I connected the second harddrive.  I have my Bios setting set to PATA and SATA in native mode.  I searched through the forums but have not found anything that worked.  Your suggestions on how to solve this would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

All that you need is one software utility ,for hard drive automated installation , visit the site of your hard disk maker , in order to download the software .
You will end up with one boot diskette, that it will boot your system and will guide you all the way..

    Hi
I have MSI 865PE Neo3-F mainboard and I have a few little problems with Neo.
    My first:
I have HDD Maxtor DiamondMax10 300GB,16MB cache,SATA.When I was installing Windows,(widows setup) it shows that HDD has only 131GB.BIOS shows 251GB.what does it mean? Not supported HDD or only 130GB for one partition?
    My second:
I want to connect also P-ATA HDD,but BIOS don´t see him.
What would be IDE settings in BIOS and also jumper settings on PATA HDD and DVD when I want use:
SATA as Primary Master (system disk)
    PATA as Secondary Master
    DVD-ATA IDE as Secondary Slave
    My last:
What I should installing when I want to use all advantages of SATA HDD and what would be BIOS settings?
PLEASE HELP IT IS URGENTLY,CAUSE I HAVE TO WORK TO MY SCHOOL
    ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
    Thank you

At the first thank you for your reply.
    Yes it works.
Sorry I didn´t post my OS.My OS is XP (with SP2,now).
    Configuration:
    P4 Prescott 540J 3.2GHz,FSB800MHz,HT (enabled)
    MSI 865PE Neo3-F
    2x APACER 512MB DDR400 (Dual channel,slot 1 and 3)
    ASUS FX5700 256MB
    Maxtor DiamondMax10 300GB,16MB cache,7200rpm
    DVD-RW Plextor 716AK
After installing Service Pack 2 windows shows that HDD has 300GB,but I created two partitions before (C:\ [30GB] and D:\ [100GB] in windows setup) and now (after install SP2 E:\ [170GB]) one partition in Windows.Problem how do I put together last two partitions (D:\ and E:\) to one partition?
so if I right understand after this settings in BIOS:
    Native Mode
ATA Configuration - PATA only (or SATA-only)
    SATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA channel selection - both
and what about another two options in this menu?what are the settings?(somtehing about 1st channel and so on)
    connections looks like that:
on  IDE ATA100 cable from IDE1 will be connect HDD ATA100 as Master and DVD as slave?
on SATA cable from SATA1 will be connect HDD SATA?
How system knows which one from two Masters HDD is System disk?from Boot menu?
Is some page on the web where can I find closer explain of IDE (SATA) settings for MB MSI?

  • SATA and PATA port Selection on P965 Neo - Advice please!

    Hello,
I am just waiting for my parts to arrive, including the P965 Neo. I was wondering about the JMicron controller and the ICH8 Intel SATA ports and how to best use them.
My setup will be one SATA 320gb HD and one PATA DVD writer.
My question is where best to connect these? I don't want or need NCQ or RAID, so can I connect the HD to one of the serial port of the ICH8 and just have the DVD drive connected to the JMicron?
Do I need to install the JMicron driver at all?
    Thanks for any advice.

    Thanks for the reply.
If I want to use only the IDE channel for my DVD drive (HDD will be on ICH8 SATA port), can I install the JMicron driver after I have installed Windows XP?
I don't have a floppy for this build, so I want to avoid having to 'F6' at install time.
    Thanks once again.

  • Can you have SATA and PATA drives at the same time?

Right now I have 2 PATA drives hooked up to the board. Is it possible to hook up a SATA drive that will be a non-boot drive for just storage purposes?

You can havepata disks + Sata, with sata as boot or not, you just need to update the Hard disk boot order in advanced bios settings.
    luck

  • SATA and PATA setups

I have the NEO2-PLS with a Seagate SATA drive, IBM ATA100 HDD and WD ATA66 HDD on IDE1, Samsung DVD-ROM and HP CD-RW on IDE2 installed.
Now what settings would I need so the SATA drive is the primary but the IDE1 AND IDE2 hardware is recognized in the BIOS?
From what I read in the FAQ and other threads is that you can have the SATA be the primary but only the IDE1 hardware be used as secondary.  If that is true then what about my IDE2 stuff?

Questions to Danny or Reily or other experts:
I have a similar situtation (875 neo-fis2r). I just bought a Seagate Barcuda (SATA)160GB. I used Drive Magic 7.0 to copy my older IBM 100 GB (IDE) drive partitions (including the primary) to this new drive. I then set the IDE drive in Slave mode but the XP Pro boot always starts from my old drive primary (C partition).
In BIOS, I setup ATA mode as Danny suggested but my "SATA keep alive" is "NO" and I can't change it. I connected the SATA drive to the Intel Serial-1 controller.
How do I change the SATA keep alive to YES and how do I switch Booting XP from the new drive primary partition (Seagte drive primary partition is an exact copy of the IBM drive primary partition).
    Thanks.

  • SATA or PATA hdd ??

    Hi,
I´m planning a hdd upgrade and are a bit unsure what to choose between sata and pata disks.
    Up until now I´ve preffered pata disks of several reasons but more and more of high performance hdd are running sata, so my question;
Will I loose any OC capability when running sata disks ?
Will I be able to run the sata disk at same FSB as my PATA ( at least 240-250fsb) without datacorruption, assuming I lock AGP/PCI to 66/33 ????
Is there any other issues involved when talking OC with sata disks on MSI 865pe boards ( No raid) .
    Thanks for comments and input.

But, Maesus, like Danny said that he only can go to around 230?
And if I'm not wrong, many users using SATA (1 or 2 which from ICH5) also reported can go only around 230. But this problem goes when they tried to use SATA 3 or 4 (which from 3rd party).
But my board is only standard "P", so my board only have SATA 1 and 2 (from ICH5).
Is it really safe to OC more than FSB 230 with SATA HDD? (as maybe my local store will not accept RMA for HDD only because it's limiting my OC   )
    Thanx.
nb: I think I really need new HDD, as mine is so slow on loading. My system is very fast when working only with RAM (app have loaded) + CPU, and become faster after overclocked... but when loading big application at first... fiuhh, I don't feel the speed at all...

  • Is Installing Optical Drive through SATA to PATA Adapter on K8MM-V Possible?

I bought this sata to pata interface with the JM20330 chip and it appears to be connected in the right way:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16822998008
I also bought a Pioneer 111D from newegg because I am having some issues with my Benq 1640.
I have an MSI K8MM-V motherboard which is based on Via K8M800-CE & VT8237R chipsets. My bios has sata enabled and I have its mode running in IDE mode rather than RAID mode. Can my setup handle optical devices on sata ports?
I was able to successfully flash the drive the drive's firmware with this setup.
The drive is recognized by Windows. It sees it as Pioneer DVR 111L SCSI CD-ROM Device.
I can not get it to burn media. It stops every few seconds and says something along the lines of I/O error. Is there anything I can post that can aid somebody in telling me what I am doing wrong or if there is something I can correct. Thank you.  I don't really understand why I can flash the drive, but it has so many problems writing to media.
I am wanting to keep this drive on Sata if I can help it because it runs in UDMA4 since I wish to keep my Benq 1640 on the IDE channel which runs in UDMA 2 mode.
I am at work right now, so can't really get more detailed specs.  I have posted this image on cdfreaks forum where I posed a similar question there since some people were attempting to use there drive this way by SATA connection.  I believe that my Bios is either 1.8 or 1.9.  I think there is a 1.A available.  My MSI live Update said my Bios is up to date, but that also points me to older files than the ones already installed on my system from the website.  I don't recall updating that in late June early July.
I couldn't find any info on the motherboard home page or through a forum search.
Thanks for any help that you can provide.

I have purchased a number of items, including drives, enclosures, and memory from Other World Computing (www.macsales.com) External hard disk enclosures are available include USB only, USB/SATA, USB/Firewire, and all 3, depending upon your needs.
In my opinion it is unlikely that a properly-functioning single hard drive designed for laptop use would exceed the available USB power capabilities of your MacBook when installed in an unpowered enclosure. I have powered external 3.5" drives (iomega and Seagate) for use with Time Machine, but I've had no problems running a single 2.5" laptop drive up to 500Gb in an unpowered USB external enclosure on either my mid 2007 MacBook 2,1 or my son's mid-2009 MacBook Pro unibody without any other unpowered USB devices installed.
Some vendors offer a 'bundle' containing an external enclosure, the proper Torx and Phillips screwdrivers, and a replacement hard drive of your choice.
Whether or not the 'bad' drive will mount depends on what is wrong with it. If it will not ever mount/boot while installed inside the MacBook, it's unlikely that it will work simply by transferring it to an external enclosure. There are advanced disk utility programs such as Tech Tool Pro that claim to help you diagnose and recover data from drives that do not mount. I have not used the program. MacUpdate (mupromo.com) currently includes TechToolPro in a spring bundle for about half the retail price of the program.

  • C309g (CD055A) no black and other issues..

Hey all..  Not sure which thing to post about first, so in random order, here goes....
I bought a used printer listed above in the subject..  It needed a new power supply, and ink, but seemed to be great.  I purchased the regular size cartridges except the black which they had in XL size.  I printed a total of 3 test pages (set up on three computers), I printed one 8x11 photo via bluetooth from my phone, and my wife printed 2 8x11 photo's from her PC.  All 3 8x11's were on regular paper.  Oh, and we printed one of the dots built-in pages..  So if you're counting (and I KNOW I am), that is a total of 7 pages.  Additionally there may have been one demo page (possibly a total of 8 pages, then!), can't remember if I did that demo page on the previous owners ink or if I did one on the new ink I bought (previous ink was old/empty).  Oh, and technically there was an alignment page, so final total 9 pages.  After those nine pages, my magenta and yellow ink were both down to around 65-75 percent.  It sat a week without use (literally, 7 days).  Today I went to print some regular text (black only) and it shot out at me blank pages.  I tried a few more times, and nothing but blank pages.  Tired of running back and forth, I printed a built-in "school paper" page or wide ruled paper (heh, how cool in a pinch is THAT feature!).  It printed perfectly - Course it's blue and magenta, no black..
So it's been awhile since I used inkjet, but I quickly rememberd the handy utility to clear/clean printheads.  Ran that.  It failed, assumedly for missing black (it had the gray'ish photo black, but not 'black' anywhere on the sheet.  After the cleaning failed, I removed the black, and all the colors.  Seems to be black in there (as should be!) I dabbed the bottom with a paper towel gently, it turned black...  So I put it in, and it whirred away doing it's thing to re-align, and then it told me the shocking news that my printer was low on ink, and showed all levels to be well, I suppose about 10-15 percent remaining (think SMALL skinny lines).  Now I know this is an estimate, but I'm concerned from the get-go that after only 9 pages it was down to 65%!!
Before I found the forums, I found a site that recommended removing the ink cartridges, and removing the print head itself and soaking the bottom portion (up to the wire meshes, slightly covering them, but not the entire thing) for awhile in IPA (isopropal alcohol) and then dipping them in fresh a fresh batch to 'rinse' then gently hitting them with compressed air via air compressor (or canned air, I suppose, have an air compressor) to remove any debris and get the remaining alcohol off/out.  I then let it sit several hours to 'dry', which - it was probably ready immediately given the properties of IPA, but didn't want to chance it.. Re-inserted it and the ink, and.....  SAME THING.
All the ink is official HP ink (since I'm sure that q is coming), was purchased from a big box retailer who ya all know and love or hate (no need to name drop)..  I'm wondering if...
    1.  My ink, though coming out onto the paper towels could be bad/defective.  Given the really fast drop in the levels of ink, and the issue with black not seeming to print, seems possible?
    2.  Should I try the boiling the print head - err not boiling it, but sticking it in recentyl boiled water, and give that a try?  The guide that was posted here somewhere showed doing that, with IPA added to the water as an option.  Is it possible the IPA didn't break up whatever gunk might be blocking the black, that boiled water might break up?  Does that make sense, or would the IPA have broken it down?
How do these print heads work exactly, or is that the big company secret?  I mean, is there a tube that goes for the inlet of black to the gold area underneath, cuz it's not directly under the gold like old fashioned cartridges used to be..  Is there any way to open up or access that area like, under the metal screens to get in there with a pipecleaner or something maybe, or something?
And, for bonus points (lol) Why does HP assign two names to their printers??  IE C309g (CD055A),  If my printer is the C309g, why is it ALSO the CD055A??  SO confusing and un-necessary..
Thanks for your time and patience

I've had a similar problem with black not printing, though my printer is a B8550. I bought new and have used it fairly lightly I'd say, but after only a couple of years it suddenly stopped printing the photo black (it has separate cartridges for black for photos and black for text, etc.).
It prints on regular printer paper just fine using the other black--but not a drop prints of the Photo Black (yes, it's full). Since I've cleaned the print head, and even bought a new one, and a diagnostic print shows absolutely no trace of the photo black, I'm fairly sure the printer itself is at fault. It's sold as a 'Photosmart' printer, meaning it's intended to use to print photos--large format too--so without photo black it is a huge brick as far as I'm concerned.
I've begun to notice from these forum posts that there is an issue with HP and black ink, or at least whatever controls black for photo papers in their inkjet printers. If I'm not mistaken both yours and mine use the 564 cartridges, so maybe that suggests a common factor in such printers that is the culprit. I suspect HP knows there is a problem, either with the hardware or firmware, and I wish they would do right by us.

  • P35 Neo2 BIOS Settings to run Dual Boot SATA and IDE HD's

    Hi,
I was having intermittent problems with a Gigeabyte so upgraded M/B.
I have an IDE "caddy" with 2 Dual boot HD's (Linux Grub booting XP on sda1 and Fedora9 on sda2), and had no problems with either HD's on old M/B.
The old M/B also had  SATA sockets which I installed a 250GB drive as my main setup.  Dual boot again with same setup.  I set the SATA to "auto" and it detected and ran when no IDE caddy was inserted.
Everything ran OK but I had very intermittent CRC failures that I could not isolate, so I upgrade 2 days ago.
Without inserting any IDE drives I can boot the SATA drive OK into Linux OK  (it also detects an ext3 partition on a seperate /backup partition so the IDE interface works).
If I now try and boot the XP on my SATA drive,  I get the dreaded blue screen.
I assume this is due to me having XP installed without the AHCI support as detailed in other (long) thread showing how to overcome this problem!?
I would also like to know if and I can just boot from my IDE drive (with no SATA's connected),   because even though it seems to detect the PATA HD OK,  I cannot get it to boot from either of them!  I know these HD's have not changed as I have checked both of them on the SATA OS and both Logical volumes are still there and the relevant boot flags are both set.
Even though I have a bit of a complex setup,  this may well be a very simple case of BIOS settings (sorry).
    FYI:
I have a A7345 IMS V1.8 012408 BIOS and my two IDE drives are both dual boot with XP on the first partition.
Both Linux partitions are formatted using Logical Volume Management  (LVM).
    Thanks for your time
Any help/pointers would be appreciated as I am not absolutely sure that the M/B is functional or not.

Thanks for the info,  I am now a bit clearer as to what is happening!
I removed known good IDE HD from caddie and put it directly on the IDE cable (after removing the old non LVM linux IDE disk that was on it).
The newly connected HD was initialized OK and I can see both SAT and IDE disks listed with F11.
On trying to boot from the IDE,  it starts up and decompresses the image,  BUT cannot seem to find the LVM Volume group 03 (which is where my /boot partition is located).
It then gives in and after a while,  boots back to the SATA OK (where the bootloader is also inside the LVM so I can't see why the LVM IDE disk is a problem but the LVM SATA boots OK).
I do remember (late last night) trying with just IDE drive and of course it just hung because it did not have any alternative to boot!
    Any other observations/suggestions?
Apologies its late here and I will not be back for a few hours!
    Regards

  • Erratic Mouse and Keyboard issues...with weird console log...

    Hello All,
I recently installed Snow Leopard on my 2x2.8 Quad Core Mac Pro following a boot drive melt down. Apple replaced the drive via Apple Care and I re-installed all my apps. The only additional item of note is I have Lycom SATA four port card that required a driver update.
Since setting up this machine with the new OS I am having massive issues with keyboard lag, erratic mouse movement and intermittent freezing.
I've run tech tools deluxe and everything passes with that app. I cant find the original install disks so running AHT on this machine isn't going to happen.
I've tried with and without the driver and the issue seems to still be there.
On a whim I opened console and I am seeing this message hundreds and hundreds of times over...

If not, I still think you have a HW issue.  It is relatively consistant, too.  Like something is breaking down - physically.  Not a disk - BIOS... notherboard... something that holds everything together.

We do not live it in that world, at least not yet.

  • Shopping for new HD: Difference between SATA and SATA II? / Compatibility?

I'm looking for a new HD to replace the original, now failing Maxtor drive in my G5 tower (1.8 Ghz dual processor, purchased in Aug. 2004), and have just about settled on the Western Digital Caviar SE16 series. It seems there are two types -- SATA and SATA II -- and I'm not sure about how to make a decision on which particular WD model to buy.
Will either type work in my machine? Or would the SATA II have potential compatibility problems? I read somewhere in these forums that someone with a G5 had bought an SATA II drive, and it wouldn't run with his system. (He said he had to reset some jumper switches to reduce the transfer rate of the drive [??], but now I'm told elsewhere that SATA drives don't have jumper switches.)
Kinda confusing trying to choose the right drive, so any help is appreciated.
Also, am wondering if there are any connectivity parts (power cable, SATA cable, screws, etc.) in particular that wouldn't come supplied with the drive. (I'll be ordering a retail drive, not OEM or refurb, so hoping it might come with everything I need.)
    TIA,
    Steve

    Tom,
Thanks for the info. I don't see the 250GB w/ 16MB cache drive that I was looking for, but OWC has a very good price on the 500 GB drive. A few questions for clarification:
    - Re: +"The later model SATA II drives often have a jumper to limit transfer rates to 150."+ -- Any tips on finding out if these jumper switches are present in a particular drive? OWC doesn't specify this, and this info seems to be generally hard to find.
    - Re: +"...some are SATA I/II which are designed to work on both types."+ -- Same problem here... I'm not finding any info in the various drives' specs on this. To make this easier on myself, I'd rather get a drive that I don't have to mess with jumper switches, or at least be able to determine if a particular drive will present SATA I / II issues. Any additional info you (or others) can provide may be helpful.
    - Will upgrading to a drive with 16MB cache give me an improvement in performance? And are there any compatibility issues with my particular G5? (I'm assuming a 16MB cache drive will work fine with my machine, and based on my reading they do provide a speed boost.)
    Thanks for any info...
    Steve

  • SATA and HD LED

Before I installed my SATA drive, my hard drive LED worked just fine with my PATA drive.  Ever since I installed the SATA drive, the hard drive LED no longer works.  Is this typical that it wouldn't work with the SATA and only with PATA drives?
I've check to make sure the connection didn't come lose and the connection is just fine.
    Thanks

That used to be the case with my K7N2 Delta-ILSR but since switching to the K7N2 Delta2 Platinum the hard drive LED works fine with SATA.

  • MSI KT6 Delta LSR SATA to PATA High CPU Usage Problem

Well recently I've switch to my one of my other motherboards on my network to a MSI KT6 Delta LSR, it was working fine after a reformat, but I notice a few problems and that is 100% cpu usage for SATA to PATA, and vice versa, which seems really crazy. Then my network card performance is ISDN speed sluggish, and I tested my line to be working 100% with another mobo. But when I put another NIC on the same mobo it suffers the same speed problems.
Any suggestions? The rig is specs:

    LG 16X DVD-ROM

Shouldn't say what I don't know about SATA, but since I found below, I need ask if VIA 4in1 drivers are installed, preferably while in SafeMode I say:
    http://www.google.se/search?q=cache:X6ewgPiIHYcJ:www.qdi.nl/cgi-bin/bbs/YaBB.pl%3Fboard%3DP4I865%3Baction%3Ddisplay%3Bnum%3D1074174096+sata+to+pata+cpu+usage&hl=sv
I recently installed 160g Seagate barracuda 7200.7 drive on SATA port. (I enabled the Bios using Auto) I have a P4I865pea-6al mother board, with two PATA drives . When copying files between the PATA drives on ide ports, to or from, the SATA drive, I notice the CPU usage goes up to 100%, but when copying files from one ide drive (the PATA drives) to another the CPU usage is very low.
Is there a bios setting that will allow me to copy files from the SATA drive to the Pata drives using a small amount of CPU power, found when just copying between the Primary and Secondary IDE drives? I am using Adobe premiere pro, which uses a lot of CPU power, and the high CPU usage of the SATA drive crashes this program? Any help would be appreciated
