Sata cable position for new drive

Hello,
I will be installing a new drive in my G3 (I am aware this is a G4 forum however this should be relevent to G4's too) . It is a SATA drive and I am not sure where to position the SATA cable. I know how to connect the ends however the cable I am ordering will either be 12 inches or 18 inches and it will have a 90 degree bend on the drive connector which I have heard is a convenient feature to connect to the drive. How do I bundle the excess SATA cable length? Should I zap-strap it with plastic zap straps and suspend it above the drive somehow or is it OK to just leave the SATA cable sitting on top of the drive? I am concerned about the heat. The drive will probably be a Hitachi T7K250 250 GIG SATA drive.
Thanks,
Mike

Hello Allan,
Thanks for your comments. I will be buying a FirmTek SeriTek/1S2 SATA controller card ($69.95)
It has 2 Internal SATA Ports. Available at:
http://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-1s2/
Seems like an excellent method to be able to use SATA as well as address one of the limitations of the g3 which is the fact a g3 can't recognize large hard drives. Also, this SeriTek/1S2 card works in both OS 9 and OS X. Its well known for this versatile feature of being able to work on both OS 9 and OS X.
Looking forward to installing it.Just concerned about how to bundle the cable and how best to fit it in. I am also not sure if I should position my new second big SATA drive (Hitachi T7K250) 250 GIG next to the original 12 GIG or space it away a bit in the next drive bay over.
There are lower drive bays for hard drives: back: where the original 12 GIG is nearest the fan. Middle and front (farthest from the fan). I will have to choose either the middle position or the front. Not sure which is best or if it even matters.
Hope everyone is enjoying a nice weekend!
Thank you Allan,
Mike

  • 3rd Party SATA raid cards for internal drives?

    All --
Apart from the discussion as to if RAID actually benefits a home desktop system, I am wondering if anyone has the lowdown on using 3rd party SATA raid cards to support the INTERNAL hard drives on the Mac Pro series?
My Mac Pro is still slated to be built at Apple and for now I have the minimum memory and HD spec being requested at Apple, with the plan to upgrade the memory and drives from OWC or another vendor.
I've toyed with the idea of utilizing Disk Utility's software RAID features (e.g. RAID 0 for scratch disks, RAID 1 for boot, RAID 0+1 for all else.) I've also toyed with the notion of searching for a hardware raid solution which would allow me to transfer the internal SATA cable runs from the motherboard to a host adapter card for an internal multi-channel experience (with options to create and break mirrors to external devices for backup purposes.)
    So....
Has anyone experience or utilized 3rd party hardware raid controllers which can connect to the internal HD bays? Are there limitations to this (ie, does the boot drive HAVE to reside off the internal motherboard controllers, or can an internal hardware controller successfully boot the system) of which ought be noted?
Finally, in the event that a host adapter card cannot drive the interna bays, can anyone give feedback to hardware SATA cards to power external drive bays with support for Disk Utility (to allow RAID1 pairings of internal drives to external snapshot-backup drives)?
    Thanks for your time,

I am wondering if anyone has the lowdown on using 3rd party SATA raid cards to support the INTERNAL hard drives on the Mac Pro series?
There are many 3rd party controllers that support the internal HDs if an internal iPass connector is used. The problem is that some are bootable but most are not.
The Areca ARC-1680ix-12 and the HighPoint RocketRAID 4320 are bootable. However, the system cannot be installed via the Apple DVD. Instead the user needs to clone a boot drive with the proper drivers to the boot volume on the controller and then boot from the 3rd party controller.
The other issue I found is that these controllers do not support Boot Camp. If Boot Camp is desired, my recommendation would be to leave the internal HDs on the Mac Pro internal bus intact and use the 3rd party controller for external storage. This method provides four internal bays that are bootable, support Boot Camp and can be used for system backups. I use the 3rd party controller for external storage for large RAID sets and hot swapping hard disks.
With the internal bays intact and external hot swap RAID storage available the user can support Boot Camp, multiple system volumes and large external RAID sets. From my experience using a 3rd party controller with the internal HD bays always has some limitations. The user usually does not realize it unit later when Boot Camp does not work or the computer fails on a system upgrade or the controller does not work at all with a new version of Mac OS X.
Staying with the standard internal Mac Pro bay configuration will be the best configuration to avoid compatibility issues with future versions of Mac OS X. It is rumored that the new Snow Leopard may require 64-bit drivers. If that is the case, I would expect most if not all existing 3rd party controller drivers to fail. Some drivers will be upgraded after a few months while others may not. Having the internal Mac Pro SATA controller intact should at least allow the Mac Pro to boot if my guess about compatibility issues is correct.
can anyone give feedback to hardware SATA cards to power external drive bays with support for Disk Utility (to allow RAID1 pairings of internal drives to external snapshot-backup drives)?
There are a large number of external controllers that work with Disk Utility. Here are some of my favorites.

  • Xpower Sata III Setup for Boot drive

Hi again, I need help setting up my sata drive now...So far I have set sata 6gbs controller mode to AHCI.
Verfied the Marvell bios recognized my drive correctly and installed windows. Was I supposed to change anything
in the marvell bios(Virtual Disk? Assuming that is for 2 drives for raid)? Now I need to install the drivers for them. Should I install any other drivers first (Chipset, Lan, etc)? Also should I download them from msi or marvell? One thing in the manaual threw me off "Important: Only when you set the "AHCI" mode in the integrated Perpheral menu of mainboard bios setup, you have to install the raid drivers for the sata devices"? What exactly do they mean? Then it goes on to show how to install the drivers for bootable raid array. I kinda get the impression I was supposed to install the drivers via a disk as I was installing windows? Do I need to start over?

well my Marvell controller recognizes my drives, it will let me install windows on them.  but i have no option at in the msi bios that would allow me to select on of these disks for a boot drive.  my only bootable options are on the sata ii ports.  i have tried my ocz sold 3 ssd, my 10k velociraptor, and a 2tb seagte data drive.  no option to boot from them.  and when i boot from my dvd drive to install windows, when i come to the prompt to customize my install, windows tells me that i can not install windows on this drive because the controller is disabled please go into your bios to enable the controller to properly boot and install windows.
this is obviously and issue with the motherboard itself.  at no point and time have i ever had the option to boot from the sata iii controller.  ive owned this mobo for just under a year.

  • Audio Cable Requirements for New Apple TV

I'm about to order a new Apple TV. The specs are a little unclear on the audio side, as it says it has an optical audio output. However, does the HDMI port do audio out as well, or do I NEED an optical audio cable in addition to HDMI when my TV supports HDMI? Thanks for the help.

HDMI will carry audio. No need for a separate optical cable unless you want to run it to another device such as a receiver/amp.

  • SATA-3 Card for Hard Drives

     Slots
    • 3 PCI Express gen2 x16 slots
    - two dark Blue PCIE x16 slots (PCI_E2 &PCI_E4) support up to PCIE x16 speed, one Blue PCIE x16 slot(PCI_ E5) supports up to PCIE x4 speed
    - supports ATI® Crossfire™
    • 2 PCI Express gen1 x1 slots
    • 2 PCI slot, support 3.3V/ 5V PCI bus Interface
My original motherboard was replaced with a MSI X58 Pro-E.  This motherboard does not support SATA-3 as are my hard drives.
Is there a SATA-3 card that would work in one of the above slots at the SATA-3 6GB/sec?

Not sure how well they work. With spinner HDD's, I don't believe there is much difference between SATA II and SATA III performance.
Some SATA III HDD's have a place for a jumper on the back that allows them to run without any problems on SATA II ports and controllers.

  • Portege M700 - SATA speed/standdard for new SSD

    Hello,
I would like to by SSD disk for my Toshiba Portg M700-116.
Which SATA dish speed can I buy?
    SATA 1.0 (SATA 1.5 Gb/s)
    SATA 2.0 (SATA 3 Gb/s)
    SATA 3.0 (SATA 6 Gb/s)
    Thank you
    Jan

    Hi
Im not quite sure about the SATA specification but I think the Portege M700 supports an SATA II HDD controller.
However, you can install some hardware diagnostic tools like SANDRA Sisoft to get detailed controller specifications.
But SATA is backward compatible and this means that even if you would use an SATA III SSD drive, the SSD would be recognized but speed would be limited to SATA II performance.

  • [Simple question] MSI GT780DX 406US supports SATA III? (for new OCZ ssd)

     Question:
I have read the specs and could not find anything who says is compatible with SATA 3.
I want to buy this SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227727
But im not spending this much without sure it will work properly.
     Can any1 gimme a light?
ps: whats the better SSD i can buy for 280$?
    thank you!!

Unfortunately i have bad news i asked before msi and they said that didn't know about it.and i got some information about chipset from here
    http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/mainstream-chipsets/mobile-chipset-hm67.html?wapkw=hm67
Serial ATA (SATA) 6 Gb/s and 3 Gb/s:High-speed storage interface supporting up to 6 Gb/s transfer rate for improved data access. Provides up to six SATA ports with up to two ports supporting 6 Gb/s transfer rates.
As you see unfortunately the two port is for USB 3.0 because on data sheet there is no info about usb 3.0 so that means two sata 3 ports are for usb 3.0
that is bad :( i didn't try that but it seems bad...:(

  • Inspiron One2310 how to replace a possibly deffective sata cable on hard drive

    Hello
One month ago i had hard drives problems
especially on an ubuntu/linux partition. Forums said i could have sata cable problem or hard drive problems. Hard drive testing showed an excessive temperature wile testing (approx 70oC). So i've changed the hard drive. Faster, bigger, but ... here again system continues t freeze
Now i would like to change the sata cable but:
    - what reference should i buy and where ?
    - on my hard drive, there are 2 cables with flat connectors. But where should they be connected to motherboard ?
    - any advice to remove the old cable and replace with the new one ?
I've read plenty other topic showing it should be possible to replace the cable but i don't thins this should be a good idea to mis connect a cable.
    Thank you in advance.

If you already replaced the hard drive you should know where the cables are and where they go. One is the SATA power cable that goes directly to the power supply and the other is the SATA data cable that goes to the motherboard.
So disconnect the data cable from the HDD and from the motherboard and buy the same length cable at any PC shop or web site. SATA data cables are standard and nothing unique. Just remember where the motherboard connector is.
Freezes can be caused by lots of different things and I'd investigate those before replacing the data cable.
Have you run the diagnostics on the RAM, which is a frequent cause of freezes? Have you reseated the RAM modules in their slots? Do you have the latest drivers, eg video driver, for your hardware?
Are there any updates to your apps and software?
Do the freezes happen when you're running a specific app? Since this seems to happen on the Linux partition is something not fully compatible with Linux..?

  • Mac freezes after 10 minutes, hard drive and sata cable replaced

MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro 15" Unibody 2.53 GHz Mid 2009) froze about a month ago. Computer would get slow and then just stop responding. Wouldn't even respond to force quit commands. Press and hold power button only way to free it up.
Directory Scan, Volume Structure failed. Bad Blocks.
Purchased new hard drive (Western Digital Blue 320 GB Mobile Hard Drive: 2.5 Inch, 5400 RPM, SATA II, 8 MB Cache) and replaced. Try restore from time machine, fails - freezes up with about 20 minutes remaining to finish.
Got a USB SATA cable (external) and new SATA cable (internal) for computer.
The drive and computer work fine when connected via external USB. Ran Apple Harware Test (ok), reset NVRAM, all software is up to date.
I replaced SATA cable in computer and tried drive internal - same problems. Still freezes after working for just a short while.
So to sum it up, new drive works via external USB but not when installed internally.
Any ideas what it could be? Did I buy the wrong drive? Do I have two bad SATA cables? Something else entirely?
    Thanks! Mike

On you picture going from right to left. the cables are/WIFI/Optical Drive/Hard Drive/ Battery. What you have circled is the cable for the Hard Drive. Sometimes you can have a little extra tape on the connector. I would not use it as a grab point to remove an reseat the cable. You would want to carefully pull the cable loose and make sure there is no separation in it and then reseat it. I cannot see your hard drive in the picture,so I do not know if you have the sata or ssd drive. If it is the sata drive ,do you hear any light clicking noise when you startup? This would mean that you have possible drive damage. If you have a ssd drive (solid state drive) it is not possible  to damage the drive by jarring it as there are no moving parts. Make sure all connection cables are fully seated. Include reseating of memory. If in recovery/utilities/disk utilities/ your startup volume does not show, that is problematic. There is single user and SMC reset. after that I do not know what to advise.https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295   https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203176

  • SATA cable or motherboard failure?

    Hey community,
my old macbook pro 13inch, 2010 mid, 2.4ghz, 250Gb HDD broke down. Tried many different solutions to fix it, but unfortunately there was no other choice then to buy new HDD. So bought the new one, installed, changed it and installed iOS, after using it for couple hours it started to got laggy and had to force shut. After tried to turn it on, there was no HD visible, not even in the recovery mode, tried to plug it in, back and forwards many times, but still gave no results. I can hear it spinning, but it won't recognize.
Is it the sata cable that has to be changed or it is the failure of the motherboard?
    Thanks for answers!

Do you have the original DVD that shipped with the computer? If so you can try booting with it. If the computer boots with the DVD it would point to the cable being damaged or loose from the logic board. If you’ve been using TimeMachine with an external hard drive (not a TimeCapsule) and if the TimeMachine drive was plugged into the computer when you upgraded to Mavericks it should have its own recovery partition so you can try restarting the computer with the TM drive connected. This could also help indicate whether it is the logic board or SATA cable. For future reference, this is also one of the reasons I like using a clone backup as a secondary backup drive because I can always boot up with it if the internal drive isn’t functional.

  • Which SATA cables do I need?

Recently I tried installing a 2.5" SSD in a 3.5" enclosure (Icy Dock) in one of the internal drive bays in my Mac Pro. The enclosure was defective, apparently, because the SATA ports on the enclosure didn't quite line up with the internal SATA ports in the MP drive bay. Unfortunately, I pushed a little too hard to get it in and I ended up bending the metal brackets that the black plastic SATA port is screwed on to in the Mac Pro.
The result is that the SATA port is now bend down at about a 10% angle, which is enough to prevent me from sliding a hard drive in and connecting it. I've tried to bend it back to the normal angle, but I wasn't successful.
I'd hate to lose the use of that bay, so I was thinking I could just get a SATA cable to connect the drive to the drive bay. I guess I'd have to have both the SATA to SATA connector and the SATA to SATA power cable. Unfortunately, I can't find a cable like that. Any ideas?

    Something like this:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/22-Pin-SATA-Male-Female-Extension-Cable-/290394275128
    - or shorter, if you can find it?
Not sure where/how you're going to mount the drive though! I suppose, if you're only trying to fit a 2.5" drive in a 3.5" bay, it'll fit, and you can coil up the "unused" extension cable round it.

i was surprised to see white sata cables with my new p67a-gd65!  even moreso because my case is white and it all looks great together..
my question is..  where and how can i get more of these white sata cables?  I havent seen anyone else sell them, would msi be willing to sell these, or are they from another manufacturer?

  • My new HDD for Macbook pro 13" unibody is not recognized and I am using a new SATA cable

    Hey everyone,
I have a particular problem that I cannot seem to find an answer to.  My new 500gb internal drive for my Macbook Pro 13" unibody is not recognized.  The old HDD broke on me so I bought a new one but my macbook pro would not recognize it.  To troubleshoot that issue I purchased the SATA cable and replaced the old with the new.  The new HDD still will not show up in disk utility.
Please let me know what you think I may have missed or should do.
    Thank you

    jc1388,
Bring it to an Apple store Genius bar (make an appointment, so you don,t have to wait around forever) they will diagnose it for free and tell you your options/pricing. They have more extensive testing tools, maybe your logic board is failing/failed.
    best of luck
