SATA Confirmation Question

I am currently running an Solaris 10 x86 Beta 6 on an ASUS A7V600-X mainboard. This mainboard supports SATA of which I have two 160gig drives installed. Is my understanding correct that these drives are not supported?? Solaris 10 recognizes that their is a raid controller but did not list the disks when I installed the OS on the IDE (have 4 drives, 2 SATA and 2 IDE). Any thoughts comments or pointers on if there is anything I can do to access them??
Thanks
- Tim

After many attempts I have been able to load Sol 10 on asus A8V-E Deluxe but since there are no drivers for the Yukon 88E8053 GB LAN or my All-In-Wonder x600 ATI PCIx adapter - that fact that you can load up Solaris 10 doesn't much matter.
This VIA chipset is just not in the hunt when it comes to Solaris, neither Asus nor VIA seem interested in the HCL for Sol 10.
Hats off to SysKonnect for at least trying to provide drivers, for this type of MB under Unix - Sol 10 will load skge for this MB (under 32b kernel)- but won't attach it.

  • MSI Neo-FIS2R build questions! & SATA RAID questions!

This is going to sound like a stupid question. And I'm not even sure that I know what I am asking.
I've built two computers so far. One with an MSI K7N2G-L and another with an MSI K7N2G-ILSR. Both nForce2 motherboards with AMD processors.
Here's what I'm getting at... I'm planning on building a new machine with either the Abit IC7-G or the MSI Neo-FIS2R (both 875P boards obviously).
Now, when I built the two nForce2 boards it was really easy. I put all of the components together, turned on the machine, the bios auto enabled settings, I put the windows xp pro cd in the cd drive and formatted the hard drive for NTFS, I then installed the OS and booted the system! Then I intstalled the drivers fromt the MSI CD. Ran Live BIOS and flashed to the most current motherboard BIOS. SIMPLE! Everything worked fine.
Here's my question. For the 875P system will everything pretty much happen the same way? Or do I need to do additional things? One of my main concerns (especially if I go with the Abit IC7-G over the MSI) is flashing the bios. Do I need a floppy drive or something? I've never flashed a BIOS outside of the Live BIOS utility. I don't want to put a floppy drive in my system! What are my options here?
Not that I want to do it, but if I needed to (say with the Abit board) HOW DO I FLASH THE BIOS WITHOUT USING THE LIVE BIOS UTILTY?
Bottom line is, I'm building this system for someone else and I want it all to be a painless experience (especially if they are looking over my shoulder).
One final question. This may sound even more stupid than the first question. I'm purchasing SATA drives ONLY. I'm not purchasing any IDE drives. So, here's my question...Can I boot from a SATA drive? What if it's in RAID 0? From the posts in the forums it appears that the SATA and RAID on these 875P motherboards either doesn't work or isn't very reliable (may potentially lose data). IS THIS AT ALL TRUE?! I'm stupid when it comes to RAID and SATA. Any help in this department would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    3. If I install two SATA drives and set up a RAID
(either 0 or 1) which drive does the OS go on?
I have never built a raid array (as yet) and have never owned a SATA disk (as yet), but from what I have read...
RAID is a method of connecting several disks together so they perform as a single disk.  That means, in response to your points above:
    1) If you install only one drive (SATA or not), it will not be set up as RAID.
    2) If you install two SATA drives, you have the option of using them as two individual drives OR setting them up in a RAID 0 or 1 configuration.
    3) Ok, RAID 0 is known as "striping" - this method makes two disks look like one big disk, that works twice as fast as the individual drives.  Every time the PC writes data to the drive, it sends the first bit of data to drive 1, the second to drive 2, then drive 1 again etc etc.  This speeds up the disk read/write time, as the two disks can both work simultaneously.  To the OS though, the two drives appear as one.  The OS will be spread across both disks - it needs both of them connected to run, take either disk out and you'll be left with half an OS (that obviously won't work)
With RAID 1 (known as "mirroring"), you still use two disks.  You will only have a useable capacity of the smallest disk however (using two 40gb drives only gives you a total of 40gb of space. with RAID 0, two 40gb disks will make one big one - nearly 80gb large {I think the RAID system itself uses a bit of space}).  The advantage with mirroring, is the second disk holds an exact copy of the first.  If one disk goes bang, you have a duplicate copy on the second - so, to answer your point above, the OS will reside on both disks.
To summarize, RAID 0 is good for increasing speed; RAID 1 is good for increasing protection of your data as you have two copies incase a drive gives up.  To get the best of both worlds you need RAID 0+1 (this method needs 4 disks though, 2 striped - then 2 mirroring the striped).
There is a lot to RAID - just search the net for some manuals if you're interested, hope this gives you an idea though (providing I've got it right!)

  • Confirmation question - advice needed

Hi would just like some confirmation before i buy an airport express and can't seem to find this question directly answered.
Ok i have a cable modem that runs into the WAN port of a linksys router - which then connects up two pc's using standard RJ45 connections to the routers LAN ports. The pc's are static (immobile) and happy with the RJ45 connections
I also have a powerbook and have to connect an RJ45 from the router to use the Internet etc, but i want to be able to move around with the laptop. All pretty straightforward so far.
What i want to know is if I can take the RJ45 from teh router that was going to my mac and plug it into an airport express and then connect from the mac using wireless to the airport which is linked to the router?
I dont want the airport to do any routing or anything as there will only be one mac connecting via wireless and the Linksys router is handing out static IP address;s to the 3 machines on the network.
I just want it to pass the signal from my static - IP addressed mac to the main router without interfering - the Linksys Router is configured to portforward to the static IP address on the Mac so all the airport would do is bridge the wireless gap from router to my mac.
I assume i can do this but would just like to confirm. Please let me know if this is not the case. Thx

To elaborate on David's reply, you can turn off the router that's built into the Express (by turning off "Distribute IP addresses" using Airport Admin Utility) so that the unit acts as a simple Ethernet-to-wireless bridge. In fact, I have an Express doing exactly that, connected to a wired D-Link router. In addition, I have a second Express extending the range of the first and providing AirTunes streaming to my stereo.

  • SATA HDD question

    Hi ppl
    Quick question.
When I built my PC  I used a HDD with a normal P-ATA connection with the IDE cable.
I am building a PC for my friend and was wondering if I should get a SATA drive.
R they rly that much faster or is it just a gimick?
Also when u install one for the first time and boot up is the SATA drive automatically recognised like a  normal P-ATA drive.
Sorry new to this. Thanks for your help
    SAspaz

    Hey again
Umm alright I dont rly mind if I get either of the drive now. Just a quick question. When I built my rig I just attached the P-ATA HDD using a normal IDE cable and then when I booted I just installed windows xp via CD etc and it just detected my IDE HDD was there.
Now if I built the new PC with a SATA drive and I connect the SATA port and the power to the drive and boot up the PC. Will it automatically recognise the HDD and I can install windows normally or wot. Is there anything I would have to do differently for SATA compared the PATA
Cheers guys. Noob wen it comes to the SATA drives.

  • Neo2; SATA thoughts/questions

    Hello you all,
    Ive been thinking about upgrading my fileserver (see signature) to an Athlon64 3500+ running on a MSI K8N Neo2 (got one on with this machine, love the board). As im going to have a total of five SATA HD's, Im going to need a PCI SATA controller card to satisfy my needs. Now to my thoughts/questions;
The total amount of drives will be 2 IDE HDs, 5 SATA HD's, 1 DVD and 1 CD-RW. Anything that I should think about other than a good PSU? (I can use two PSU's if needed, im moving from the ThermalTake Xaser III to a Coolermaster Stacker) So my question is, if there is any known problems with PCI SATA cards, if so any certain cards? Any recommendations / warnings? Any thoughts, ideas, comments welcome.

try looking into your bios settings that all the SATA are enabled and that the DMA is enabled as well this could help your windows to boot. and if you are running a fileserver why not install windows 2003 server or a 2000 server. you'll have more options and a better controlle over a software raid controller between more devices. (a hardware raid dontroller is better and is more stable.) if i was you i would use an raid 5 controller (but i would use an hardware controller) beware it is possible that you have to install the raidcontroller in one of the first stages in the windows install. by pressing F6 (it apears in the lower left corner when you are starting the setup.)
if you have ferther problems post it here everyone will thry to help

  • K8N Neo Platinum nf3 250Gb SATA RAID question?

Hi all I'm ready to make the move to an AMD A64 setup from my currnet P4.
You all know what a tough job it is to find the right motherboard for an A64
After much research I think the K8N Neo Platinum is the board for me, but there's one question I can't find an answer too. So I'm turning to this forum. Thanks much for any help.
I currently run a dual RAID"0" setup. Two WD360 Raptors as boot array off the Si3114 on-board controller and two WD740 Raptors as a game \ power apps storage array off the ICH5R southbridge.
My question is; Is it possible to run this drive setup off the K8N Neo Platinum's 4 SATA controllers? Two seperate RAID"0" arrays with one bootable.
    thank you-Mike

I decided to go with a S939 instead....I know me...and I'll want one as soon as I got the S754 up & running
I ordered a K8T NEO2-FIR...Its got the on-board Promise SATA RAID controller + on chip VIA RAID...so it should suit my drive needs perfectly

  • NEO Platinum (754 nForce3) SATA RAID Question

Because my ASUS Mainboard died yesterday, i am planing to buy the NEO Platinum for 754 socket. As i can see in manual, there is option in BIOS to disable or enable RAID function for each SATA port. There are 2x2 separate SATA ports, but only one SATA Controller.
I have 3 SATA Harddisk - 2 are in RAID0 Stripeset, and one drive as normal, standalone drive. My question:
Is it posible to connect the 2 RAID0 drives on SATA ports 3 and 4 and use them as RAID0 Stripeset, but at the same time to connect the 3rd standalone drive on port 1 or 2 in normal mode, also NO RAID use?
Theoraticaly, ase in manual - it should be posible (because you can switch the RAID function on or off for each SATA port, but on the other side - phisicaly - its only ONE SATA controller on board.
I need fast reply, so i can order the board in webshop. Thanx.

Thanx people, but now i habe another question. On my ASUS board i have connected 2 RAID drives on Silicon Image RAID controller - but the NEO Platinum have nVidia RAID controller.
Can i migrate with the RAID drives to another RAID controller without loose of data? I mean, i know that i must install again WinXP, thats no problem - the thing is, i want to keep my data on other partitions untouched. So, i have to boot to nVidia RAID options - to set a new Stripeset, but can i also mark the set as "healthy" and use it normaly (offcourse with fresh XP install on C:)?

  • Promise 378 SATA Raid question

Can someone tell me if my SATA drives are setup correctly given the details below?  The only driver that works is the FastTrak 378 (not the SATA 378 driver).  I want to make sure I am taking full advantage of my SATA drives.  In the Promise setup it shows them operating as "Mode U5".  What is this?
    Any help appreciated.
My Drive COnfiguration is as follows:
SATA Drives are on SATA3 & SATA4 (Promise 378 Controller)
    (as RAID 0 for performance)
Primary IDE Master - Sony DVD/RW
Primary IDE Slave - not used
Secondary IDE Master - ASUS DVD ROM
Secondary IDE Slave - ATA 133 Drive bay (Empty)
    3rd IDE Master&Slave - not used
    On Board Promise settings
    FastTrak 378 BIOS Ver 1.00.0.27
    2+0 Stripe - Functional
    HIT CTRL+F for setup and
(in the setup it shows RAID 0 Drive Array as Mode U5)
    Bios Settings
    Boot Device Priority
    1 - Floppy
    2 - ASUS DVD ROM
    3 - BBS-0(RAID):FT 378 Ary 1
On Board Promise IDE - As RAID
On Chip ATA's Operation Mode - Legacy Mode
    ATA Configuration - PATA only
    SATA Keep enabled - no
    * PATA Keep enabled - no
    PATA channel selection - both
    * Combined Mode Option - PATA First Channel
    * SATA Ports Definition - P0-3rd/P1-4th
    * Configure SATA as Raid - no
    (where * is greyed out)
Bios sees both DVD ROM & Sony DVD/RW
    Boot to CDROM
    Start Windows 2000 install
    F6
    "S"
    load Promise FastTrak 378 Controller
    Windows 2000 setup continues...

Everything looks good to me. Like Danny said though, you will need to change Bios to "Native Mode" for the Intel controller if you ever intend to use the Serial connectors. If not you're fine.
Also it's not clear from your post if you understand that you are using the 2 SATA drives as a Raid array. This gives you better drive performance but increases the chance of losing data. MAKE REGULAR BACKUPS.
The Promise SATA drivers are for using the Serial1&2, IDE3 connectors with single/separate drives where Raid arrays are not used.

  • 11.3 SAT OS question

In the 11.3 docs primary servers support MS 201 R2 but under managed devices
SAT only 2012 standard is listed. Is that an over site that R2 is not listed
for satellites? Will this change in FRU1?

I guess that since it's not in the docs that's only supported as a
    primary server.

  • Printing contacts trouble and backup confirmation question

    I have two questions:
    1) I am trying to print all of my Contacts.  I go to the page where I can see the long list of contacts, select “All,” click on the Actions dropdown menu and choose “Print,” and then I receive this message:  “Something happened while we were trying to print your request.  Please give it another try.”  I have been trying and retrying several times a day for more than a week.  What is wrong?
    2)  When I was using Backup Assistant, I received a “backup complete” message each morning. Now I am apparently using The Cloud, and I never see a “backup complete” message.  Is that the way it is supposed to operate?

        AliceinMD,
We'll help with both of these! As Ann154 stated, you can export the contacts to a CSV file and then open them in a spreadsheet to print.
The Cloud is a great improvement over the former Backup Assistant program. What device do you have? If you access the app, and then tap on the two arrows circling each other in the upper corner everything should back up for you. You will then get a notification when a backup needs to complete.

  • 800FSB Processor Question & SATA drives question.

    1. Which is better the Heatsink Fan that comes with a Pentium 4 3.0Ghz 800FSB processor, or a Vantec Aeroflow TMD Heatsink Fan?
    2. Is it better to stripe my two new 120 Gig SATA drives? Or is it better to just have them independent of each other? Why?

    1. I didn't realize that the processor came with a HSF, so I bought a Vantec Aeroflow. Now I'm just trying to figure out if there is much of a difference between them. I either keep the Vantec and use it because it benefits me more, or I return it and get my money back because it doesn't benefit me any. Any suggestions?
    2. It seems that striping (RAID 0) may be too risky in terms of possible data loss. I think I will just use each drive independently and reduce that risk.
