so can i use sata1 or sata2 safely without any problem if i don;'t intend to overclock my system at all??

  • Problems booting from onboard SATA with PCI SATA controller installed

I have a K7N2 Delta-ILSR motherboard (BIOS v 7.8), and my Windows XP installation is on a single drive attached to the onboard Promise 378 SATA RAID controller.  I have a PCI Promise TX2200 SATA RAID controller installed, currently in PCI slot 5.  The OS boots normally off the onboard controller if I do not have my RAID0 array attached to the PCI controller, but I get disk boot failure messages if I have the RAID0 attached to the Promise TX2200.
I have tried putting the PCI controller in different slots to change IRQ channel routing, tried changing boot order in the BIOS, and even tried assigning specific IRQ priorities to the slot with the Promise TX2200.
My basic question is this:  how do I get this motherboard to boot from the onboard controller while I have my RAID0 attached to the add-on PCI controller?

Well, Promise got back to me.  They were insightful enough to tell me what I already knew and that they didn't support what I was trying to do:

Case Problem:   I have an MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR Socket A motherboard with an onboard Promise FastTrack 376 SATA RAID controller. I wish to continue booting my OS from a single SATA drive on this controller, while using a RAID0 array on my FastTrack TX2200 controller. When the TX2200 is installed and the array is attached, it is detected as C: by the motherboard BIOS and the active boot drive as D:. The TX2200 is detected during boot (after POST) first, the onboard contoller second. I have tested the TX2200 in...
Case Solution:   Hi Sorry for the late reply. Are you by any chance running both the FT 376 embedded controller along with the FT TX2200 if so than you will run into bios or driver conflict when both controllers in the system. Promise only recommend and support one cards pre system. Thank you.

Thank you for contacting MSI Technical Support.
As onboard SATA controller and PCI controller are both promise. It exits compatibility between them. You could try the following procedures to check if they could solve the issue:
    1. Please contact the PCI card vendor to ask if there is relative firmware update
    2. Please disable all the onboard devices which you don't want to use in bios setup.
    3. You could try different MB bios version to have a check. You could download these versions from here.
Please feel free to let us know if you still have any further issues or inquiries
So that leaves me 3... downgrading my BIOS is not worth the risk just to make this work.  Looks like its time for a full migration plan so this issue becomes moot.

  • Sata Drive and the KT6V Motherboard

Hi all, Wondering if anyone could help me. I just got a new PC and am setting it up as a server. Now I have a 40G hhd running the O.S. which is windows 98se ( I know its old and has problems but it should work fine) I also have a 120g WD SATA drive that i want to use as a storage drive. ( I have a set up on my other pc this way) but windows does not see the Sata drive and when i try the raid setup I see the Drive but i cant do anything with it. My mother board is a KT6V and all drivers and programs are loaded. I can use the Raid Tool and see the drive it says its working but again I cant do anything with it. Just wondering if this is the way this MotherBoard runs or if there is a setting im missing. Thanks for your time.

    Hello,
    Win98se,
How did you format the 120GB sata drive?
With the KT6 boards, if you have only one sata drive and enter the Sata ROM, you cannot choose any options, That is normal.
Must be using FAT32 for win98se.

  • Will not startup from SATA controller.

I've added an SATA controller and drives to my blue G3 and hoped to start up from one of the internal SATA drives. It doesn't seem to be working. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Bootable controller cards are firmware-based. Did you install a Mac-compatible SATA controller card? More often than not, the System recognizes drives connected to a controller card (ATA or SATA) as SCSI devices. After the card and drive(s) were installed, did you attempt booting from your installer or Restore CD, and either run Disk Utility (OS X) or Drive Setup (pre-OS X) to format the drive(s), so that a SCSI driver was written to the disk(s)?

  • TS100 onboard Sata controller max. harddisk size supported

    Dear all,
May anyone tried to use 1.0TB and 1.5TB harddisk connect to onboard Sata controller and recongized by it?
If not, is PCIe Sata controller can used to replace the onboard controller in order to increase the total storage for TS100 from 750GB x 4 (official) to 6TB or 8TB?
    Many thanks.
    Best Regards,

The first thing to do is use smartctl to test the drive. Start with the short test ( smartctl -t short /dev/sdX ), and if it passes run the long test ( ... -t long ... ).

  • Onboard promise raid-controller and promise add-on sata-controller

Can anybody help me with the following problem.
I have 4 SATA hard disks.
2 Western Digital Raptors and 2 Seagate Barracuda V of 80 gig.
I would like to do the following:
I would like to put the 2 raptors in raid-striping for my OS on my onboard raid-controller and use the 2 barracuda's for data and connect them the promise add-on card (promise ultra150 tx2).
I have the following with this config: the raid-controller is no problem but when i connect a hard-drive to the add-on card, windows won't boot anymore and i have no possibility in the bios to choose to boot from the raid-controller.
I'm using an MSI K7N2G-ILSR motherboard with the latest MSI-bios.

I'm having the same problem but I can't switch my drives. I have my 2 200 gig maxtors full of data that i can't let go of. I've installed a new silicon images pci card with 2 sata channels. if i hook up the drives both bios recognize the drives correctly but it tell me invalid system disk. pretty sure that it's reading the pci card, not seeing a os installed and not even looking at my onboard controller. I was told that i can change irq priority, but i can't get it right or it doesn't work. I can install os on pci card but would really rather not. I'm very happy with the setup i have for once.

My computer is overclocked at the time but i have tried to use the harddrive when it's not clocked also. Also when im goin in to teh controlpanel and starts the setings for Sillicon Images sata controll and have music on my computer, the music laggs for a very very short moment. Something must be wrong and i can not find it."
It's still the same problem in my computer. The older computer had a MSI moderboard with a VIA chip and i have a nForce 3. InnoVison said i should talk to you about this problem. I have 3 harddrives but i use this controllercard because i want to have my computer overclocked and then i can't use 2 of the sata ports as i think you know.
I would be very thankful if you could help me with this problem.

I've used a noname SATA pci card (non raid) with SIL3112 on my neo2 without problems with 1C bios.
Think you may try with a disk lower than 48bitLBA need (137GB barrier), eg a 120GB disk

I am using Intel 865 based MB with 2 original SATA channels. The original SATA channels are bootable.
I could not used the EIO card with 160G HDD. The whole setup is working only after I connected oine of my 120G Segate SATA HDD to the EIO Sata card.
I think this card do not properly support HDD above 120G.

Btw: you have xp sp2 ?
48bitLBA is not enabled in the first version.

    Edit:
Here's another with complete different setup and same problems
    http://forum.tweakxp.com/forum/Topic212148-4-1.aspx
I doubt it has anything to do with your motherboard and/or bios.
Btw: I looked at innovision and their drivers in download area are very old.
Get the latest SIL3112 drivers for XP here:
    http://www.siliconimage.com/support/supportsearchresults.aspx?pid=63&cid=3&ctid=2&osid=4&
And remember 3112 is sata150 only , so it's not sure it will work with your drive at all .
Anyway it should be set to fixed sata1.5G with jumper - not certain the controller can autonegotiate
without trouble. You cannot have command queing enabled either , disk support only NCQ and controller TCQ
so having command queing set ON will cause major conflicts in data transfers.

  • M93P and use of 2 HDD Controller | add additional SATA Controller

    Hello,
Has anyone added a second HDD SATA controller to their ThnikCentre M93/p , my is a mini tower, to add SATA HDD ports to their setup. I have try to add a Marvell 88SE9230 based RAID HDD Controller as a second controller, but was not recognized.
    Thanks for your help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I just added a 2-port PCIe SATA controller, Syba SI-PEX40061, to my M93p.  Windows 7 recognized it and automatically installed drivers, and I subsequently installed updated drivers.  It's based on Marvell 88SE9120 Chipset.  When a HDD is attached, prior to boot, Win 7 hangs.  If a HDD is connected after Win 7 has booted, it causes BSOD. Lenovo BIOS is setup for AHCI by default and I set it to allow legacy BIOS support, and the controller has AHCI by default.  Still can't get controller to work.  HAS ANYONE HAD LUCK WITH AN ADD-ON SATA CONTROLLER?

  • Sonnet tempo sata e4p and raid 5

    Hi
I just bought a tempo fusion 500p and a tempo sata e4p and i thought i was going to be able to configure them as raid 5.... Inside the fusion i have 5 500gb disks and i was hoping that there would be software with the e4p card since it said it was raid 5 compatible. how can i get it to work as raid 5? do i have to buy software or another hardware card? i've spent too much time looking around the forum here and it got me even more confused since most replies here mention that if you get a hardware controller it should be possible....
what are my options? help would be greatly appreciated...
a confused and a little dissapointed editor....

Yes, you are correct. There will be software that will allow you to set up the hardware on the card since the card actually controls the RAID system.
I would suggest reading up on RAID theory before you take the plunge. RAID 5 will give you redundancy but no performance increase, RAID 0 will give you Performance but no redundancy, then you have RAID 0+1, 3, 50, 6, 60, and so on. Make sure you know what you want before you get to deep into this.
Look at the bottome of my post and you can see what I'm using. I have that box set up with a RAID 0 on two drives for performance while editing and then I have one drive that is for backups.
    Just another thought.

  • Had to replace Xserve RAID controller and now I get Xsan Admin: ERROR: duplicate LUN label RAID1-Left1

I need some help, I had one of my five Xserve RAID boxes fail. The upper controller card needed to be replaced and so we replaced it. But now only one of my volumes is loading and I am seeing the following error in my Console.
7/18/12 9:23:18.550 AM Xsan Admin: ERROR: duplicate LUN label RAID1-Left1
This raid box holds three LUNs. the left is split into two with one being the metadata / Journal for the main volume and the 2nd being the same for my secondary volume. The right side of this box is the second volume while the remaining 4 RAID boxes are my main volume. Here is the rub, the main volume is using the left1 LUN and the secondary is left2. The left2 is the one that is not working and when I go into the LUN info the WWN number does not match the actual id on the raid box.
    HELP!!!!
    Thanks,
    Kevin Rosenthal

Did you try turning it off and on again? I mean, the full SAN shutdown/startup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4027
You're probably seeing "duplicate LUN labels" because the MDC has seen two LUNs with the same label but different serial numbers since it has been online. The serial number (which I think is based off the WWN) would have changed when the RAID controller changed. A reboot should fix that specific error message.
If the volume still doesn't start after rebooting, then you would want to check the cvlog for that volume.

Probably not, since user-caused damage isn't covered by the warranty. But you can take the iPhone to an Apple Store and see if there's anything they can do for you. A phone company store will not service your iPhone at all, to the best of my knowledge.

Not sure if I'm following you. I have 4 hard drives installed on my Mac Pro. I had a RAID 5 configured and functional for about 5 months. My battery died on the RAID card. I replaced the battery, seated the RAID card back in the slot I removed it from. When I booted to the USB drive to look in the RAID utility, I could see the battery is charged but my volumes are not showing.
The drives don't show in disk Utility. I built the RAID with the RAID Utility and they did show there. I have a early 2008 Mac Pro, Mavricks OS running Mac Server
