SATA Docking Stations such as New Technology Voyager Q: Drive Wear?

I am updating a couple G4s to SATA and want to add a external SATA dock. As a starting point I am looking at the Voyager Q:
http://www.newertech.com/products/voyagerq.php
The manual says how to connect the unit and how to mount the drive icon on the desktop (i.e., make sure its off, insert drive, and turn on), but it does not say what to do to un-mount the drive.
Do you simply drag the drive icon from the desktop into the trash and it then it safely spins the drive to a stop (after which you manual eject it with the button on the unit)? Or is this, and similar units, sudddenly cutting power to the drive - the equivalent of losing power on your Mac?
I am intending to archive material to SATA drives which will be duplicated and replaced every so often so I am concerned about premature wear from these docks that would cause data loss.

"I have 3 of those they're great, like japamac says, just eject or drag them to the trash before powering down or swapping HDs. "
Have you had any issues with FireWire 800 "pass through". There are several feedbacks on Amazon saying these units will allow you to use either FireWire port by themselves, but when you attempt to connect another FireWire device into this unit the device will not be recognized / work. Not sure if this problem is related to hardware and/or firmware (OWC mentions a future firmware download to allow 3TB drives to be used in it).
The first feedback; for example, states:
{quote}However am disappointed that attaching other FW800 devices doesn't seem to work using the second FW800 port when connected to a Mac.{quote}
I am adding 800 ports to my Macs via a pci card, but I guess I could always use the native 400 ports.

  • Dock station compatible with new nano with multi-touch

Does anybody knows if JBL OnStage IIIP Speakers are compatible with the new iPod nano with multi-touch?
    Thanks.

I don't think you understand the problem then. When pressing 'menu/back' on the remote it goes back to the Album list, but there's nothing 'highlighted' and hence no way to switch between different Albums.
I'm guessing it's because it doesn't make sense to have navigation highlighting on a touch only device.
It does, however, work on the iPhone 3gs (and all other ipods I've tried), which is why I'm hoping for an update from apple that would fix this. I don't see why they'd purposely make previous ipod docks incompatible with the new nano... then again, it's Apple.
There's a bunch of software issues with the new nano, so I guess they'll have their hands full with more important problems for the time being.
I don't see how JBL could fix this.

  • Looking for competent docking station for iPhone 3GS

I'm having a terrible time finding a good docking station for my new iPhone 3GS. Before I bought it I used a 5th generation iPod 60GB. I have a belkin usb hub/dock for it that works great. When my computer is off it charges the iPod, and it's a powered usb hub as well. Occasionally I would plug in an AV cable to watch content I purchased from iTunes on my TV.
I'm now trying to find a dock with equivalent or better abilities for the iPhone 3GS, and I'm coming up empty. Here's what I need in order of importance:
    1. *Plug into AC and charge iPhone when Mac is off, while still being connected via USB so that it will sync automatically when Mac is on.*
    2. Pass through dock connector to another dock connector on back so that I can connect Apple composite cables to TV, via the dock.
    3. Powered USB hub with 2 or more usb ports.
    4. A media card reader would be a really nice plus and make it perfect.
The closest I've found is the Griffin Simplifi, however the FAQ for it on their website states this:
"Will the Simplifi charge my iPod or iPhone while my computer's powered off or asleep?
Even though the Simplifi has its own power supply, your iPod or iPhone requires an active USB connection to charge. This means that the Simplifi will not charge your device if your computer is powered off or asleep."
I'm pretty sure their explanation is technically inaccurate, and simply a way of trying to shift the blame for their stupidity on to Apple. Nevertheless it makes this dock utterly useless (see item 1 above).
Is there any way to accomplish what I need, or is it hopeless?

Costco was, and may still be selling, the iHome Model iD95....  I think this model is only carried by Costco.  Other retailers such as Amazon.com sell the iHome iD83 App-Enhanced 30-pin iPod/iPhone/iPad Alarm Clock Speaker Dock.  See the description of this model at Amazon.com.    Both my model and the one on Amazon.com are described as a HOME SYSTEM for your iPad.    It has a dock on the top of the AM-FM Radio which will accommodate either an iPad, iPod or iPhone (up to model 4s).  If you have an iPhone5 or newest iPad, you can get a "30 pin to lightning" adapter to accommodate.   I just got an iPhone 5, and ordered the "30 pin to Lightning" adapter, so that I can once again use my iPhone on the dock.   It has 2 alarms, and numerous other features, including a battery backup, digital display, it charges your iPad/iPod/iPhone, and it has pretty darn good stereo speakers.  It's easy to adjust the base and treble.  Price when I bought it in September, was $79.95 and there was a $20 coupon.   It is easy to program music or Pandora from an iPhone/iPod/iPad, and can even program for music or Pandora before going to sleep and shuts itself off at a specified time, and then can turn on the radio or an alarm, or music or Pandora at a specified time in the morning.   I'm happy with it.

  • Need hard drive for docking station

I have the advanced docking station, and need to know which hard drives are compatible with the ultrabay.  Also, do I need an adapter for the ultrabay?

ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter (40Y8725)
this is the sata version you need. Make sure you get the exact part number.
The Advanced Dock use a PATA interface, while the newer thinkpads i.e. T400/500.. R400/R500 etc use a SATA interface drive.

  • Lenovo X1 Docking Station?

Hello, I have a T61P and have to decide by tomorrow if I want to order a X1 or pick a different model.  I was wondering if I can use my existing T61P docking station with the new X1.
    Would anybody know?

My information is that the X1 is going to be officially announced / launched on the 19th of this month, (at least hear in Germany), so I guess you're a little early.
That said; as the current docks are all "series 3" I would bet that the X1, (if at all dockable), is compatible with those rather than older versions. Sorry, but I have to say the X1 will not be compatible with your current dock.
Hope you can follow my logic.

  • Xb4 Notebook Media Docking Station Compatibility?

I am in the market for a new laptop. I bought and have loved using the HP xb4 Notebook Media Docking Station. I would like to buy a new HP laptop that will allow me to continue using the docking station.
What new HP laptops are compatible with the HP xb4 Notebook Media Docking Station?

    Hi,
The good news is, it compatible with all laptops which have USB 2.0 ports (you can use USB 3.0 port but won't get USB 3.0 speed):

  • No More Docking Stations?

I'm definitely behind the times, but I'm just starting to research options to upgrade my Thinkpad T400 and surprised to see that current Thinkpad's look like they've done away with docking ports.
I'm kind of curious about why they decided to do that, and more curious about what the alternative solutions are?
If someone could provides some tips or point me to some reference source, it'd be appreciated.
    Thx,  Jon

    Welcome to the forum!
The trend is away from conventional docking stations toward generic port replicating units that connect with USB. The latter aren't as functional but they're cheaper and they do away with those huge multi-pin connectors that dominated the bottoms of older ThinkPads. They also do away with the need to change connectors and thus docking stations with every new generation of ThinkPads.
USB port replicators have their disadvantages so another more recent trend is towards the OneLink connector as used in the latest ThinkPads like the X1 Carbon and other newer systems. See Review Lenovo OneLink Dock for more info. There's also a OneLink Pro dock available.

  • Keeping external docking stations connected all the time?

I would like to connect a couple hard drive docking stations to a new iMac so I can easily swap out different bare hard drives. Are there any issues or reasons to not keep two docking stations connected via FW or TB connected all the time?
    Thanks.

Should be no problem, just remember to Eject the Disks in the Finder before removing from the Dock.

  • Sata HDD Docking Station not reconising on Imac do  i need to download some sort of driver?

H new to all this . Purchased a SATA HDD docking station which stated on box it was compatible with a MAC but plugged it in and can't find it anywhere . Got a small disk with it with softwear but to small for drive. Has anyone had simular problem.

you likely have to download the drivers manually from their website slotin drives such as imacs have don't support tiny optical discs

    ipod problems
My ipod sounds as if it has interference when on docking station....3 other apple devices work with no such problems, i.e a nano. a classic and 2 separate iphones    so the problem doesn't seem to be the docking station...I have been given 2 reolacement ipods and the sound persists....it is obviously the connection.....as before downloading any data on the new ipod I docked it and the noise was present ....mairiskye....

    - Is it a 4G iPod? That model sometimes mates poorly with dock because the configuration of the iPod by the dock connector is different that other devices. Thus, make sure it is fulld/seated in the dock.
    - Have you brought the iPod and dock to the Genius at the an Apple store.

  • Voyager Q SATA dock isn't allowing booting up via firewire

For my MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, I have just purchased the Newertech Voyager Q SATA dock with firewire 400, 800, esata and USB 3.0
The only problem is, while it's advertised that you can boot from external drives using this, on my MacBook Pro, I am completely unable to boot via firewire 400 or 800.
This is definitely one of the newest models, as it doesn't look like the quad interface models friends of mine have had for years.
I am going to contact Newertech, but I thought I'd at least reach out to the Apple community here as well.
I've tried two different SATA drives just in case there was something about the first SATA drive I was using that was preventing booting up via firewire, but no luck.
The really interesting thing is I CAN boot up via USB, but since my MacBook Pro only has USB 2.0, it's definitely a lot slower than firewire 800 and not nearly as desirable.
I can access any drives while the computer is booted up from my internal drive's OS. They mount on the desktop via firewire just fine.
But when I boot up and hold the option key so I can choose what drive to boot up from, the external drive in the SATA dock doesn't show up AT ALL via firewire.
It only shows up when I stay on that screen (where you choose the boot drive after holidng option while powering up) and plug in the USB cable instead of firewire.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Yea, I was upset because this fact is NOT advertised on their website. I'm glad I can at least boot via USB, which will be fast on new machines with true USB 3.0 but slow on older machines with just 2.0.
But now I need to find the old model, which seems difficult. I really want to boot via FW 800. That's a huge reason why I bought this.
